MOBILE INDUSTRY INTO HIGHS P E E D D ATA A C C E S S

A GPRS data card allows mobile phone users to use high-speed

data services using the platform of 3G networks. The popularity of data
access and transmission has overtaken voice services in some high-end
3G mobile devices. Mobile phone users are increasingly using their
devices to access the Internet or their virtual private network for
business, educational, and personal use. That is why mobile phone
companies as well as Telecom service providers are upgrading their
premier services in order to accommodate this growing demand for
mobile data access.
GPRS data card consists of a PC card type-2, a SIM slot,
companion software CD, and an aerial connector that can be used to
enhance reception of the device. The data card is all a user will need in
order to take advantage of broadband mobile connection. In this way,
dependence on Wi-Fi spots would be minimized.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 10

The down side is coverage of 3G GPRS data access is quite

limited but this could gradually change in a few years. The service is
also expensive because of high demand but with limited technology
provider. As other networks upgrade their GPRS systems, the cost issue
could be solved in a few years also.
GPRS data card systems are flavored into two categories. The
first and the most popular is a standard broadband Internet access,
which could be unlimited with some providers. The access comes with
standard features such as email services, POP3, IMAP, and instant
messaging. The second flavor is mainly accessed by companies because
it provides remote wide area connection using virtual private network.

GPRS DOWNLOAD: SOME USEFUL

PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE GPRS
CONNECTIONS

There are many GPRS-related software products that can be

downloaded from the Internet. These GPRS downloads can enhance
and maximize the functions of mobile phones in data access and
retrieval. Many GPRS downloads are freeware which are included as an
add-on service of Telecom networks. There are also stand-alone
licensed applications that can be purchased easily.
Two of the most popular GPRS applications are SMS
frameworks and Internet services programs. These applications can be
used to configure several traffic schemes that are being used by service
providers. It can also make the interface of PC and mobile phones
really powerful by virtually converting the phone modem into a catchall
data-retrieval server. The data such as SMS, emails, and multi-media
can be organized by the computer using standard database software.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 12

Other GPRS related applications are speed optimizers, traffic

monitors and counters, and junk mail filters. These are also good
programs that can be fully utilized in order to improve the performance
of the mobile systems GPRS connection. Speed enhancers specifically
act on the packet loss occurrences during data transmission. These
types of programs can minimize data loss thus ensuring smooth and
faster connection.
Network usage counter is another useful technology solution for
GPRS connections. This type of application will enable GPRS users to
track their usage in real time to determine the actual expense of their
network traffic. GPRS users are billed per megabits of data sent, so this
kind of program will allow them to budget their airtime and usage
costs.

GPRS EMAIL

GPRS-enabled mobile devices allow users to have an always-on

Internet connection. This also allows them to send and receive email
messages wherever they are. In some countries, the volume of data
transferred over GPRS networks consist mainly of email messages. It
holds the advantage of being able to compose longer messages than
standard SMS features. It also makes users extremely informed
because information can be accessed even though they are mobile.
There are plenty of options to receive mobile email from a
smart phone or GPRSD enabled devices. A user can configure their
mobile phones to download emails directly from their Web mail
servers. This is called Web based email and is probably the most
convenient option for the user. All a user needs to do is to redirect their
private emails on a company server to a Web based email service
provider. In this way, they can access their mails anywhere in the
world.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 14

Another option is through secure WAP access of emails from

their own servers into their mobile devices. Configuration of settings
for this kind of email exchange is usually done by systems
administrators. Therefore, users who want to use their mobile devices
need to give notice to their administrators to allow their GPRS devices
to download their mails from the server.
Finally, the most secure email access that can be configured for
GPRS enabled phones is through access of virtual private networks.
VPN has the ability to securely encrypt messages that passes through
its protocols. However, configuration involves setting up the mobile
device to have access to a virtual private network and the VPN to allow
the execution of message downloads.

15 | GPRS 100 Success Secrets

THE UTILITY OF GPRS ICON

A GPRS icon is an indicator that will be displayed on the screen

of the mobile phone to show whether there is a connection or not. Its
like any other icon or graphic display of the phone and can help users
identify what services or phone functions are working. The GPRS icon
is a small blue triangle that will appear if GPRS coverage is detected.
This means that the phone or mobile gadget is ready for GPRS
connection.
In new models of GPRS enabled devices and other smart
phones, the blue triangle GPRS icon has been replaced by the upper
case letter G. The simplification of the icon was made to allow other
network icons to be identified by letters only. In this case, sometimes
the phone or device might display an upper case letter E, which stands
for Edge. If a phone therefore is GPRS and Edge capable and the
network provider supports both configurations, then these two icons
will be displayed.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 16

However, not all network service providers support Edge. In

this case, the phone falls back on the GPRS connection and the
standard G icon will be displayed on the phone. If both are supported,
the icons will be shown on the phone depending on which connection
will be used.
For some people, the display of GPRS icon helps them to
quickly determine which network configuration to use. However, this is
not the case for everyone. Some find the icons annoying and it muddles
the entire graphical display of their screen. The icon contributes to the
clutter on the screen. That is why some users are just content on seeing
the standard blue triangle GPRS icon above the signal bar to indicate a
GPRS connection.

GPRS MAPS: HELPING MOBILE

U S E R S F I N D T H E I R WAY H O M E

Smart phones and other high-end mobile devices have built in

capability for mapping services utilities. This allows users to track
locations especially when they want to find a place or an establishment.
Some GPRS maps applications can be downloaded from a map portal
service provider. This is not an always-on mapping service because the
user will have to request for a location first before the map service
network provider gives specific configured result for the query. This is
very useful though because through a GPRS connection, downloading a
location-based application mapping service would take only seconds to
generate. So, if a user will need a location track service, all they have to
do is to access a map portal and request for specific tracking. They will
be presented with an accurate graphical display for their map query.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 18

There are some services though that does not need a GPRS
connection to generate a location map. This is applicable for smart
phones or PDAs that have built in utility for GPS or the Global
Positioning System. These devices have GIS capability and can be used
for instant location tracking. Most high-end smart phones have this
capability, which is very useful especially for the highly mobile users.
The ability of the phone to synchronize with the GPS will give users a
real time satellite based triangulation of their position as well as the
location of their requested tracking.
There are applications that can be installed on mobile phones in
order to activate the GPRS or GPS mapping services. Some applications
are provided by mapping service networks and a license would be
needed to activate it. Upgrades would be free but there are some that
require customers to purchase updates for their GPRS maps.

THE BASICS OF GPRS MODEM

SETTINGS

GPRS modem settings have different configuration for each

unique network service provider. So when setting up a new modem
configuration using a GPRS enabled mobile device, it is important to
know the assigned settings of the network. These settings will be
needed by the computer in order to establish a connection to the
Internet.
The GPRS connection of a mobile phone can be used on any
computer to serve as a unique device for Internet and email access. In
fact, there are several ways to install a GPRS based modem on a
computer. The most common and probably the easiest configuration
that can be made are through GPRS via Bluetooth modem set up. This
will require users to have a mobile phone or PDA that are GPRS
enabled. Their computer should also have Bluetooth capability in order
to connect with the mobile device cum modem.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 20

In Windows platform, set-up would be similar to standard

modem configuration. Users need to open their network connections
tab and add GPRS to the network. A wizard will appear to guide users
on the step-by-step process of setting up the modem for this
connection. In this case, the GPRS via Bluetooth connection would
have the phone itself as the modem device for establishing network
connection. Users need to follow each instruction carefully and ensure
that the connections to GPRS and the Bluetooth utility are enabled.
Some specific network configuration such as the dialing rules for the
GPRS and the network provider password must be acquired through
the service provider. After all settings have been configured, the
computer will be able to have full Internet connectivity using GPRS
modem settings.

