Architecture 2015
The Ashgate architecture list aims to bring you the most fascinating and innovative research on architecture and how it relates to
society, politics, culture and place. We are keen to include titles which turn the focus away from the Western world and you will
find several titles which focus on Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. The Architecture of Edwin Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew,
while contributing to this global vision, also adds to another strand we are particularly keen on expanding volumes which explore
womens role in designing space. We are pleased to be able to offer some major new works which revisit some seminal figures or
works from twentieth century design, including a full English translation and critical analysis of Bruno Tauts The City Crown and
an original study on Pevsners years at the BBC.
One of the most exciting new approaches to the study of architecture can be seen in our series, Design Research in Architecture,
in which the authors both practising architects and academics integrate original design work with cutting-edge theory to
create work which is both insightful, intellectually challenging and aesthetically stunning. No less ground-breaking, we have
several volumes which examine spatial theory as it relates to architecture, such as Urban Revolution Now, The Architecture
of the Illusive Distance, Phenomenologies of the City and The Material Imagination.
We are building up our list of titles on landscape architecture I am particularly excited about the forthcoming Pietro Porcinai and
the Landscape of Modern Italy and we are actively looking to expand this field of publications, as well as other areas in our list
such as interior architecture and conservation. The final volume of Practical Building Conservation: Earth, Brick and Terracotta,
will be published over the summer, completing this remarkable 10-volume set, which has become an essential reference to any
architect or academic working in architectural conservation.
I hope you find the titles on offer stimulating and enjoyable and that you will contact me should you wish to add your book to this
list. Please dont hesitate to contact me to discuss or send me your book proposals!
With best wishes,
Valerie Rose, Publisher

New Studies

Eugne-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, 18141879

Edited by Mathias Piana and Christer Carlsson

Martin Bressani, McGill University, Canada

Socio-Spatial Practice of the

Hawaris Everyday Life

Although the history of the Military Orders has been the

subject of research for a long time, their material legacy
has attracted less attention. In recent years, however, a vast
range of topics concerning the Orders building activities
were studied, primarily with the help of archaeology. This
volume contains ten articles discussing the archaeology
and architecture of buildings erected by the three major
Military Orders in different geographical regions. They cover
most countries of Western Europe and include a number of
important fortifications in the Levant. These studies break
new ground in the investigation of the built fabric of the
Military Orders.

This is a magnum opus, in more than one sense of the term.

An important work, the product of vast research and dedicated
scholarship, Bressanis biographical study is a timely
contribution not only to architectural studies but also to the
field of historical culture in general. Through tracing Violletle-Ducs achievement in relation to the broad transition from
Romanticism to Modernity, Bressani succeeds in bringing out
his wider significance as an artist and thinker, and as a major
figure in French Romanticism.

Architectural Heritage Revisited

A Holistic Engagement of its Tangible and
Intangible Constituents
Ilan Vit-Suzan, Escuela Nacional de Conservacin,
Restauracin y Museografa Manuel del Castillo
Negrete, INAH-UNESCO, Mexico
This book argues that we need to recognize the historic
monument as a tangible aspect of a holistic expression of
culture that is rooted in specific spatio-temporal conditions.
However, since the latter are constantly changing, it is
vital to identify an implicit contradiction with the goals of
conservation. By examining three major heritage monuments
the Pantheon, Teotihuacans Sun Pyramid and Alhambra
the book shows how these sites are the product of multiple
strategies and unforeseen agents, accumulated through
history.

The importance of Eugne-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814
1879) within modern architecture cannot be overstated. Key
theoretician of modernism, renowned restoration architect,
medieval archaeologist and champion of Gothic revivalism,
he also published some of the most influential texts in the
history of modern architecture. Martin Bressani expertly
traces Viollet-le-Ducs complex intellectual development,
showing how restoration, in all its layered meaning, shaped
his outlook. Through his life journey, we follow the route by
which the technological subject was born out of nineteenthcentury historicism.

Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem,

Queens University Belfast, UK
In this book, Mohamed Gamal Abdelmonem, gives us a
comprehensive, well-illustrated, and nicely written narrative
of The Architecture of Home in Cairo. It is a thorough study
of domestic space over many centuries with a clear account of
the transformation that dwellings in Cairo have undergone in
the past few centuries. That this comes to us from a Cairene
who clearly loves his city is an additional treat allowing us to
see with him how houses have been turned into homes over
time in a city that never ceases to surprise.
Nezar AlSayyad, University of California, Berkeley, USA
This book firstly describes the historical development of
the domestic spaces (indoor and outdoor), and provides
an inclusive analysis of spaces of everyday activities in
the hawari of old Cairo. It then broadens its analysis to
other parts of the city, highlighting different customs and
representations of home in the city at large. Cairo, in the
context of this book, is represented as the most sophisticated
urban centre in the Middle East with different and sometimes
contrasting approaches to the architecture of home, as a
practice and spatial system.

Architecture and the Late

Ottoman Historical Imaginary
Reconfiguring the Architectural Past
in a Modernizing Empire
Ahmet A. Ersoy, Boazii University, Turkey
STUDIES IN ART HISTORIOGRAPHY

Critical historiography at its best This refreshing account

of the art, architecture and culture of Tanzimat takes issue
with traditional frameworks of analysis and thrives on
attention to nuance, contingency, ambivalence, syncretism
and cultural reciprocity in explaining late Ottoman Empires
engagement with Europe A timely contribution to Ottoman/
Turkish studies as well as to broader theoretical debates on
orientalism, historicism, revivalism, authenticity, cultural
difference and identity formation in the modern world Above
all, a much-needed cosmopolitan perspective to counteract
the nationist neo-orientalism of political Islam in Turkey today.
Sibel Bozdogan, Harvard University, USA
While European eclecticism is examined as a critical moment
in western art history, little research has been conducted
in the historicist pursuits of late Ottoman architects as
they negotiated the nineteenth centurys vast inventory of
styles and embarked on a revivalist/Orientalist program
they identified as the Ottoman Renaissance. Ersoys book
examines the complex historicist discourse underlying this
renaissance through a close reading of a text conceived as
the movements canonizing manifesto: the Usul-i Mimari-i
Osmani.

Artistic Practices and Cultural

Transfer in Early Modern Italy
Essays in Honour of Deborah Howard
Edited by Nebahat Avciolu, Hunter College, CUNY,
USA and Allison Sherman, Queens University, Canada
This absorbing collection of essays on early modern Italy
combines shrewd cultural analysis with often surprising case
studies, ranging from the planning of St Andrews as a new
Rome, to sharply focused accounts of works by Michelangelo,
Titian and Veronese. Following the groundbreaking example
of Deborah Howards scholarship, a number of incisive essays
by architectural historians offer a timely reminder of how art
historical understanding is enriched by engagement with
architectural history in its broadest sense.
Paul Hills, Emeritus, Courtauld Institute of Art, UK
Showcasing both the diversity within and the porosity
between the centre and periphery in Renaissance art,
this volume explores the material mechanisms for the
transmission and evolution of ideas, artistic training and
networks, as well as the dynamics of collaboration and
exchange between artists, theorists and patrons. The
chapters, each with a wealth of groundbreaking research
and previously unpublished documentary evidence, as well
as innovative methodologies, offer new interpretations of
Italian art.

Atmospheres: Aesthetics
of Emotional Spaces
Tonino Griffero, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy
It was Tonino Griffero who first made the theory of
atmospheres known to the Italian audience. We now
appreciate even more his publishing the book in English,
which not only describes the phenomenology and theory
of atmospheres, but sets this within its historical and
international context.
Gernot Bhme, Professor of Philosophy emeritus,
Technical University of Darmstadt and Director of the
Institute for Practical Philosophy in Darmstadt, Germany
This book examines the role of atmospheres in daily life,
and defines their main characteristics. Outlining the typical
phenomenological situations in which we experience
atmospheres, it assesses their impact on contemporary
aesthetics. It puts forward a philosophical approach which
systematises a constellation of affects and climates,
finds patterns in the emotional tones of different spaces
(affordances) and assesses their impact on the felt body. It
also critically discusses the spatial turn invoked by several
of the social sciences, and argues that there is a need for a
non-psychologistic rethinking of the philosophy of emotions.

and Christian Frost, Birmingham City University, UK

Ulduz Maschaykh, University of Bonn, Germany

A welcome addition to a growing constellation of titles in

architectural humanities. This coedited volume of studies
offers thought-provoking insights into the architectonic
significance of Grossetestes intellectual oeuvre in its
scholastic mediaeval context. It also advances novel
theoretical directives in analyzing the architecture of
Lincoln Cathedral under Grossetestes Bishopric in its
English Gothic milieu.
Nader El-Bizri, American University of Beirut, Lebanon
Bishop Robert Grosseteste and Lincoln Cathedral is an
in-depth investigation of Grossetestes relationship to the
medieval cathedral at Lincoln and the surrounding city.
This book will contribute to the understanding of Gothic
architecture in early thirteenth century England most
specifically, how forms and spaces were conceived in relation
to the cultural, religious and political life of the period. The
essays make an important contribution to our understanding
of the relation between architecture, theology, politics and
society during the Middle Ages, and how religious spaces
were conceived and experienced.

