Introduction

Stomach problems and any other issues related to digestion can be quite hassling
especially it if ends up interfering with your everyday tasks. This kind of condition is no
joke and it probably deserves a whole lot of looking into. This is a time when seeking
out medical attention is not merely an option, but rather, it becomes a must. Whether it
was the result of complications or a bad lifestyle, this is not something that you can just
overlook, especially since when it comes to health, there is no compromise involved.
One of the most common conditions that most Americans are afflicted with is
Gastroparesis. Due to several circumstances and unhealthy lifestyle choices, there is a
huge number among the population that is diagnosed with this. In simple terms, it is a
nerve disorder in which the stomach is unable to digest food properly. When this
happens, signs will also be evident physically because there will be a lot of outwards
signs like vomiting and nausea that will be involved. This situation is not really a good
one since it will seem like you are not actually eating anything because the stomach is
unable to digest properly.
This e-book is a self-help guide to overcoming and preventing Gastroparesis. What can
you do to avoid the condition? Well, this book will explain the benefits of natural
solutions rather than having to resort to the usual chemical medications. Everyone
knows that too many chemicals can actually do more harm than good because of the
complications that they bring with. This subject will be thoroughly touched here, while
also bringing to light alternative treatments.

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

This kind of solutions are quite unconventional because they dont not rely on the drug
prescriptions of doctors alone. Natural home remedies are also presented for whole
new way to look regarding the treatment of Gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis and Its Life Changing Issues

What Is Gastroparesis?

From the prefix gastro, one can immediately assume that this condition has
something to do with digestions and other similar processes. Therefore, it can also be
said that anyone who is diagnosed with this cannot take the condition lightly. There are
a whole lot of complications that can arise when ailments involved with digestion is
mentioned and this one is definitely no exception.

So what is Gastroparesis? Well, this medical condition is a term used to describe the
inefficient ability of the stomach to digest. Due to some nerve damage for various
possible reasons, the stomach will not be able to do its job properly and this is the
reason why this condition is more hassling than any other.

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

The movement of the stomach for the digestion of the foods is usually done with the
purpose to contract muscles in the stomach, but for those with Gastroparesis, the
stomach is not able to do this task. This is the reason why common foods are not able to
break down normally. Thus, the emptying of the stomach is delayed. In short, its
processing will be sluggish and unproductive because the food stays there for a longer
time and this results in various physical troubles as well. Basically, it comes down to the
fact that the food you eat is not digested properly; this causes various types of trouble
for people who are diagnosed with this condition.

The most common symptoms of this condition are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
and even low energy levels. These things can greatly interfere with anyones day to day
routines since the quality of work is affected in so many ways. A person will not be able
to function properly in terms of breaking down food contents that are taken into the
body.

All of these symptoms are ones that you need to deal with efficiently. There are various
ways in which you can diagnose Gastroparesis and as early as then, you can already
make your way through keeping a healthy lifestyle. Take note that there are a lot of
people who get diagnosed because of so many unhealthy practices. The stomach
eventually breaks down and this causes a whole flurry of complications that interfere
with the normally efficient digestive process. Toxins and waste materials are not
efficiently rid of and this is a very bad situation to be in, especially since digestion is one
of the major processes of the body that have to be managed right.

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

How Does This Affect Your General Health?

When the digestive process is interrupted, it will only be safe to assume that the overall
performance of the body will be hurt as well. After all, this main process is the same one
that powers up the whole system. This is where nutrient absorption and energy levels
are honed so without the proper digestion taking place, there will be a whole lot of
problems to face in this regard.

What will happen when you are faced with such a condition? Most people end up
malnourished because they throw up the food that they ate. Food that is not digested
causes problems because it is considered as waste. No one is capable of storing too
much waste in the body and this causes various conflicts to arise especially with the
necessary processes that are happening like digestion. You have to be particular about
this because although it may seem minor when you think about it, experiencing such
things is a whole new page in the book. You cannot just assume that your body will be
alright amidst this assault and inefficiency.

Just think about the concept of waste management. People all around the world
produce tons upon tons of waste products every day and without the help from
collectors and organizations that take them and break them down, anyones abode will
probably end up as a wasteland that contains mountains of waste. The same logic can
be applied to the process of digestion.

10

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

This is something that a body needs to be stable. Food that is taken in needs to be
broken down efficiently so that it can also be absorbed and taken in as nutrients for the
body. Just imagine if the stomach is unable to do so. These waste products will be
retained in your stomach and the body considers this as an abnormality and a danger,
which is why the condition induces vomiting and nausea.

