Applied Partial Differential Equations. S.G. Sajjadi and T.A. Smith

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Co.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Laplace Transforms, Fourier transforms, solution of linear differential equations with variable
coefficients, Partial differential equations, including the wave equation, the heat equation,
Laplaces equation, Schrodinger equation, Nonlinear heat conduction, Bessel and Legendre
functions, and other related topics with applications in science and engineering.
Prerequisite: MA441

GOALS:
The course provides a basic foundation in the area of partial differential equations and
advanced mathematical methods. It serves as a required course for the Masters degree in
Aerospace Engineering curriculum.
Discipline Specific Learning Outcomes: Upon completion, students will be exposed to:
1. Boundary value problems and eigensystems.
2. Partial differential equations and their classifications.
3. Integral transforms for partial differential equations.
4. Complex contour integrations and residues.

5. Greens function for inhomogeneous differential equations.

6. Asymptotics and special functions.
7. Partial differential equations in various curvilinear coordinates.
8. Introduction to numerical solutions of partial differential equations (if time permits,
otherwise self study notes will be provided.)

Students are responsible to note the following policies
ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICIES:
Academic Integrity: EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University is committed to
maintaining and upholding intellectual integrity. The faculty, departments,
divisions, or campuses of the University may impose sanctions on students who

commit the following academic integrity violations: cheating, plagiarism, forgery

of transcripts, and other related acts. Sanctions may include a failing grade on
the assignment, a failing grade for the course, suspension, or dismissal from the
University. For the full text of the policy on academic
Department of Mathematics Calculator Policy:
On all tests, and common departmental final exams students will only be permitted to use
nongraphing calculators i.e. scientific calculators with a one line screen display that does
not have the capability of storing alpha-numeric data. Furthermore, no wireless
communication devices such as cell phones or PDAs will be allowed.
Attendance:
Students are responsible for everything that happens in class every day. If a class is missed,
the student is held responsible for finding out what was missed. Poor attendance may affect
your grade. Only official university excuses will be accepted.
Disability Support Services:
(i) "Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations
in this class are encouraged to contact the Office of Disability Services as soon as possible
to better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion." The student
must notify DSS of date and time of test once s/he has been made aware of test date.
(ii) All continuing disability students MUST submit to the professor the faculty notification
letter from the Office of Disability services during the first two weeks of the semester. In
addition, students MUST get the Testing Modification form for any exams and obtain the
professors signature by one week prior to date of exam.
