of the most common types of parallel folds and
cross folds with positioned broadsheets help
facilitate the lead-in to the folding principles.

Further finishing types of folds are executed with either

buckle-plate folders or combination folding machines.
As a rule, buckle-plate folders are composed of up to four
folding stations with two, four or six buckle plates
mounted in the folding units. Combination folding

machines combine the buckle-folding principle with

the knife-folding principle in one folding machine.
As a rule, they are equipped with one buckle-plate folding
station provided with two, four or six buckle plates;
up to three knife-folding units can be attached.

The buckle fold

With the buckle fold, one folding unit consists of one
buckle plate and three folding rollers. The first and the
second folding roller are arranged vertically on top of
each other to convey the incoming folded sheet to the
buckle plate and up to the buckle-plate stop. The leading
sheet edge pushes against the stop and with simultaneous
further transport of the sheet an upsetting wrinkle is
formed in the upsetting space between the three folding
rollers. This wrinkle is picked up by the two counterrotating folding rollers and the fold is formed while the
sheet passes through the rollers.

The knife fold

With the knife fold, the fold is executed by one vertically
movable folding knife and two counterrotating folding
rollers. The folded sheet is conveyed to the sheet stop
and stroke between the folding rollers by the vertically
descending folding knife. Simultaneously, the two
counterrotating folding rollers pick up the folded sheet
and the fold is formed while the sheet passes through
the rollers.

Please make yourself familiar with the symbols used
in the diagrammatic view with example F8-7, 8 pages

Put the broadsheet to be folded in such a way that the
fold lay mark ( ) is visible on the left lower edge. The
broad format length is folded in half first. This step is
carried out with the folding machine in the first buckle
plate of the first folding unit. Turn the left half of the
broadsheet congruent to the right half so that page 3 lies
on page 2 and page 6 lies on page 7. You now have a
folded sheet with four pages.
Secondly, the broad format width is folded in half, too.
This step is carried out with the folding machine either
by the folding knife or by a buckle plate in the second
folding station. This fold is rectangular to the first fold.
Turn the folded sheet in such a way that page 4 lies
congruent to page 5. You now have a folded sheet with
eight pages, called the two-directional cross fold. The
front page of the folding sample is on top, the back side
is page 8.

Folding in practice with the folding catalogue

For daily practice, Heidelberg has combined 81 different
types of folds in one folding catalogue which provides
considerable support to the operator thereby clearly
reducing makeready times for the folding machine.
Upon selection of the desired type of fold and logging
of the sheet measurements, all setting values are
calculated for the folding machine with the software
Compufold Standalone usable for any common PC.
The operator receives a printout of the values needed for
setting the folding machine. If the folding machine is
equipped with the comfort version of the DCT 2000
Digital Folding Machine Control, all setting values of the
folding machine are calculated by this control and
indicated on the displays of the folding stations. If the
folding machine is equipped with automatic buckle
plates, the folding lengths are self-set. The folding
program for special types of folds can be written by the
operator and stored for repeat jobs.
The Finishing Communication System FCS 100
provides integration of the folding machines in a
network and online transmission of setting values and
operational data.
