Four Futuristic Vertical Farm Concepts That Defy

Gravity
August 02, 2013
Living in a city has increased demand for locally grown food, but it certainly makes it harder for residents to obtain
that kind of produce. Some architects and designers have been dreaming up the best way to bring fresh food into our
cities, and be as eco-friendly as possible while doing it. Here are some of the biggest and most intense concepts for
the next vertical farms that could pop up in a city near you.

New York Breathing Machine Superskyscraper by IAD

This superskyscraper developed by Independent Architectural Diplomacy (IAD) combines commercial and
recreational space to create a net-positive structure that would serve uptown Manhattan. Indoor spaces such as
private offices and a hotel are linked by a spiral pathways of outdoor gardens that are the lung of the building. The
skyscraper achieves carbon neutrality by using solar panels and microturbines within the building plan that use
natural conduction flows. Temperature flow of interior and exterior portions of the building are managed by a
ventilated ETFE skin built into the facades framework that takes advantage of good weather conditions. Even the
type of foliage has been taken into accountthe vertical gardens will include perennial trees and conifers to protect
against winds and avoid a wind-tunnel effect within the structural open spaces.

The Billboard Park by EFGH Architectural Design Studio

The Billboard Park is a concept by the New York based EFGH Architectural Design Studio to create a recreational
landscape in the industrial area of Rosario, Argentina. The design uses both vertical and horizontal space with its

honeycomb structure, forming an interactive piece that offers views of the Paran River and vertical gardens. The
green side of Billboard Park, which uses a soil-free growth medium to sustain its vertical garden, faces the river, and
the asphalt side faces the highway and surrounding neighborhood.

EDITT Tower by TR Hamzah & Yeang

Not only does TR Hamzah & Yeangs design for the Ecological Design In The Tropics (EDITT) Tower have nearly half
of the buildings surface area covered in organic, local vegetation, the designs also lay out how the 26-story
skyscraper will be built out of recycled and recyclable materials. In addition, 855 square meters of this tower will be
covered with solar panels that are projected to produce enough energy to satisfy 40 percent of the buildings needs.
The building will also have a rain water harvesting system to power the internal piping and feed the vegetation, and it
will include an energy plant to convert human sewage into biogas.

Amazon Biosphere: Retailer Gets Glass Dome Headquarters
Article by Steph, filed under Offices & Commercial in the Architecture category.

How much more creative could you be if you were working in a stunning faceted glass dome
every day? Some lucky Amazon workers will get to find out, as the City of Seattles design
panel has approved plans for new structures at the companys headquarters. Designed by
international firm NBBJ, the project will consist of three connected biospheres with a steel
framework.

Each of the 25 to 35-meter-high biospheres will offer five floors of flexible work spaces along
with about 65,000 square feet of open green space with both new and mature trees. The
futuristic-looking design is meant to feel like a public park, and will be part of a larger green
space known as Block 19.

The geometric pattern of the steel is is called a Catalan Skin, based on a pattern of
numbers in mathematics. The resulting shapes look a bit like sand dollars.

Not everyone is a fan of the planned additions. Curbed Seattle saidOur initial thought was
that they resembled spores, slowly growing and spreading across the city until they encase
all our trees.

The Dragonfly by Vincent Callebaut

This 100% self-sufficient energy building design by Vincent Callebaut can accomodate up to 28 different agricultural
fields, allowing it to produce all kinds of fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, and dairy. The concept is designed for
Roosevelt Island close to Manhattan and spans 132 floors and 600 vertical meters that combine offices, research
labs, and housing with orchards, farms, and food production rooms. The steel and glass wings of the structure will
be used for plant and animal farming to maintain proper soil nutrient levels and allow for the reuse of biowaste, and
the spaces in between the wings take take advantage of solar energy by collecting warm air in the exo-structure
during the winter.

McEuen Park Concept Plan Public Questionnaire

1.
Thank you for taking the time to answer the following questions about the McEuen Park Concept Plan.
Please provide your NAME, ADDRESS, and E-MAIL at end of survey, in order to allow your responses to
be accurately counted and allow us to respond to questions you may have.

Front Street Promenade/Parking/Freedom Fountain- This area along the

north side of the park concept plan incorporates several critical design
considerations that set the framework from which the layout of the park
and its activities have been structured.

1. PEDESTRIAN CONNECTIONS are proposed at 4th Street between

Sherman and Front Street and along Front Street between 2nd & 3rd.
These strong physical and visual pedestrian connections to Sherman
Avenue and to Independence Point / City Park will be closed to day-today traffic, but open to emergency, service and buses.
These corridors will have a definite pedestrian feel and streetscape
elements, promoting a safer more pleasant connection from the park to
other areas of town.

2. FRONT STREET PROMENADE is located along the south side of Front

Ave and will remain as 2-way traffic, but will have increased parking on
the north curb in a diagonal layout (78 spaces) vs. todays parallel
parking (40 spaces).
The south side of Front St. will be widened between 30ft. to 50ft.,
allowing for increased opportunities of seating, activities, public art,
views and access into the park, signage and streetscape elements.

increase of 420 from the existing 530 space, Diamond Lot parking. This
two level parking deck is accessed from 3rd St. & 6th St. and open to the
park.
This concept allows open park to be increased by nearly 5 acres.

4. FREEDOM FOUNTAIN is located south of 4th St. & Front Avenue at the
primary pedestrian access point into the park. This water feature would
approach 12 acre in size and allow for movement through the fountain
for access to different areas of the park.
It is intended to be viewed both night and day and could have
impressive fountains, jets and streams of water choreographed at
different times or for scheduled events. It becomes a signature element
within the park.

region of the park concept proposes a large, hard surfaced gathering
area where public events of significant size could occur. This area offers
park users the chance to experience the waterfront both physically and
visually during organized or informal activities. New public mooring
docks are proposed that could double the existing count.

5. EVENTS such as Farmers Markets, Arts/Crafts Fairs, Auto/Boat

To address the need of eco friendly public facilities, Soyoung Park has been designed an Econology Life
Bicycle Shelter. This bicycle shelter concept combines 2 important elements in humans life : nature and
technology. The green space and morphological characteristics that rise from surface of the land symbolically
express nature within surrounding environment. An electronic media wall helps all bicycle riders with its
navigation that consumes minimal electricity with the use of solar panels. A great shelter for your bicycle or
just to hangout.

Urban Park - Area view

Tainan main station master plan is imagined as a cultural based community and nature intervention,
with sustainable residential development and the potential for natural habitat areas. It aims to be a
cultural and vibrant edutainment intervention as well as a secluded haven of peace and tranquillity.
Tainan main station is conceived as a new gateway of Taiwans history.

Station platform - Preservation view

The proposal aims to reconcile community and biodiversity. It will act as an eco-transitional urban
device, transferring and linking the diversity of the surrounding urban districts and programmes. The
concept behind the master plan proposal derives from the areas original function as transportation
node. The proposal will maintain the areas historical identity, whilst providing a boundary free and a
self-sufficient urban planning, incorporating a number of sustainability systems.
