FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A Brief Report on the

Status of the Fire
Although I was not here
when arson struck the Santa
Sophia community on October 8, 2013, I have since
learned that the tragedy did not deter the peoples
spirit and love for this community. It rather brought
the community even closer. As your current pastor, I
want to take this opportunity to share with you the
progress of the renovation the parish undertook after
the fire. Eighteen months after this traumatic event,
we have finally closed out the claim with our insurance company. The total expenditures due to the fire
also include various upgrades that were not covered
in the claim.
The total expenditure of the fire restoration work
was $925,000. Our insurance paid a total of
$519,000, and the remaining amount of $406,000
was taken from the parish Fire Restoration Fund.
Our parish raised a total of $413,000 for the Fire
Restoration Fund; after using $406,000 to make the
necessary repairs, the remaining $7,000 was placed
in our Capital Improvement Fund.
During the fire restoration, there were a number of
upgrades that were made to improve our worship
space. These items included:
Installing an improved sound system. The
system now has improved amplification, delay
systems to minimize echo, and improved speakers for music from the choir loft.
SCRIPTURE READINGS

Date

Installing travertine flooring to replace the

carpeting in the sanctuary. This type of flooring
will last for many years and is lower maintenance than carpet.
Installing a new high altar. This new altar
provides a sacred area for the Tabernacle at the
front of the sanctuary.
The crucifix that is the focal point of our sanctuary was rebuilt in a different manner. As you all
may recall, the cross burned in the fire, but the
Corpus (Body of Christ) remained intact. The
refurbished cross is now anchored into the
ground with a steel girder.
Re-padding the kneelers and installing hydraulics on the kneelers.
Installing an improved fire alarm system. There
are now numerous smoke and heat detectors
throughout the church, including a laser across
the uppermost ceiling to detect smoke. Because
we were not required to completely rebuild the
church, we had the option of rewiring the alarms
to match the system prior to fire, but instead, we
installed a system that would meet todays more
stringent codes.
Installing security cameras.
Replacing the carpeting in the sacristy and
removal of the asbestos tile.
Remodeling of the alcoves and purchasing two
new statues.
Installing new and improved lighting.
continues on page three.

When I recently returned to the parish as your pastor, I was truly impressed to hear about your overwhelming support and your working together as a
community during the aftermath of the fire. I thank
you for the support you rendered to Father Jacob, and
your continuing support of the parish as various repairs and upgrades have been made. You all have
done a wonderful job completing and assisting with
the repairs; our beautiful new worship space and
church are a testament to your dedicated and concerted efforts. I also want to extend my personal thanks
to Father Jacob, the Fire Restoration Fund committee
members, and people of this great Parish community
for your generous support and continued spirit of
community throughout this trying time. May God
bless you, and I pray that the Lord may keep our

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests;
For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests
in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from
my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in
Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and
instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close
to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,
Amen

DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO

Bishop Robert W. McElroy's Statement on the
Supreme Court of the United States Ruling on
Same Sex Marriage ~ June 26, 2015
Today the United States Supreme Court ruled that
the historic definition of marriage as a relationship
between one man and one woman is unconstitutional.
The Catholic Church, along with other faith traditions, teaches that the nature of marriage and the
family cannot be redefined by society, as God is the
author of marriage and its corresponding gift of co
-creating human life. The legal recognition of marriage is not only about personal commitment but
also about the social commitment that husband and
wife make to the well-being of their children. It is
for this reason that it is important for government
to give a unique status to marriage between one
man and one woman both in law and in public
policy.
The Catholic community of San Diego and Imperial
counties will continue to honor and embody the
uniqueness of marriage between one man and one
woman as a gift from God in our teaching, our
sacramental life and our witness to the world. We
will do so in a manner which profoundly respects at
every moment the loving and familial relationships
which enrich the lives of so many gay men and
women who are our sons and daughters, our sisters
and brothers, and ultimately our fellow pilgrims on
this earthly journey of life. And commanded by the
Gospel of Jesus Christ we will continue to reach out
to families of every kind who are encountering poverty, addictions, violence, emotional stress or the
threat of deportation, and to attempt to bring them
faith and care, service and solidarity.

Learning About the Priesthood ~ On Saturday,

July 18th, 2015, the Diocese of San Diego is hosting
an Explorer Day for those men who are interested in
exploring a possible vocation to the priesthood. The day
will be held at St. Francis Center on the campus of the
University of San Diego from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm If
living a life of service for Christ and the people of God is
attractive to you, take advantage of the opportunity to
attend this upcoming Explorer Day. See our parish website for a video about Explorer Day.
Pick up an application at our parish office
or call Fr. Pedro Rivera the
St. Francis Center at (619) 291-7446.