GPRS MONITOR: HELPING USERS

STRETCH THEIR GPRS BUDGET

A GPRS monitor is a standalone application or software that

has the ability to track and monitor data transfer and bandwidth usage
of GPRS connections. This is a very valuable tool for users who want to
keep their phone bills manageable.
GPRS connection is billed not by the minute but by the amount
of data transmitted over the network. This is usually measured per
megabits of data sent or downloaded by the user. The ability to connect
to an Internet service or a mail server provides convenience and
flexibility to users. However, if the use of GPRS protocols cannot be
monitored, users may be surprised when they phone bills arrived. They
may find out that their GPRS usage costs them significant amounts,
which could impact negatively on their budgets.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 22

To avoid this scenario, software developers have created

applications that are related to GPRS usage monitoring. This kind of
software is commonly termed as GPRS monitor. It can be configured to
show detailed daily data transfers as well as the amount of time
allocated by the network to transmit those data.
Some very good GPRS monitors can also be configured to
enhance the download speed of GPRS connection in order to maximize
the usage costs. A GPRS monitor can be installed on any standard
computer. Almost all will run on different platforms and are device
neutral. This means that the program can be used on any operating
system and mobile device models. There are freeware GPRS monitors
but most are shareware or licensed software that needs to be
purchased.

THE BENEFITS OF USING GPRS

NETWORK CONNECTIONS

GPRS network is a so-called always on mobile connection that

can be used to transmit packets of data over a secure private network.
It usually utilizes the platforms of GSM networks in order to send and
download data on TCP/IP. This is made possible by enabling high-end
mobile devices to sync with a GPRS network. Although there are other
protocols that can be used to access the Internet and private networks,
GPRS holds the advantage of being available on almost all mobile
devices and have wider coverage that other network services.
However, a typical mobile device enabled for GPRS cannot
access outside networks without special protocols or infrastructures.
Network providers assign an IP address to each mobile device. This IP
address can be used to access the GPRS network. In order for the GPRS
network to connect the mobile device to other protocols, it must be
configured to use WAP, WWW, or VPN as routers. In this way, the IP
address of the mobile device will be allowed by to send and receive data
over the Internet or private LAN.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 24

Data transmission over GPRS network has many benefits. First,

GPRS connection can be shared because it is not dedicated to a specific
device or user. This feature will certainly result in more efficient usage
of network facilities, which could save on costs. Second, data
transmissions over GPRS networks are relatively faster usually peaking
at 54 kbps for downloads and 15 kbps for uploads. Actual speed
however maybe affected by the amount of bandwidth shared over the
network.
Finally, GPRS network usage is billed on the amount of data
sent or received and not based on time utilized for connection. This
provides users the ability to monitor their network billing and budget
their communication overhead.

GPRS PCMCIA CARD: ALLOWING

INTERNET ACCESS USING CELL
PHONE TOWERS

A GPRS PCMCIA card functions like a mobile modem device. It

will allow users to utilize the signal transmitted over cellular phone
towers to access the GPRS network and eventually connect to the
Internet. This is a good device for those highly mobile individuals that
need Internet access even on remote areas where other networks
cannot penetrate. As cell phone towers are constructed strategically to
cover even the most remote areas, the PCMCIA card will make it
possible for users to have an always-on connection.
The GPRS PCMCIA card can be installed easily on any mobile
PC equipped with a type 2 PC card slot. It has an internal antenna that
has a tri-band capability allowing for data frequency from 880
megahertz to 1990 megahertz. It is a powerful communication module
that can establish connection even on the thinnest signals.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 26

Accordingly, it is preferred by those business users who

predominantly travel to remote locations. They can only rely on cellular
phone signals for their communications. Voice transmission would not
be a problem in these areas but data transmission would certainly pose
some serious issues. With the use of GPRS PCMCIA card, data
transmission problem could be resolved.
The PCMCIA operates on four download and dual upload
channels using a device class with 10-mode multi slot panel. It can also
support all known coding schemes and systems. Users can get a
maximum data bit rate of 85 kbps for download and 21 kbps for uplink
operations. Standard SMS operations are also supported by the device.
The GPRS PCMCIA card can also interface with any SIM using 3V type
module.

PROBLEMS

The most common GPRS problems that users normally

encounter are connection failures on Internet protocols. Mobile devices
that have built in browsers can be used to connect to Internet
protocols. But some may find their device displaying a Page Not Found
message. On the other hand some smart phone browsers using GPRS
connections may stumble upon an invalid GPRS access or connection.
It is important to note that GPRS connections can only work on
GPRS networks. In order to allow it to access outside protocols,
additional settings may have to be configured on the mobile device. A
page not found message is usually a result of incomplete settings to
access Internet protocols. Normally, mobile gadgets are configured to
access dedicated WAP services and content. Any attempt to establish
connection outside of WAP will normally result to errors in connection.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 28

This can be easily solved by reconfiguring the default settings of

the mobile device. It should be allowed to access any WWW site by
configuring its Internet connection setting. A call to the customer
service help desk of network provider can solve this problem. They can
guide users on how to manually configure their Internet settings. After
doing this step, it normally takes a day or 48 hours for the new setting
to take effect.
Another option is to find the specific configuration of the device
on a GPRS Website. Each mobile device model and network provider
has their own scripting language that can be installed in order for the
GPRS enabled phone to access the Internet. They should follow the
instructions provided for installation and save the settings on their
devices. This will usually solve connections problems using GPRS.

RECEPTION

A GPRS receiver is a small module that has a wide variety of

functions from entertainment to GIS monitoring and tracking. This
small module can be attached to a mobile device in order to activate its
capability to download streaming media or large volume data packets.
There are GPRS receivers also that are stand-alone gadgets that can be
configured statically to accept beamed signals delivered over GPRS
networks.
For high-end mobile devices, the GPRS receiver can be used to
access entertainment channels on either pay or free networks. This will
allow users to watch their favorite shows or events even when they are
traveling or away from home. GPRS receivers provide them with a
virtual pocket based entertainment system. This enhances the mobility
of devices and provides users with an always on channel that can be
accessed anywhere on the globe.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 30

Another common use of GPRS receiver is for research and data

gathering. For this kind of activity, the GPRS receiver is usually a
standalone module that can be set up independent of any mobile
device. These types of GPRS receivers have their own power supply so
they can be installed at places that have no steady power supply. Most
GIS engineers use GPRS receivers to help them track land based
mapping activities. The receivers will be distributed on a wide area and
will be configured to accept data beamed from a satellite imaging
source. The data sent can be downloaded remotely or manually
depending on the specific feature of the GPRS receiver.

GPRS ROAMING: ALLOWING

INTERCONNECTIVITY OF
DIFFERENT GPRS NETWORKS

GPRS roaming capability is the next step in improving the

global data services of GPRS networks. Most GPRS connections today
are using dedicated networks and protocols provided by a network
service provider. These networks assign unique IP address for each
mobile device in order to access Internet protocols. With GPRS
roaming functionality, different GPRS networks can interface with one
another allowing their users to connect to the Internet using not one
but several networks. This will certainly improve the utility of GPRS
enabled mobile devices and can provide superior connectivity for
different network subscribers.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 32

GPRS roaming has been instituted as a new standard for

interconnectivity by the GSM association. Specifically, it was the
International Roaming Expert Group (IREG) that laid down the
recommendation and the foundation protocol for allowing different
networks to interconnect their GPRS subscribers for a uniform Internet
service provision. This is made possible through the deployment of a
centralized IP routing for the GPRS networks. It can serve as the
gateway that will transmit data sent over GPRS on any available
protocols within the network.
The service has been implemented globally and has shown
significant success in making linkages of different GPRS networks. The
service actually has been in place in several countries that have
advanced infrastructure for GPS connectivity and roaming facility.
Aside from the leading mobile phone providers, other players are now
following the recommendations of IREG in providing GPRS
interconnectivity across different service providers. This will enhance
ease of use and will improve general Internet connections of mobile
devices.

