crutch or a spring-board. For a teacher the curriculum stops being stifling if she understands what it is
meant to achieve. But most use it, often badly, as a crutch because they make no effort to engage
with it or understand what it hopes to achieve. Once a teacher understands that, she can use it or
work around it to achieve the same ends, says Dr. Gurveen Kaur.

Essentially, a syllabus is a descriptive outline and summary of topics that are to be covered in an
education or training course. The syllabus will usually provide specific information about the said training
course and is often drafted by the governing body or by the instructor of the course. Syllabi, on the other
hand, are the plural form of a syllabus.
An outline or other brief statement of the main points of a discourse, the subjects of a course of
lectures, the contents of a curriculum, etc.
A short summary of the legal basis of a court's decision appearing at the beginning of a reported
case.
A book containing summaries of the leading cases in a legal field, used especially by students.
A typical syllabus will contain information on how, where and when to contact the lecturer and teaching
assistants; an outline of what will be covered in the course; a schedule of test dates and the due dates for
assignments; the grading policy for the course; specific classroom rules; etc.
The purpose of a syllabus is to ensure consistency between courses thought at different colleges under
the same governing body. A syllabus issued by the governing body, i.e. the board of education, the head
of department, etc, may be modified by the instructor as long as it is consistent with the curriculum.
The syllabus also serves as a means for the students to be aware and understanding what they will be
thought in the duration of the course. Wikipedia lists the various purposes served by a syllabus:
fair and impartial understanding between the instructor and students such that there is minimal
confusion on policies relating to the course
setting clear expectations of effort on student's behalf to be put into the course
providing a marketing angle of the course such that students may choose early in the course
whether the subject material is attractive
clarifying student understanding of specified material such as grading policy, grading rubric, late
work policy, locations and times
providing contact information for instructor and teaching assistant such as phone or email
listing materials required and/or recommended such as textbooks, assigned reading books,
calculators, lab vouchers, or other equipments
listing outside resources for subject material assistance, including extracurricular books, tutor
locations, resource centers, etc.

A curriculum is the set of courses, and their content, offered at a school or university. The term,
curriculum is derived from the Latin word "Currere" which means to run/to proceed. Currere refers to the
course of deeds and experiences through which children grow to become mature adults.
The aggregate of courses of study given in a school, college, university, etc.: The school is adding
more science courses to its curriculum.
A general curriculum, in the broadest sense of the word, may list all courses offered at a specific school. A
curriculum is prescriptive, which means that is issued by the governing body and lists topics the must be
understood by the student at the end of the course, and what level to achieve a particular grade or
standard. It may also refer to a defined and prescribed course of studies students must fulfill in order to
complete the course. An individual teacher may refer to the curriculum to ensure that her lessons are
covering all the topics as required by the curriculum.
lists course of studies which students must fulfill in order to pass a certain level of education
may discuss how the sum of lessons and teachings will help students learn the basics
The main difference between a syllabus and a curriculum is that a curriculum is a more generalized or an
overview of the subjects or topics that the students are meant to learn. However, a syllabus is a more
detailed overview of the subject of study. For example: a math curriculum may list basics of algebra,
basics of geometry and basics of trigonometry. While, the class syllabus will list what topics will be
covered under each of the basic topics, what will be the concepts that students may understand by the
end of each topic, and it may even list what exercises or problems in the textbook will be covered during
class. Hence, it can be said that syllabus is a subset of curriculum.
Syllabus vs Curriculum
Education is an act of imparting and acquiring information. In more technical terms, it
is the process where society passes its accumulated knowledge, values, and skills on
to one generation. This process develops the reasoning, intellect, and judgment of an
individual. The word education comes from the Latin word educare, meaning to
bring up. That word is also related to the word educere, meaning out and
ducere, which means lead. In education, a teacher is the one who directs the
education of the students, providing the schooling for them. The process of education
starts from the curriculum.
A curriculum is a set of courses that presents their content; they are offered by schools
and universities. It comes from a Latin word for race course. The meaning of
this race course is not a one-track race but a record of actions and experiences that
guide an individual for intellectual, functional, and ethical growth. A curriculum
prescribes the objectives of the system and acts as a documented guide for teachers to
understand the standards of a student and view the requirements to achieve the end of
their developmental stage. The historical conception of curriculum came from John
Franklin Bobbitt. Bobbitt is also a university professor and a writer. He wrote a book
called The Curriculum explaining that the curriculum as an idea for a course of
deeds and experiences which will guide children into becoming adults and establish a
place in adult society. He also said that accumulating these deeds and experiences are
not only limited to school. They can also be obtained outside of it. These also include
those experiences that are obtained through unplanned and undirected actions. Bobbitt
also defined curriculum as an ideal. While there are some views that reject Bobbitts
postulates, they still retain the basic idea of curriculum and that experiences act as a
course for shaping a human being into a person.
In formal schooling, a curriculum shows the range of the courses available. From
there, the students will choose subject matters to be studied, and they will also act as a
learning program. Features of a curriculum also include the course objectives and
their

and assessment strategies. These factorsare grouped and labeled as units. The
curriculum design also allows the student to see the prerequisites of each course that
can be satisfied by fulfilling certain conditions, like taking particular courses, gaining
work experience, and examinations. Core curriculum also exists. It is treated as the
center of the course of study and is defined as mandatory for the students.
Curriculum is often fused with a syllabus. A syllabus is an outline of the topics
covered by the course and displays the summary of these topics. Unlike a curriculum,
a syllabus is descriptive. They are defined by an exam board or laid out by a professor
that is in charge of the quality of the course. They serve as ensuring an understanding
between professors and students so there will be less confusion regarding the policies
of the course. A syllabus also sets the expectations of the material that must be
learned, the behavior to be displayed while inside the class, and the effort put into the
course.
Summary:
1.Education is an act of sharing and gathering information. Society passes its
accumulated knowledge, values, and skills on to one generation to have it develop.
2.The first step in the process of education starts from the curriculum. A curriculum is
a set of courses which also defines their content. It is considered as prescriptive and is

3.A syllabus serves as an outline and summary of topics that are to be covered in a

Curriculum is a focus of study, consisting of various courses all
designed to reach a particular proficiency or qualification. For
instance some high schools offer a college-prep curriculum, which is
designed to prepare a student for the rigors of college study.
Emphasis will be on the humanities (history, English, etc.) and
sciences (biology, math, chemistry, physics, etc.). On the other
hand, some high schools offer a vocational-prep curriculum, which
includes specific skill-building courses (cosmetology, construction
trades, electronics, computer science, etc.).
A syllabus is simply an outline and time line of a particular course. It
will typically give a brief overview of the course objectives, course
expectations, list reading assignments, homework deadlines, and
exam dates. It is typically available on the first day of a college
course, and a student is expected to know what is in the syllabus
throughout the course. The purpose of the syllabus is to allow the
student to work their schedule for their own maximum efficiency
and effectiveness. It helps to avoid conflicts with other courses, and
it prevents someone from accusing a professor of unfairly adding
assignments mid-term.

Curriculum is the outline of what you will learn in the course. The syllabus are the
textbooks that the teacher will use during the course of study.

Syllabus is what I give my students on the first day of class - it includes assignment
and exam dates and topics that will be covered during the semester. Curriculum are
all of the courses that we have in the program. For a certain major you have to follow
a certain curriculum.
