APTAIN ROBERT BARLOWand his wife Tasha, owners of Texas

Sailing since 2000, offered a luxurious 41 Beneteau Oceanis sailing yacht
for Waterways summer cover photo shoot. This jewel of a sailing yacht is
part of a fleet of high quality sailboats from 21 to 41 feet managed by Texas Sailing and
located at the Lakeway Marina.
Texas Sailing offers an impressive menu of sailing experiences including outings on exquisite captained sailing charters, sail training for both the novice and the
accomplished sailor, bareboat chartering and sailboat ownership, providing options
for every imaginable need. Robert Barlows enthusiasm and joy for sailing inspired all
of us to get on the water again soon with Texas Sailing. www.texassailing.com
Maria and Kyndal Harrington are the driving force behind Maria & Kyndals
Boutiques in Westlake and Lakeway and The Duchess of Lakeway Boutique and have
been featured in Waterways before! They provided wardrobe for three Waterways
cover shoots, and they grace this cover with their take on summer fashion. This
mother-daughter duo has assembled a collection of hip looks and great brands at
all three of their Austin stores. They offer considerable diversity in lines and price
points to appeal to women of all ages. Maria shops markets in both L.A. and N.Y. and
will be adding more designer collections at The Duchess.
Most women love the boutique experience. They love the intimacy and the personal
attention they receive, the easy access and the easy parking. Many become friends with
boutique owners and rely on their fashion sense and savvy to keep their wardrobe
up-to-date. If owning your own boutique sounds like every womans dream job, that
dream can quickly become a nightmare. Its a very tough business, and only the most
talented entrepreneurs can make it work successfully. I came up with a list of 29 boutiques that have gone out of business just in Lake Travis, Steiner Ranch and Westlake
over the past 15 years. So if have some favorite boutiques, be sure to support them!
The Waterways Fashion Contest in this issue features a summer outfit from each
of our participating advertisers. Be sure to vote for your favorite on our website,
waterwaysmagazine.com. One lucky winner will be drawn from all the voters and will
receive a $150 credit to spend at the boutique they voted for!

QUADSKI XL & GAS TRAILER

STORY BY RICH RITZEMA
PHOTOS COMPLIMENTS OF SAIL & SKI
Quadski XL delivers exhilarating performance and responsive control.

OATING IS Afun activity that brings families together and

creates memories that will last a lifetime. Despite the benefits of
boating there are sometimes unique challenges that make it difficult to enjoy getting out on the water conveniently. Here are two creative
solutions from Sail & Ski Center that make boating easy for their customers
by enhancing lake access and making it safe and easy to refuel a boat.

GIBBS SPORTS AMPHIBIANS - QUADSKI XL

The coolest vehicle on land and water
Living along the shoreline of a Central Texas lake provides an opportunity to share unique experiences on the lake with family and friends. For
some, being on the water is an everyday event. For others, the ability to
get on the water is an obstacle. That was yesterday. Imagine being able to
ride from your garage, down the boat ramp or shoreline, out on the water,
and then back to your garage all on one vehicle. The Quadski XL offers
unparalleled access to the lake without the need for a dock, a boat, a boat
ramp, a trailer, or a tow vehicle.
The Quadski XL is the coolest personal watercraft on land, and the coolest ATV on water. Ride it on land and water its both an ATV and a PWC.
Pressing the H2O Mode button rotates the wheels up into the wheel wells.
In less than five seconds the Quadski converts from land mode to water
mode! After some fun on the lake, getting home is quick and easy. Simply
press the Land Mode button when you approach the shore, and the wheels
drop down. It doesnt get any easier than that.
Climb on, feel the freedom, and leave the boundaries behind! The
Quadski XL ushers in a new era of thrilling, go-anywhere recreation. You
no longer have to choose between land and water. The Quadski XL delivers spirited and stable performance for up to two riders. From trailhead
to beachhead, youll experience ground-breaking fun and excitement.
Powered by the durable but lightweight BMW K1300 engine that produces
up to 140 horsepower, the Quadski XL is capable of reaching speeds of
45 MPH on both land and water. (Note: The Quadski XL is not street legal.)

Quadski XL blends a surefooted feel with nimble handling.