These outwards signs can also be detrimental not only to your bodily condition but also
to the people who you interact with every day. Just imagine doing your work and
suddenly you are not able to do so because you feel nauseous. It will definitely affect
the quality of the work that you do and you have to be very careful about this since it is
not something that can be ignored.

Why Is Gastroparesis Changing Your Life?

This condition is a life changer in many ways. It definitely falls into the category of
troubling ailments because its not something that can be ignored. A whole lot of
complications can arise in the most untimely moments and this greatly affects the
ability of the person to function well in society. There is a whole lot more to consider for
the treatments, but when one is diagnosed, there is always that need to be cautious with
everything.

Another common problem that most people experience is the ultimate change in diet.
Most people are quite fond of letting it go and splurging when it comes to their food
choices and this is the main cause as to why conditions like this come about. It is the
neglect on the part of the person that causes the stomach to stop working functionally.
11

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Those with Gastroparesis cannot just eat anything anymore. The diet needs to be strictly
regulated and you will have to watch out for the contents of the food that you eat. This
process is no joke since extreme measures will be required and diet plans will also need
to be set up so that you can help your body with digestion while ensuring that you do
not upset the process. Indeed, this is one of the biggest adjustments that people undergo
when it comes to their lifestyle change from Gastroparesis.

Remember that when the stomach or any internal organ breaks down, it cannot be
returned to its prime state. There are a whole lot of complications and maintenance
procedures that you will need to undertake before everything goes back to working
order. However, this is also not a guarantee of being able to see through the best
condition of the whole thing. In other words, your stomach might not be the same again
when it comes to digesting food and you will need to adjust to its current state.

How Many People Suffer From Gastroparesis In The U.S?

The U.S. is one of the biggest and most prosperous nations in the world, but did you
know that a lot of citizens also suffer from Gastroparesis? Living the American dream is
not as glamorous as it sounds for these people. The country is indeed riddled with so
many food establishments but in the midst of commercialization, a lot of them do not
really hold nutrition in high regard, and this is why a lot of Americans are inflicted with
complications from an unhealthy lifestyle.

12

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Gastroparesis is the result of various conditions that eventually take root and in the
process, disrupts digestion. It is not something that is caught instantaneously, but
rather, it is the result of the buildup of bad habits and Americans in particular have the
tendency to succumb to such habits. Its one of the most problematic lifestyle choices
that anyone could bear with.

Although a whole lot of the population is making their voice known when it comes to a
lifestyle change, there is still a portion that does not see the benefit of such.
Gastroparesis is an ailment that sneaks up on you and this is something that you should
be concerned about because it affects the whole bodys welfare and also the way that
you live your life.

How Is It Diagnosed?
Barium X-Ray
This method will require the patient to fast for a total of 12 hours and after that, the
patient will be given a thickened liquid solution that contains barium as an ingredient.
Since this element is a major component that covers the inside parts of the stomach, it
will be easy to see in the X-ray.

The fasting part will be able to determine whether the stomach is digesting properly.
For normal persons, the digestion process would have already been completed after 12
hours and it will show an empty stomach in the X-ray. If some food contents still appear
then it is likely that there is some delay with the digestive process and stomach

13

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

emptying. This test though is not really very accurate since there are cases in which the
problem is not diagnosed accordingly because of some circumstances with digestion.

Gastric Scintigraphy

This method basically makes use of a criterion for being able to determine and diagnose
Gastroparesis in a person. A scintigraphic gastric emptying study, usually abbreviated
as GES, has a standard that will need to be followed. By studying the behavior of the
stomach for a time period after ingesting some food, the doctors and other medical
professionals will be able to determine various cases of abnormalities with the
movement of the organ.

The retention of the meal taken can be identified and this quantity is observed as to
whether this particular rate is normal or not. This data will be responsible for the
diagnosis of Gastroparesis in most cases. When the stomach still has a lot of contents
after several hours of eating, then there might be some delay that is happening with
stomach emptying and can be the start of an accurate diagnosis for this condition.

Gastric Manometry
This method is something that will involve the use of a catheter. This equipment will be
inserted via the peroral region and for six hours, theantro-deuodeno-jejunal pressures
will be observed for the rate of food break down in the stomach. These pressure
recordings will see whether the person has Gastroparesis or not. After taking a solid
meal, this process can begin and the testing process can be efficiently done too.

