CHAPTER#1

Introduction

Introduction
Borrowing books, returning books or viewing the available books at the
Library of the local Universities currently done manually where in the
student has go to the Library and check the available books at the
Library. .Students check the list of books available and borrow the books if
the book is a borrow otherwise it is of waste for the student to come to the
library to come to check for the books if the student doesnt get the book.
The objective of this Bachelor thesis is to develop a web-based library
management system based on (Html, Css, PHP, MySQL) in order to
reduce the cost of management and make it convenient for the user. This
system used by members who may be students or professors of this
University to check the availability of the books and borrow the books, and
by the librarian to update the databases.

PRESENT MANUAL SYSTEM


Offline or manual library management Is not easy to implement in
manual library management system there is too much paper work

this paper work takes too much time and can be damaged easily
and there is no back up record there is also database desktop
applications are available that application needs special
requirements and also desktop application can also be very easily
damaged by virus.

Problem of the present system


Some of other problems being faced in manual system are as
Follows:
Fast report generation is not possible.
Tracing a book is difficult.
Information about issue/return of the books are not properly
maintained.
No central database can be created as information is not
available in database.

PROPOSED SYSTEM
The following are the five module which we can use in the online
library management system.

1. Acquisition
2. Circulation
3. Opac()
4. Cataloge
5. Serial management
ACQUISITIONS
Ordering ,receiving ,claiming material from suppliers and return and
cancelation of material.

CIRCULATION

Lending, Return, Renewal and can also find location of books user
information fine of overdue and lost books.

OPAC
Public user can search and display books detail and location.OPAC can be link
to circulation module where user can check status of book he/she lends
return fine of overdue books.

SERIAL MANAGEMENT
Serial management manages journals, magazines etc, and keep all books
records serial wise.

Proposed system provides with following solutions :


1. It provides "better and efficient" service to members.
2. Reduce the workload of employee.
3. Faster retrieval of information about the desired book.
4. Provide facility for proper monitoring reduce paper work and
provide data security.
5. All details will be available on a click.

1) Purpose:The purpose of this application are as follows :


The software is for automation of library.
It provides following facilities to
Admin :
Can read and write information about any member.
Can update, create, delete the record of membership as per
requirement .
Can enter details related to a particular book.
Can provide membership to members.
Member:
Member can check the status of books and his
account.
Member can search particular book.

The different areas where we can use this application are :
Any education institute can make use of it for providing
information about author, content of the available books .

5.) Assumptions
This application is used to convert the manual System to the
online application.
Customized data will be used in this application.
User does not have right to enter information about books.
5.) Overview :
The LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM software has the
ability to display the details of the books available in
various departments, the transactions of books and
about the book holders. It enables online reservation
of books
Project is related to library management which provides reading
services to its members. Any person can become a member of
the library by filling a prescribed form.

They can get the book issued, so that they can take homeand
return them.

6.) Functionality :
Online membership.
Keeps the track of issues and submission of books .
Alerts
The system can alert the Librarian or the administrator in case of any problems.

Usability
The system shall allow the users to access the system from the Internet using HTML or
its
derivative technologies. The system uses a web browser as an interface. Since all users are
familiar with the general usage of browsers, no specific training is required.

Assumptions and dependencies


The users have sufficient knowledge of computers.
The University computer should have Internet connection and Internet
server capabilities.

The users know the English language, as the user interface will be provided
in English

The product can access the university student database.

Reliability
The system has to be very reliable due to the
importance of data and the damages incorrect
orincomplete data can do.

Availability

The system is available 100% for the user and is used 24


hours a day and 365 days a year. The systemshall be
operational 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Feasibility Study
In feasibility study phase we had undergone through various
steps which are describe as under :
1. Identify the origin of the information at different stages.
2. Identify the expectation of user from computerized system.
3. Analyze the draw back of existing system (manual) system.