CONNECTING TO INTERNET

PROTOCOLS

GPRS is one of the most useful data transmission services today

that is widely used throughout the world. In fact, almost all mobile
devices on the GSM network that have the capability to process data
are GPRS enabled. GPRS services allow users to have an always on
connection to Internet protocols and are being utilized as a complete
solution for several commercial applications. Although connectivity
over GPRS networks cannot match the speed of broadband
connections, it provides users with Internet connection wherever they
are. As long as there is an existing network signal for voice protocols,
GPRS connectivity will work.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 34

The standard throughput capability of GPRS networks has 50

kbps speed. This is comparable to a standard dial-up connection. The
somewhat slow connection is compensated by advanced features that
are embedded on the data services such as colorful interface on Web
browsing and email and the ability to receive streaming media. All
these functionalities are made possible just by using a small mobile
gadget.
The packet switched capability of GPRS networks allows
multiple users to share bandwidth. Thats because GPRS only opens
data transmission channels whenever it is being used. When a user is
not sending or receiving data, the channel can be shared across
networks thus enhancing efficiency of network use. Through this
system of packet switching, users of GPRS networks are also billed not
on the length of time that they are logged on the network but on the
amount of data that are sent through the channel.

35 | GPRS 100 Success Secrets

G P R S S E T U P : I M P O RTA N T F I R S T
STEPS BEFORE CONNECTING TO A
GPRS NETWORK

Different network providers have different GPRS setup

configuration for mobile devices. Thats because there are different
network settings that should be tweaked before a specific GPRS
network configuration will kick in. So, this means for every mobile
device and network service providers, there are also different sets of
procedures involved for setting up GPRS connectivity.
Normally, users should contact their network service providers
for instructions on how to configure their unique GPRS setup. This will
involve simple procedures and only takes several minutes of
configuration. The settings then must be saved on the mobile device.
On the other hand, once the GPRS settings have been sent to the
network service provider, users will receive a message confirming
successful configuration. The GPRS functionality then can be used after
a while.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 36

GPRS connections of mobile devices can also be synchronized

on any computer. There is also a separate configuration for this. Some
devices have a companion installation CD that can be run automatically
on computers. The software will install itself or it can be installed
manually with the help of an installation wizard. Either way, GPRS
setup on PC synchronization is a touch and go operation. It involves
uncomplicated procedures that can be easily followed by anyone who

Having a GPRS signal will allow mobile users to send and

receive data over Internet protocols. GPRS signals are indicated on the
screen of mobile devices. In the past, the strength of GPRS signal can
be shown on the blue icon with several bars. A four bar signal indicates
strong reception while a single bar could mean a very weak signal
strength. This thin signal could result to some loss in data packets or
intermittent connections that can disrupt the flow of data such as
streaming media or audio.
GPRS signal can be acquired through either cellular towers or a
satellite uplink infrastructure of the network service provider. This
makes GPRS enable devices highly mobile and flexible. Data
communication can take place as long as there is an existing signal that
is capable of allowing GPRS connections. That is why GPRS
connectivity is highly favored by highly mobile individuals who need an
always on connection for their data transmission needs.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 38

To determine the actual strength of GPRS signal, software

developers created a signal calculator or monitor. Users can use this
software to compare the signal of their GPRS enable devices to other
connections such as DSL and dial up. The signal calculator software
can also be configured to enhance signal strength by extending the
reception capability of the device. Users however cannot change the
general throughput of GPRS signal and are stuck with what the
network service providers can give. Signal strength is really dependent
on location, weather, and the ability of the device to optimize signal
reception.

GPRS SIM: OFFERING

A LT E R N AT I V E S F O R G P R S

A GPRS prepaid SIM card is an option that can be used by

travelers who do not want to access GPRS roaming. Another option is
the use of Wi-Fi hotspots but this is disadvantageous for mobile
individuals that need constant connection anywhere. A GPRS enable
SIM card could be more beneficial especially if the location of users is
relatively remote. This is especially true for users that do not have the
time to look for a hot spot or for those that are unwilling to pay the stiff
price of roaming capability on other countries.
A new GPRS SIM can be fully integrated into an old phone.
Sometimes configuration is automatic. This means that when a user
inserts a new GPRS enabled SIM, it will instantly search for a GPRS
signal provided by a network service provider. However, there are cases
when manual configuration may be needed in order for the GPRS
connection to work.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 40

Using prepaid GPRS SIM is also cost effective. Mobile phone

users can take advantage of different offers that offer low rates per
megabits of data sent. With the increasing competition in the GPRS
market, many network service providers are offering cheap rates for
their GPRS connectivity. There are also some mobile service providers
that offer a flat rate usage for GPRS connection. This is very rare
though because GPRS connectivity is almost always billed on the
amount of data transmitted over the GPRS services. So, before GPRS
users start their travel, they must check with their service networks
about several options pertaining to GPRS SIM in other places.

GPRS SMS: HELPING LOWER THE

COST OF SMS SERVICES

SMS is a major service provided by cellular networks. This

facility allows mobile phone users to communicate with anyone in real
time. However the cost a message sent on international networks is too
high compared to a message sent locally. That is why some are using
SMS over GPRS to lower the cost of international text messaging.
There are companies today that offer international SMS service
over GPRS networks at a cost 80% lower than standard SMS rates. This
involves downloading a client application that can process SMS and
deliver the message to the Inbox of intended recipient. However, only
GPRS enabled mobile phones can take advantage of this service.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 42

This is a good option for mobile users that have contacts in

other countries. They can send and receive text messages in real time at
a fraction of the cost offered by network providers. It is also ideal for
those who are constantly traveling and are using SMS as a primary
mode of instant communication. It is a great budget saving feature with
the same quality of service that can be acquired through standard
channels.
Another option that is being used by SMS users is through rerouting services. This service can be made available even for non GPRS
enabled devices. It involves getting a local number that can be used to
send and receive text messages. So users will not have to dial an
international number to send SMS. They can send the message using a
local number thus the charges are lower.

Users can use different GPRS software that can enhance and
improve the functions of their GPRS connections as well as their
mobile devices. Applications for GPRS related utilities include data
monitors and calculators to SMS framework servers and scripting
packages for multimedia message and other heavy data types. The most
commonly used applications also include a speed optimizer for GPRS
connections.
GPRS software for network traffic calculations are utilized to
keep an accurate record of GPRS usage. Because GPRS connectivity is
billed based on the amount of data sent over the network, the traffic
calculator can show the actual amount that has been used by users on a
daily basis. The software also comes with a matrix of rates that are
being charged by different service providers for GPRS usage. Users
therefore can effectively manage their consumption and regulate usage
in order to control their phone bills.

includes applications that can efficiently maximize SMS and other data
traffic. This involves the use Web-based servers that can be connected
on the mobile device using GPRS connection. In this way, power

without a glitch.
There are many GPRS related applications that can be
downloaded directly from the Internet. These are free programs that do
not need license for activation. Some, however, are licensed
applications that can be downloaded as shareware; however the license
should be purchased in order to use its full features.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G G P R S S P E E D :
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS

GPRS speed is primarily dependent on the amount of traffic

that is passing through the network. Thats because GPRS connections
use a data packet switched connectivity that shares bandwidth with
other users of the network. So, in simple terms, when the network is
congested, users will get slow speed GPRS connections. However, when
the network is devoid of traffic or there is only minimum number of
users sharing the bandwidth, then GPRS connection could be a lot
faster.
In theory, users can get GPRS speed of 107 kbps. This is quite
fast but this is in theory only. This assumes that the network will
provide the full time slot for the user thus giving all the bandwidth
allocation. This is not the case however because network providers only
provide 4 time slots for data and 4 slots for voice. This is to ensure
continued voice services in conjunction with data transmission.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 46

So, with full 4 data slots for GPRS, users can ideally get 53 to 54
kbps of throughput rate. However, as GPRS is used heavily during the
day, bandwidth allocation could only reach 1 data slot. So, a user can
have a maximum GPRS speed of 32 kbps on a typical work day.
GPRS speed is similar to dial up Internet connection. It could
be slower on very heavy traffic network connections. However, users
can still get the benefit of an always on connection whenever or
wherever they are. They can easily send and receive emails and other
data even when they are on remote locations.

