Tabernacle Education
Foundation is back
and better than ever
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The Tabernacle Education
Foundation is officially back and
better than ever.
We needed to revive the foundation for Tabernacle Township,
President of the Foundation Judy
Sailer said. Other districts have
foundations and they are able to
support the students and teachers
through financial contributions
that the school cannot receive or
provide at times. As a non-profit,
we can bring in funders who care
about education and the development of children to our community.
Years ago, Tabernacle had a
functioning education foundation
that was running smoothly and
pursuing an outdoor classroom
as its big project.
However, after the sudden and
tragic passing of president Chad
Adams, the project never came to
fruition and the foundation had
no glue to keep it together, so it
slowly fizzled out.
Sailer thought it was crucial to
revive this group to help staff enplease see FOUNDATION, page 9

Multiple trees broke in half in the front yard of this property on Carranza Road during the June 23 storm. The thunderstorms left a
wide path of destruction across much of South Jersey, leaving many without power.

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2015

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture
Douglas H. Fisher and New Jersey Equestrian of the Year Kirsten Jeansson of Tabernacle celebrated June as the month of
the horse in New Jersey with a visit to Hidden Acres 4-D Farm in Burlington County,
a thoroughbred breeding facility on June 3.
New Jersey is home to thousands of
pleasure horses, show horses and racehorses. In 1977, to honor the important
place horses play in New Jerseys economy
and quality of life, the horse was named
the official state animal. To honor the
states equine industry, Gov. Christie has
proclaimed June the Month of the Horse in
New Jersey.
New Jerseys beloved equine industry
is quite diverse, from thoroughbred and
standard bred racing to horse shows and

Stepping up to the storm

Tabernacle 12-year-old Jackson Milone
keeps his cool after last weeks storm hit
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
When the unforgettable storm
rolled into town on June 23, most
people were completely blindsided by the weather and took
precautionary measures until
they were cleared.
However, for Tabernacle 12year-old Jackson Milone, it was
like he had been waiting for this
storm for his entire life.
He just took the bull by the
horns, his mother Megan
Yarson said. As his mother, I was
amazed at how he handled himself, especially at such a young
age.
On the way to get dinner with
Jacksons adored grandmother,
Yarson pulled over to fill her gas
tank when she was cautioned by a
gas attendant.
He told me that there was a
tornado about six minutes away. I
didnt even know it was supposed
to storm, Yarson said. But then
again how often are those warnings actually correct, and how
often is a tornado seen around
this area?
Disregarding the warning by
the gas attendant, Yarson continued driving to dinner.
Luckily, Jacksons grandmother cancelled because she is unable
to walk in the rain at the age of
96. This allowed them some time

to turn around
and head back
home.
Unfortunately,
the
family
was
blindsided by
the
storm
driving down
Skeet Road.
We were
MILONE
on a back road
with
trees
everywhere when the storm came
out of nowhere, Yarson said.
Jackson stayed very calm
throughout. In fact, he took his
phone out and began taking some
pictures of the storm.
When a small tree came crashing down on Yarsons van, she decided it was time to pull over.
Luckily, the tree didnt cause any
serious damage.
They decided to stay in Starbucks until the storm died down.
When we were able to leave, I
was going to pick up some food
because I knew how hungry Jackson must have been, Yarson said.
However, he assured me that we
needed to go home and make sure
the house was OK because that is
more important.
When they arrived at the
house, they noticed a tree had
been blown over and crushed the

Being a Boy Scout, Jacksons

texting his friends and grandmother to check on them.
He even fixed the broken refrigerator filter by plugging up the
hole that was leaking with a carrot.
He didnt necessarily save any

deserves to be recognized,
Yarson said.

Foundation planning events

FOUNDATION
Continued from page 1
hance and enrich the school curriculum with programs/projects
that would not otherwise be funded by the school district, state or
federal education budgets.
Its a support for the school
that the district itself cannot provide, Sailer said. There are millions of dollars out there that are
corporate tied, and you need a
non-profit to be able to
fundraise.
In an attempt to bring the foundation back to life, Sailer met
with the school district Superintendent George Rafferty and elementary school principal Gerald
Patterson last year and introduced a list of things that needed
to be addressed to help the school
district.
We needed to do something,
Sailer said. Taxes arent getting
any lower and our enrolment is
declining. We needed something
to help support the districts
literacy needs and STEM programs.
A main goal of the foundation
is to support initiatives that are
not currently funded by the district and provide funds to support
them. Sailer said Tabernacles literacy scores were not the best,
and one of these initiatives she

wanted to focus specifically on

was the READs program.
The READs program is a sixweek integrative literacy program that combines reading, enrichment, the arts, development
and STEM-2.
Summer reading is critical,
Sailer said. Forty percent to 60
percent of learning is lost over
summer months.
The education foundation bestowed its first grant with its
sponsorship of the elementary
schools READS programs yearend pep-rally, which celebrates
the success of last summers participants and kicks off this summers program.
Sailer had the opportunity to
attend the actual READs program
event and was floored at what she
saw.
Seeing the kids beside themselves excited and actually wanting to be engaged about reading
with summer around the corner,
you would have thought they
were playing video games! Sailer
said.
The first fundraising event for
the foundation was held on June
6.
Earlier in the year, the PTA
held the Harlem Wizards event to
raise money for the schools, so
the new education foundation
took the reins on the spring event.
We did a Camden Riversharks
game at Campbells Field and it

went well, about 100 people came

out, Sailer said. The kids had a
great time, they were all dressed
in their school shirts and we took
lots of silly pictures.
Another fun event to watch for
is the first annual Tabernacle
Community Day and 5K/Fun
Run, which will be held on Oct. 4.
This event is being planned in
conjunction with Tabernacles
Cub Scout Pack 439, and will coincide with the Scouts Annual
Touch-a-Truck event.
We want to have a day to bring
all of the community members
together like other towns do,
Sailer said.
Sailer is an absolute advocate
for education, having taught at
Rowan College and been involved
in youth development work for 25
years. She also has a child of her
own in the Tabernacle School District.
As parents, we need to have a
vested interest that includes not
just going to board of education
meetings. Our kids are our legacy,
and we need to make sure theyre
getting everything they need in
terms of their education, Sailer
said.
Members of the Education
Foundation are parents and
grandparents of students, local
business owners and taxpayers
who want to see the educational
opportunities for youth in the
area expanded.

We are now scheduling SPRING CLEANUPS!

was named New Jersey Equestrian of the Year by the New Jersey
Equine Advisory Board in January. Her duties include attending
functions hosted by the New Jersey Equine Advisory Board and
represent the Board at functions.
New Jersey has a large and diverse equestrian community, so
celebrating the month of the
horse is a great opportunity to
teach and learn about the many
facets of the equine industry in
New Jersey, said Jeansson. As
the Equestrian of the Year, I hope
to bring more awareness to the
equestrian community as a
whole. I hope that I can teach the

public about the equine industry

and its impact on not only the
agricultural industry in New Jersey, but on New Jersey as a
whole.
At Hidden Acres 4-D Farm in
Chesterfield and North Hanover,
Fisher and Jeansson were given a
tour and met the current mare,
foal and yearlings in residence.
The Wilkinson family has been
involved in thoroughbred horse
breeding since 1979. The 222-acre
preserved farm is now operated
by Todd and Jennifer Wilkinson.
They also have pleasure horses
and a hay operation for feed.
We love breeding horses and
racing, said Todd Wilkinson.
We are proud of our states thoroughbred farms and the equine
industry, which help the entire
agricultural community and help
keep open space.
