The minimum setting voltage to ensure stability is:

And the minimum knee point voltage (EK) of the CT must be:

RELAY SETTING CALCULATION

Ek Calculation formula
As per 7SJ80 relay for High Impedance Diff. protection, the CT knee point emf (Ek) shall meet the following
requirement
EK

The setting voltage USET of the scheme over the differential branch shall be made equal or greater than the
required stability voltage

Calculation of the required fault setting

Considering that the minimum fault current at the busbar is quite high, the desired primary fault sensitivity
Ip,des is chosen at 100 % of the rating of the busbar
Ip,des

3000 A

Setting voltage (Uset)

= 150 V
= 450
C = constant of Metrosil
= 0.25
= Index of Metrosil
Ivar = Current drawn by Metrosil at setting voltage,

Therefore,

Ivar

0.52 x [2 x Uset / C] ^ (1/)

Ivar
Ivar

=
=

0.52 x [2 x 150/450]^(1/0.25)
0.0257 A

Having chosen the primary fault sensitivity Ip,des of the scheme, the secondary setting of the relay Iset can be
calculated as below, where the varistor spill current will be at this stage neglected:

Where

differential protection zone

(3000/3000) - 6 (150/5550) *0.05 - 0

0.992 A

The setting current Iset of the scheme will be then taken:

Iset

RELAY SETTING CALCULATION

Calculation of the required stabilizing resistor

Stabilising resistor Rstab is calculated as

Rstab

(USet/Iset) - (RRelay)

Relay input burden neglected

Rstab

=
=

(150/1)
150.0

The thermal rating of the resistor is calculated:

The continuous power rating of the stabilizing resistor can be chosen as per
Pstab,cont
Pstab,cont

=
=
=

Uset2 / Rstab
(150)^2 / 150
150.00 W

Furthermore, Rstab must have a short time rating large enough to withstand the fault current before the fault
is cleared. Thereby, the rms voltage developed across the stabilizing resistor during maximal prospective
internal fault Urms,f is decisive for the thermal stress of the stabilizing resistor. It is calculated according to
below formula.

Urms,f

=
=

1.3 * { (5550)^3 *150 * ( 63000 / 3000)}^0.25

6262.40 V

The time duration of 0.5 seconds can be typically considered for the stabilizing resistor ( Pstab,0.5s ).
The resulting short-time rating Pstab,0.5s shall be then chosen as per below
=
=
=

Urms,f2 / Rstab
(6262.4)^2 / 150
261451.03 W

Rstab

150.0

Pstab,cont

Resistor chosen (per relay input):

Metrosils Requirement :
With reference to the Metrosil Catalogue the selected Metrosil is 600-A/S1/256 or higher model.
