While traveling through Barcelona (/topic/barcelona) last year, I paid a visit to The Museu Picasso, which is Pablo Picassos biggest
museum in the world. Located in a beautiful, serene lane, it is housed in five adjoining medieval palaces, following the architecture of
the quintessential Gothic civil Catalan. It accommodates more than 3500 works of the iconic artist.
Generally, Picasso (/topic/picasso) is associated and credited with Paris, and rightly so. He lived there for the longest time and even
died in coty. However, the fact that the majority of his first 20 years were spent in Barcelona is somewhere overshadowed. Once he
moved out of Barcelona, he never came back, largely because of the General Franco regime. Picasso had categorically told his lifelong
friend and secretary Jaume Sabartes, who was also the driving force behind this museum in Barcelona, that he will not step foot in
Spain as long as Franco remained the ruler.
However, while exploring the deluge of awe-inspiring work in The Museu Picasso and the way it was looked after, the one sentiment I
could sense in the air was pride. Barcelona was so proud of the fact that Picasso spent his formative years in their city. The subtext of
the whole atmosphere in the museum wasPicasso may have become a star and received glory in Paris, but the seeds were sown
here. It seemed like an attempt to reclaim some of the credit for Picassos genius.
I came out of the museum fascinated, overwhelmed, and a bit ashamed as well. While it was inspiring to see the way Barcelona had
preserved their culture and their artist, it was depressing to recollect that India had thrown out MF Husain, who was a special
(/topic/special) invitee along with Picasso at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil in 1971. Let alone being proud of the fact that a globally
acclaimed and revered artist was born and brought up in India, we forced him to live in exile in the last years of his life; we humiliated
him. Why? Because he treated Hindu gods and deities as visual stimuli, depicting them unclothed.
Following the publishing of those paintings in a magazine in 1996, several cases were filed against him. His house was attacked, art
work vandalised. He even received death threats. Almost all right wingers endorsed it. And eventually, the iconic artist had to leave the
country. The way these events unfolded was disgraceful and deplorable. Is Hinduism so fragile that a few paintings can hamper its
credibility? And more importantly, why is the Hindu religion called tolerant then?
Husains importance to Indian art goes back to the 1940s. He was one of the vital members of the Progressive Artists Group, the most
influential group of modern artists in India, formed in 1947. The objective of the Progressive Artists' Group was to shun the revivalist
nationalism, developed by Bengal school of art and to encourage and augment an Indian avant-garde. They wanted to paint with
absolute freedom for content and technique. Husain, along with FN Souza, SH Raza, SK Bakre and a few more, changed the shape of
Indian contemporary art. During those days, Husain had written in Frontline, the Royal Academy, which was British-oriented, and
the revivalist school in Mumbai, which was not a progressive movement, were the two prevalent schools of thought. These two we
decided to fight, and we demolished them. The movement to get rid of these influences and to evolve a language that is rooted in our
own culture was a great movement. It was important because any great change in a nation's civilisation begins in the field of culture.
Culture is always ahead of other political and social movements. He had further mentioned, Our concern was to evolve not only art
as a profession to make a living, but to do serious research to evolve a language for Indian contemporary art. It had to be rooted in
our culture and all the points of reference had to be ours, but it had to use modern techniques as well.
The paradox, though, is that the man who played a pivotal role in incorporating Indian culture in Indian contemporary art and shared
such an intimate relationship with it, was chastised on cultural basis.
However, Husain is not the only stalwart to have been mistreated by Indians and revered by the world.
The Checkpoint Charlie Museum in Berlin has a peace section, which is followed by some moving and disturbing stories during the fall
of Berlin wall. The section had photographs of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and so on. But there was a statue as well. The only
statue. It was of Mahatma Gandhi. And the caretaker of that section was evidently pleased to see us as we hailed from Bapus land.
However, in India, we still have a good chunk despising Gandhi. Jawaharlal Nehru is another example of it. Revered outside, loathed in
his own land.
When one travels across Europe, the infrastructure, standard of living, roads, discipline and many more things are alluring and
enviable. But that can be explained by citing that India is a developing and a diverse nation, which European countries are not.
However, you do not have to be developed to realise the value of your artists and cherish them. You have to be cultured.
Husain is now gone but perhaps there is something we could still learn from Europe in the exuberant way it preserves its artists and
culture.
In Amsterdam, too, there is a huge museum of Vincent Van Gogh, who we know as one of the greatest artists but he was also the one
who shot himself in the chest and committed suicide at the age of 35 because the misery and agony that his life was, became
unbearable to him. His brothers wife dug out his paintings after his death and the rest is history. Had those museums not been set

