Custom Application Development Via the Internet

Excel, Access, Visio, Word, Visual Basic
Add nationally recognized Excel, Access and MS Office Experts to your team -- with strong business

management backgrounds who are also nationally recognized MS Office consultants and authors.

Pay only for the help you need. To have the same level of expertise at your site, you would need to pay large fees for
recruiting -- or a consultant's travel expenses and daily rate. With On Line Consulting via the Internet, you can receive
attention in small chunks of time, as needed.

Receiving efficient help via the Internet means fewer phone calls and meetings. You can work with the MS Office Expe

Excel Tip and Example

Title: ROI and ROE Performance Measure

Keywords: Return on Investment, Return on Equity, Goal Seek, Management Performance
Description: Worksheet model used to calculate Return on Investment (ROI) and Return on Equity (ROE) that also
provides easy methods of changing input values and seeking a final ROE.

Tip:
You can develop a model of your business with an Excel workbook. This model calculates ROE, ROI, profit
margin and asset turnover. Once the model is developed, you can try various what if scenarios. You can
use Goal Seek functions to solve the model for a desired output (ROE). By adjusting different inputs to the
ROE calculation, you can better understand the financial structure and opportunities facing the business.
Notes like those inserted in cells N13, N15, Q14 and X18 describe methods of increasing ROE.

Guide to the Example:

Enter starting values in column B. Click the reset buttons to show ROE for the input values. Click on the
spinner buttons to change assumptions and use the reset buttons to return to the original values. Enter a
desired ROE in cell M4 and click on the Seek button -- choose which input variable you want to change to
solve for the desired ROE.

examination and reconstruction of system and data processing.

Determine if sufficient chronological information is being

recorded and stored in logs, and it is useable for
reconstruction, if necessary.
Obtain a sample of the log entries, to determine if they

Select a sample of users and inquire whether they are aware of

End-user computing, including spreadsheets and other userdeveloped programs, are documented and regularly reviewed
for processing integrity, including their ability to sort,
summarize and report accurately.

Inquire as to managements knowledge of end-user programs in

use across the company.
Inquire as to the frequency and approaches followed to review
enduser programs for processing integrity, and review a sample

Review

User-developed systems and data are regularly backed up and

stored in a secure area.

Inquire how end-user systems are backed up and where they

are stored.

User-developed systems, such as spreadsheets and other enduser programs, are secured from unauthorized use.

Review the security used to protect unauthorized access to

user-developed systems.
Consider observing a user attempting to gain unauthorized
access to userdeveloped systems.
Inquire how management is able to detect unauthorized access
and what follow-

Access to user-developed systems is restricted to a limited

number of users.

Select a sample of user-developed systems and determine who

has access and if the access is appropriate.

Inputs, processing and outputs from user-developed systems

are independently verified for completeness and accuracy.

Inquire how management verifies the accuracy and

completeness of information processed and reported from
user-developed systems.
Inquire who reviews and approves outputs from user-developed
