At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:


1. Learn the sentence patterns with the modals in the past tense (wouldcould) to express necessity.
2. To practice using the sentence pattern learned to talk about environmental
issues.
ACTIVITY 1: Waste Not, Want Not!
1. Draw students attention to the page on Language in Action.
2. Get all students to predict what the video is about by asking the following
questions: *What do you see in this page?
*What do you think this video is about?
3. Play the Audio-Video DVD. Get students to watch the video.
ACTIVITY 2: Pause and Practise.
4. Play the Audio-Video DVD and pause at the following sentence patterns:
*Paragraph 1, Line 2: They would go out each day to look for food and
share it with one another. *Paragraph 3, Lines 6 and 8: He would gather
large quantities of food, more than he needed for the day and when he
could not finish his food, he would simply throw them away.

Social Issues: Safe and Sound
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Learn sentence patterns for expressing safe and unsafe practices on the
road
2. To practise the sentence patterns related to road safety
ACTIVITY 1: Right or Wrong
1. Draw students attention to the pictures
2. Get students to talk about the pictures by asking the following questions.
*What do you see in Pictures 1, 2,3,4,5,6?
3. Play the Audio-Video DVD. Get students to watch the slides and listen to
the sentence patterns.
ACTIVITY 2: Pause and Practise
1. Play the Audio-Video DVD and pause at the following sentence patterns:
*Ming Leong is cycling in front of a car.
2. Ask the following questions: *What will happen to Ming Leong? *When you
cycle on the road, what must you do?
3. Pause at the sentence patterns that need to be highlighted to the students
and get students to talk about safe and unsafe road practises.
4. Questions asked must allow students to use the sentence patterns in their
answers.
5. Pause after situation 1. Ask the following questions: *What advice would
you give to Ali and Azman? *Where can they play?
6. Pause after Situation 2. Ask the following questions: *What advice would
you give to Ming Leong? *What other safety precautions should Ming
Leong take? *Where else can you cross the road safely?
7. Ensure that all students participate actively. Replay and pause in
necessary.