14

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

In a way, the contractions and variations in the pressure readings are the ultimate
readings that you will need in order to ensure that the stomach is properly doing its job
of breaking down the food materials that go into it. This process is by far a good way to
ensure that accurate readings are taken and that the diagnosis is right on.

Electrogastrography
Similar to how manometry works, this method makes use of the electrical activity in the
stomach after a solid meal is taken. However, unlike the former process, this one is not
invasive at all. It is done from the surface of the skin so any worry about complications
and pain during the diagnostic process can be forgotten in lieu of this favorable proves.

Generally, the stomach is divided into two categories. The first is the electrical control
activity, ECA, which contains a whole lot of recurring electrical activity that is quite
involuntary. On the other hand, the second one, the electrical response activity, ERA, is
responsible for giving off signals about the contractions that are happening. This is the
one being monitored since the whole process generally focuses on the movement of the
stomach when breaking down food particles that are eaten.

Smart Pill
This method makes use of the latest technology to determine whether the person has a
case of Gastroparesis. It makes use of an electronic device that is small enough to be in
capsule form, as the name suggests. However, since this particular technology is quite
new to the market, it is not available all diagnostic centers but rather only in specialized
ones.

15

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

This small pill is swallowed and the images will be seen and read by a radiologist as
it moves down to the digestive tract. The information will be sent wirelessly so you
basically get an idea of the journey of the food that you eat and what happens to it. The
information will be received by another electronic device that is situated in the waist
area of the patient.

What Causes Gastroparesis?

One of the main causes of Gastroparesis is an unhealthy eating lifestyle. Take note that
your diet is very important in keeping everything in the right order and if you are
someone who does not have any regard for this aspect, you will most likely fall victim
to the woes of Gastroparesis and its many complications.

Aside from this bad lifestyle, this condition can also result from a complication from
various diseases like diabetes, nervous system ailments and the overuse and eventual
tolerance from certain prescription drugs. As you can see, there is a reason why this
happens and it is not something that can simply be contracted from one singular
instance. It is an eventual result of bad habits pulled together in which the processing of
the stomach is greatly hindered in the long run.

In some cases, there have been situations wherein the condition simply appeared. For
these, it was associated with viral infections that could have aided in the deteriorating
in the stomach and its digestion.

16

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

No matter what the cause may be, one thing to remember above all is that Gastroparesis
is not something that can be taken in an instant. In other words, its something that
creeps up on everyone who is afflicted with it. The stomach might be good at its job of
breaking down food but much like other things, it also has its limits. This is the reason
why you should take care of it as well as you can. As they say, prevention is always
better than cure and when it comes to conditions like this, it has never rung more true.

17

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Why Choosing Traditional Methods is Not the Best Solution

Drugs Used For Gastroparesis and Nausea, Vomiting and Abdominal Pain
One of the bodys goals is to fully satisfy the complete metabolism of the whole body
system and part of this is through the proper digestion of ingested foods in the body.
Structures, nerves, muscles and chemicals involved in the digestive system must
function in coordination to achieve this goal. Failure to function in any of these can
cause disorders like Gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis is due to poorly functioning of the muscles and nerves that are
responsible for the contraction of the stomach that aid in the digestion of foods. This
causes a failure to digest efficient nutrients and a delay in the emptying of foods into
the small intestine where they are broken down and ground into smaller pieces.
Symptoms include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, fluctuations in blood glucose, weight
loss, bloating of tummy and loss of appetite.

With this in mind, drugs are developed to strengthen weakened muscles of the stomach
in order to aid the digestion of foods. They increase the muscle contractions of the lower
esophagus and the lower esophagus sphincter which is located between the esophagus
and the stomach. The lower esophagus sphincter is responsible for the regulation and
control of acid reflux thus preventing it from the reflux of acid and other stomach
contents into the esophagus. This structure is very vital because weak contractions of

18

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

this structure will cause motility disorders or can deeply worsen the condition of a
person with gastrointestinal defects or problems.

These drugs are called prokinetic drugs or promotility drugs and they enhance the
ability of the stomach to normally empty itself and to strengthen muscles and other
structures of the stomach to digest foods properly. However, these are products that
may be risky to the human body as they can all cause a number of impacts that will
result in many side effects. These are drugs that cannot be used unless other non-drugbased processes to take care of your problem are tried first.