Picasso had to leave Spain due to Franco the fascist. Hussain had to leave India because of the fascist wind that was blowing, with mounting
instances of mob violence. Spain recovered from fascism after Franco. India is entering a grey area : we have a PM with a fascist's record of
violence, but one who is elected democratically. The question mark is whether India will recover when Modi is gone. Alas, I fear that it may not, as it
is a fissile country (as noted by The Economist). Hindu temples depict nudity, so strictly it should not have been offensive. If Hussain had been a
Hindu artist who depicted these, maybe no one would have noticed, but being a Muslim in the changed climate of aggressive Hinduism, it was a
mistake to enter into this area and draw inspiration from Hindu motifs, as there were trouble makers looking for violence. India was not liberal
enough, nor was the population educated enough like in Europe. And unlike Europe, fascism would not be spurned in India as Indians had not had its
experience. It is a country where mobs can descend into savagery at the drop of a hat over an imagined religious insult.

Nonsense...MF Hussain spend 95% of his productive life in India...he left India primarily because the Wahabbi Ruler of Qatar gave him
millions of Petro-Dollars and gave him citizenship of Arab country...so for money Hussain ji ditched his Indian nationality and left for Qatar
where he drew picctures for the Amir of Qatar..he was not even happy there so he used to spend more time in London holidaying at 5-start
hotels mostly...

No, he left because of threats from Shiv Sainiks. He did not need any riches. Your response is typical of fascists - commit atrocities
and lie. Long after the present fascists are gone and forgotten, Indian and foreign people will remember and collect his art. Artists are
not forgotten, thugs are.

You moron, he lived for 90 full years in Mumbai and not a single time was he even touched by Shiv Sena ! You means to say
at age 90, he suddenly worried about Shiv Sena? Most of his painting were focussed on naked women or Goddesses in
India...but once he went to Qatar, he completely stopped doing that that and focused on drawing normal, clothed humans as
he know what can happen to him under Sharia Law...

a devote to leave his "Kama" outside of the temple. There was no such monument inside temple wall but outside the temple

The right or wrong perception have nothing to do with the exposure of Nudity, irrespective of display found in stone or flesh, in
front or within a Temple or any public place, including all media. After all one can only go inside from the outside. All beings,
irrespective of tribe, cast, race, religion, country etc are born with each of all the sensory mechanisms like Kama, Ghrana,
Sparsha, Krodha, etc within it. The generation of these signals are fully automatic and unstoppable. However, the ethical &
intensity levels of public display of the reactions would vary inversely
with the degree of controls developed by each being up to the time. This is true for all types of beings from saintly to beastly.
Do Muslims show anger or hatred only to the Hindus (or vice-versa) and not to any of their own tribe or relation, friends etc.
Just see some of the expressions used in the comments on the subject to each other. If we start from the introspectively
correct premise, we may come closer to each other more in future

Painting Hindu gods in obscene poses & naked when they have been described in Hindu scriptures with the colourful jewellery & clothes
surely needs condemning. What makes you think that painting Hindu Gods naked & playing around with Hindu sentiments is fine but you
dare paint a picture of Mohamad & All the Sec ular Muslims will want to hang you or behead you. If u feel India has a 'fascist' PM then kindly
go to Porkistan to see what true Fascism is where Hindus have been reduced through rapes & forcible conversions.

What do we see in Khajurao and Konarak ? What is a siva lingam that Hindu women clutch and pour milk on and worship ? Why this
prudishness ? Hussain drew it within a cultural framework where these things are normal. You just want to show all of a sudden
some mistaken Hindu pride, when all this normal in Hindu culture.

Can you tell us why Hussain did not depict any prophets or their family member in nude? he could have taken inspiration from Hindu painting
and use that to paint Islamic icons. But he did not. He was not a free spirit painter.
In contrast salman Rashdie did not hesitate in writing negatively about his own religious icons. So Hussain had no value to secular minded
people only Islamists and Taquiyas value him.

Because in Islamic culture that would be offensive. In Hindu culture that should not be offensive as you have Kahjurao and Konark
add lingam worship, so what is the big deal.

Your mothers and sisters did not offer to pose, and Hussain did not ask. Hindu goddesses and lingams abound in Khajurao and
Konark, then why should he not paint these things ? His only mistake was that he did not realize that Hindus had become intolerant.
You claim that we had a quality which no other nation had. that is empathy towards fellow humans. But we had untouchablity and sati,
so how realistic is your claim ? You yourself are displaying intolerance and fanaticism.

There is no Sati practise at all but Johar was there where Hindu women would jump into fires when Islamic Jihadis came

untochability & Sati . So , would you like to kill all the Hindus . Would you like to sail 'em to Mars ? Those anomalies had been

Naked is not vulgar in Hindu culture - see Khajurao. Man and women, man and man, and man and horse are all shown. Nothing is
vulgar in Hinduism, you do not know what is Hinduism.

Why has nudity become suddenly offensive to Hindus ? It is all political posturing. Hindus want to recreate ancient Hindu India,
