Shutout Luongo in
Team Canada win
Team Canada started out a little bit nervous
in their first Olympic game. But in the end, the
sold-out crowd in Canada Hockey Place had
enough to cheer for. Jarome Iginla and Dany
Heatley scored two goals each in the 8-0 shu-
tout over Norway. The credits for the shutout
belonged to goalie Roberto Luongo, who made
15 saves. Canada’s next game is against Switzer-
land on February 18.
Canada’s second gold
for Maelle Ricker
Four years after her crash in the Turin final,
snowboard cross racer Maelle Ricker avenged
herself. On Cypress Mountain, she won
Canada’s second gold medal of these Olympic
games, beating Deborah Anthonioz from
France and Olivia Nobs from Switzerland.
Ricker, a North Vancouver native, became the
first woman to win gold on home soil, two days
after Alexandre Bilodeau won the first gold for
Canada.
Errors overshadow
biathlon programme
Yesterday German Magdalena Neuner and
Swede Bjorn Ferry won gold medals on
biathlon persuit. Problems occurred during the
start, when game officials sent different skiers
away to early or to late. People spoke about
the ‘blackest day’ in biathlon history.

dif ferent mascots
For every Olympics, the representing Olympic
committees find new ways to get fans involved.
With their own mascot, countries want to show
what they‘re made of.

The Australian ‘boxing kangaroo’ had the privile-
ge to be named as the first incident during these
Olympic games. The brown colored mammal with
red boxing gloves stands for the fighting spirit Au-
stralia has. It was shown on a flag, two storeys high,
in the Olympic Village.
According to the IOC, the Australians had to re-
move the flag, because the mascot is a restricted
trademark. But don’t mess with Aussies’ kangaroo.
It’s still hanging in the air, and keeps fighting.

How is it to have a medal celebration in the
Holland Heineken House? Ruben Houkes
knows.The judoka won at the summer
Olympics in 2008 a bronze medal in his
weight class under 60 kilograms. Right now,
Houkes is in Vancouver to visit the winter
Olympics.
What have you been going lately?
Mainly, I watched a lot of speed skating. I’ve seen
the 5.000, 3.000 and 500 meter races. Sven Kra-
mer was skating very well. I’ve got a lot of respect
for him; being under so much pressure and still
become the new Olympic champion.
Could you compare the Holland Heineken
House in Richmond with the one in Beijing?
Like Beijing, this place is enormous. it just looks a

was also present at the summer Olympics in Bei-
jing. In Vancouver, Tjemp hopes he can fire up the
Dutch athletes to great heights. You will not find
him that much on flags, but in the Holland Hei-
neken House he will be present at every medal ce-
lebration.
And how about Canada? Looking at the sea of
red in the first hockey game against Norway, the
Canadians certainly know what to wear. For the
Olympics, however, VANOC decided to use three
different mascots. First, there is Quatchi, a young
sasquatch who lives in the mysterious forests of
Canada. Then there’s Sumi. He shows the different
variety of Canada with a hat of orca whale, wings of
the thunderbird and the legs of a black bear.
The third mascot for the 2010 games is Miga, a
young sea bear who lives in the ocean of British
Columbia. Together, the three mascots show all the
differences that Canada has to offer.

little bit different. Of course, I went to the medal
celebration of Sven Kramer. I wanted to see if
the atmosphere was the same. And I must say, I
watched with great pleasure. The atmosphere was
terrific.
If you could make the decision, who would
you like to drink a beer with?
That’s got to be Sven Kramer, definitely. For win-
ning Olympic gold. But I’m about to leave soon,
and he still has to compete in three races, so I
think it’s gonna be tough to make that arrange-
ment. Perhaps we could meet in the Netherlands.