GAS TRAILER - PRO 110 MARINE

The choice for easy refueling solutions
If you live on the water refueling your boat can be a challenging. Many
on-water gas stations require traveling a long distance for fuel and paying a premium price. Alternately, you can utilize numerous 5 gallon fuel
containers to transport fuel, which is an ineffective, time-consuming and
potentially dangerous solution. The company Gas Trailer has solved these
issues with their various 110 gallon gas trailer solutions. For example, their
Pro 110 Marine Gas Trailer is a towable, lightweight, and compact refueling
solution with a fast flowing electric pump and automatic shutoff. The Pro
110 Marine Gas Trailer is capable of dispensing fuel at a rate of up to three
times a gas station pump, allowing for quick and efficient refueling. Packed
with a 50 hose, maneuvering the swivel nozzle to a boat is hassle free.
When it comes time to clean up, the spring retractable reel easily recoils the
hose so its ready to go the next time. For situations that require a longer
reach, several hose extension options are available. A lockable Control Box
ensures your Gas Trailer is secure when not in use and conceals the hose
reel, pump, fuel meter, fuel filter, and battery. The key lock On/Off power
switch provides an additional level of protection. While towing the Gas
Trailer, the auto-charge circuit ensures the battery is ready to go when the
refueling destination is reached. The Pro 110 Marine can be used with gasoline, diesel, kerosene, ethanol, methanol, avgas, and jet fuel. The 25GPM
pump is aviation rated and includes a resettable fuel meter and 10 micron
particulate filter. With aluminum and stainless steel construction, the Pro
110 Marine Gas Trailer will provide many years of dependable service in
individual or commercial environments. The Gas Trailer is available in
multiple models that provide a variety of options to meet almost any budget. The Gas Trailer is DOT compliant, and the fuel tank is DOT approved.
Learn more about the Gas Trailer at www.sailandski.com/learn-moreabout-our--gas-trailer.
Sail & Ski is a full service Boating Lifestyle store with a make boating
easy focus. Sail & Ski was voted Boating Industry Magazines #1 Boat
Dealership in North America and holds a host of industry awards that
recognize a commitment to serving its customers. Sail & Ski is located on
RR620 in Lakeway.

OLBY CALLED ITa game changer. Kembree said, We are lucky

because most schools dont get to have stuff like this. They may differ in age by 8 years and attend school on two different campuses, but
the school programs impacting their lives are funded by the same source the
Lake Travis Education Foundation. LTEF has been supporting the Lake Travis
Independent School District for 30 years, donating almost $2 million to projects
and programs on every campus which otherwise may not have been possible.
Why, in such a property wealthy district, would your public schools need help
funding education? School finance is complicated, and specifically in LTISD, its
wildly convoluted. The short version is this: Because of the rapid growth in our area,
our local homestead exemption, the Robin Hood
Joel & Rene Mitchell, Lori & Scott Morrison
act and a myriad of other factors, the state takes
millions from our school district every year. They
recaptured over $28 million last year alone, leaving local educators with over 500 new students
to teach and a $3.9 million deficit to begin the
school year. One source of funding they cant
take away is your donation to the Lake Travis
Education Foundation.
This year the Board of Directors will be
presenting the school district with a check for
$225,000. Those dollars are raised year-round
at events and campaigns like our Birdies by the

STABLISHED IN 1925in Los Angeles, California, the National

Charity League is a distinctive mother-daughter service organization with
over 196 Chapters and more than 55,000 active members in 23 states.
Building bonds of social awareness and compassion, mothers and daughters work
together on projects of community service, leadership and cultural enrichment.
Last year, NCL members nationwide volunteered a cumulative total of 1,325,272
hands-on hours directly with nonprofit organizations in their communities.
Leah Mulkey
Founding members established the Lake Travis Chapter in 2013.
Mothers are referred to as Patronesses while daughters are called
Ticktockers. Patronesses meet monthly and hold specialized positions
as part of their membership requirement. Ticktockers meet independently by grade level and elect their own officers. At a Tea at the Hills
Country Club on March 8, the Lake Travis Chapter presented the new
slate of officers for 2015-2016.
Guest speaker Tricia Graham spoke of the work of Mobile Loaves &
Fishes, the organization she and her husband, Alan Graham, founded
17 years ago. As Graham explained, Although Mobile Loaves & Fishes
Erika & Kathryn Rorer
has served over 4 million meals, it really is not about a food ministry but
(the meals) provide the bridge to make connections with the people we
serve. We believe homelessness is not caused by alcohol or drugs, but
by the catastrophic loss of family and community. Mobile Loaves and
Fishes is building a sustainable path out of homelessness in Austin with
a Community First Village on a 27-acre site it purchased just outside the
city limits. A combination of housing options are being built, including
100 5th Wheel RVs with full kitchens and bathrooms; 100 micro-homes
(144 sq. ft. 180 sq. ft.) and 25 canvas-sided cottages (12 x 12). The
micro-homes and the canvas-sided cottages will have electricity,
Madison & Michelle Wood
and residents will use outdoor kitchens and private bathrooms and
laundry facilities available throughout the property. 2400 volunteers have been working on this village, and the first 10 families
moved in in April. The village has places for worship, study and
fellowship, walking trails and a community garden, as well as a
chicken operation and bee hives to provide honey. All residents will
pay rent, and many will work jobs to maintain Village operations.
This is a true community that will lift homeless men and women up
from the streets into permanent housing. It may be the Lake Travis
Chapter will choose this as one of their volunteer projects.