DETERMINE GPRS SPEEDS

GPRS speeds are configured by network service providers based

on two main factors. First is the method of coding mechanism involved
during data transmission. The other factor is the time slot allocated by
the networks for GPRS connections.
GPRS speeds for data packet transmission are also called data
rate. Data rates are the only protocol being used by network service
providers for transmission using coding schemes. The minimum
throughput for data coding schemes is 9 to 10 kbps. This is the general
GPRS speeds that a user can experience. For time slot allocation, the
maximum GPRS speeds should be 107 kbps. In reality however, users
may only get GPRS speeds of up to 36 kbps. This is because the
bandwidth of networks is shared between GPRS and voice services.
And the GPRS slot is also shared among many network users. So, there
would be a significant reduction in GPRS speeds as the network gets
congested.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 48

Users can experience faster connection of faster throughput of

GPRS speeds if they transmit data during off peak hours. Usually this is
in the wee hours of the morning local time. During peak hours, the
GPRS speed allocation can experience slow connection especially if lots
of users are transmitting heavy volumes of data packets over the
network.
In essence, GPRS speeds are mainly determined by the amount
of traffic that is passing through the networks. Speeds my go up or
down based on this traffic. The upside is that users can still utilize basic
GPRS connections even on slow speeds. They can still receive emails
and send data or browse the Internet.

The GPRS tariff is essentially the charges that users need to pay
for using the services of GPRS networks. Most tariffs are bundled
packages, which mean users can take advantage of several good offers
of network service providers. Basically the tariff structure for GPRS
services consists of activation charges, monthly rental, and usage fees.
There are bundled free extras that are included in these charges, which
serve as promotion of network service providers.
However, there are good GPRS tariff package that can found
which offer usage only charges. This means that users can browse the
Web or stay connected on the Internet for as long as they want and still
pay zero charges. The network will only charge users if they start
downloading from the site. Users will also have to pay the networks if
they transmit data using GPRS.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 50

Tariffs are usually charged based on the amount of data sent or

received by users. Some network service providers charge per megabyte
of traffic while others have specific allocations that will be computed at
the end of a billing period. This kind of offer is ideal for those who send
and receive relatively small packets of data. Users who are also
interested in just browsing the Web can also take advantage of this
kind of offer. They can get unlimited browsing while paying minimum
amounts for the amounts of data that they send or receive each billing
period. For heavy users, the tariff scheme with monthly rental is ideal.
Thats because these networks usually provide free data transmission
charges for their users.

TRACKING WORKS

GPRS tracking services can be used to accurately pinpoint the

location of a mobile device configured for tracking. The system works
using a GPS configuration that can be accessed by simply sending a
message to a service provider to ping the mobile phone of another user.
However, both mobile phones should be configured for the tracking
services and both owners must opt in for it.
GPRS tracking is ideal for parents who want to know the exact
location of their children without calling them. All they have to do is to
ping the mobile device of their children and they will be presented with
a map that indicates the exact location of the pinged device. Accuracy
of pings is within 500 meter radius and the result provides real time
tracking.
Of course there are charges both for pinging a mobile device
and for receiving the map locator. But these charges can be
compensated by the added security of knowing the exact location of
another user, especially children.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 52

There are privacy considerations for this type of GPRS service.

GPRS tracking is criticized by some on grounds of invasion of privacy.
However, GPRS tracking service providers allow users to turn off the

KEEPING IN SYNC: THE UNION OF

PSP AND GPRS

If you own a handheld gaming unit such as a PSP or a

WHY SETTING UP GPRS MUST BE A

PRIORITY

There are many opportunities for the average employee to

connect to the Internet in order to get his or her work done, but there
really is no harm in being connected in more ways than one. This in
fact holds especially true for users of GPRS. When you have your
mobile phone with you, it is like having a gateway to the World Wide
Web all the time you can get yourself connected anytime you wish,
for as long as you want or for as long as your budget permits. This is
why it should be an absolute essential thing for one to attend to setting
up GPRS on ones phone. Why? There are innumerable reasons, but
due to space constraint we shall only highlight the most important
ones.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 76

For one thing, the ability to stay connected all the time does
very well in an emergency. For example you are stuck in traffic and
your boss suddenly rings you to tell you that he has sent a revised copy
of the document, which you are supposed to present in merely a few
hours. With GPRS, no traffic can prevent you from accessing your
documents at once.
Imagine being stuck in a small town with virtually no
connectivity options absolutely essential for a young man to get in
touch with friends and family. Accessing mails via GPRS on the mobile
phone ensures that he gets to be updated with all the important news
about the people he cares about. Or perhaps you need to access the
Internet for whatever purpose, and you find yourself in a foreign land
with no idea where and how to ask for directions to an Internet shop.
No problem here, as you simply have to whip out your phone and with
one press of a button, you will be connected in an instant.

EASY SETUP OF GPRS

Even though the world is connected in amazing ways,

sometimes you still cannot discount the fact that there will be places
and there will be occasions wherein connectivity might be limited or
nonexistent. This is especially true in the case of backwater places and
those who still have not been able to adapt to the changing times
perhaps willingly or unwillingly.
And if you happen to find yourself somewhat stuck in such a
place, in dire need of the Internet and other means of communication,
then there is but one solution in which you will be able to satiate your
need to stay connected. That solution is to tap into the Internet by way
of mobile phone connectivity and the use of general radio packet
service, or GPRS. As such, if you have a mobile phone then you really
ought to get connected and stay connected in order to do your work.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 78

To set up your GPRS you will of course need a handset that is

GPRS enabled in order to get connected to the Internet. You will then
have to connect your mobile phone to your laptop by using either of
two means: a data cable wire or by using a Bluetooth connection. To
establish a dial up connection, you will need to select the handset
modem option on your phone and then connect. You may choose to
leave the option fields of username and password, filling it up is not
necessary. The dialup number comes next a bit challenging for some,
actually. To do this, you will use the number prefix 99 and a series of
numbers that have been assigned to your mobile number. Connect
these two together and you will be cruising the Internet in no time!

THE TIME IS NOW: THE AGE OF

SMART PHONES AND GPRS

In this day and age, communication has taken a move from the
backseat to the biggest burner on the stove. This is because many
people have realized that the power of staying connected is a lot more
powerful than it initially seemed to be. As such, a lot of things that are
related to technology have changed and adapted in order to make
communication a lot easier especially when it comes to mobile
communication.
Take a look around and you will notice that a lot of people have
bigger-than-usual phones with them phones that are actually like
mini computers that fit in the palm of ones hand. These gizmos are
what you call smart phones. Just like the first term in the compound
word, smart phones are indeed a whole lot more intelligent compared
to ordinary mobile phones.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 80

This is because they also have the capability to access the

Internet by way of general packet radio service or GPRS. This service
has been a popular addition to many smart phones nowadays, which is
why it comes as no surprise as to how difficult it is sometimes to choose
a particular unit from a slew of offerings.
Smart phones with GPRS offer so much more than connectivity
to the World Wide Web. GPRS allows the user to download and save
files and access them later, or transfer to the laptop. It allows the user
to keep track of information and edit information as necessary. And
since these smart phones are indeed mini computers in their own right,
it only takes a couple of button presses in order to access the software
to construct any form of digital media text, video, audio and upload
it on the Web or send it to someones email. And all of this in palm of
your hand.

If you are a mobile phone user and you find yourself with the
need to stay connected to the Internet (aside from doing other
important, technology-related tasks, that is), then the best choice of
handsets for you would be the ones that are offered by mobile phone
giant Sony Ericsson.
Sony Ericsson has been around for quite some time, and over
the last two decades has always been a market leader in terms of
innovation. With the introduction of general packet radio service this
decade, Sony Ericsson jumped the gun by being able to come up with a
mobile phone that does not just allow you to stay connected, but also to
do a lot of other things on your mobile phone in the same way that you
would on your computer.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 82

Since GPRS or general packet radio service is a must-use

service, Sony Ericsson phones have made it a point to streamline your
GPRS experience and make it a much more efficient and meaningful
one. While many critics have said that the mobile phone giants
revolutionary offering of the Sony Ericsson P800 mobile phone, no
other company had yet to come up with a unit that could do battle head
to head with the P800. As such, it came as no surprise that the
company was able to secure many fans for its mobile phone with
amazing GPRS experience. Sure, a lot of other units offered the same
service but on crappy screens and barely readable LCD displays.
Compared to the P800, those other units are nothing short of
disastrous.

