Overview
Course Material
• Main textbook
J. G. Proakis and M. Salehi, “Digital Communications,”
McGraw-Hill (5th Edition, 2008)
• Lecture notes/slides, handouts

Lectures and tutorials define the course contents

3 Main Topics
• Bandlimited AWGN channels and ISI
• Transmission over radio channels
• Spread-spectrum and CDMA

Adv. Digital Communications intro.2 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

Bandlimited AWGN Channels

• Motivation
– Many practical channels can be modeled as bandlimited and linear
– (Linear) signal distortion and ISI
– Equalization often necessary to counteract ISI,
∗ especially in radio transmission

• We will study:
– Basic principles
– Signal design and the Nyquist criterion
– Equalization

Adv. Digital Communications intro.3 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

Digital Radio Transmission

• Motivation
– Radio channels are very important for applications
– Obstacles in radio transmission,
∗ noise, time-variations, signal fading, multi-path, shadowing

• We will study:
– Basic principles
– Models for fading channel
– Modulation and coding for fading channels
– Diversity, multiple antennas

Adv. Digital Communications intro.4 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

Spread-spectrum and CDMA

• Motivation
– Spread-spectrum techniques,
∗ important principle for applications (CDMA, stealth radio,. . . )
– CDMA: Code-Division Multiple Access
∗ The signaling scheme for 3rd generation wireless,
e.g. UMTS/WCDMA (Europe, Japan), CDMA 2000 (USA)
∗ Efficient technique to share resources among several users

• We will study:
– Basic principles
– Spread-spectrum: direct sequence, frequency hopping
– Multiuser communications
– CDMA – principles, methods, multiuser detection

Intended Learning Outcomes
In order to pass the course, you should be able to
• Describe the limiting effects in digital communication systems.
• Explain the basic principles of the transmission techniques.
• Apply the learned transmission techniques to standard problems in
digital communications and to evaluate their performance in an
analytical/mathematical way.
In order to acquire a higher grade, you should also be able to
• Apply the learned transmission techniques to new and advanced
problems, to adapt them appropriately, and to evaluate their
performance under these new conditions analytically.
• Combine different techniques and perform an analysis in an
analytical/mathematical fashion.

Adv. Digital Communications intro.7 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

Lectures
Slides, notes on the board, and small group activities
• Slides: Definitions, results, statements, summaries,. . .
– The slides will constitute a reasonably coherent but not
complete description of the course. . .
– available on the course homepage
• Notes on the board : Important results, derivations, comments to
the slides (to “slow things down”), examples,. . .
– The board notes alone will neither be a coherent nor complete
description. . .
• Small group activities: learning activities for students
– You will solve and discuss small problems with your neighbors
and improve your conceptual understanding.

Adv. Digital Communications intro.8 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

Tutorials

• Tutorial sessions: One tutorial session will follow each lecture

(starting after lecture 2).
– Problem solving demonstration
• Additional material
– Collection of problems will be provided during the course.
– Old exams and solutions (on the web-page).

Adv. Digital Communications intro.9 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

Exam / Bonus Points for Exam
Exam
• Written exam. Duration 5 hours. Allowed aids on exam:
– Handbooks (mathematical handbooks, e.g. Beta)
– Collection of signal processing formulas (Swedish version)
– The textbook and handouts
– Lecture slides
– Calculator

• 5 problems on the exam, each of which can give a maximum of 5

points.

Adv. Digital Communications intro.10 c M. Skoglund, R. Thobaben

2 bonus points for the exam
• 10 short tests will be conducted at the beginning of the lectures 2-11
covering the topics of the previous lecture.

• The tests will be graded with “pass” or “fail”; in order to get

– one bonus point for the final exam, you will have to successfully
pass 6 out of 10 tests.
– two bonus points for the final exam, you will have to successfully
pass 9 out of 10 tests.

• You will benefit from this since you will

– be motivated to start early to go through the lecture material.
– will obtain feedback on your state of knowledge.
– save time when preparing for the exam.