This book examines the liveability and affordability of twentyfirst-century residential architecture. Focussing on the
architects and communities commitment to these housing
programmes, as well as that of the private building sector, it
stresses the importance of the context of the neighbourhoods
in which they are placed, which are either in the process of
urban transition or already gentrified. In doing so, the book
shows how, and to what extent, twenty-first-century dwelling
architecture developments can help to create an integrated
sense of community, diminish social and demographic
exclusions in a neighbourhood and incorporate peoples
desires as to what their buildings should look like.

and Timothy Wray
But, as noted, the divisions between still and moving image
are fading, and although the Camera Constructs is a detailed
and engaging anthology, with its gaze trained firmly on the
history and role of the still image in architecture, it is a book
that feels like a historical full-stop.
LSE Review of Books
Camera Constructs reflects critically on the varied
interactions of the different practices by which
photographers, artists, architects, theorists and historians
engage with the relationship of the camera to architecture,
the city and the evolution of Modernism. Including twentythree essays by a wide range of historians and theorists

In Contested Spaces: Abortion Clinics, Womens Shelters and

Hospitals feminist architectural research makes an important
return to explicit womens issues with a powerful and deeply
provocative situated examination of spaces in and around North
American abortion clinics. Drawing on the richness of feminist
analysis, cultural geography and design activism of the last
three decades, Lori A. Brown shows the extent to which these
spaces and the various geographies of access arise out of
state law as well as activities of anti-abortion protestors who
in turn drive new legislation and a vast security apparatus. The
book is a tribute to the professionals and activists who continue
to make choice a possibility, and an inspiring call to creative
practitioners to get involved.

ASHGATE STUDIES IN ARCHITECTURE

Series Editor: Eamonn Canniffe, Manchester School of Architecture, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
The discipline of Architecture is undergoing subtle transformation as design awareness permeates our visually dominated culture. Technological change, the search for sustainability and
debates around the value of place and meaning of the architectural gesture are aspects which will affect the cities we inhabit. This series seeks to address such topics, both theoretically
and in practice, through the publication of high quality original research, written and visual.
Topics to be covered include the following: Architectural history and theory and their relationship to the development of the discipline, building conservation, heritage and creative adaptation;
The formal and aesthetic values of architectural design, the diversity of its expression of identity, and its representation in other media; The impact of technological innovation on the
materialisation of architecture and the questions surrounding environmental sustainability, experimentation and visionary design; The social and psychological context of architectural
production, its relationship to occupants, clients and to other creative and professional disciplines, and the political situation in which it is commissioned.
Proposals will be welcomed which explore or connect aspects of these themes. Subjects which deal with individual architects, with specific buildings or building types, and the critical
interpretation of historical and contemporary architecture from a theoretical or philosophical perspective are particularly encouraged. Architectures embodiment of technical, social,
and aesthetic aspects will also be emphasised.

nearly encyclopedic lavishly illustrated this

collaborative discourse seeks to elevate a once-trivialized
art form to noble genre status by polemically redefining its
purpose as that of antidote to a modern world impoverished
by lifeless, functionalist architectural forms. Recommended.
Upper-division undergraduates and above.
Choice
Bringing together leading writers and practicing architects
including Jean Dethier, David Mayernik, Massimo Scolari,
Robert Adam, David Watkin and Leon Krier, this volume
provides a kaleidoscopic, multilayered exploration of the
Architectural Capriccio. It not only explains the phenomena
within a historical context, but moreover, demonstrates its
contemporary validity and appropriateness as a holistic
design methodology, an inspiring pictorial strategy, an
efficient rendering technique and an optimal didactic tool.
The book shows and comments on a wide range of historic
masterworks and highlights contemporary artists and
architects excelling in a modern updated, refreshed and
original tradition of the Capriccio.

Architectural Projects of
Marco Frascari: The Pleasure
of a Demonstration
Sam Ridgway, School of Architecture &
Built Environment, The University of Adelaide,
South Australia
Frascari is best-known for his remarkable texts, which
explore the intellectual, theoretical and practical substance
of the architectural discipline. Throughout his academic
career, he continued to work on numerous architectural
projects, including exhibitions, competition entries, and
designs for approximately 35 buildings. Sam Ridgway draws
on a wide selection of Frascaris texts, including his richly
poetic book Monsters of Architecture, to explore the themes
of representation, demonstration, and anthropomorphism.
Three of Frascaris delightful buildings are then brought
to light and interpreted, revealing a sophisticated and
interwoven relationship between texts and buildings.

The Architecture of Edwin

Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew

Architecture in an Age
of Uncertainty
Edited by Benjamin Flowers, Georgia Institute
of Technology, USA
After two decades which saw the construction industry
flourish, has come a sudden period of instability, where
architecture firms have been jettisoning employees at an
unprecedented rate as building projects dry up. This edited
volume brings together scholars, critics, and architects
to discuss the present state of uncertainty in the practice
and discipline of architecture. The chapters are organized

technology. Within this larger framework, authors explore
issues of security, ecological design, disaster architecture,
the future of architectural practice, and the ethical
obligations of the social practice of design.

There is something very remarkable about the careers of

Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew, husband and wife architects,
and this has little to do with star architects or spectacular
buildings. At last, with this patient and insightful book, we
have an account that does full justice to the seriousness
of this quiet but extensively-influential modernism.
Mark Crinson, University of Manchester, UK
This book thoroughly examines Fry and Drews highly
influential Tropical Architecture in West Africa and India,
whilst also discussing their British work, such as their post
World War II projects for the Festival of Britain, Harlow New
Town, Pilkington Brothers Headquarters and Coychurch
Crematorium. It highlights the collaborative nature of Fry and
Drews work, including schemes undertaken with Elizabeth
Denby, Walter Gropius, Denys Lasdun, Pierre Jeanneret and
Le Corbusier. Positioning their architecture, writing and
educational endeavours within a wider context, this book
illustrates the significant artistic and cultural contributions
made by Fry and Drew throughout their lengthy careers.

The Architecture of Luxury

Annette Condello, Curtin University, Australia
By relying on a wide range of resources such as classical
texts, poems, novels, paintings and photos, Condello
convincingly argues for a continuum of luxury and shows
that luxury continues to be creative in architecture the
book is above all a very inspiring read which should stimulate
further and more critical debates.
LSE Review of Books
Focusing on various contexts within Western Europe, Latin
America and the United States, this book traces the myths
and application of luxury within architecture, interiors and
designed landscapes. Spanning from antiquity to the modern
era, it sets out six historical categories of luxury and relates
these to the built and unbuilt environment, taking different
cultural contexts and historical periods into consideration.
It studies some of the ethical questions raised by the nature
of luxury in architecture and discusses whether architectural
luxury is an unqualified benefit or something which should
only be present within strict limits.

Building the Modern Church

Roman Catholic Church Architecture
in Britain, 1955 to 1975
The real strength of this book is that it engages with the
specific aspects of Catholic church design, whilst also making
a notable contribution to our understanding of postwar British
architectural history more generally draws on a rigourous
foundation of archival research, interviews and site visits
The study demonstrates real breadth, hjigh-lighting and
contextualising numerous, now little-known buildings as
well as more prominent examples.
Mo Mo World Scotland
The author examines changing conceptions of tradition
and modernity, and the development of a modern church
architecture that drew from the ideas of the liturgical
movement. Based on meticulous historical research in
primary sources, theoretically informed, fully referenced,
and thoroughly illustrated, this book will be of interest to
anyone concerned with the church architecture, art and
theology of this period.

issues still relevant today the struggle between imitation
and innovation, the definition (or rejection) of aesthetic
experience, the grounds of architectural judgment (who

From Formalism to Weak Form:

The Architecture and Philosophy
of Peter Eisenman
Stefano Corbo, Universidad Politcnica de Madrid,
Escuela Tcnica Superior de Arquitectura (ETSAM),
Spain
Eisenman has always been deeply interested in the problem
of form in architecture and has constantly challenged the
classical concept of it. He tried to connect his own work
with the cultural manifestations of the time: firstly under the
influence of Colin Rowe and his formalist studies; secondly,
by re-interpreting Chomskys linguistic theories; in the
80s, by collaborating with Derrida and his de-constructivist
approach; more recently by discovering Henri Bergsons
idea of Time. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach based
on the intersections between architecture and philosophy,
this book investigates all these definitions and, in doing so,
provides new insights into and a deeper understanding of the
complexity of Eisenmans work.