Are you a fan of smart phones and mobile devices that help you
stay connected almost all the time? Remember that as fun it is to stay
connected and access the Internet whenever you wish, it can also be
quite costly especially if you are overseas where the rates may be
different and most of the time can be a wee bit higher. So it always pays
to be aware of your data usage when accessing the Internet via GPRS in
order not to rack up really astronomical data charges that might leave
you a couple thousand dollars poorer even if you have a pay as you go

To work with this service wisely, remember to only turn it on
when you need it especially when it comes to accessing information
using its other features such as automatic email checking. This feature

UMTS. What you might not be a bit more knowledgeable about,
however, is the fact that these two are intrinsically linked and, when
combined or put together, will give you a technological experience that
is nothing short of marvelous. These two technologies of GPRS and

is the pioneer in digital cellular connectivity, which is used by many
people all over the world. A little bit of trivia: GSM is very predominant
in both Europe and Asia and is also the leading standard in the entire
world when it comes to digital wireless technology or communication.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 98

The dynamic duo of GPRS and UMTS is what is usually termed

as the packet core, which utilizes two main network elements: GGSN
and SGSN. IN GGSN or gateway GPRS support node, mobile cell phone
owners can access the PDN or public data network using private and
specified Internet protocol networks. This function is the product of
Cisco software and runs on a router. The latter, which is serving GPRS
support node or SGSN is able to connect your RAN or radio access
network onto the GPRS and the UMTS core as well as tunnels in order
to have your data sent to as well as receive the different information
coming from mobile stations elsewhere.

SHEDDING LIGHT ON USB GPRS

The great thing about technology is the fact that you can create
various connections where initially there were none. In the likes of
general packet radio service or GPRS, there is now a way to incorporate
the universal serial bus or USB connectivity option to it by way of the
USB GPRS modem. When you use a USB GPRS modem, you are
utilizing a what you can call terminal-like interface of the USB 2.0
version or the ones that came later, as well as different data formats
and both external antennas and RFC 1144. These modems can also be
added in the card if you are using a laptop or via an external USB
device, similar to a mouse in shape and the size.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 100

This USB GPRS modem may also serve the bearer of short
messaging system, otherwise known as text messaging. If the short
message is sent via general packet radio service, there will be a
transmission speed of SMS of roughly thirty SMS messages every
minute that one can actually achieve. This is definitely a lot faster
compared to using ordinary short messaging which is sent over GMS
system that only has a very low SMS transmission speed of around six
or maybe ten messages each minute. The USB GPRS also has transfer
speeds that will depend on the different channels that are used for
encoding. There is also a quite robust one, which is also fast, that runs
on a coding scheme of CS-4 and is quite near a BTS or a base
transceiver system

can only access the Internet using your GPRS enabled mobile phone.
While this is all well and good, it is undeniably limited and for someone
who wants to make the most out of the service, it falls a bit short of its
potential.
But thanks to advances in technology, you can now make this a
very easy way to stay connected and have the full productivity options
of your own personal laptop computer. There are now a lot of GPRS
modems flooding the market today, and their main selling point would
be the fact that their connectivity option is that of a universal serial
bus, or a USB.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 102

There are many things out on the market with a USB port,
which comes as no surprise as to the fact that the GPRS modem also

your laptop computer. There are of course, different transfer speeds for
the channel-dependent encoding system, and such will also be affected
by the type of mobile phone carrier you have and the plan you wish to
avail. Usually, the ones with faster kbps speed are those that belong to
the most expensive plans, but for budget users you also have pretty
impressive data transfer speeds if you are a bit financially constrained.

GPRS General Packet Radio Service is a technology

supporting high speed and efficient data transmission by means of
mobile telephone and at the same time receiving and making calls
simultaneously as well as sending SMSmessages. GPRS is a radically
new approach to data transmission in GSMnetworks based on
packages switching. The GPRS offers many services to its subscribers.
One of them is the opportunity to get Internet connection anywhere
and anytime.
To get an Internet connection using GPRS service, the
subscriber should have an available mobile telephone, which has a
GPRS connection and a laptop. Sometimes depending on the network
being used, a subscriber can get a connection speed up to 50 Kbits per
second.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 110

What are the advantages of GPRS Internet?

GPRS has many advantages. One of them is that the subscriber
is assured of high-speed connection to the Internet. Moreover, once he
is connected he is also assured that he will stay online. Every time he
needs to send or receive data, he doesnt have to call remote access
server because GPRS has a handset connected to the IP-network.
Secondly, GPRS Internet has fast data transmission, which is
four times more than the GSM.
Third, the subscriber has the choice to pay only for the total
volume of data that was received and sent. Thus, he has no worries
even if he reads the Internet pages for a long time.
And these are just a few of the advantages of having GPRS
Internet. Rest assured, subscribers have plenty to gain through GPRS

a GPRS or General Packet Radio Service technology. GPRS is the
extension of GSM, the former being packet-switched and the latter is
circuit-switched. GPRS has higher data transmission speed that GSM
modem.
Mobile Phone as a GPRS Modem?
In general, mobile phones can be converted into a GPRS
modem. However, GPRS modem is more recommended for use with a
computer to be able to send and receive messages. Why is that? Mobile
phones have limitations in comparison with GPRS modems.
First, some mobile phone models cannot be utilized to work
with

computers

and

handle

concatenated

SMS

message.

Concatenated is defined as an SMS message, which is more than 140

bytes. What actually happens is that when a sender sends a
concatenated SMS message to a mobile phone, the messages are made
into parts and then put together when the recipient receives it. This
should not be the case.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 112

Second, mobile phones models do not receive MMS messages.

Third, mobile phones do not have some AT commands, which
are command and value parameters. Some mobile phones do not
support the sending of SMS in text mode due to lack of AT commands
and turns them into error messages. GPRS modems have more
complete AT commands.
Fourth, SMS messaging applications have to be used 24 hours a
day. Since mobile phones have to be recharged this means that for SMS
messaging applications to work, the mobile phone should always be
recharged. This can be a big inconvenience for the user.
With the advantages of GPRS modem over mobile phones, it is
easy to make a choice.

of its fast process of sending and receiving data. Although 2G phones
are good in terms of voice calls, they cannot compete with GPRS
phones in terms of transferring data.
What are the advantages of GPRS?
GPRS connection works at higher speed at an average of 32 to

What are the Classes of GPRS Phones?

The class of a GPRS phone is important because a class
determines the speed of which data is transferred. The class refers then
to the timeslots available for upload and download. The greater the
number of slots, the better because timeslots determine how fast the
data is transferred.
It must be remembered that GPRS transmits data in packets.
Therefore, timeslots are not used all the time but shared by all the
users. This increases the data capacity of the network. Aside from this,
the users pay less because they are charged only from the quantity of
data transmitted and not the time you spent reading in the Internet.
There are many advantages in using a GPRS phones because a

3 GPRS SETTINGS ESSENTIALS

General Packet Radio Service or GPRS provides a vast

communication services for many users. Included to these services are
wireless application protocol access, multimedia messaging services,
short message services, and Internet connection like sending emails
and accessing the World Wide Web. The GPRS has replaced the slow
dial-up access for mobile phones since GPRS gives faster browsing of
different Internet sites, email, and access to online services. However,
before the user can enjoy any GPRS services, he needs first to set the 3
GPRS essentials, which are the GPRS APN, the user ID, and password.
All these should be set correctly before the user can fully use the GPRS
services.
The GPRS APN or access point node is the thing used by the
GPRS for its connection. This may still vary depending on the users
mobile phone operator since they commonly have different access
points used. The user needs to pick the correct APN for his specific
mobile phone or the GPRS technology will not work. There are separate
APNs used for various GPRS services like the WAP access point,
Internet access point, and MMS access point.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 152

Moreover, the user ID is the unique identification for a certain

mobile phone and its mobile number. Mostly, the GPRS settings need
to know the mobile phone model and its number in order to create a
unique identification for the user. This is called as the user ID. In
addition to the user ID is the password, which may be set by the user or
by the operator.
The 3 GPRS settings essentials can be acquired online or can be
set with the help of the mobile phone operator. This highly depends on
the network provider used by the users mobile phone.

