System Structure

1.

System Structure

This chapter explains the structure and functions of Chroma DC Power Supply 62000B
Series Soft Panel application. The supported instruments and communication protocols
with PC are listed below for users to identify the required environment easily.

1.1

Introduction

This software is applicable to Chroma DC Power Supply 62000B Series instruments only.
The remote transmission between PC and DC Power Supply must be active before using the
software in order to communicate by commands.
The software application can control 30 sets of DC Power Supply that can work either
stand-alone, in parallel or series to monitor and control voltage as well as current. It can
also edit the output voltage and current to change as time goes by. In addition the software
is able to save the parameter settings so that users can open an existing file for execution
from hard disk easily.

1.2

Supported Hardware

Chroma 62000B Series DC Power Supplies support the follow models:

A.
B.

Mainframe (supported module: 62015B-15-90, 62015B-30-50, 62015B-60-25,

62015B-80-18 and 62015B-150-10.)
A620007 Control & Supervisor Unit (CSU in short.)
The Mainframe F/W version has to be higher than 1.40 while the CSU
F/W version has to be higher than 1.21. If there is any problem in using
Ethernet, please contact Chromas Application Engineer.

1.3

Communication Interface

There are two types of communication interfaces between PC and DC Power Supply.
A.
B.

CAN Bus (NI USB-8473 or ADLINK PCI-7841 interface card has to be installed on PC
site.)
Ethernet (TCP/IP communication protocol has to be installed on PC site.)

Site LAN, Private LAN

Site LAN means to connect the instrument that equipped with network function to
communicate with PC via Router, Hub and Switch. It is usually in large scale with central
network management function and DHCP or DNS like service.

Description:
a. When in Chroma 62000B Soft Panel, users need to define how many instruments to
be used and their communication protocol. Soft Panel is able to control up to 30
instruments at present.

Figure 3-2

b. The Model should be same as the instrument model no. or a warning will appear
when doing initialization. For instance, selecting MAINFRAME(15V) indicates to
control the MAINFRAME and use the power module 62015B-15-90.

c.

Users have to determine the communication protocol that is the transmission

command between PC and instrument. There are two types of protocol available
at present - CAN or Ethernet. Users need to ensure the network bandwidth to
avoid delay or error occurred in control timing when using Ethernet. When using
CAN, it is necessary to remove the CAN bus cable that is not controlled by
instrument as it may cause error during CAN broadcast.

Figure 3-4

Setting Interface

d. The communication interface parameter needs to be the same as one on instrument.

For instance, if the CAN Address on the instrument is set to 1 the CAN/Ethernet
Address on Soft Panel has to set to 1 as well. If Ethernet is in use, the CAN/
Ethernet Address should input the instruments IP Address.

Stand-Alone, Parallel & Series

Up to 30 sets of DC Power Supplies can be operated stand-alone, parallel or series. Figure

4-1 shows the legal Stand-alone, Parallel and Series setting. CH. is the short for channel.
Following are the restrictions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Only same model is allowed for Parallel and Series.

The group channel of Stand-alone, Parallel and Series cannot be the same.
The amount of Parallel in same group channel has to be larger than 1.
The amount of Series in same group channel has to be larger than 1.
The amount of Series has to be smaller than or equal to 3.
Ethernet does not support Parallel and Series.
The maximum output voltage of Series is 450 volt.
Different instrument may receive voltage/current command at different
timing through Ethernet and cause Parallel & Series instrument to occur
protection (OCP, OVP). There is no such problem through CAN
broadcast.

CH. Name Setting

It is used to set the channel name. Users can set an easy identified string for the channel
and it will map to the Output Name in other panels.

4.4

output. There are List and Step two editing modes. List mode is able to edit the voltage
waveforms that varied within specification and output them repeatedly; while Step mode can
edit the rising or falling waveform output with specific increment or decrement. It follows the
Sampling Time (ms) interval to draw the voltage, current and power readings curves
continuously when the unit outputs. It can also record the measured value into report. For

6.2

Since the measured value return time is longer when connecting to

multiple channels, users can get more accurate data via external
measurement instrument.
As the transmission gets longer when the Baud Rate set to low, the
Dwell or Seq. Time should not be too small and the amount of
channel should not be too much.

Report

Report On button controls the report generation. When Report ON is set, it starts to record
the data when any of the channels is Trigger ON. Data recording stops when all channels
are Trigger OFF. Click Browse to choose the path and filename. The report data