Metoclopramide (Reglan)
Metoclopramide (Reglan) stimulates the rapid emptying of the stomach and decreases
the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus. This also prevents nausea by interacting
with the dopamine receptors in the brain, thus treating nausea. Dopamine receptors are
one of the substances that are responsible for the bodys need to vomit (nausea).
Metoclopramide can also treat Gastroparesis in response to increased levels of glucose
in the body (diabetes). This condition causes damage to the nerves that affect the
emptying of foods into the small intestine.

Since metoclopramide accelerates or speeds up the emptying of the stomach, it can

greatly increase or decrease the absorption of substances that can be absorbed in the
small intestine. Effects of substances such as diazepam, alcohol, cyclosporine can be
intensified and increased when ingested together with metoclopramide. On the other
hand,

metoclopramide

can

decrease

the

concentrations

of digoxin (Lanoxin)

and cimetidine (Tagamet) which are all needed in the medication for cardiac disorders.
19

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Metoclopramide should not be used in patients taking drugs like isocarboxazid

(Marplan),

phenelzine

(Nardil),

tranylcypromine

(Parnate), selegiline (Eldepryl),

and procarbazine (Matulane) which could give adverse effects due to excess
neurotransmitters released.

Doperinode
Domperidone prevents the symptoms manifested by Gastroparesis by rapidly helping
the digestive system to empty itself from the foods ingested. Side effects such as
dizziness and headache may occur most especially if its the patients first time to take
the medicine. This happens when the body is adjusting itself to the effects of the
medicine. Irritability, swelling of the legs, leg cramps, chest pain, swelling of the breasts
plus discharges from the nipples of men and women, menstrual changes and a
difficulty in breathing have been reported as the drugs side effects as well.

Prochlorperazine (Compazine)
Prochlorperazine is used to treat patients with severe nausea and vomiting. Side effects
include drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, constipation, dry
mouth, fever, itchiness or presence of rashes.

Promethazine (Phenergan)
Promethazine is used to treat anti-emetic which is also known as anti-nausea, one of the
symptoms of Gastroparesis. However, this drug should not be taken together with other
antidepressant drugs due to the increased risk of uncontrolled movement disorders.
Side effects of this drug include drowsiness because this drug is known to be a sedative
drug.
20

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Serotonin Antagonists
Serotonin antagonists are known to block the chemical Serotonin in the brain and
stomach. These drugs are used to relieve nausea and vomiting. However, side effects
include diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, muscle cramps and nervousness.

Anticholinergic Drugs
Anticholinergic drugs relieve cramping of the stomach muscles and slows acid
secretion. Side effects of this drug include dizziness, flushing of the face, headache,
constipation, dry mouth, itchiness and presence of rashes in the body.

Aprepitant
Aprepitant is used to block the natural chemical in the body that is responsible for the
vomiting and feeling of nausea by the patient. Side effects of this drug include severe
dizziness, tiredness and hiccups, itching and swelling of the face and tongue and
difficulty in breathing.

Drugs Used For Gastroparesis And The Drugs Used For The Stimulation Of
The Muscles Activity

Cisapride (Propulsid)
Just like Metoclopramide, Cisapride helps strengthen the muscles responsible for the
contraction of the stomach upon digesting of foods. This drug helps decrease the
stomach acid reflux, thus preventing the urge to vomit in any particular time. This drug
also hastens the emptying of the foods ingested into the small intestines just like
21

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Metoclopramide. This drug when taken together with other sedatives such as
Diazepam, alcohol, etc. will cause increased absorption of the drugs since Cisapride
hastens stomach emptying which disrupts the absorption of other substances. Side
effects also include headache, diarrhea, nausea and constipation. However, no matter
how manageable and helpful this drug is, the Food and Drug Administration has issued
a release of statement regarding Cisapride. According to FDA, cisapride is known to
have caused cardiac arrhythmias in patients taking this drug. Patients who are in dire
need of taking this drug must consult with their doctors first.

Domperidone
This drug is used to help the contractions of the muscles in the stomach so that foods
ingested will easily and rapidly be emptied into the small intestines. Side effects of this
drug include irritability, swelling of the legs, leg cramps, chest pain, swelling of the
breasts and discharges from the nipples of men and women, menstrual changes and
difficulty in breathing have been reported as the drugs side effects as well.

Metoclopramide (Reglan)
This drug is used to help the muscles in the stomach to empty itself from the ingested
foods into the small intestines. Side effects include adverse reactions when taken
together with sedatives and other antidepressant drugs.