HOW TO ENABLE GPRS IN MOBILE

PHONES

GPRS is the protocol that allows data transfers over the mobile
phone network. It offers an always on type of data connection to GSM
mobile phones.
GPRS replaced the dial-up access for mobile phones, which
pilots to faster browsing and access to online services. However, GPRS
does not connect by using the phone number, rather it uses the Access
Point Node or APN. Because of this, the user does not have to pay for
the duration of his online connection but for the cost of data.
GPRS is capable of transmitting data to the mobile phones at a
high speed. This technology also allows easy and fast access to Wireless
Application Protocol or WAP sites. WAP is another mobile technology
that allows phone access to Internet sites. WAP sites are sites in the
Internet designed to fit the dimensions of the texts and graphics to the
screens of mobile phones. The combination of WAP and GPRS provides
the convenience of easy access to weather, sports, news, and
entertainment right on the mobile phones.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 154

To enable the WAP GPRS, the user must contact the mobile

more SIM Card by simply making an arrangement with his Service
Provider. Or if not, grant his SIM Card with numbers of APN.
GPRS APN normally comes in two types: the common WAP
APN, and the WEB APN or Internet. The first type is capable to allow
access to the default content of WAP or the walled garden of the
operator. The latter type on the other hand is capable to allow access to
all of the content.
Normally, the WAP APN filters the content of the non-WAP
APN by volume, traffic, and ports. However, the WEB or Internet APN
is often unfiltered and normally the operator will charge an extra tax
for it. Handhelds, smartphones, and laptop usually needs to use the
Web APN or Internet whenever using applications if not an HTML
browser.

THREE GPRS CLASSES OF MOBILE

P H O N E C A PA B I L I T Y

Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM uses

various types of communication services like GPRS or general packet
radio service. With GPRS, GSM mobile phones can have services like
WAP, SMS, MMS, and Internet communication like sending emails or
accessing the World Wide Web. However, the capabilities of GPRS may
also differ depending on the mobile phone class. There are three GPRS
classes used for mobile phone capabilities which may be summarized
as Class A, Class B, and Class C.
In Class A mobile phones, the GPRS can be connected to the
different GSM and GPRS services simultaneously. Meaning, the mobile
phone user does not need to turn off one service in order to use the
other. He can use the GSM services while using the GPRS capabilities.
Class A is the most advanced of the three GPRS classes.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 158

Meanwhile, the Class B allows connecting to both the GSM

services and GPRS service, but only one at a time. Users of Class B are
enabled to receive voice calls or send and receive SMS messages while
having the GPRS connection. The GPRS is only suspended when a
voice call or SMS arrives and automatically resumes after the SMS or
voice call session ended. This is said to be the most commonly used of
three classes.
Moreover, the Class C mobile phones can be attached to either
GSM or GPRS service, only one at a time. But unlike in Class B, the
user needs to manually switch between services in order to use the
other with the Class C. All these three GPRS classes are indeed useful in
their own unique ways and choosing among these is just up to the user
while considering his needs for a GPRS and GSM service.

3G or third generation and GPRS or General Packet Radio

Services are two of the most widely used communication services for
mobile phones. Both these technologies are helpful for staying
connected to the World Wide Web while allowing more specific
capabilities like video calls, sending email, and voice telephony. But the
3G and GPRS will be of better use if there is the data card. More
specifically called as the 3G GPRS data card, this hardware device is a
great aid for users who want to access the Internet with their laptops or
desktops through using their mobile phone networks.
There are many benefits one can get through the 3G GPRS data
card. With this, user will not need a connection cable, infra-red, or a
fixed line just to stay connected or access the Internet. Using the
hardware device and installing the needed software for the device,
anyone can now have an access to the Internet, send email, or browse
sites through the GPRS and 3G technologies.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 160

The use of 3G GPRS data card is reliable and fast. Software

devices are also easy to install and fast data transfer is possible with the
3G and GPRS. 3G GPRS data card is very ideal for people who want to
travel but still want to get in touch with their important emails and
contacts.
Using the 3G GPRS data card just needs a laptop or desktop
computer, the data card device itself, 3G SIM, and some essential
software. Using the data card is simple. The user needs to place his SIM
card inside the 3G GPRS data card, load the essential software, and
surf the net. Some 3G GPRS data card may require other processes. But
all of these 3G GPRS data cards are definitely helpful for anyone who
always wants to stay connected wherever they are.

GPRS (or General Packet Radio Service) is the standard

protocol for the wireless communication systems that runs at 115 Kb
per second. GPRS enables data communication through the packetswitched technology. GPRS is also described as the 2.5G technology.
GPRS as packet-switch protocol is composed of a digital
structure based on the TDMA technique or Time Division Multiple
Access technique. GPRS is defined for various Web applications such as
in GSM networks. There are different coding systems that are used in
developing data rate. This means that the enhanced rate can move from
9 Kb to 150 Kb per second for every user. The GSM network is the one
providing the security features of GPRS.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 162

The primary function of GPRS is to allow short data bursts

between the phone and the network like that of the Internet. In
specialized services made compatible with short transmissions, there is
lesser cost for connectivity compared to constant connection. In theory,
GPRS is not capable of sending from the portable terminal through a
set of continuous channel because it transmits or receives data by
packets. Because of this, the radio spectrum available is efficiently
used.
The principal benefit of GPRS is its lower cost. There is no dialup connection required in order to access data. Compared to the SMS
or Short Messaging Service provided by GSM, GPRS provides cheaper
mobile data services. With the use of GPRS, the user only pays for the
cost of the information he downloaded not the period of his
connection. General Packet Radio Service is indeed one of the
achievements in mobile data transmission.

DEFINING GPRS ACCESS POINT

The GPRS access point can basically mean three things. First,
this refers to an Internet network device wherein a mobile phone can
be connected. Second, this includes a set of settings employed for the
connection. Third, this is an accurate option in a mobile phones set of
settings. With this case, one may use his phone as a modem for GPRS
to acquire wireless Internet Access. To do this, one must get an
equivalent Access Point Address. The access point address is normally
arranged in the format of Uniform Resource Locator (URL). In many
cases though, these settings are pre-installed or if not these be obtained
from the cellular network operator.
However, the users should note that some of the offered
program does not include any fixed GPRS modem drivers. Some
program does not also provide functionality on Internet access. Here,
one can simply use the default system browser including the drivers
given by the manufacturer of the phone.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 164

Now, GPRS access point can be employed in a DNS inquiry to a

personal DNS network. This procedure is called as the APN resolution,
through this procedure the GGSNs IP address can be presented, which
vitally provide the access point. Then after, a PDP context can already
be activated.
In some instances though, a problem may arise in using GPRS
access point. For example, there are some programs wherein the GPRS
access point is already specified in the settings file to apply for
connection. But there will come a time wherein the APN ID may no
longer contain similar information anymore; hence, the connection
setting can never be completed. Once this happen, one needs to obtain
the right code to resolve the problem. The use of other software is also
possible to completely change the setting of the GPRS access.