The Material Imagination

Reveries on Architecture and Matter

www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781472443144

Edited by Matthew Mindrup, University of Canberra,

Australia

In-Between: Architectural
Drawing and Imaginative
Knowledge in Islamic
and Western Traditions

The chapters of this book clarify and extend recent attempts

at a great reversal in architectural practice and theory:
overcoming the centuries-old prejudice that the materials of
a built work are insignificant until they are given form and
shape through design and construction. Argued instead is
that they have propensities, potentialities, and capacities
that attentive and imaginative design practices (poetics)
work with and against. Materials are not only formed by but
also inform the buildings geometries, finishes, and colors.
Mannerist architects figure prominently in this account, also
the great modernists, and many of our contemporaries all of
whom think with, not about, materials. This book helps us see
materials in a new way, and more largely, architecture itself.

This book argues that design drawings should be recognised

as intermediaries, mediating between the world of ideas
and the world of things, spanning the intangible and
tangible. The book argues that this in-between quality
to architectural drawing is essential and that it is critical
to perceive drawings as subtle bodies that hold physical
attributes (e.g. form, proportion, colour), highly evocative, yet
with no matter. Focusing on Islamic geometric architectural
drawings, both historical and contemporary, it draws on key
philosophical and conceptual notions of imagination from
the Islamic tradition as these relate to the creative act. It
also adds to debates on philosophies of the imagination,
linking both Western and Islamic traditions.

Don Johnson is an authority on Frank Lloyd Wright. He

is also an experienced architectural historian who takes
nothing for granted, and tenaciously goes back to basics
the original documents, the buildings themselves, and
their historical context when investigating tendentious
historical claims. This challenging study of Wrights five
concrete block houses deals with what was perhaps a
minor phase in Wrights prodigious output, but Johnsons
highly original conclusions have very wide implications for
our understanding of architectural mythology, the regional
architecture of the south-west, and the character and
reputation of Frank Lloyd Wright himself.

In recent years architectural discourse has witnessed a
renewed interest in materiality under the guise of such
familiar tropes as material honesty, form finding, or
digital materiality. As an alternative to a formal approach
in architectural design, this book challenges readers to
rethink the reverie of materials in architecture through
an examination of historical precedent, architectural
practice, literary sources, philosophical analyses and
everyday experience. Focusing on matter as the premise
of an architects imagination, each chapter identifies and
graphically illustrates how material imagination defines
the conceptual premises for making architecture.

Phenomenologies of the City

Studies in the History and Philosophy
of Architecture
Edited by Henriette Steiner and Maximilian Sternberg
For many years now phenomenology has influenced both
the theory and the practice of architecture, challenging a
still dominant preoccupation with technological innovation
and aesthetic uniqueness. But the most pressing challenge
facing architecture today, how it is to meet its social and
environmental responsibility, has received insufficient
attention. Focusing on the city, the present collection of
chapters addresses that deficit, where the high quality of
the contributions makes this also a tribute to the Cambridge
Department of Architecture, with which all the authors have
some connection.
Karsten Harries, Yale University, USA
This book brings architecture and urbanism into dialogue
with phenomenology. The contributors are architects and
scholars of urbanism with backgrounds in literature, history,
religious studies, and art history. Rather than developing
a single theoretical statement, the book addresses
architectures relationship with the city in a wide range of
historical and contemporary contexts. The chapters trace
hidden genealogies, and explore the ruptures as much as
the persistence of recurrent cultural motifs. Together, these
interconnected phenomenologies of the city raise simple but
fundamental questions: What is the city for, how is it ordered,
and how can it be understood?

contemporary art and architecture. Drawing upon a diverse
range of theories, practices, and reflections common to the
contemporary conceptualisation of the sketchbook and its
associated environments, it offers a dialogue in which the
sketchbook can be understood as a pivotal working tool
that contributes to the creative process and the formulation

Mark Jarzombek, Massachusetts Institute of Technology,

USA
Focusing on the Ghetto Fighters House, the worlds first
Holocaust museum; Yad Vashem, Israels national Holocaust
memorial in Jerusalem; the US Holocaust Memorial Museum
in Washington, and the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin,
the book discusses how the representation of history by
architecture creates a dialectic process in which architecture
mediates the past to the present, while at the same time
creating a present saturated with historical contexts. It
shows how, together, they are incorporated into one another
and create a new reality: past and present intertwined.

This book studies Holocaust museums on the premise that

their location away from the site of trauma poses an intriguing
set of representational, philosophical and even political
problems. Neumans brilliant and thorough analysis brings
the reader into the heart of the multi-layered contestations
about what architecture should or should not do in these
contexts.

Suspending Modernity:
The Architecture of Franco Albini
Kay Bea Jones, School of Architecture, Ohio State
University, USA
Suspending Modernity: The Architecture of Franco Albini,
visually compelling and written in accessible language, will
be a valuable resource for scholars, students, architects, and
others interested in Italian modernism.
Journal of Architectural Education
Kay Bea Jones illuminating study of selected works by
Studio Albini will reintroduce his contributions to one of
the most productive periods in Italian design. Suspending
Modernity follows the evolution of Albinis most important
buildings and projects, even as they reveal his apprehensive
attitudes about the modern condition. Albini clarified
the vital role of tradition in modern architecture as he
experimented with domestic space. His cohort defied CIAM
ideologies to re-socialize postwar housing and speculate on
ways of reviving Italian cities. Jones argues here that Albinis
masterful use of materials and architectural expression mark
an epic paradigm shift in the modern period.

DIGITAL RESEARCH IN THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES

This book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of

the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. The
first section provides a presentation of major movements in
architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey
that covers a wide range of territories around the world.
This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its
various authors, but also charts a middle course between the
aesthetic histories that examine architecture solely in terms
of its formal aspects, and the more ideological histories that
subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its
formal aspects.

Digital Archetypes redefines the possible of what we can

know about these monuments.

This is a masterly scholarly monograph that fills an

important gap in the literature on Cosmo Innes and
Scottish antiquarianism and its long afterlife in the nineteenth
century. Situating Innes in an older antiquarian tradition, the
author is able to convincingly demonstrate the importance
of Innes work with primary sources in making him such an
accepted authority of Scottish national history. Marsdens
historiographical discussion of Innes and his contextualisation
of him in the wider Scottish, British and European scenarios
are extremely lucid and helpful.
Stefan Berger, Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum, Germany
The antiquary Cosmo Innes (17981874) was a prolific
editor of medieval and early modern documents relating
to Scotlands parliament, legal system, burghs, universities,
aristocratic families and pre-Reformation church. This book,
which analyses Inness work and provides sources, opens a
window onto the ways in which Scottish identity and ideas
about the national past were perceived in Scotland during
the nineteenth century, a period when union with England
was all but unquestioned.

Jianfei Zhu, University of Melbourne, Australia
Identifying four key themes in Chinese philosophy to

architecture with Chinese philosophy, social sciences, and
the humanities, and in doing so, argues that Architectural
Multiculturalism is a vital ideology to guide housing design

This multi-disciplinary study of early archetypal Brahmanic,
Hindu and Buddhist temple architectures examines how
the styles from northwest India were adapted as they
spread into Southeast Asia. It unravels the specifically
compositional and architectural linkages along the trading
routes of South and Southeast Asia, and the common
themes and influences to be seen in the early temples of
Java, Cambodia and Champa. Using digital reconstruction
and recovery of three-dimensional temple forms, the authors
have developed a digital dataset of early Indian antecedents,
tested new technologies for the acquisition of built heritage
and developed new methods for comparative analysis of built
form geometry.

The Emergence of a Modern City

Golden Age Copenhagen 18001850
Henriette Steiner, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
During Denmarks Golden Age (c. 1800 to 1850),
Copenhagen came into being as a modern city on the
urban-cultural level. This book examines this period in the
citys history, just before the establishment of some of the
main features of the modernisation of cities associated
with industrialisation, such as street lighting, sewer
systems, and working class quarters. It assesses the work
of the most prominent architect of the period, C.F. Hansen,
in transforming the city physically, before moving on to
consider writings by three citizens of Copenhagen, the
philosopher Sren Kierkegaard, the novelist Thomasine
Gyllembourg and the criminal Ole Kollerd, all of whom
write about the citys institutional structure and urban life.

Emerging Landscapes
Between Production and Representation
Edited by Davide Deriu, Krystallia Kamvasinou
and Eugenie Shinkle, University of Westminster, UK
Drawing on the synergies between the fields of architecture
and photography, this collection takes a multidisciplinary
approach, combining practice-based research with scholarly
essays. It explores and critically reassesses the interface
between representation the imaginary and symbolic
shaping of the human environment and production the
physical and material changes wrought on the land. At a
time of environmental crisis and the end of nature, shifting
geopolitical boundaries and economic downturn, Emerging
Landscapes reflects on the state of landscape and its
future, mapping those practices that creatively address the
boundaries between possibility, opportunity and action in
imagining and shaping landscape.

DESIGN AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Series Editor: Matthew Carmona
Although a discipline with ancient roots, it is only very recently that urban design has been widely recognised by many national and local governments and by the established built environment
professions as a discrete and important area of practice with its own theoretical base and significant practical contribution to make to delivering and maintaining urban quality. With its
new status, urban design is now an expanding discipline sitting amongst and bridging the gaps between the established built environment professions of architecture, planning, surveying,
landscape architecture, and engineering. In this position, urban design also borrows from, and contributes to, academic discourse in areas as diverse as urban geography, sociology, public
administration, cultural studies, environmental management, and conservation and urban regeneration.
This series provides a means to disseminate more substantive urban and environmental design research. Specifically, contributions will be welcomed which are the result of original empirical
research, scholarly evaluation, reflection on the practice and the process of urban design, critical analysis of particular aspects of the built environment, or important conference proceedings.
Volumes should be of international interest, although they may focus on the particular experience and practice in one country. They may also reflect theory and practice from across one or
more of the spatial scales over which urban design operates, from environmental and spatial design of settlements, to a concern with large areas of towns and cities districts or quarters, to
consideration of individual developments, urban spaces and networks of spaces, to the contribution of architecture in the urban realm.

Examining colonized cities in East Asia, this book brings
together a range of different perspectives across both
space and time. European, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean
and Japanese discourses are examined, with a range of
complementary and conflicting views on the design of urban
and architectural forms; the political, institutional, religious
and economical contexts of urban planning; the role played
by various media; and the influence of various geographical,
social and anthropological research methods. The diversity
and plurality of these perspectives in this book provides
an entwined architectural, urban and social history of East
Asia, which offers insights into the cultural systems and
the historical and spatial meanings of these colonized cities.

The Design of Frontier Spaces shows that the divisions that

borders suggest are not in any way normal or natural, but that
their self-evidence and seeming stability is something that
needs to be continually maintained. This is the crucial yet
often-overlooked work of design, which the books contributors
analyze in compelling and diverse ways.
Kenny Cupers, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
USA
This text is unique in bringing together a number of scholarly
perspectives in the arts and humanities to examine how
spatial and architectural design decisions convey meaning,
shape or abet specific social practices, and stage memories
of frontier zones that no longer function as such. With
studies from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and
North America, this collection of essays casts a wide net
to consider borders of diverse sorts. This range allows for
reflection on shifts in how frontier zones are articulated and
the impermanence of border emplacements, as well as on
likely scenarios for future frontiers.

Gothenburg, Sweden
The 21st century demands a different kind of architect,
open to new ways of thinking about design and the role of
the profession in the social, economic and political arenas.
Emergent Urbanism is a timely publication that skilfully
illuminates these broader forces of structural change, and
reminds us that cities must ultimately respond to the
aspirations and needs of the people that call them home.
Alfredo Brillembourg, Urban-Think Tank/ETH Zrich,
Switzerland
Bringing together leading academics from across a range
of disciplines, Emergent Urbanism identifies the specific
issues dominating todays urban planning and urban design
discourse, arguing that urban planning and design not only
results from deliberate planning and design measures, but
how these combine with infrastructure planning, and derive
from economic, social and spatial processes of structural
change. Combining explorations from urban planning,
urban theory, human geography, sociology, urban design
and architecture, the volume provides a comprehensive and
state-of-the-art overview, highlighting the complexities of
these interactions in space and place, process and design.

Measuring Public Space:

The Star Model
Georgiana Varna, University of Glasgow, UK
Public space is an integral ingredient of urban life, with
a degree of complexity that requires multi-dimensional
sensibility in theory and practice. Georgiana Varna insightfully
approaches the subject by developing a new methodology
for assessing the publicness of public spaces through five
dimensions (ownership, control, physical configuration,
animation, and civility), which are exemplified by three
cases from Glasgow.
Ali Madanipour, Newcastle University, UK
This book shows how urban design can complement other
disciplines when tackling the complex task of understanding
and improving the built environments public realm. It also
bridges the gap between theory and practice as it draws from
empirical research to suggest more quantitative approaches
towards auditing and improving public places. By seeing
where and why certain public places fail, direct and informed
interventions can be made to improve them and through this
contribute to the building of more attractive and sustainable
cities.

DESIGN RESEARCH IN ARCHITECTURE

Series Editors: Murray Fraser, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK, Jonathan Hill and Jane Rendell, both at Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, UK
and Teddy Cruz, Department of Architecture, University of California at San Diego, USA
Bridging a range of positions between practice and academia, this series seeks out the best proponents of architectural design research from around the world. These texts will be varied in
tone and structure, and will discuss aspects including design method, visual representation, textual analysis, social processes, and strategies for action. The series is to be deliberately inclusive
in order to encourage a novel and vibrant kind of approach for architectural research. Each of the books will contain a large amount of serious and innovative historical or theoretical research,
combined with creative propositions realized through a mixture of drawings, models and textual analysis. It is the essential symbiotic interplay between these components which creates the
framework for design research in architecture.
The precise working of the interplay of text and project in architectural design research remains a much debated and relatively unformed issue, and this is of course symptomatic of the
conditions facing any newly emerging subject area. The broader questions and theoretical structures of design research have formed the basis of discussions in international refereed journals
such as The Journal of Architecture, and there is undoubtedly more intellectual work to be done in such areas. But there is also the need to form knowledge and method through actual
propositions, with these studies enabling their authors not just to explore, propose and reflect on their specific subject-at-hand, but also on the wider nature of design research in general. It is
for this express reason that this series aims to publish as widely as possible a number of the very best outputs in the field of design research, to allow others to use them as exemplars or to take
issue with them through reasoned critique. It is a fertile time for design research and this book series will act at the heart of these investigations and discussions.

Edited by Murray Fraser, Bartlett School of Architecture,

Nigel Bertram, NMBW Architecture Studio and Monash

University, Australia

Recently in many architectural schools efforts intensified to

further develop architectural research. Exciting new avenues
are being explored, relying upon the design skills of architects
and urban designers, combining them with intellectual rigor
and in-depth thinking, in order to imagine new spatialities
and to unfold hitherto unknown spatial experiences. This
series highlights the innovative results of these explorations,
opening up a new world of path-breaking research.
Hilde Heynen, University of Leuven, Belgium
During the last 30 years, technological, social, economic
and environmental changes have brought about the most
dramatic evolution to architectural practice that has taken
place since the profession emerged during the Italian
Renaissance. Whilst these changes have transformed the
way architects work, few contemporary books discuss
architectural practice. The Architecture Chronicle sets out
to define the role of the contemporary architect in the light
of these changes. It also engages with the design and
production process and investigates how design decisions
are being made and by whom they are executed.

Australia
A panoramic contribution to the history of the modern city,
revealing for the first time how temporary exhibits have left
a permanent mark upon the urban landscape, and which is
where planning culture comes in on societys perceptions
of past, present and future.
Michael Hebbert, University College London, UK
Bringing together a range of international case studies, this
volume explores the highly visual genre of public planning
exhibitions worldwide. In doing so, it provides a unique lens
on the development of modern urban planning and design
from the late 19th century to the present day. Focussing
mainly on the first half of the 20th century, it looks in
particular at historic exhibitions which sought to transform
urban societys understanding of the possibilities of planning
as a force for social betterment.

Explorations in Urban Design

An Urban Design Research Primer
Edited by Matthew Carmona, Bartlett School of
Planning, UCL, London
This book brings together a rich and varied set of approaches
for not only understanding and analysing existing urban
situations but also how to go about starting the design
process for a new urban layout Highlights of the book are
the many essays which propose completely new approaches
for urban design (it) is a fascinating gathering of the recent
research UCLs many built environment departments (and)
will interest anyone with a passion for urban design. This is a
must read for those working in the field and a go to reference
work for students.
RIAS Quarterly
This book advances an interdisciplinary and innovative
approach to urban design, whilst recognising that distinctly
different traditions exist within its study and practice. It
informs users who are grappling with urban design research
problems, but who need the inspiration to move from idea
to methodological approach. Through the work of 32 urban
researchers from the arts, sciences and social sciences, it
demonstrates a wide range of problems and approaches and
shows how the diverse range of complementary approaches
can come together to provide a holistic understanding to the
design of cities.

HERITAGE, CULTURE AND IDENTITY

Series Editor: Brian Graham, University of Ulster, UK
This series explores all notions of heritage including social and cultural heritage, the meanings of place and identity,
multiculturalism, management and planning, tourism, conservation, and the built environment at all scales from the global
to the local. Although primarily geographical in orientation, it is open to other disciplines such as anthropology, history, cultural
studies, planning, tourism, architecture/conservation, and local governance and cultural economics.

Building a World Heritage City

Who Needs Experts?

Sanaa, Yemen

Counter-mapping Cultural Heritage

Michele Lamprakos, University of Maryland-College

Park, USA

Edited by John Schofield, University of York, UK

Michael Herzfeld, Harvard University, USA

Individually and in sum, the chapters collected here launch

a convincing attack on the ways in which expertise has
been used to build authority and hence to exclude laypersons
from an involvement in heritage. They do so not only by
critiquing the concept directly, but also through case studies
which show how counter-heritages can radically undermine
older models to provide innovative, new, and ultimately more
democratic ways of understanding heritage and its role in
contemporary society.

Conservation in Sanaa raises a fundamental question:

what does it mean to conserve in a place where the historic
past is still alive? How must international agencies and
consultants readjust theory and practice as they interact
with the living representatives of this historic past? And what
are the implications of the case of Sanaa for conservation
in general? Building a World Heritage City addresses these
questions, drawing on the methodologies of history,
architecture, and ethnography. Based on extensive fieldwork,
this book looks at conservation from the ground up through
the eyes of architects, builders, residents, and officials.

Taking the significant Faro Convention on the Value of

Cultural Heritage for Society (Council of Europe 2005) as its
starting point, this book presents pragmatic views on the
rise of the local and the everyday within cultural heritage
discourse and it examines ways in which authorised or
expert views of heritage can be challenged. It concludes
that local agenda and everyday places matter, and examines
how a realignment of heritage practice to accommodate
such things could usefully contribute to more inclusive
and socially relevant cultural agenda.

Includes 58 colour illustrations

Includes 51 b&w illustrations

In this richly documented account of conservation in a

living city, Michele Lamprakos portrays a vast array of voices
and skills; we encounter local builders, architects, planners,
bureaucrats, politicians, and various foreign nationals who
have influenced Sanaas evolution to its present condition.
Building a World Heritage City is a stunning and critically
important achievement.

World Heritage in Iran

Perspectives on Pasargadae
Edited by Ali Mozaffari, Australia-Asia-Pacific Institute
(AAPI), Curtin University, Australia
An excellent introduction to the historical and modern
significance of this World Heritage site. It is an important
milestone in the development of the heritage literature, because
it explains the world-historical importance of the site for our
own cultural heritage (in which it has been overshadowed
by Greece), and for Iran in the modern Middle East.
Brian Spooner, University of Pennsylvania, USA
This edited volume presents for the first time a broad,
multi-disciplinary examination of Pasargadae by experts
from both outside and within Iran. It specifically focuses on
those disciplines that are absent from existing studies, such
as ethnography, tourism and museum studies providing
valuable insights into this fascinating place. In its totality,
the book argues that to understand World Heritage sites
and their problems fully, a holistic approach should be
adopted, which considers the manifold of perspectives and
issues. It also puts forward a novel approach to the question
of heritage, representation and construction of collective
identity from the framework of place.

Architecture
George Hadfield: Architect of the
Federal City

Geographical Aesthetics
Imagining Space, Staging Encounters
Edited by Harriet Hawkins, Royal Holloway, University
of London, UK and Elizabeth Straughan, University of
Glasgow, UK
This carefully-crafted work interrogates how aesthetics
is politicized, spatialized, thought, and felt. Seamlessly,
synthetically, Hawkins, Straughan and colleagues critically
and creatively analyse elements of the aesthetic in
geographical encounters that reinvigorate a geography of
surfaces. The effect is to demonstrate the importance and
utility of a richly geo-aesthetic understanding of the world.
Elaine Stratford, University of Tasmania, Australia
Bringing together timely commentaries by international,
interdisciplinary scholars, Geographical Aesthetics is the
first volume to make questions of geographical aesthetics
a substantive concern. It reworks the historical relations
between geography and aesthetics, and reconsiders how
it is we might understand aesthetics. It then reaffirms the
value of aesthetics in relation to key intellectual concerns
within Geography and explores the geographies of the
aesthetic, in particular the spatialities and imaginaries that
mark its theorisations. In renewing aesthetics as a site of
investigation, but also an analytic object through which we
can think about the encounters, the meetings and minglings
of the world, what also emerges is powerful reworking of
our geographical imaginary of the aesthetic.

The Geographical Unconscious

Argyro Loukaki, Hellenic Open University, Greece
An ambitious, eloquent and sensitive excavation of ways of
thinking and seeing landscapes, places and spaces over the
ages. This is a book to restore faith in the human ability to
shape diverse worlds in ways consistent with ancient and
modern ideals of justice, beauty and morality.

Julia King
During his lifetime, the work of architect George Hadfield
(17631826) was highly regarded, both in England and
the United States. Since his death, however, Hadfields
contributions to architecture have slowly faded from view,
and few of his buildings survive. In order to reassess
Hadfields career and work, this book draws upon a wide
selection of written and visual sources to reconstruct his
life and legacy.

The Greening of Architecture

A Critical History and Survey of
Contemporary Sustainable Architecture
and Urban Design
Phillip James Tabb, Texas A&M University, USA and
A. Senem Deviren, Istanbul Technical University, Turkey
As a whole, the book lies somewhere between a textbook
and an extended essay on green architecture and provides
a general survey of the physical aspects of green and
sustainable design The most useful contribution of the
book is the exposition of the multiple ideas and projects that
have inspired and informed green and sustainable design
approaches By highlighting the complex and dynamic
trajectory of green and sustainable design over the last
half century, the authors provide inspiration for how these
practices might evolve and expand in the twenty-first century.
LSE Review of Books

Gordon Matta-Clarks
Conical Intersect
Sculpture, Space, and the Cultural Value
of Urban Imagery
Peter Muir, Associate Lecturer, Open University, UK
In this in-depth analysis, Peter Muir argues that Gordon
Matta-Clarks Conical Intersect (1975) is emblematic of
Henri Lefebvres understanding of arts function in relation
to urban space. By engaging with Lefebvres theory in
conjunction with the perspectives of other writers, such as
Michel de Certeau, Jacques Derrida, and George Bataille, the
book elicits a story that presents the artworks significance,
origins and legacies. Muir argues that Conical Intersect
is much more than an artistic hole. Due to its location at
Plateau Beaubourg in Paris, it is simultaneously an object
of art and an instrument of social critique.

Hagia Sophia and the

Byzantine Aesthetic Experience
Nadine Schibille, University of Sussex, UK
Paramount in the shaping of early Byzantine identity was the
construction of the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople
(532537 CE). This book examines the edifice from the
perspective of aesthetics to define the concept of beauty and
the meaning of art in early Byzantium. Byzantine aesthetic
thought is re-evaluated against late antique Neoplatonism
and the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius that offer fundamental
paradigms for the late antique attitude towards art and
beauty.

David Harvey, CUNY Graduate Center, USA

This ambitious and innovative volume stretches over
time and space, over the history of modernity in relation
to antiquity, between East and West, to offer insights into
what the author terms the geographical unconscious. She
argues that, by tapping into this, we can contribute towards
the reinstatement of some kind of morality and justice in
todays troubled world. Approaching selected moments from
ancient times to the present of Greek cultural and aesthetic
geographies, the book examines diachronic spatiotemporal
flows, which are cultural, urban or landscape-related, in
conjunction with parallel currents of change and key issues
of our time.

The Geometry of Creation

Architectural Drawing and the Dynamics of Gothic Design
Robert Bork, University of Iowa, USA
This is an exceptional book that casts new light on the design processes of
medieval architects. Bork has taken the radical and novel step of looking at
surviving medieval drawings in the hope of finding the geometrical logic behind
their structures and decorations. The results have been spectacular. He can
plot the lines the original designers actually used in developing their geometric
schemes, and he does so with a sharpness of vision unmatched by any of his
predecessors in the field. Bork is able to show a remarkable continuity of design
practice in medieval architecture, from Villard de Honnecourt to Lorenz Lechler.
Paul Frankl had already said as much, but no one before Bork has demonstrated
it in such detail and with such authority.
Professor Paul Crossley, The Courtauld Institute of Art
This book offers a new perspective on Gothic architectural creativity. It shows,
in a series of geometrical case studies, how Gothic design evolved over time,
in two senses: in the hours of the draftsmans labour, and across the centuries
of the late Middle Ages. In each case, a series of computer graphics show
how a medieval designer could have developed his architectural concept step
by step, using only basic geometrical operations. Taken together, these analyses
demonstrate remarkable methodological continuity across the Gothic era, and the
development of sophisticated permutations on venerable design themes.

Architecture
The Hero Building
An Architecture of Scottish National Identity

An Introduction to Landscape
and Garden Design and Practice

Johnny Rodger, Mackintosh School of Architecture,

Glasgow School of Art, UK

SECOND EDITION

A contribution not only to architectural history but also to

describing the deeper aesthetic self-conception of nationality
in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Scotland. The
layers of civic, historic and literary consciousness essayed
in this book make it a bold new landmark in the explanation
of Scotlands monumentality.

How do you design a landscape book suitable for its

intended uses? How can the natural qualities of a landscape
be enhanced with new features and focal points? How can
you make pedestrians stay on the footpath? What kind of
plant, path or wall should you put where, and what sort of
contract should you choose for your clients contractor?
This refreshing, down-to-earth book answers these
questions, guiding new students through the many facets of
professional practice and welding together the artistic, legal,
financial, environmental and management issues which can
seem so dauntingly disconnected.

Gerard Carruthers, University of Glasgow, UK

A tradition of building architectural monuments
to commemorate national heroes has developed as a
distinctive feature of the Scottish built environment. This
book examines this architectural culture by studying
a prominent selection of buildings, such as the Burns
monuments in Alloway, Edinburgh and Kilmarnock, the
Edinburgh Scott Monument, the Glenfinnan Monument and
the Wallace Monument in Stirling. By raising awareness of
this rich architectural and social heritage, while analysing
and interpreting the buildings in their historical context, this
book makes an exciting and original scholarly contribution to
the current debates on identity and nationality taking place
in Scotland and the wider UK.

Ineffably Urban: Imaging Buffalo

Edited by Miriam Paeslack, University at Buffalo (SUNY),
Buffalo, NY, USA
Ineffably Urban: Imaging Buffalo, challenges and complicates
the usual imagery and discourse surrounding todays
shrinking cities. Here artists, designers, and activists as well
as academics probe what remains unexpressed about Buffalo.
Excavating the many lives and places nested within the citys
past and present, this collection imagines another kind of
urbanity, at once complex yet sustainable, for the future.
Mary N. Woods, Cornell University, USA
While illustrated by Buffalo in particular, this book examines
a broader phenomenon: the identity of those cities that
were built and blossomed during the late 19th and early
20th century and are now in different stages of decline and
disintegration. Bringing together a range of scholars from
the humanities, the social sciences, art and architecture,
this volume looks at both the literal city image and urban
representation generated by photographs, video, historical
and contemporary narratives, and grass-root initiatives.
It investigates the notion of agency of media in the city
and, in return, what the citys agency is.

Infrastructure and the

Architectures of Modernity
in Ireland 19162016
Edited by Gary A. Boyd, Queens University Belfast, UK
and John McLaughlin, John McLaughlin Architects,
Dublin, Ireland
At the formation of the new Republic of Ireland, the
construction of new infrastructures was seen as an
essential element in the building of the new nation.
Accordingly, infrastructure became the physical
manifestation, the concrete identity of these objectives
and architecture formed an integral part of this narrative.
Moving between scales and from artefact to context,
Infrastructure and the Architectures of Modernity in Ireland
19162016 provides critical insights and narratives on what
is a complex and hitherto overlooked landscape, one which
is often as much international as it is Irish. In doing so, it
explores the interaction between the universalising and
globalising tendencies of modernisation on one hand
and the textures of local architectures on the other.

Iron, Ornament and

Architecture in Victorian Britain
Myth and Modernity, Excess and
Enchantment

45.00 $79.95

In the half century after the building of the Crystal Palace

(1851), some architects, engineers, manufacturers and
theorists believed that the fusion of iron and ornament
would reconcile art and technology and create a new,
modern architectural language. This book studies the
development of mechanised architectural ornament in
iron in nineteenth-century architecture, its reception and
theorisation, and the contexts in which it flourished. As such,
it offers new ways of understanding the notion of modernity
in Victorian architecture.

It is unique to find a book that offers such a wide range of

professional and business performance topics, and relate them
to a particular profession. Gordon, with his unique professional
background, has achieved this with Landscape Professional
Practice. The aims of chapters are clearly presented, and
the breadth of experience is impressive, covering business
management concepts, professional ethics, negligence,
and a range of other subjects of importance to landscape
professionals. I hope many professionals will benefit from the
knowledge and experience this publication has to offer.

Guided by the Landscape Institutes 2013 Pathway to
Chartership syllabus, this structured, step-by-step,
narrative guide sets out the documentation commonly used
within the landscape profession. As an understanding of
professional practice is intrinsic to all Landscape Institute
accredited courses, this is an essential text for every
landscape architecture student during their education and
their subsequent journey into professional practice. Those
undertaking Garden Design Diplomas will similarly find the
book invaluable as they venture into the world of creativity
and commerce, while the seasoned practitioner will find it a
comprehensive point of reference to add to their bookshelf.

Landscape and Sustainable

Development
The French Perspective
Edited by Yves Luginbuhl, CNRS, Paris, France,
Peter Howard, Bournemouth University, UK, and
Daniel Terrasson, CEMAGREF and IRSTEA, France
The adoption of the European Landscape Convention in
2000 by the Council of Europe transformed landscape policy,
which had hitherto been preoccupied with the protection of
exceptional landscapes. This important book, the outcome
of an international and interdisciplinary research project led
by the French Ministry of Ecology, demonstrates the role
that ordinary, everyday landscapes have to play in issues
of sustainability and resilience, and argues that landscape
is a res publica, a matter that concerns everyone and should
be debated by everybody.
Ian Thompson, University of Newcastle, UK
Previously published in French by Editions Quae, this
volume presents findings of a major research programme
into landscape and sustainable development. While led
by French scholars, the research team and geographical
scope of the project was international, collaborative and
comparative. Using case studies from across Europe,
the interdisciplinary team of contributors discuss the
relationship between landscape as defined by the European
Landscape Convention and the concept of sustainable
development. This English edition has a new introduction
written by Yves Luginbhl and Peter Howard. Some of
the topics covered, such as wind-farm landscapes, will be
familiar to English language readers, but others, are less
so, such as footpath economics, non-woodland trees, intergenerational equity, and the insistence on the necessary
developments in governance.

Modern Architecture and

its Representation in Colonial
Eritrea
An In-visible Colony, 18901941
Sean Anderson, Faculty of Architecture, Design
and Planning, The University of Sydney, Australia
Drawing together imperial projects, modernist aesthetics,
and fascist motives, this book examines how the merger of
these three significant influences yielded a complex built
environment that served to emulate, if not redefine, Italian
colonial pursuits. Exploring discourses of modernity in
Africa, this book moves between histories of architecture,
urbanism and media to describe how Eritrea and Asmara
became a crucial fulcrum for Italys ill-fated pursuits in
Ethiopia and other neighboring countries and illustrates how
architecture in Asmara reshaped the creation and reception
of Italian East Africa.

Ordnance: War + Architecture

& Space

Where Architecture Meets Museology

Kali Tzortzi, University of Patras, Greece
The book is an excellent and timely contribution to an
important critical debate in museum studies and architecture:
how to conceptualise and analyse the architectural
organization of display spaces in museums and the movement
of visitors within them. Tzortzis exploration of the syntactic
analysis of museum space stands as the most accessible and
reader-friendly account of this important method. This book is
required reading for anyone interested in understanding and
analyzing museum space.

Edited by Gary A. Boyd, Queens University Belfast, UK

and Denis Linehan, University College Cork, Ireland

Sara Westin, Uppsala University, Sweden

From colonies, bunkers and camouflaged buildings to maps,

railways, watchtowers, counter-terrorist street furniture, even
homes Like no book before it, Ordnance really gets to grips
with the many ways in which militarism stalks everyday
architecture, infrastructure, landscape and memory. A startling
and beautifully illustrated collection that should become a
pivotal text in burgeoning debates about the architectures
of war past and present.

As the gifted geographer she is, Sara Westin knows where

power is hiding its secrets and revealing its truths: in the
gap between good intentions and the world as it is. Set on
understanding what is happening in this no-mans land
she puts the planning profession on the couch, the tragic
structure of thought-and-action laid bare in the process.
Quite an achievement, Nietzsche and Freud nodding their
heads in recognition.

Ornament and Order

Based on an in-depth ethnographic study working with

some of the worlds most influential independent public
artists, this book takes a completely new approach. Placing
these illicit aesthetic practices within a broader historical,
political, and aesthetic context, it argues that they are in
fact both intrinsically ornamental (working within a classic
architectonic framework), as well as innately ordered (within
a highly ritualized, performative structure). Rather than
disharmonic, destructive forms, rather than ones solely
working within the dynamics of the market, these insurgent
images are seen to reface rather than deface the city,
operating within a modality of contemporary civic ritual.

Edited by Lynn Churchill and Dianne Smith,

Curtin University, Western Australia
This theme of occupation is significant and topical at a time
of radical flux, generated by the proliferation of hypermedia,
and also by the dramatically shifting environmental,
political and economic context of this era. Bringing
together contributors from the fields of practice, theory
and history, this book takes a fresh look at occupation. It
argues that occupation is a prospect that begins with ruin
a residue from the past, an implied or even a resounding
presence of something previous that holds the potential
for transformation. This prospect invites us to repudiate,
re-imagine and re-define lived-space, thereby asserting
occupation as an act of revolution.

Using a philosophical and psychoanalytical approach,
this book critically examines expert knowledge within
architecture and urban planning. Its point of departure is the
gap between visions and realities, intentions and outcomes
in planning, with particular focus on projects in Sweden that
try to create an urban atmosphere. Finding insights from the
work of Sigmund Freud and his followers, the book argues
that urban planning during the 20th century is a neurotic
activity prone to produce a type of alienation.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN PLANNING THEORY

Stephen Graham, Newcastle University, UK

Christopher Whitehead, Newcastle University, UK

How does the architecture of museums affect our experience
as visitors? This book proposes that by seeing space as
common ground between architecture and museology,
and so between the museum building and its display, we
can illuminate the individuality of each museum and the
distinctive experience it offers. The book starts with an
overview of the history of museum buildings and display
strategies. It then focuses on specific museums as in-depth
case studies, and uses methods of spatial analysis to look at
the key design choices available to architects and curators,
and their effects on visitors behaviour. Theoretically
grounded, methodologically original, and richly illustrated,
this book will equip students, researchers and professionals
in the fields of architecture, museum studies, curating,
exhibition design, and cultural studies, with a guide for
studying museums and a theoretical framework for their
interpretation.

Pevsner: The BBC Years

Listening to the Visual Arts
Stephen Games, owner, New Premises design studio, UK
This book looks at the rise in Pevsners standing at the
BBC, at what he was admired for, and at the circumstances
surrounding his being commissioned, in the mid-1950s,
to give the first series of Reith Lectures on an arts subject.
It also documents the unravelling of Pevsners reputation,
showing how he was caught between changing fashions in
media culture and doubts about the safety of his ideas both
within the BBC and, externally, by British conservatives who
found him too radical and American radicals who found him
too conservative.

The Netherlandish Image after Iconoclasm, 15661672

Material Religion in the Dutch Golden Age
Mia M. Mochizuki, Jesuit School of Theology, and Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California, USA
Outstanding It sets one building the Great Church at Haarlem in an exceptionally broad context as built form, as
culturally symbolic artefact, and as a vehicle for didactic decoration Her story begins in the Roman Catholic era, examines
the motives behind iconoclasm, its destructive force as well as its generative power, and then details the appropriation of
the church by the local Reformed Community. All this is done with exceptional precision, imaginative insight and scholarly
depth.
Graham Howes, ACE trustee
Debunking the myth of the stark white Protestant church interior, this innovative book draws on art history, reformation
history and theology to explain the impact of iconoclasm on the cultural topography of the Dutch Golden Age. Lavishly
illustrated with color photographs of many objects never before published, this study identifies a previously overlooked
aspect of iconoclasm: while acknowledging its destructive force, Mochizuki also discloses its generative power and the
remarkable creativity it unleashed.

This book brings together the surviving texts of the 113

talks on art and architecture that we know of, given by the
art historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner on radio and television
between 19451977. These talks are important as an example
of the attempt by the BBC in particular to provide intellectual
programming for the mass population. The talks are
important for what they reveal about changing tastes in the
treatment of the arts as a broadcast topic, as well as offering
a case study of the development of one particular historians
approach to a subject that was gaining ground in universities
as a direct result of his popularisation of it.

Architecture
Place-making for the
Imagination: Horace Walpole
and Strawberry Hill
Marion Harney, University of Bath, UK
Based on doctoral research, this well-illustrated book
provides new analysis of Horace Walpoles Strawberry Hill,
encompassing his extraordinary mid-eighteenth century
house, garden, and collection at Twickenham on Londons
Thames River. Harney takes as her thesis the idea that Walpole
was influenced by ideas of association and imagination,
especially as earlier articulated in Joseph Addisons celebrated
Spectator articles The Pleasures of the Imagination (1712).
Rather than seeing Strawberry Hill as some grotesque Gothick
precursor to later, more strident and archaeologically correct
Gothic Revival, Harney argues for a reappraisal of Walpoles
ensemble as a carefully integrated and philosophically cogent
epresentation of his aesthetic beliefs.

Remembering the
Cultural Geographies
of a Childhood Home
Peter Hughes Jachimiak, University of South Wales, UK
A wonderful example of doing cultural geography: of
evocative and resonant auto-ethnography. A kaleidoscopic
view of the 1970s in which the places, experiences, beliefs
and reveries of a childhood in South Wales and the books,
comics, television programmes, films and popular pursuits
of the period constantly shift to create new and provocative
perceptions of the cultural fabric and transformations of
that difficult decade. A valuable, creative and highly readable
addition to the literature on geographies of childhood, and
especially on the impact of media.
Mike Pearson, Aberystwyth University, UK
This book is primarily structured by the authors memories
of living in his own Welsh childhood home during the 1970s.
Employing an innovative auto-ethnographic approach
to investigate the otherness of the places that make up

memory-derived and memory-imbued cultural geographies,

This book not only shows how architects can learn from
traditional or vernacular dwellings in order to create
habitations for the people of low-income groups in public
housing scenarios, but also demonstrates how the
architecture of the economically underprivileged classes
goes beyond culturally-inspired tectonic interpretations
of vernacular traditions by architects for high profile
clients. It explores how the resourceful dwellings of the
underprivileged inhabitants of the great cities in developing
parts of the world pioneered certain concepts of modernism
and contemporary design practices such as sustainable and
de-constructivist design.

Rural Modernity, Everyday Life

and Visual Culture
Rosemary Shirley, Manchester School of Art,
Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
In a compelling and innovative account of specific
customs and creative practices in rural England, Rosemary
Shirleys focus on the rhythms and rituals of the everyday
in non-metropolitan situations valuably disrupts that
still habitual view of the countryside as a timeless and
anti-modern landscape to be looked upon from outside, for
an understanding of lived sites of modernity which are just
as complex, dynamic and evolving as those urban contexts
more frequently considered in studies of visual culture and
everyday life.
Ysanne Holt, University of Northumbria, UK

Islamic Architecture in the Lands of Rum,

12401330

Through the lens of the everyday, this book explores the

countryside as an inhabited and practised realm with lived
rhythms and routines .It relocates the topography of everyday
life from its habitually urban focus, out into the English
countryside. The rural is often portrayed as existing outside
of modernity, or as its passive victim. Here, the rural is recast
as an active and complex site of modernity, a shift which
contributes alternative ways of thinking the rural and a new
perspective on the everyday.

Rebuilding Anatolia after

the Mongol Conquest

BIRMINGHAM BYZANTINE AND OTTOMAN STUDIES: CS17

Beginning with the Mongol conquest of Anatolia in 1243,

and ending with the demise of the Ilkhanid Empire in the
1330s, this book considers how the integration of Anatolia
into the Mongol world system transformed architecture
and patronage in this frontier region. Blessing considers
the monuments built during this period alongside written
sources in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. In doing so, she
untangles the narratives of architecture, history and religion
and provides a broader understanding of the interaction of
identities in the medieval Middle East.

I found the content of the book to be both interesting and very
informative. It certainly made me wonder just how much we
have wasted, in particular, through replacement of windows
where simple professional repair would have been both more
cost effective and would have retained the original features.
It also made me think just how much money we waste on
treatment of timber when if property surveys are carried out

effective and less destructive to the building fabric.

a revised, extended and re-designed edition, photographer
Sarah Quill has selected passages from Ruskins The Stones
of Venice and has linked them to her own photographs of
Venetian architecture, so creating a fascinating guide that
fuses Ruskins vision of the city with images of the present
day.

In the last two decades, research on spatial paradigms
and practices has gained momentum across disciplines
and periods, including the field of medieval studies.
Responding to this spatial turn in the humanities, the
essays collected here generate new ideas about how
medieval space was defined, constructed, and practiced in
Europe, particularly in France. The resulting collection builds
on existing scholarship but brings new insight, situating
medieval constructions of space in relation to contemporary

Places, Territories, and Imagined Geographies

Examining the urban culture and landscapes of Istanbul

through ehrengiz, a genre of Ottoman poetry written in
honor of various cities and provincial towns, this book
questions the space culture of the Ottoman world in relation
to practices of orthodox and heterodox Islam and imperial

into a movement of urban space reform.

the Ottoman sehrengiz were a function of the Melm sufi
order. This is as breath-taking as to say that performances
at the Globe Theatre of Elizabethan England were a function
of a secret mystical order penetrating the highest levels
of government. Yet in this authors hands the exposition
proceeds at a calm, comfortable pace, rigorously supported
and comfortably thorough.

Space in the Medieval West

During the twentieth century, an increasingly diverse range

of buildings and spaces were used for theatre. Theatre
architecture was re-formed by new approaches to staging
and performance, while theatre was often thought to have a
reforming role in society. Innovation was accompanied by the
revival and reinterpretation of older ideas, which this book
explores in a variety of contexts, from detailed discussions
of key architects work, to broader surveys of theatre in West
Germany and Japan. Together these essays shed new light
on this complex building type and also contribute to the
wider architectural history of the twentieth century.

Spatial Design Education

Ashraf M. Salama, University of Strathclyde, UK
Building on a rigorous and critical examination of a wide
spectrum of architectural design pedagogies over time, Ashraf
Salama constructs a convincing argument for the need for a
design pedagogy that is more responsive to todays social and
environmental demands. Salamas well-articulated description
of a multi-layered trans-critical pedagogy that promotes
a democratic and inclusive theory of education couldnt be
more timely. This book is ground breaking in its attempt to
identify pedagogical approaches to the challenges faced in
the profession by the changing role of the architect and is
invaluable for researchers, practitioners, graduate students
and educators in architecture.
Karen Keddy, Ball State University, USA
In this book, design education is dealt with as a paradigm
whose evolutionary processes, underpinning theories,
contents, methods, tools, are questioned and critically
examined. Building on twenty-five years of research and
explorations into design pedagogy in architecture and urban
design, this book authoritatively offers a critical analysis of
a continuously evolving profession, its associated societal
processes and the way in which design education reacts to
their demands. Innovative teaching practices in lecturebased and introductory design courses are identified and
characterized including inquiry-based, active and experiential
learning. These investigations are all interwoven to elucidate
a comprehensive understanding of contemporary design
education in architecture and allied disciplines.

This brilliant and thoroughly researched book successfully

challenges the widely held belief of architectural historians
that Soane did not have a major or significant influence on
his contemporaries or successors. Our view of Soane will thus
be transformed by Bradburys detailed and fresh account of
19th- and 20th-century architecture.
David Watkin, University of Cambridge, UK
Through examinations of internationally-renowned
architects, Bradbury demonstrates that Sir John Soanes
influence has been truly international in the pre-modern era,
reaching throughout the British Isles and beyond to North
America and even colonial Australia. Through his inclusion
of select, detailed case studies, Bradbury contends that
Soanes is a continuing, not negated, legacy in architecture.

Urban Maps

The Unfinished Drawing and Building

of St. Peters, the Vatican

Richard Brook and Nick Dunn, both at Manchester

School of Architecture, UK

Federica Goffi, Carleton University, Canada

This is an important contribution to the architectural and

urban library, which advances the discussion on analyzing
the urban condition in contemporary cities. The book will be
of interest to a wide spectrum of reader types, from artists to
urban planners and from architects to graphic designers.

Instruments of Narrative and Interpretation

in the City

This book is a ground-breaking event in the field and deals

with materials that for some strange and unclear reasons
have been completely overlooked in both the history of
St. Peters and within theories of historic conservation. The
backbone of the book, the analysis of the Tiberio Alfaranos
artifact is very exhaustive and far-reaching in singling out the
cultural interaction between representations and buildings.
The evaluation of Alfaranos unique facture is done with very
sophisticated sensorial procedures and it will be an innovative
contribution to scholarship of visual literacy and its role in the
analyses and assessment of historical conservation. The book
is also novel in the way it is structured and presents research
that falls within a tradition of micro-history as a way to tackle
the central questions regarding the temporality of the built
environment. It also gives historical support to methods of
study and action that can help to break the present bad habits
of mummification that are employed unfortunately when
dealing with the conservation of culturally loaded buildings.

Urban Revolution Now

Henri Lefebvre in Social Research
and Architecture
Edited by Lukasz Stanek, University of Manchester,
UK, Christian Schmid and kos Moravnszky, both at
ETH Zrich, Switzerland
Lefebvres thought has perhaps never been more important
than today as urban insurgencies around the world are
reshaping the politics of planetary urbanization and announce
a new urban revolution. This book is truly a milestone in
actualizing Lefebvre for our contemporary urban condition.

Renaissance heroes and masterpieces are often accepted

wholesale as if their study and celebration has nothing
to do with the period in which they are revered. Because
of this, books that deal with the historiography of the
Renaissance are always welcome additions to the field.
Katherine Wheelers Victorian Perceptions of Renaissance
Architecture is no exception.
Journal of Art Historiography
In the mid-1880s, an influential British architectural journal
published an article characterizing Renaissance architecture
as a corruption of classical architecture. By the turn of the
century, however, the same journal praised the Renaissance
architect Filippo Brunelleschi as the Christopher Columbus
of modern architecture. Relevant for architectural
historians, literary scholars and those in Victorian studies,
this book examines the conflicting late nineteenthcentury characterizations of Renaissance architecture and
reassesses them within the formation of a modern, British
architectural profession.

Under Construction: Logics

of Urbanism in the Gulf Region
Edited by Steffen Wippel, University of Southern
Denmark, Odense, Denmark, Katrin Bromber,
Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO), Berlin, Germany,
Christian Steiner, University of Osnabrck, Germany
and Birgit Krawietz, Freie Universitt Berlin, Germany
Interdisciplinary in approach, this volume explores and
deciphers the symbolic value and iconicity of the built
environment in the Arab Gulf Region, its aesthetics,
language and performative characteristics. It suggests that
recent developments in this region of the world not only
represent a showcase of extraordinary initiatives by which
these desert states have transformed, but also that the
commodification of local traditions acts as an essential
element in the countries effort to design an Arab version of
(hyper-)modernity and to position themselves as a regional
and global archetype, which has frequently been adopted
elsewhere.

This volume is the first to develop Lefebvres concepts

in social research and architecture by focusing on urban
conjunctures in Barcelona, Belgrade, Berlin, Budapest,
Copenhagen, Dhaka, Hong Kong, London, New Orleans,
Nowa Huta, Paris, Toronto, So Paulo, Sarajevo, as well
as in Mexico and Switzerland. With contributions by
historians and theorists of architecture and urbanism,
geographers, sociologists, political and cultural scientists,
Urban Revolution Now reveals the multiplicity of processes
of urbanization and the variety of their patterns and actors
around the globe.

A Guide to the Research Process in Art and Design

The Urban Department Store

in America, 18501930
Louisa Iarocci, University of Washington, USA
In the late nineteenth century, the urban department
store arose as a built artifact and as a social institution
in the United States. While the physical building type is
the foundation of this comprehensive architectural study,
Iarocci reaches beyond the analysis of the brick and mortar
to reconsider how the spaces of selling were culturallyproduced spaces, as well as the product of interrelated
economic, social, technological and aesthetic forces.

VISUAL CULTURE IN EARLY MODERNITY

Series Editor: Allison Levy
A forum for the critical inquiry of the visual arts in the early modern world, Visual Culture in Early Modernity promotes new
models of inquiry and new narratives of early modern art and its history. We welcome proposals for both monographs and
essay collections that consider the cultural production and reception of images and objects. The range of topics covered in
this series includes, but is not limited to, painting, sculpture and architecture as well as material objects, such as domestic
furnishings, religious and/or ritual accessories, costume, scientific/medical apparata, erotica, ephemera and printed matter.
We seek innovative investigations of western and non-western visual culture produced between 1400 and 1800.

The Ethics of Ornament

in Early Modern Naples

Decor and Divinity from the Salons of Paris

to the Missions of Patagonia

Fashioning the Certosa di San Martino

J. Nicholas Napoli, City College of New York,
Spitzer School of Architecture, USA
This book explores the decoration of the Carthusian
monastic complex of San Martino and considers it in relation
to Carthusian identity and institutional ideals. It benefits from
a good deal of new archival material. It will be of particular
interest to specialist scholars on baroque art and architecture,
patronage, and of early modern Naples. Its publication
coincides with a renewed scholarly interest in Naples and also
with a currently fashionable concern with the business of art.

The Spiritual Rococo

Helen Hills, University of York, UK,

and Co-founder of Neapolitan Network

The Carthusian monks at San Martino began a series of

decorative campaigns in the 1580s, transforming their church
into a jewel of marble revetment, painting, and sculpture.
These aesthetic qualities generate a moral conflict: few
religious orders honored the ideals of poverty so ardently yet
decorated so sumptuously. In this, the first English-language
study of a key monument in Naples, Napoli explores this
conflict and how it sought resolution amidst the realities of
early modern Naples, shedding new light on the Neapolitan
baroque, industries of art in the age before capitalism,
and the relation of art, architecture, and ornament.

Gauvin Alexander Bailey, Queens University, Canada

Baileys book expands upon our understanding of rococo art
and architecture in two significant ways. It proposes that there
was a spiritual component to the rococo from its inception,
detectable even in its secular applications. It also reveals
how spirituality enabled rococo design to become a global
phenomenon, ranging beyond France to Germany, Brazil, and
Argentina. This is a stimulating, provocative study that reveals
how much the rococo mattered to eighteenth-century societies.
Michael Yonan, University of Missouri-Columbia, USA
Exploring for the very first time the global reach and spiritual
dimension of Rococo dcor, particularly in France, Central
Europe, Portugal, Brazil, and Spanish South America,
this study investigates the socio-religious motives for the
importation of this style into an ecclesiastical setting and its
commonalities with Enlightenment values, overturning the
clich of Rococo as a frivolous style and acknowledging its
essential modernity.

Old Women and Art in the Early

Modern Italian Domestic Interior
Erin J. Campbell, University of Victoria, Canada
Drawing on a wide range of visual and historical sources, this
study examines the remarkable flowering, largely overlooked
in portraiture scholarship, of portraits of old women in
Northern Italy and especially Bologna during the second
half of the sixteenth century. Erin Campbell argues that
these images of unidentified women provide an opportunity
to present new conceptual frameworks, and question our
assumptions about old age, portraiture, and the domestic
interior.

Vincenzo Scamozzi and the

Chorography of Early Modern
Architecture
Ann Marie Borys, University of Washington, USA
Ann Marie Borys presents northern Italian architect Vincenzo
Scamozzi (15481616) as a traveler and an observer, the first
Western architect to respond to the changing shape of the
world in the Age of Discovery. Pointing out his familiarity
with the expansion of knowledge in both natural history and
geography, she highlights his truly unique contribution: to
make geography and cartography central to the knowledge
of the architect.