Erythromycin (E-Mycin, Ilosone)

Erythromycin is an antibiotic known for its prokinetic effects. In lower doses compared
to its usual treatment to bacterial infections, erythromycin is capable of stimulating the
contractions of the muscles in the stomach which could help in digestion of foods and
22

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

emptying of the stomach into the small intestines. Diarrhea is the side effect of this drug
thats why patients reported with watery stool or diarrheic stool specimens should
immediately relay this to the doctor and the patient may be advised to discontinue the
use of the drugs. Continuous usage of the drug may cause another infection especially if
the patient has exhibited diarrhea tendencies.

Surgery Risk and Efficiency

One of the options that you can turn to for treatments for Gastroparesis is surgery. This
method is probably the best option for those people who are afflicted with extreme
cases of this condition. After all, it is no joke when your stomach is no longer able to
digest the food that you eat. This does not only impede one process, but it will cause a
whole lot more trouble, both internally and physically, because the body will not receive
various nutrients that it is due.

But how good is surgery as a viable option? Will you really be treated after it is
finished? Well, in this regard, yes, surgery will probably help your stomach in various
ways. It is indeed one of the better options to consider if you are not really into the idea
of a whole lifestyle change. But amidst this idea, there is also the problem of
complications that might arise. That and the price might turn out to be insanely
expensive.

Everyone knows that surgical procedures are no walk in the park. It is not generally
advised unless it becomes necessary and this mindset is what you should keep in mind
before committing to a surgical procedure for Gastroparesis. The efficiency might be
23

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

good when it comes to going over the outlook and possible effects of the surgery but
make sure that you also consider the right doctor and hospital for the job. They will be
performing the surgery after all, and it is imperative to be very careful with your choice.

Aside from this, there is also the problem of complications. Basically, you will be cut
open for this and your organs will be tinkered with. If that does not discourage you
enough, then there is the post-surgical situation to think about. You will be required to
rest for a long period of time before you can resume normal activities, and several
medications might also become a part of your life at that time in order to help your
body heal.

Either way, it comes down to the fact that surgery will be ultimately dependent on the
person who will be undergoing it. They need consent and considering various risk
factors and the efficiency of the whole procedure, it is only right that they have the final
say in all of it.

What to Do: Some Simple Tips to Help Digestion

More Meals
This kind of system is probably misunderstood a lot of ways. There are some people
who starve themselves with the intention of eating less every day and they limit their
food intake to two times. Believe it or not though, this does more harm than good for
people who practice it. Problems with digestion can arise because suddenly eating
much when you are starving can cause disruptions in the stomach.

Eating six small meals a day can help you to avoid such a problem. Although the
frequency might be more, the small dosages of food taken in during these times will be
quite helpful in helping digestion along since everything can be processed easily
compared to bigger portions that are usually taken.
25

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Drink Non-Carbonated Liquids with Each Meal

Although it is common knowledge that liquids are easily digested than solids, this does
not mean that you can take any types of liquids or drinks with any meal. In fact, if you
are aiming for better digestion, your best choice would be to resort for non-carbonated
drinks. Instead of the usual soda, juice, tea, or coffee, you can look for alternatives
instead.

People with Gastroparesis can help compensate for these liquids for every meal by
seeking out other alternatives. Together with water, you can make use of soups,
smoothies and other healthy drinks instead of going for the usual drinks. This not only
helps you out with digestion, but it also encourages a lot more absorption because these
liquids are already equipped with some needed nutrients that can be taken with food.

Chew More before Swallowing

Eating fast might save you more time, but it does not in any way, help with the
digestive process. Everyone knows that digestion and food processing in the body starts
in the mouth and if you are the type of person who just swallows immediately with not
much chewing, then you will find that there is some disadvantages involved with this.

Experts have always reiterated that chewing is essential in making sure that the food
that goes to your stomach does not do so in lumps. This may cause several problems.
Even manners and etiquette emphasize the importance of this tidbit.

26

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Taking the time to chew is not a waste of time, but rather, it is one of the necessary
processes that will help your body hasten digestion, food processing and nutrient
absorption.

Dont Lie Down After a Meal

You may be very tempted to do this since after eating, there is that tendency of being
sleepy. However, do fall into this bad habit. Take some time to move about to allow the
food you ate to be digested properly. Lying down immediately after eating may not
cause immediate complications, but over time, it can disrupt the bodys natural
digestion. Instead of the food going directly to your stomach, it might go back up and
there is a big probability that the person will experience heartburn and acid reflux.