According to Nokia, the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

broadband wireless is not really as fast as people expected. European
operators have already set the date as to when they will introduce
GPRS broadband wireless data services. This is presumed to be
introduced just before the year end. Unfortunately, the output failed to
reach what was originally expected. For starters, GPRS appears to be
slower than what they have actually believed. Worse, the endurance of
the device is impossible to achieve even if this will be equipped with a
new battery.
Nokia executives spoke in Helsinki that the promise for GPRS
broadband and Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) are
too much. Many expect that GPRS will serve as a link of 3G systems
and is supposed to include data rates of more than 100kbps. For some,
EDGE is perceived to be a bit slower than GPRS.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 166

But truth is this can offer higher speeds. This is the reason why
US TDMA operators have shown interest on it. Nokia said the packet
data user rates goes more than 473kbps. Good thing, this inaccuracy
brings an advantage to EDGE. The fact is EDGE is capable to roll out to
120kbps.
The Head of GPRS Business Programme of Nokia, Petri
Poyhonen emphasized the responsibility of the press to deliver the
right information to all the users. This way, these users will be spared
from having a wrong impression on GPRS. This is the reason why
Nokia was strict to go through its Web site and allot a time to revise all
the reckless large numbers included on it.

The beauty of general packet radio service or GPRS is that users

of mobile phones are allowed to enjoy high-edged technology. This
kind of GSM service enables the users to receive different data and
information at a high-speed. GPRS can also be used for services like
SMS, MMS, email, Internet access, and WAP or wireless application
protocol. Having a WAP service with GPRS will have the WAP GPRS.
WAP is a special mobile phone technology that was made to
access the Internet. This technology permits many mobile phone
consumers to access some Internet sites. But the user must not expect
that these sites are the same as the real Internet sites he can have with
his notebook or desktop. WAP technology is specially made for mobile
phones. Thus, WAP sites are specifically created to fit in these devices.
The text and graphics of these WAP sites are only limited to enable
mobile phones to read them without any trouble. And of course, this
technology will never be possible without the GPRS. That is why WAP
GPRS come hand in hand.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 168

Using WAP GPRS, mobile phone consumers can access

different WAP sites at a high-speed. Delivering data from these sites
will be easier and faster with the WAP GPRS. This service will only be
used once the user has already activated the WAP GPRS. The activation
may also depend on the mobile phone model and the GSM network.
Using WAP GPRS services has a separate cost. This mostly
comes per block or per megabyte used. There are also some mobile
phones that will not allow phone calls while connected to WAP GPRS.
Whatever the downside of WAP GPRS technology, it is still considered
as a strong pillar for better communication.

PHONES

The General Packet Radio Service or GPRS is among the hopedfor current technologies that provides a mobile device with Internet
capability. GPRS can be simply interpreted as Internet on hand. And
it is apparently one of the most innovative and exciting mobile phone
features that everyone wants to get activated to his/her mobile phone.
Specifically, the GPRS feature of a mobile unit offers a fast and
immediate connection to the Internet. It is always on and enables
anyone to browse through various Web sites in the same way when
browsing or surfing through a regular PC. Mobile phones with GPRS do
not need any dial-up or modem to establish Internet connection. GPRS
enables an individual even to perform the usual sign and sign-out
tasks, and posting comments on blogs and photos post, among others.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 170

Moreover, a GPRS-enabled mobile phone allows its user to

carry out some conventional phone uses such as sending and receiving
Short Message Services (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
and in making air calls. It is amazing how GPRS data service provides
cheaper costs when it comes to air SMS, MMS, and air call. For
instance, a regular SMS sent would costs about US$0.40 with $0.01 for
7-bytes of data. On the other hand, a GPRS SMS costs about $0.010.05 per kilobytes.
In general, GPRS is an advance mobile feature mainly designed
for data transfer instead of voice. Basically, it provides a cheaper option
for various message types and sizes via mobile phones. It is a unique
data service of which its availability has not only remained an added
phone feature to increase sales of mobile phones in todays market, but
rather its decisive capability feature proved its relevance and usefulness
to various mobile phone users worldwide.

applications,

particularly those used among mobile phones. While there may be

people who enjoy and remain satisfied in using all these innovative
characteristics, there are those however, who continue to encounter
some boundaries in their capabilities, the most relevant of which is
GPRS coverage.
GPRS or the General Packet Radio Service is one of todays
mobile innovations mainly designed for data transfer through an
enabled Internet connection feature. GPRS is amazingly and popularly
translated as Internet on Hand, since it enables any mobile phones to
provide a speedy and immediate connection to the Internet. Moreover,
GPRS also serves as a low-cost solution for most common mobile
functions, such as Short Message Service (SMS), Multimedia
Messaging Service (MMS) and air call. GPRS data service is noticeably
at cheaper costs compared to using regular SMS, MMS, and air call.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 172

Unfortunately, however, for any sophisticated GPRS-enabled

mobile phone to function properly and efficiently, an unfailing or
steady GPRS network coverage must be constantly and infinitely
available. And surprisingly, there are current network providers or
operators that offer different GPRS network coverage. They vary in
terms of GPRS signal level (strong or weak) and range.
But in most cases, areas with high population densities would
normally have adequate GPRS network coverage (although relatively at
times depending devices performance). But for areas with much lower
population density, a network coverage (or subscription even) would be
unachievable (rather, somewhat of an impossible dream). Thus, for
people who wish to tele-work in these areas, a satellite dish or a
conventional phone line could be preferred instead.
Nevertheless, these currently experienced network coverage
problems would eventually be resolved as GPRS technologies continue
to advance and evolve.

The General Packet Radio Service or GPRS is currently one of

the most popular and widely used technologies in providing mobile
devices with Internet capability, mobile phones in particular. GPRS is
basically a mobile technology mainly designed for data transfer rather
than a voice transmission. GPRS in mobile phones enables its user to
access the Internet in the same way done on a personal computer.
GPRS is an advanced feature in mobile phones, however like
any other human technology achievements it is not an exempt from
frequent technical failures or task performance interruptions. Basically,
there can be various known and yet to be determined factors
contributing to some functional difficulties on mobile phones (e.g.,
GPRS availability coverage, inconsistent settings, configuration
failures, etc.). And this is a widespread scenario that every GPRS
subscriber of any mobile device for that matter, needs to understand.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 174

Following are six essential steps that can be carried out when
having problems connecting to the GPRS network service. These are:
1. Confirm GPRS subscription;
2. Contact an Internet Services Provider to enable a momentary
use of a CSD (dial-up connection) when network/s found in the
area do not have GPRS capabilities;
3. Confirm entry of username and password in connecting to the
GPRS network;
4. Verify whether network preferences are correctly set, otherwise
contact a mobile service provider to set properly the account;
5. Disable any wireless mode that was on to allow the mobile
phone to refresh and connect to the GPRS network; and
6. Speak to the respective mobile service provider if none of the
previous steps worked.
Keeping these helpful steps in mind always would ensure users
of GPRS-enabled mobile phone to a continued GPRS connectivity,
regardless of when and where they may be located.

Internet once or twice a day at the least. Usually most of these people
are recognized as tech-oriented individuals and/or Internet savvy ones.
It is a good thing that GPRS technologies have been adopted in mobile

features, mobile phones in particular. GPRS was designed for
transferring of data rather than transmitting voice. And most
essentially, GPRS is an innovation that enables the user of any mobile
phone has access to the Internet in similar way done on PC.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 176

But before these wished-for GPRS mobile phones are excitedly

indulged in by many, there are some fundamental steps to be carried
out to set-up GPRS on the mobile phone. First of which is to use the
phones Bluetooth GPRS connection modem to set-up a dial-up
connection. By doing so, the user learns about the username, password,
and phone number of respective network provider.
For instance, a particular phone has the number *99***1# with
phone number as the username, and password blanked. However, if
the phone has no Bluetooth connection for the PC, a USB cable would
suffice. Moreover, when in case a traditional dialup phone number
was initially used but did not work, then the funny number provided by
respective service provider would come in handy.
It is amazing how GPRS comprehensively converts a mobile
phone into an Internet on Hand and/or pocket PC online device/s.
No wonder everybody wants to have their mobile phones enabled by
GPRS.

