he much-awaited and
the controversial bill to
curb cyberbullying and
better support victims, passed
its third and final reading in
Parliament with overwhelming
cross-party support. Replacing
New Zealands bullying culture
with a culture that says it is not
ok to bully and intimidate other
people will not happen overnight
but this is an important step,
said MrDavid Rutherford, Chief
Human Rights Commissioner.
All New Zealanders need to
buy into changing our culture
of violence: but it wont happen
unless all of us buy into it.
Bullying isnt just happening on
the sidelines of sports games or in
classrooms: its 2015; we need to
address the bullies who torment
and bully others on social media
platforms and this law change is
a good start.

month of Ramadan is observed
by fasting from dawn to dusk
for 30 continuous days and then
celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr after the
sighting of the moon.
The glory of this month has
been visible in Auckland. As the
clock strikes 4 in the evening, the
footfall at the local groceries goes
up. Families get busy preparing
Iftar, the mosques see followers
towards 5 pm and at the call of
Adhaan (call for prayer) people
break their fast.
It is a wonderful view inside
the mosque when you see scores
of men sitting in a long line facing
each other and/or in small circular
groups and the food is served in
the centre. Some silently recite
the verses of Quran, some raise
their hands in Dua, some chat and
murmur with their friends sitting
beside them, while others serve
food to the visitors.
The virtue of Ramadan is
that it gets families, friends, and
strangers closer to each other
and God. Most of the mosques in

marks a milestone for
Southern District with Inspector
Tania Baron being the first
woman to step into the top road
policing role for the region.
Inspector Baron is a Dunedin
local and looks forward to the
challenge of leading the road
policing team across the district
to continue to improve safety on
our roads.
Our district has the largest
road network in the country
withthousands of kilometres of
highways, says Inspector Baron.
Every day our people are out
there ensuring our roads remain
safe by being visible, enforcing
the road rules, and educating
drivers on their behaviour.
My vision is for our roads to
be the safest in the country and
our team will take a strong stance
on unacceptable behaviour.
But we cannot do it alone.
We need the publics help
whether its stopping a drunk
driver getting behind the wheel,
reporting instances of dangerous
driver, or simply making sure you
plan your journey and drive fresh
so you reach your destination
safely road safety is the
responsibility of everyone.
Southern district commander,
Superintendent Andrew Coster,
says he delighted to have
Inspector Baron as part of the
district leadership team.
Tania has shown herself
to be an extremely competent
leader and manager, said
Superintendent Coster.
She
combines
solid
operational policing experience
and a strong strategic ability.
I am confident that, as the
road policing manager, Tania will
position Southern Police to have
the greatest possible impact on
road safety outcomes.
Inspector Baron has previously
held a range of roles in Dunedin,
including frontline policing,
youth, prosecutions and leading
case management across the
district.