Granite Security
SECURING HOMES AND BUSINESSES
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

ECURITY ISperhaps the most fundamental requirement man needs to survive and
to thrive. Generally speaking, citizens of the United States enjoy remarkable securities guaranteed by the Constitution, the rule of law and a civil and democratic society.
Imagine living in Nigeria and learning that your daughter, studying at a private school, had been
kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram. Those girls, kidnapped over a year ago, have still
not been found.
Beyond the security we enjoy as Americans, neighborhoods in the greater Lakeway-Bee Cave
communities have, for decades, enjoyed the safety of small towns, remote from the types of crimes
that plague larger cities. That immunity from threat has diminished with growth and the transformation of these sleepy villages into suburban communities.
Local Police Departments urge drivers to lock it or lose it, and residents are also urged to keep
their garage doors closed and locked during the day and at night. A review of the Lakeway Police
Departments April Crime Reports revealed 14 thefts, 1 breaking and entering and 1 property crime.
One simple way to protect the security of your property and your loved ones is to install a
home system that monitors security and fire. Granite
Security Systems, a family business locally owned by
Lakeway residents Susan Sumners and Kellye Babin,
will celebrate its 18th anniversary this year. Check
out their reviews on YELP!
Granite Security works with builders to pre-wire
new homes and can also add a security system to an
existing home or business. They also offer locallybased monitoring of existing systems, no matter who
installed them.
Granite Securitys highly-trained technicians are
masters of all the new advances in security technologies, including the installation of sophisticated camera systems that can be viewed remotely from your
phone or computer. This feature allows residents to
check on their home from work or while traveling.

LENA DAVIS,former supermodel and President and Founder

of the I AM WATERS Foundation, spoke eloquently of her story
and her Foundation to hundreds of guests at the 4th Annual
I AM WATERS Luncheon held at the Four Seasons Austin on March 12.
Davis was accompanied by Cheryl Tiegs, Kim Charlton, Houston native
Kelly Emberg, Ruby Stewart and Julie Anderson, all fashion supermodels
who have come together to support I AM WATERS in a national campaign.
Charmaine McGill, a shining force for leadership, volunteerism and philanthropy in Austin, was the special Honoree of the event.
In a statement on the I AM WATERS website, Davis states, My life as
it stands now is far from where I started. As one of four kids raised by a
single mother on less than $3,000 a year and food stamps, my life was lived
in extreme need and on the margins of society, with struggle as a constant
companion. After reading Elena Davis/Personal Stories About My Life @
elenadavis.org, the above description doesnt begin to express the turbulence, deprivation and dysfunction of her childhood. Elena and her siblings
were dependent on the care of a mother whose own difficult childhood left
her emotionally crippled and incapable of assuming the role of a loving parent. She was frequently abusive to Elena and her siblings, both verbally and
physically, and often indifferent and self-absorbed.

After attending 12 schools by the time she was 14, a string of lucky breaks
made Elenas dream of becoming a fashion model a reality. At 16, she was
signed by the Ford Agency and set off for Paris to begin what became a highly
successful career as a print and fashion model, ultimately returning to live and
work in New York. Her marriage to Houston oil man and entrepreneur Gregg
Davis in 1994 exposed her to a life of even greater wealth and privilege. But
later circumstances, including the death of her well-loved father-in-law, led her
to re-examine her life, and particularly, her childhood. Its chaotic, transient
nature made her believe she didnt belong anywhere, a feeling often shared by
the homeless. One hot summer day in Houston, Elena was approached at an
intersection by a homeless woman. She was already reaching for some money
to give her, but the woman didnt want money. She wanted water. And this
was the inspiration for I AM WATERS, whose goal is to provide the homeless
with fresh, clean bottled water, delivered with a daily, inspirational message
of hope and love. Partnerships with existing homeless organizations, shelters
and churches handle distribution through existing networks or facilities.
Mitchell Gibbs, Executive Director of Front Steps, noted that because of the
impact of I AM WATERS, last summer there were no calls to 911 for heat-related emergencies. He also emphasized that Austin needs more housing stock and
housing vouchers because housing, not shelter, is the solution to homelessness.

SUSAN G. KOMEN AUSTINS 4TH ANNUAL BENEFIT GALA

STORY BY MONALISA SAENZ | PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

HE FOURTH ANNUALPink! party, an event benefiting Susan G. Komen Austin, was held on April
24 at the Hyatt Regency Austin and raised nearly $400,000. Karen Shultz and Jennifer Stevens cochaired the event which was presented by Texas Breast Specialists and Texas Oncology. Pink! was started in 2012 and, prior to this event, had raised more than $733,000 to help save lives and fight breast cancer. As a
fundraising event, it ranks second only to Komen Austins Race for the Cure .
More than 400 supporters gathered in the Zilker Ballroom and enjoyed a celebratory evening that included
a VIPink cocktail reception, sponsored by Lexus of Austin, an a cappella performance by One Note Stand, dinner, an awards ceremony and a live auction.
As Interim Executive Director Karen Shultz noted in her address: This week
U.S. government researchers released new statistics on breast cancer cases. The
incidence of breast cancer in women is on the rise. Researchers predict a 50%
increase of new breast cancers by 2030. That is staggering! The keynote speech
was given by Dr. Powel Brown, a breast medical oncologist and Komen funded
researcher, who spoke on the progress that has been made in improvements in
diagnosis and treatments for the disease.
Laurel Kinney;
Kathleen Lucente, Board Member; Cynthia McGrail
The event was also an opportunity to honor some standout individuals and organizations who have dedicated themselves to supporting Komen Austins mission.
The Pink Diamond Awards, presented by St. Davids Foundation, went to community partners Texas Oncology and Texas Breast Specialists. Iris Davis, Deborah
Davis Groves and Randall D. Groves were also recognized for their philanthropic
efforts. News anchor Terri Gruca and the outreach group Women in Strides both
received Excellence in Advocacy Awards. John Mathieson received the Outstanding
Board Member
Volunteer Award for his many years of commitment to the organization.
Julie Sanders, Scott Sanders
Special recognition went to Amy Mosier, who received the Ana Sierra
Warrior Award. Mosier was already involved with Komen Austins Race for the
Cure before facing her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2014. Amazingly, Mosier
Maxine Roberts, Abby Argo, Vicki Roberts
decided to participate once again in Race for
Christen Edel,
Michelle Martin the Cure just two weeks after undergoing a
double mastectomy. She assembled a team of
133 friends and family, a group she named
The Breast is Yet to Come. Mosiers team
rallied to complete the race and raised an
impressive $11,000.
Since 1999, Komen Austin has invested
nearly $11 million into breast health services
and educational efforts in Bastrop, Caldwell,
Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. The
organization is committed to saving lives locally by removing barriers to care for uninsured
Ilona &
and underinsured community members.

The Garden Room

HE 8212 CLUBSpring Fashion Show presented by Patty Hoffpauir of

the Garden Room covered all the bases, everything from Austin casual to
Austin chic. And 8212 Club members walked the walk down the runway with
poise and panache! The Garden Room has a well-deserved reputation as the go-to
destination for the hip, trendy and well-heeled women of Austin. This not-so-Secret
Garden of fashion is a well-loved Austin icon, with a devoted base of fans who know
they will always find something unique that they could find nowhere else.
Patty selects lines that solve three critical problems women face in Austin. The first
is keeping chic in Austins heat. Remember linen? Breathable fabrics are key. She also
has a selection of dresses that can literally be balled up and thrown in a suitcase for
8 hours. One good shake and you are ready to appear at the most elegant event,
including a wedding! Her clients are summer travelers!
As you can see from the photo below, this group had some fun!

VER THE PASTfew seasons, there has been quite a bit of skinny on the fashion runway, and
that includes more than just the models. Skinny jeans, leggings and, yes, even jeggings. Most of us
have them and are proud to show off in our slim-cut trousers. But, a girl can get a bit tired from
so much sameness. Luckily, this season, designers are shaking things up with a variety of interesting pant
styles. The new silhouettes have a light, easy-breezy feel and, when paired with well-chosen tops and shoes,
give off just the right amount of cool-girl nonchalance. (If you need further convincing, think of pant-loving
style icons Katherine Hepburn and Diane Keaton!) Stylish yet less restricting, the new styles are perfect for
warm weather months.
The palazzo is the trouser equivalent to a fun, gypsy-style skirt. (Tip: a true palazzo is virtually indistinguishable from a long skirt when you are not in motion.) With the extra-wide palazzo style, youll want to refrain from
adding more volume on top. Pair with a sleeveless tank, close-fitting tee or a crop top instead.
Perhaps to our disbelief, a wide-leg 80s favorite has returned the culotte! Before you dismiss the cute
gaucho style, know that some designers have slightly modified the form, softening up its appearance by cropping it just above the ankle. These pants look great with a summery top and a pair of flat, Grecian-style sandals.
More slouchy than it is wide, the boyfriend cut is currently the style of choice among fashionable It girls.
Casual and cool, youve probably noticed a slew of celebrities and models sporting the new relaxed look. The
good news is the boyfriend is extremely versatile (available in everything from frayed denim to gauzy haremtype styles), making it perfect for both day and night. Tone down the boyfriends tomboy edge by adding ultrafeminine accessories like layered jewelry and ballet flats.
Remember when being spotted out and about in your workout gear was considered a fashion faux pas? This
time around, designers are introducing sporty track pants that are meant to be worn outside of the gym. Coined
the jogger, this relaxed style looks unexpectedly fresh when paired with a flowy evening top and heels.
If you want to embrace change this summer but simply cannot let go of your skinny pants, prints could be
a less drastic step to updating your look. Everyone from high-end designers to popular mass brands is offering
pants (both slim and wide-cut styles) in playful, eye-catching patterns. For the best effect, choose a solid, understated top and let your legs do the talking.

AIKIKI. SOUTH BEACH.Ipanema. St. Barts. Even if youve never set foot upon the sands
of these dreamy destinations, you can steal summer fashion inspiration that will have you envisioning fruity cocktails, turquoise waters and salty ocean air. Beautiful, beach-inspired looks
can be worn almost anywhere that summer takes you from an exotic island resort to your next-door neighbors pool party. The key to mastering this sexy yet effortless style is to remember a few basic rules. First,
lighten up! Dressing for the beach and anywhere else during summer means nixing stiff, heavy fabrics.
Second, choose items that can be worn multiple ways and layered over or under other pieces. Last but not
least, follow the anything-goes beach aesthetic by taking your daytime outfit into the evening.
Nothing says island siren like a long, cool dress. Fortunately, the maxi dress might be the most universally
flattering trend of the season and can be worn by everyone ranging from waif types to hourglass figures. The
ultra-long, lightweight maxi is breezy and casual but, thanks to its full, ground-skimming skirt, wont leave
you feeling overexposed. Wear the maxi over your favorite bikini during the day and, later, with statement
jewelry for a night on the town.
Channel your inner yacht-hopping fashionista by donning one of summers seductive cover-ups. This
season, designers have presented us with a wealth of options, including sheer mini-dresses, transparent tops
and colorful caftans. These flirty cover-ups are stylish solutions when deciding what to wear while hitting the
beach, or, for those more into the aprs-swim scene, for poolside cocktails. If the occasion calls for a more polished look, the cover-up is quickly transformed with the addition of structured, opaque pieces. For example,
try a caftan over slim pants or a sheer mini-dress over a brightly colored slip.
Even the most avid beach-goer knows a little bit of sunshine goes a long way. Protect your perfect complexion by topping off your ensemble with an oversized sun hat. The result is a chic, screen goddess-on-theFrench Riviera look.
What is a day at the beach without a fantastic new swimsuit? No longer dominated by string bikini styles,
swimwear has taken a fun turn, with many designers adding one-pieces and retro-style bikinis back into the
mix. This seasons one-piece is anything but boring, and many of the new styles show ample skin via provocative side cut-outs and plunging necklines. In a surprising twist, the trend for two-pieces this summer is
actually more coverage. Expect to see plenty of pin-up-girl-inspired, high-waisted briefs and wide-strap bikini
tops frolicking in the sand.

Keeping Healthy and Fit

CRITICAL IMPACT OF GOOD SLEEP

STORY BY KIM HEINEN

HE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL, in partnership

with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Public Good
Projects, released a documentary last fall examining the average
Americans lack of sleep and the associated health consequences. It is estimated that half of all Americans are sleep deprived, not getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep, with substantial
numbers of the population receiving
5 hours or less of sleep per night. The
documentary, titled Sleepless in America,
explores the poor quality of our sleep and
what it is that keeps Americans awake
at night.
According to NIH Director Francis
Collins, M.D., Ph.D., feeling tired is only
one consequence of not getting enough
sleep. Research has linked sleep deprivation to health issues ranging from obesity
Thinkstock/iStock collection/Alliance to cardiovascular disease to mental health
disorders such as depression/anxiety and even Alzheimers disease. In
addition, sleeplessness is responsible for car crashes, medical accidents and
lack of productivity during our waking hours.
Even though up to 80 percent of sufferers arent aware of it, millions of
adults have sleep apnea and one in three adults will suffer from insomnia at

some point in their lives. For those not suffering from sleep disorders, sleep
is not being made a top priority. Rather, Americans are making choices which
impact sleep patterns such as television binge-watching, engaging in social
media or browsing the internet. In addition to keeping us up too late, electronic devices emit blue light which fools the body into thinking it is daytime.
Alarmingly, this sleeplessness epidemic not only affects adults but also
takes a toll on adolescents. Since they are still developing, teenagers need
more sleep than adults, usually 9.25 hours per night, yet it is estimated that
70 percent of high school students are sleep deprived. This consistent lack of
sleep increases teens risk of suicide, mood swings, and delinquency.
The need for a good nights sleep is powerful yet highly underestimated.
John Hoffman of the Public Good Projects points out that a few simple shifts
in habit can be very effective in combatting chronic fatigue. Some suggestions are:
Turn off electronic devices one hour before bedtime.
et up at the same time every day, no matter how little sleep you may
G
have had.
Sleep in a completely dark bedroom.
Hoffman states that lack of sleep is a surprisingly serious public health
issue, and it is essential to enlighten the public before the problem becomes
unmanageable. For more information on Sleepless in America, check your local
listings or http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/sleepless-in-america/.

THE A-B-CS OF L-I-N-ES

Fine lines and wrinkles are a fact of life that begins in the 20s and 30s
and increases with age. But did you know there are two different types of
wrinkles? Dynamic lines are those that occur with movement of the face,
while static lines are those that are present even when the face is at rest.
Lines that occur with frowning are dynamic wrinkles. Because dynamic
wrinkles respond to neurotoxins such as Botox, early treatment in the 20s
and 30s can prevent static lines from forming later on. While the static lines
(those present when the muscle is at rest) do not respond significantly to
neurotoxins like Botox, there are non-surgical procedures that can diminish
their appearance.
Until recently, dermatologists primary strategy for correcting static
lines was to fill them in with a product made of hyaluronic acid. While
such fillers can be very helpful, they dont fix the underlying problem,
which is loss of volume in the upper face. As we age, we lose bone, fat, and
collagen in our skin; particularly in the upper one-third of the face. As a
result of this lost volume the skin begins to sag, creating static wrinkles in
the lower face. Dermatologists on the cutting edge, such as expert injector Dr. Candace Thrash of Fresh Dermatology, now recommend correcting static lines by restoring lost volume to the upper face first, then subtly
filling remaining lines on the lower face. For more information of how to
prevent and correct both dynamic and static lines, call Fresh Dermatology
at 512-615-5600!

Natural Bio Health

Wink

NATURAL BIO HEALTH is a medical clinic located in Lakeway that specializes in bioidentical hormone treatment and medical weight loss. Board
certified physicians are on site Monday through Friday and the medical staff
has more than 70 years of medical experience.
Natural Bio Health is locally owned with 4 clinics in Texas. It was the
first clinic in Texas to offer bioidentical hormone treatment for men and
women. The medical staff was the first to recognize the connection between
hormones and weight loss and has successfully treated thousands of clients
over the past 15 years.
In the early years, the clinical practice served primarily female clients
who were menopausal, suffering from hot flashes, low energy, poor sleep
and excess belly fat. The clients would then refer family members and friends
who were enduring various conditions like difficult periods, migraines, poor
sleep, infertility, weight struggles, low energy and low sex drive. Many of
these women were using anti-depressants and other pharmaceutical drugs
and wanted to stop taking them.
Over the years, female patients would refer their husbands and fathers
and male friends to the clinic. As increasing numbers of men began to understand the benefits of hormone therapy, particularly testosterone, the number
of male patients increased. Natural Bio Health now serves a patient population that is made up of 40% men and 60% women. The client list ranges in
age from pre-teens to post baby boomers.
The clinic offers natural solutions to solve immediate health concerns and
prevention for the future.

hosted by The Womens Club of Greater
Lakeway. Lakeway residents and Co-chairs, Carole
Dann and Karen Morter organized the Ball and did
not overlook a single detail. The Vista Ballroom at
The Lakeway Resort & Spa glittered with sequins
and flowers. Ladies sported bling from head to
toe, adding to the sparkle of the room, while the
gentlemen looked dapper in their black tuxedos,
contributing a sophisticated ambience of their
own to this elegant event. Guests enjoyed the evening by dancing the night away to the wonderful
music provided by The Fabs.
With more than 500 members, the Womens
Club of Greater Lakeway, founded in 1985, is an
organization dedicated to promoting social, cultural,
and intellectual activities for the ladies of Lakeway.
While many of these ladies have come from all over
the world, they now call Lakeway home.

Entrepreneurial Spirit
Thrives in Lake Travis
BUSINESS PROFILES BY MONALISA SAENZ

EMBER OUTDOOR KITCHENS

POINT OF ORIGIN

Launched in early 2015, Ember Outdoor Kitchens is a family-owned and

-operated business that specializes in the construction of custom outdoor
kitchens, backyard fire features
and custom entry gates. At the
helm of the family-run business
are partners Dwayne Gorneau
(President) and his stepson,
Blake Justice (Vice President).
Ember Outdoor Kitchens
began as a hobby for longtime
Spicewood resident Gorneau,
who has been passionate about
barbeque cook-offs for most of
his life. Already engaged in a side business creating custom gates, Gorneau
decided to build his own outdoor kitchen and was soon asked to do the same
for friends. Motivated by the success of his pastimes, he decided to turn his
passions into a full-fledged business. It was a natural next step for Gorneau,
who, in addition to possessing vast construction knowledge, has also owned
several automotive repair shops in the area.
Justice, also a resident of Spicewood, grew up in south Houston but later
relocated to the Austin area while still in high school. Upon graduating from
Lake Travis High School, he obtained an associate degree in architectural
drafting and design and worked in the field of medical sales before joining
his stepfather in launching Ember Outdoor Kitchens. Justice quickly fell in
love with the creativity and freedom that came with his new career. Along
with assisting in the design and construction of the structures, Justice is
responsible for maintaining the companys online presence.
The father-and-stepson duo take pride in offering a turn-key experience
when crafting outdoor kitchens, guiding even the most uninformed customer
through a process that is seamless and stress-free. The two expertly walk
their clients through each step, recommending what is best for them based
on needs and budget. In addition, Gorneau and Justice are hands-on, often
completing much of the construction work themselves. The team is involved
in all steps of the process, including building the structure, recommending appliances, sourcing equipment, picking up and storing items at their
shop and then delivering at the start of construction. Their honest, personal
approach, along with the beautiful, high-quality outdoor kitchens they create, has resulted in a thriving business.
Theres a direct correlation between the amount of hard work weve put
into this company and the success we are starting to have, says Justice. We
are very grateful for this opportunity to serve the Austin area and make our
customers more than happy.
When not busy at their Spicewood-based workshop, Gorneau and Justice
enjoy spending time with their families. Gorneau and his wife, Brenda, and
Justice, with his fiance, Leslie, and young son, Wyatt, can usually be found
surrounded by friends, cooking outdoors (using one of their custom kitchens,
of course) by the pool during the summer.

Point of Origin is a go-to shopping destination for those in search of the perfect gift. The friendly and fashionable Lakeway boutique features an array of
covetable items, including fashion apparel, accessories, home dcor, gourmet products and, of course, unique gifts.
Point of Origin Managing Partner Jaime Cardinal is no stranger to retail.
The Indiana-born Lakeway resident began her career at the age of 15 and
first honed her skills at a small mom-and-pop candy store before eventually moving on to Nordstrom, where she held several management positions
and assisted in the opening of
Austins Barton Creek location. Cardinal, who boasts an
impressive 24 years in the retail
industry, always hoped to own
her own gift shop a dream
that was realized when she
purchased Point of Origin eight
years ago.
As Cardinal aptly puts it,
Point of Origin is where the celebration begins! A warm, inviting ambience is present throughout the store, where Cardinal and staff strive to make
shoppers feel like guests in their home. Customers are treated to snacks and
beverages as they shop (a bar is open in the afternoon for drinks), and store
associates are always on hand to guide shoppers through their selections.
In addition to its stellar customer service, Point of Origin provides free gift
wrapping with purchase and a loyalty program that offers discounts, access
to private events and special giveaways.
Since Cardinal and her parents (also partners in the business) purchased
Point of Origin, it has evolved from an 800-square-foot space to its current
3,500-square-foot location. The chic boutique proudly features many notable brands, including Brighton, Alex & Ani, Ivy Jane, Tribal, Johnny Was,
Michel Design Works and Scout Bags, to name a few. For Cardinal, merchandising the store and helping shoppers find the perfect gift are what she loves
most about her business. With items ranging from inexpensive to moderately
priced, the store promises something for everyone.
For more than 22 years, weve helped Lakeway celebrate birthdays,
anniversaries, holidays, new homes, Fridays, last chemo treatments, losing
ten pounds, says Cardinal. Theres always something to celebrate.
In addition to providing Lakeway residents with memorable gifts and a
one-stop shopping experience, Cardinal is committed to giving back to the
community and holds multiple fundraising events at her store each year
to support local causes. She is a member of the Womens Club of Greater
Lakeway and the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce. Cardinal was the
recipient of the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year
Award in 2009 and also received the organizations Citizen of the Year
Award in 2011.
When not at work, Cardinal enjoys spending time with her husband, Tim,
and their 7-month-old daughter, Piper James.

Run with Joy

STORY AND PHOTO BY ELIZABETH McGUIRE

OR MONTHS MY10 year-old son and I had been battling

too much. Nothing dramatic, just a steady, exhausting cycle of
nagging/ignoring, cajoling/sighing, yelling/yelling, then crying/
crying. There were all the predictable triggers: homework, chores, screen
time. Every day I practiced complaining about dirty shoes on the sofa and
Minecraft on the computer, and he practiced scowling and stomping. We
both got really good at being disgusted with one another.
The small stand-offs became almost daily routines and I soon realized
that no matter the outcome of each argument I felt like I was losing every
single time. First I was furious, then heartbroken.
Things were not always this difficult between us. In fact, from the very
beginning our relationship was a breeze. I grew up with only brothers so
I like to think I understand boy energy and humor. Personality-wise, my
son and I have much in common. We are happiest outside, no matter the
weather. Every day we require ample time to move and sweat and DO, balanced with ample time to just sit and dream. We are really good at leaping
before looking, then getting frustrated at our impulsiveness and backpedaling into a plan. We are both playaholics more than workaholics.
But none of these similarities were helping us much, and I missed the
easy connection we had always shared.
So one night, after a particularly ugly argument over homework, I
approached him in his room. I would really like to find something fun for
us to do regularlyjust you and me. My voice caught and tears brimmed.
He replied, Dont worry, Mom. Im not going to college yet.
I laughedat both his wisdom and naivet. I was not worried about college. I was worried only about that particular day, and the next day, and
maybe the next, but no further. I was worried about the current heaviness
between us. I was not looking for a cure-all for the battles or some lofty

psychological insight into why mothers and sons fight at this stage. I was
simply looking for a way to inject more easy, light moments into our days.
He suggested we run. We had run together before and casually finished
some 5K races, but we had never made it a regular habit. He had never
before shown interest in consistent training and I was, to be honest, a little
protective of my own running schedule.
Running had been my sanctuary for almost two decades and I was
accustomed to escaping family life five times a week to meet a steady group
of friends and training partners. I wasnt sure how I would add another
layer to this carefully orchestrated routine, but I knew it was worth trying.
So thenext Saturdaymorning, I met my friends at our usual predawn
hour. I finished our 7-mile loop and while the rest of them kept going, I ran
home to meet my boy. He was still in his pajamas, on the computer, and
had not seen my reminder note. It was 29 degrees, there was hot coffee in
the kitchen, and I was starting to chill in my sweaty clothes. I nearly ditched
the whole idea. But as soon as I asked, Hey bud, still want to run a few with
me? he jumped up with a cheerfulYes!
The next 30 minutes were pure joy. Following his lead, we launched
into adventure runninghalf running, half exploring our neighborhood
and nearby trail. My boy zigzagged along the sidewalks, tightrope-walked
every curb he found, jumped over rock walls and benches, and paused
when he saw an interesting tree or funny graffiti. For every mile I ran, he
seemed to run a quarter more with his diversions.
He chattered about ideas for his latest cartoon series, and asked me
lots of ridiculousWhat Ifquestions. Even though weve passionately
covered the topic before, we spent at least a mile discussing why Super
Speed is obviously the best superpower ever.Even better than flying and
invisibility,we agreed.
Along the way we vowed to register for an upcoming
race where volunteers enthusiastically douse runners with
colored powdered until they look like toxic circus clowns.
After last years race, we were blowing blue gunk out of our
noses for days, so we decided this year to wear bandanas for
protection. We will be the Booger Bandana Brigade, Mom!
We will have a booger mascot! I can make us a booger logo
and everything!
And it was in the middle of this boogery monologue that
I had the distinct and intoxicating feeling that this moment
was exactly what we needed. There was lightness and laughter between us again.Welcome to your new Saturday morning routine,I thought.I am totally in.
A month later, our regular runs have not solved everything, of course, but the constant heaviness is gone. Knowing
that once a week I am guaranteed time with him that is void
of arguing and frustration somehow gives me more patience
and empathy on the other days.
We have found a simple space that contains only joy and
ease, and nothing could keep me from showing up there. I
could run for miles in it.

FOR THE UNRAVELING OF MERCY LOUIS
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

OTTIE AND MARTINStevenson spent nearly two decades in New Orleans, a place all three of
their children call home. So Dottie and her daughter Brooke, both of whom now live in Lakeway
were excited to learn that Keija Parssinens second novel, THE UNRAVELING OF MERCY LOUIS,
is set in swampy Southeast Texas and steeped in Cajun culture. Their enthusiasm prompted a generous invitation for about sixty of their friends to gather at the beautiful Stevenson home on a morning in March in
order to celebrate Keija, a 1999 Lake Travis High School graduate. Brooke and Dottie cooked for two days
and created a feast of shrimp and grits, jambalaya, homemade pralines, and other New Orleans culinary
treasures, including some extra spicy Bloody Marys! Keija read an excerpt of the novel, which the New York
Times calls urgent, deliciously dark and sumptuously gothic, and then fielded questions from party-goers,
fondly recalling her excellent education in the Lake Travis schools. BookPeople sold copies of the novel on
site. Though you might have missed the mimosas that morning, you can still purchase a copy of the critically
acclaimed book about the downfall of a small towns golden girl at Barnes & Noble Bee Cave, BookPeople, or
online wherever books are sold.

Veteran Rebekah Williston with Sweetie

V.E.T.S.: A Story of Hope and Healing

STORY BY MONALISA SAENZ | PHOTOS BY PATTI PIESZCHALA

N A WARMspring day, Rebekah Williston is enjoying an

afternoon outdoors on a ranch in Spicewood, surrounded
by several horses and a goat. Dressed in a
T-shirt, jeans and cowboy boots, she seems right at
home, with her beloved six-year-old horse, Sweetie,
at her side. Williston is a member of Veterans Equine
Training Services (V.E.T.S.), a unique program dedicated to pairing veterans and rescued horses.
Founded in 2012 by Scott White, V.E.T.S. is a nonprofit organization that brings veterans, many of whom
suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
together with rescued horses in an effort to promote
healing and growth for all. White, who is president of
V.E.T.S. has been involved in equine therapy since he and
his wife, Genee, were introduced to the concept in 2004.
An experience working with a veteran who was suffering from both mental and physical ailments led White to
conceptualize a horse-training program created specifically for those who
have served in the military. Today, White and his team run two Saturday
classes, free to participating veterans, at the Spicewood ranch.
Shes mad because I didnt bring apples today, Williston explains as
Sweetie, a chestnut-colored mare, nudges her gently during our interview.
OK, Ill bring two tomorrow! Sporting a smile that rarely breaks, it is hard
to imagine that Williston has ever suffered a day struggling with PTSD.
Born and raised in Tennessee, Williston joined the Air Force, married
and relocated to Washington State, where she joined the National Guard.
In 2011, after serving four and a half years in the National Guard, she was
medically discharged for PTSD. She acknowledges that both abuse from

her pre-military past and a sexual assault that occurred while in the Air
Force triggered her condition. According to Williston, frustration over the
lack of care and options available to her culminated
in a suicide attempt (one of several), and prompted
a move to Texas where her veteran brother lives.
Thankfully, Willistons situation did improve, but she
was still plagued by days when she did not want to
leave her house.
Williston found information about V.E.T.S. online
and experienced an instant feeling of camaraderie
after attending one of the organizations community
outreach events in Dripping Springs. She has completed V.E.T.S. 12-week program three times (participants can go through the program as many times
as they like) and decided to adopt her own horse
earlier this year. Willistons mare, Sweetie, lives on
the ranch and was adopted from Bluebonnet Equine
Humane Society. Prior to her rescue, Sweetie weighed 500 pounds about half the normal weight for a horse her age.
Williston, a mother of two, describes her time with Sweetie as part of
her safety plan, and she often drives twice a day from her Lake Travis
area home to visit her horse. Willistons lighthearted demeanor turns serious when she speaks of how V.E.T.S. both saved and changed her life.
Williston wants to acquire another rescued horse. When asked about
the added responsibility, Willistons response echoed the compassion that
is at the core of the V.E.T.S. program: I could be the person to let that
horse know that, hey, you are loved and cared for.