It can also contribute to the disturbance of sleep patterns since discomforts can be felt
because of the food that was not digested properly in the process.

Those who are experiencing symptoms of Gastroparesis is especially prone to these

consequences so it is very important to make sure that your body is allowed to digest
first before laying down and resting. Do not lie down and sleep as long as you still feel
full. Youd be surprised at the changes that this habit can bring about.

Eat Soft, Well Cooked and Liquid Foods

Take note of the contents of your diet. Gastroparesis involves digestion problems and
you have to help yourself in the task of making sure that your body is able to adapt to it.
27

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Minding your food intake and planning out what to eat is very important for those who
are diagnosed with Gastroparesis. There is a whole spectrum of processing that
happens with food so that the body absorbs enough nutrients but for people with this
condition, they lack the ability for this.

In order to help digestion along, you should get into the habit of avoiding hard foods
and those that are high in fiber content. These types are harder to break down and
digest and your stomach will have to work double time to process them. This is
something that you need to avoid, especially if you are in the works for working
towards a better lifestyle that will help with your digestion.

Avoid Foods High In Fat

One of the most basic things to remember when dealing with Gastroparesis is that food
content is everything. If you were the type of person that did not mind about what goes
into the food you eat, then you will be in for a rude awakening if you are diagnosed
with this condition.

To sum it up, Gastroparesis is like a paralyzed or impaired stomach so you can say
goodbye to those fast food runs and other oily foods that are rich in fat because they
possess components that are quite hard to digest.

Fats that are present in most foods make it taste good, but they are quite unhealthy and
definitely not beneficial in any way. Take fried foods as an example, like fries, eggs and
everyones favorite chicken. Sure, they are quite adept at satisfying the taste buds, but
take note that they also contribute to the deterioration of your overall health.
28

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Just like how oil is not generally able to mix with other liquids, the same logic can be
used for foods that are rich in fat content. It will take time to digest them and a
paralyzed stomach cannot do much in this regard. In fact, it may as well make the organ
do some extra work and this cannot happen because the person will be able to feel the
harsh backlash of such habits.

Nutritional Tables: A Basis for Soft and Solid Foods

Below is a table that can be used as a basis and guide for choosing the right kinds of
food for people with Gastroparesis. It is essential to make use of them because despite
the harmless impressions of some foods, there are those that can thoroughly impede the
process of digestion. These tables help in accommodating users for choosing the
appropriate food choices.

One Day Diet

Those who are diagnosed with Gastroparesis have a lot of restrictions when it comes to
their diet and food options. However, there is also a classification of symptoms that
need to be known so that the right kind of food can be taken accordingly.

Stage 1
This stage is mainly composed of a liquid diet. The main aim of this is to help patients
avoid and overcome dehydration while ensuring that the body receives ample nutrients
and in the process. These liquids are digested easily and this helps the person with the
food processing that happens in the stomach. Motility will not be a problem with this
diet but it does pose a problem for those who aim to get many nutrients in the long
term. This diet is merely a temporary solution that should not be enforced for long.
32

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Stage 2
In contrast to the first stage, this one allows the patient to take in solid foods, albeit in
limited varieties. The chosen food has to consist of low residue and low fat content.
Also, the nutritional benefits should be considered while ensuring that the food is easily
digested as well. The fat content should only be limited to 40 grams every day.

Stage 3
This stage is by far the most important among the three. This diet consists of foods that
will help your body acclimate to Gastroparesis and control its long term effects. It
includes some food choices from Stage 2 but it will have a lot of high fiber foods
involved together will some fat. This combination stimulates a good digestive process
and will surely help in keeping your body free from the harsh complications and
symptoms of Gastroparesis. Fat content though, still has a limit of 50 grams every day.

Here is a meal plan to use for Stage 3 symptoms:

Breakfast
1 cup of non-whole-grain cereal or Cream of Wheat
One slice of white bread; it may be toasted if desired
1 tablespoon of peanut butter

Morning snack

33

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

4 to 6 ounces of skim milk

Half a fully peeled banana

Lunch
8 ounces of water or another nutritional drink; avoid having any water
cup of white grain pasta
1 tablespoon of skim cheese of any type
1 tablespoon peanut butter

Afternoon snack
cup of canned fruit without the skin
cup skim yogurt

Dinner
1 to 2 ounces grilled or boiled chicken or fish
cup peeled and cooked carrots without skin
-1 cup mashed potatoes with all skins removed

Evening Snack
1 cup of gelatin; go after a sugar-free option for the best results

This should provide you with about 1,600 calories and 10 grams of fiber on average and
more than enough protein to spare.

