married then the right to vote.
*The UK followed development of equal rights
for women in other countries.

the equal pay and sex discrimination acts

showed women wanted equal treatment.

rights, many women still do all the housework!

equal rights had to be accepted.
Christians & equal rights for women
*Traditional protestant- St Paul teaches women should not teach or speak in church. *Catholics- Genesis 1 says men & women were created at the same time so are equal... only men can be priests as they represent Jesus at mass. *Modern protestant- Men & women are equal in everything and women can be vicars because Jesus treated women as equals. Islam & equal rights for women in religion
Traditional attitude- different roles because: *Qur'an teaches men should support women *Qur'an teaches men provide for family. Modern attitude- equal rights because: *Qur'an teaches men & women are equal in religion and education. *There were women religious leaders in the early days of Islam. Issues for religion by multi-faith society Bringing up children - Most religions teach that only their religion will lead to a good life after death. Children educated in all faiths may be tempted away from their faith. Conversion - Many religions believe they should convert people because their faith is the true faith. Problems arise as trying to convert people is like discriminating against other faiths. Interfaith marriages - For a religious wedding service, often couples have to be of the same religion. There is the problem of which faith to raise the children. The problems of discrimination & racism Racism =prejudice leading to discrimination. *Racially or religiously prejudiced employers will not give jobs to some races or religions. *Prejudiced landlords will refuse accommodation to certain groups. *Prejudiced teachers will stop certain groups achieving their potential. *Prejudiced police officers will discriminate against certain groups.
The effects of discrimination & racism
*If some groups feel they're being treated unfairly, they will turn against society.
Benefits of living in a multi-ethnic society
*People of different ethnic groups will form relationships and bring more peace.
*Some politicians believe some young black
people turn to crime due to lack of opportunities because of discrimination.
*More progress will happen due to more people
with different ideas.
*Some politicians believe Muslims have been
turning to extreme groups as they feel they have no chance of success due to prejudice. *Racism and discrimination can lead to groups like the BNP stirring up hatred.
*Life is more interesting with a greater variety
of food, music and culture. *A multi-ethnic society helps people to live and work in a world of multi-national companies and economic interdependence.
Government action to promote community
cohesion in the UK *Giving money to groups which are working for community cohesion.
Why community cohesion is important
*Without community cohesion racially/religiously motivated violence can break out.
*Making community cohesion part of the
national curriculum.
*7/7 bombers were British citizens who had
lost their sense of allegiance to the UK
*Passing the Race Relations Act making it
unlawful to discriminate against anyone.
*Lack of C.C. makes it impossible for people to
work together as modern societies need.
*Appointing cabinet ministers and judges etc
from ethnic minorities.
*In countries without C.C. voilence becomes a
way of life.
Why Christians promote racial harmony
*In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus showed all races should love each other as neighbours.
Islam and racial harmony
*The Qur'an teaches God created the whole of humanity from 1 pair of humans. Therefore all races are linked.
*Jesus treated people of all races equally.
*St Paul taught that all races are equal as God created them all.
*Muhammad said that every Muslim was a
brother to every other Muslim so there should be no racism.
*The Christian Church has members form every
race - 70% are non-white.
*Islam has members of most ethnic groups in
most countries of the world. *Muhammad picked a black man as the first 'call to prayer' showing he was not racist.
The UK as a multi-faith society
Britain has had believers in many faiths for centuries. *Protestants and Catholics from the 16th C. *Jews from the 17th century. *1850's - people were free to worship and religion and had equal political rights. *In the 20th C. Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and other religions have settled in the UK
The benefits of a multi faith society
*Learning about other religions can help people to see what they have in common. *Understanding why religions believe what they do may make people think more carefully about their own beliefs. *Religious freedom and understanding will exist , stopping religious conflicts. *May make more people think about religion as they encounter ideas they have not heard before.
