Three Kinds of Assets

Human- the most important asset because people control the physical and
financial assets.

Habit 1 Be Proactive
Proactive- as human beings we are responsible for our
own lives.
Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our
conditions.
Taking initiative.

Circle of Concern- things that affect us.


Circle of Influence-Things that we have control over.
Proactive focus widens our circle of influence.
Reactive focus reduces our circle of influence.

Proactive means more than taking initiative.
o We are responsible for our own lives.
o Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.
o Behavior based on values and not feelings.
o Reactive people are driven by feelings.

Between stimulus and response, man has the freedom to


choose.
Elanor Roosevelt- No one can hurt you without your
consent.
It is not what happens to us but our response to what
happened.

Direct, Indirect, and No Control


Direct control- problems involving our own behavior.
o Solved by working on our habits.

Indirect control- problems involving other peoples


behavior.
o Solved by changing our methods of influence, Habits 4,5,6.

No control- problems we can do nothing about.


o Accept problems and learn to live with them.

Management and Leadership

What is the difference between management and leadership?

Management is a bottom line focus- How can I accomplish certain things?

Leadership is a top line focus- What are the things I want to accomplish?
Vision

Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.

Every industry and profession demands leadership first and management


second.

Effective management without effective leadership is like straightening deck


chairs on the Titanic.

Functions of Management

Planning- establishing organizational goals and developing strategies to


achieve goals.

Organizing- developing the structure of the organization and acquiring human


resources.

Leading- motivating employees and forming teams.

Controlling- evaluating performance and controlling the organizations


resources

Levels of Management

Top- senior executives who establish the goals for the organization and
interacting with suppliers, bankers, politicians, and customers.

Middle- managers who allocate resources so the goals of the senior


executives are met by implementing plans and supervising lower-level
managers. (Sales, research, plant, marketing)

First line- supervisors responsible for the day-to-day operations.

Planning

Strategic- done by top management to set long range goals, 5-10 years.

Tactical- middle level managers who review operational activities, monthly,


quarterly, or yearly goals.

Operational- first-line supervisors who direct the day-to-day activities needed


to meet tactical goals.

Put First Things First- Habit 3

Effective management is putting first things first.

Leadership decides what the first things are, it is management that puts them
first, day-by-day.

Management is discipline, carrying the vision out.

Organize and execute around priorities.

The successful person/manager has the habit of doing the things failures
dont like to do.

Who do you work for?

Time management- a misnomer, the challenge is not to manage time but


ourselves.

We spend time in one of four ways.
o Urgent- requires immediate attention
o Not urgent
o Important- has to do with results, it contributes to your mission, values, and high
priority goals.

Not practicing Habit 2 we only respond to the urgent.

Moving into Quadrant 2


Effective people are not problem-minded, they are
opportunity minded. They think preventively.
The key is not to prioritize what is on your schedule but
to schedule your priorities. Do this in the context of a
week.
Quadrant 2 involves 4 key activities:

o Identifying roles- write down your key roles


o Selecting goals- set 2 or 3 important results for the coming week.
o Scheduling- look at the week ahead and schedule time to achieve your goals.
o Daily adapting- prioritizing and responding to unanticipated events.

Clear, up-front mutual understanding and commitment regarding expectation

Consequences- evaluation criteria

Win/Win- mutually beneficial, takes high courage and
high consideration of others, quite rare.
Win/Lose- authoritarian approach, very common.
Lose/Win- people who are quick to appease or please,
popularity.
Lose/Lose- results when two win/lose people get
together, vindictive.
Win- when there is no sense of competition, securing
your own ends, most common.
Win/Win or No Deal- no agreement if both parties do
not win.

Physical- Exercise, nutrition, stress management. (Assume you had a heart


attack)

Mental- Reading, visualizing, planning, writing. (Assume your knowledge has


a 1/2-life of 2-1/2 years)

Spiritual- value clarification and commitment, study and meditation. (Have a


bigger reason to do something)

Social/Emotional- Service, empathy, synergy, intrinsic security. (Assume


everything you say can be overheard and everything you do can be seen)

HABIT 8TH

The eighth habit is to "Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs". Some versions of the
book come with a DVD, although all the short films on this DVD can be viewed via Covey's
website. The book is divided into two sections, with the first few chapters focusing on finding
your voice, while the later chapters are about inspiring others to find their voice. Most of the
chapters in the book include a section discussing one of the 'stories' from the DVD, which are
intended to illustrate the theme of the chapter (for example the story of Helen Keller and another
about the Berlin Wall).
The book talks of "6 Cancers" that inhibit people's greatness:
