Architecture 2015
The Ashgate architecture list aims to bring you the most fascinating and innovative research on architecture and how it relates to
society, politics, culture and place. We are keen to include titles which turn the focus away from the Western world and you will
find several titles which focus on Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. The Architecture of Edwin Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew,
while contributing to this global vision, also adds to another strand we are particularly keen on expanding volumes which explore
womens role in designing space. We are pleased to be able to offer some major new works which revisit some seminal figures or
works from twentieth century design, including a full English translation and critical analysis of Bruno Tauts The City Crown and
an original study on Pevsners years at the BBC.
One of the most exciting new approaches to the study of architecture can be seen in our series, Design Research in Architecture,
in which the authors both practising architects and academics integrate original design work with cutting-edge theory to
create work which is both insightful, intellectually challenging and aesthetically stunning. No less ground-breaking, we have
several volumes which examine spatial theory as it relates to architecture, such as Urban Revolution Now, The Architecture
of the Illusive Distance, Phenomenologies of the City and The Material Imagination.
We are building up our list of titles on landscape architecture I am particularly excited about the forthcoming Pietro Porcinai and
the Landscape of Modern Italy and we are actively looking to expand this field of publications, as well as other areas in our list
such as interior architecture and conservation. The final volume of Practical Building Conservation: Earth, Brick and Terracotta,
will be published over the summer, completing this remarkable 10-volume set, which has become an essential reference to any
architect or academic working in architectural conservation.

Hawaris Everyday Life
Although the history of the Military Orders has been the

subject of research for a long time, their material legacy
has attracted less attention. In recent years, however, a vast
range of topics concerning the Orders building activities
were studied, primarily with the help of archaeology. This
volume contains ten articles discussing the archaeology
and architecture of buildings erected by the three major
Military Orders in different geographical regions. They cover
most countries of Western Europe and include a number of
important fortifications in the Levant. These studies break
new ground in the investigation of the built fabric of the
Military Orders.
This is a magnum opus, in more than one sense of the term.

An important work, the product of vast research and dedicated
scholarship, Bressanis biographical study is a timely
contribution not only to architectural studies but also to the
field of historical culture in general. Through tracing Violletle-Ducs achievement in relation to the broad transition from
Romanticism to Modernity, Bressani succeeds in bringing out

work with and against. Materials are not only formed by but
also inform the buildings geometries, finishes, and colors.
Mannerist architects figure prominently in this account, also
the great modernists, and many of our contemporaries all of
whom think with, not about, materials. This book helps us see
materials in a new way, and more largely, architecture itself.
This book argues that design drawings should be recognised

as intermediaries, mediating between the world of ideas
and the world of things, spanning the intangible and
tangible. The book argues that this in-between quality
to architectural drawing is essential and that it is critical
to perceive drawings as subtle bodies that hold physical
attributes (e.g. form, proportion, colour), highly evocative, yet
with no matter. Focusing on Islamic geometric architectural
drawings, both historical and contemporary, it draws on key
philosophical and conceptual notions of imagination from
the Islamic tradition as these relate to the creative act. It
also adds to debates on philosophies of the imagination,
linking both Western and Islamic traditions.

Timber
I found the content of the book to be both interesting and very
informative. It certainly made me wonder just how much we
have wasted, in particular, through replacement of windows
where simple professional repair would have been both more
cost effective and would have retained the original features.
It also made me think just how much money we waste on
treatment of timber when if property surveys are carried out
by the right people the solutions can end up far more cost
effective and less destructive to the building fabric.

in portraiture scholarship, of portraits of old women in