Make Use of One Magical Ingredient: Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera goes a long, long way back to a time when modern medicine was just a
dream. Traditional treatments were not done by means of chemicals back then, but
rather, with the help of herbs and plants that had specific benefits for the health of the
user. It gave way to the various alternatives that we know of now. One good example of
a plant that has established itself for wellness and treatments is Aloe Vera.

In Chinese medicine, this plant was considered as a Method of Harmony. In Japan, it

was considered as the royal plant and it was famous because it was the herb, turned
elixir, which samurais took for the purpose of embrocation. For the Sanskrit culture,
this plant was associated with women and how they are able to regenerate and
rejuvenate various conditions.

This plant is even considered to be the main ingredient for Swedish Bitters, a sort of
elixir that was a well-kept secret of a Swedish doctor that we will simply call Dr.
Yernest. This, together with other herbs and root extracts were mixed together in order
to create a solution that helped with the longevity without any bloodletting involved. It
helped rejuvenate the body inside. And from then on, this concoction brought about a
new hype because of how useful the plant really is.

Even ancient civilizations were not exempt from the benefits of this plant. Egyptians
regarded it as a beauty secret because of its regenerative properties while Ancient Greek
and Mesopotamian civilizations were using it to help for various treatments and
conditions.

Although there are a lot of listed benefits with the use of Aloe Vera as an ingredient, let
us focus on its relevance as an effective agent for digestion. Those people with
Gastroparesis can benefit greatly from this plant because it helps in keeping wellness all
over.

Take note that poor digestion is one of roots of poor health and it is related to a lot of
diseases. Aloe Vera is significant in this regard because it helps in cleansing and
rejuvenating the internal parts of the body.

It works by soothing and cleaning the digestive tract so it will definitely help with food
processing of the body. Another advantage of Aloe Vera is the fact that it is an
adaptogen. This means that it can be very helpful in regulating bowel movement.
Whether you are experiencing constipation or diarrhea, taking Aloe Vera internally is
probably your best chance for a remedy.

It also aids with acid reflux and detoxification because it lessens the amount of bacteria
that is usually present during the detoxification process.

Aloe Vera and Gastroparesis

As you know, this condition is a disorder that focuses on the inability of the stomach to
efficiently process the food that passes through it. For this reason, Aloe Vera presents
itself as a viable solution for helping out your body with the digestive process.

36

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

Taking Aloe Vera Internally

It can also be taken in many forms. There are herbal medicines with Aloe Vera as its
core and you can take them. Also, some foods will allow the herb to be integrated so
you can make use of some special recipes for this.

But amidst all these methods, the best way to take Aloe Vera internally is probably to
turn it into liquid form, or rather, by making it into juice, for easy consumption. You can
take the juice as sort of a maintenance supplement. Take two glasses every day, one
together with breakfast and another one with dinner. This habit will ensure that you are
starting and ending the day right.

So how do you make Aloe Vera juice?

First, you have to note down the ingredients that you will need in making the juice.

Aloe Vera leaves

Knife

One tablespoon of vinegar

One cup of water

Blender

Citrus Juice or any flavoring

Directions:
37

copy@diabetesprotocol.com 2014

1. You will need fresh leaves from the Aloe Vera plant.
2. After you have prepare the, you can use the knife to peel the outer
rinds of the leaves. This is the green cover that encases the gel
inside so you have to be careful about the peeling so as not to use
up and mess up the gel.
3. When the outer rinds are all taken care of, the next thing you do is
to take off the outer layer of the gel. This is the yellow layer. If you
are not too keen about taking off this layer using the knife, you
have the option of making use of the vinegar and water mixture to
rinse it off.
4. Once the peeling of the rinds and the first layers are taken away, the
gel that is left behind is the one that will be usable for the juice. Peel
enough leaves until you have enough gel that can fit in two
tablespoons.
5. After this step, you can then proceed to the making of the juice
itself. Place the collected Aloe Vera gel into the blender.
6. You may add the different flavorings or any citrus based juice of
your preference to the blender to enhance the juice.
7. Blend accordingly until the consistency is to your liking.