The amazing thing about GPRS-enabled mobile phones is that

while they are efficiently and continuously being used online, the
mobile user or GPRS subscriber would only have to pay for the Mobile
Internet calls when data is actually sent and received. This simply
means that the entire Internet time spent via GPRS connection is free.
Likewise, no further cost is involved the moment once the data has
been stored in the phone.
This incredibly sweet gain is essentially included in the GPRS
data plans that are being offered by various wireless network providers.
Remarkably, a GPRS data plan bills only the subscriber for the amount
of data sent and received, and not for the time spent online. So a GPRS
data plan subscriber can therefore spend as much time online without
worrying about any cost for the time consumed. Apart from this are
other more plan privileges resulting to a cost-reducing and effective
GPRS connectivity.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 178

It is important to realize however that individual providers offer

different plan coverages and prices. Normally, a provider would offer a
set of sum data for a specified fee. A best example of which is when a
provider offers a monthly-plan fee of $15.99 for a 3-MB data
transmitted. The subscriber is then charged with additional $.05/KB
for any transmission beyond the pre-set 3MB amount.
Moreover, the subscriber can also opt for a GPRS data plan that
includes both data services and voice minutes. In this way, the mobile
phones voice capability features are efficiently and relevantly
maximized. Therefore, before purchasing any GPRS plan, make sure to
have considered both GPRS and voice data services.
In general, the GPRS technologies application into mobile
devices certainly provides a significant alternative solution for Internet
connectivity that can be potentially cost-reducing and effective.

there is no doubt that mobile phones are considered to be the most
widely used technology in the planet today. As of November of 2007,
there are already 3.3 billion phone subscribers all over the world (or
almost half of the human population). This is enough proof that mobile
phone technology has established its importance to peoples day-to-day

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 180

The growing popularity of mobile phone usage can be attributed

to a number of new technologies incorporated with it, which is aside
from its typical function of accepting and making phone calls. Such
services include SMS for text messaging, MMS for photo and video

mp3 player, and packet switching for access to the World Wide Web as
made possible by General Packet Radio Service or GPRS.
GPRS is a non-voice added service that allows mobile phones to
send and receive over an Internet Protocol (IP)based network. It
functions much like a data bearer that enables wireless access to data
networks such as the Internet and other applications. Aside from
making it possible to access the Internet, GPRS also facilitates some
new applications such as file transfer and home automation (the ability
to remotely control and access in-house appliances and machines).
GPRS is also referred to as being always connected as no
dialing is necessary to get connected. It is even much faster than
conventional GSM systems. For instructions on how to enable GPRS,

GPRS BY ORANGE MOBILE

What first comes into your mind when you hear the word
orange? Orange may be known to many as a secondary color formed
when red is combined with yellow. Others may also refer to it as a
citrus fruit rich in Vitamin C. But in France, the word orange was
given a new meaning through France Telecoms mobile network
operator and Internet service provider, simply known as Orange. It is
considered as a unique commercial faade when France Telecom
services are being talked about.
Orange has crossed the borders of France and as of December
of 2007, two-thirds of the 170 million France Telecom subscribers in
five continents are Orange customers. This was made possible through
several franchises and partnerships with different mobile phone and
Internet service providers around the globe. One of the service
offerings of Orange Mobile is General Packet Radio Service or GPRS.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 182

GPRS technology makes it possible for Orange subscribers to

access the Internet and other Web services such as email, chat, instant
message, games and file downloads using a mobile phone. However,
GPRS cannot be activated on all mobile phones so make sure to select
one with Internet capabilities. Orange subscribers with Pay Monthly or
Pay-as-you-go plan can avail of this very useful feature.
On the other hand, bear in mind that this service is not for free.
Unlike making phones calls, which is charged by the number of
minutes, GPRS is charged on how much data is sent and received in
megabytes. Since GPRS is an always on service, you can remain
connected since data transfer is the one being charged. To activate
GPRS, simply call Oranges customer service hot line or visit Oranges

GPRS ON POCKET PCS

Next to mobile phones, palm, PDAs and other handheld

devices gained dominance in recent years. It is like a mini-computer
that can be used in making and receiving phone calls. Usually,
handheld devices are larger and heavier than mobile phones. It has a
wider screen, though recently introduced mobile phones almost have
the same physical attributes as with handheld devices. Technologywise, a lot of great features were incorporated with handheld devices
wherein the user can install different applications depending on his or
her preference. One of the most popular handheld devices is Pocket PC.
Pocket PC, also abbreviated as PPC or P/PC functions as a
personal digital assistant that runs the Microsoft Windows Mobile
operating system. However in the year 2007, Microsoft has dropped
the name Pocket PC with the advent of Windows Mobile 6, a recently
released OS version with instant messaging-like capability. Such
devices with integrated phone and touch screen features are now
referred to as Windows Mobile Professional.

it possible for users to access Web sites and other Internet applications
by transmitting and receiving TCP/IP based data to and from GPRSenabled devices. But then again, there is a need to make sure that all
needed ports are not blocked to make all Web services available. To
make sure that everything is properly set up, it would be best to seek
the advice of your local phone service provider. Indeed, getting a
continuous wireless connection to the Internet has never been this fun

TO

3G (UMTS)

Just like computers, there seems to be no stopping proponents

of mobile phones to introduce new and improved technologies as years
pass by. At first, mobile phones are only used in transmitting voice
signals, specifically when taking and receiving calls. But now, it seems
that all gadgets were integrated on one single device.
At present, mobile phones can be used to take pictures and
videos through the camera, play games through Java gaming
technology, send and receive emails while surfing the Web through
WAP services, watch movies using the media player and listen to music
through the MP3 player. These technologies have made mobile phones
more in demand nowadays with more and more people subscribing to
telecom networks to take advantage of these great features.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 186

Mobile phone evolution can be traced back in 1970s when 1G or

first generation in wireless communications was developed. 1G is the
first true mobile phone system that makes use of analog voice
signaling. This was then improved with the development of 2G in the
1990s that features digital voice signaling. 2G technologies include
GSM and CDMA. A decade after, 3G was born with capabilities such as
enhanced multimedia (voice, video and data), international roaming,
and faster connection speeds.
In between 2G and 3G is 2.5G, which is more popularly known
as General Packet Radio Service or GPRS. It functions as a necessary
bridge between 2G and 3G, incorporating both technologies to come up
with better consumer solutions. Since the connection is always turned
on, the subscriber can go online anytime. To learn more about these
generations in mobile communications, please contact your phone

Who would have thought that mobile phones can now be used
to access the Internet? From a typical device that allows people to
communicate with each other through voice signals, proponents of
mobile phones have definitely adjusted to the changing world,
introducing technologies that make life a lot easier for people who are
always on the go. Newly released mobile phones in the market even
have the capability of receiving television frequencies, making it
possible for people to watch their favorite TV shows while away from
home. These are just some of the reasons why more and more people

GPRS AND BLUETOOTH:

COMPLEMENTING EACH OTHER TO
PROVIDE WIRELESS PHONE
CONNECTIVITY

It seems that almost everything has gone wireless nowadays. As

of this time, cables are still being used to build a small network of
computers, communicating with each other to perform specific tasks.
However, the technological advancement incorporated with recently
released laptops, personal computers, printers, digital cameras, mobile
phones and other handheld devices makes it possible to transmit data
without getting wired. This has been made possible through a wireless
protocol commonly known as Bluetooth.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 190

Bluetooth technology uses radio frequencies in the 2.45 GHz

range to transmit data over short distances of up to 33 feet (10 meters)
or even less. Properly setting up Bluetooth on both devices will
definitely make it easier to transfer information from one point to
another. But then again, Bluetooth is not supposed to replace the
conventional wired technology, mainly because of its range limits. It
was developed for the purpose of simplifying the process of connecting
devices.
In addition, General Packet Radio Service or GPRS and
Bluetooth complement each other to provide Internet access to mobile
phones, laptops and handheld devices. While Bluetooth makes it
possible to continuously get an Internet connection even while moving
the device at shorter distances, GPRS on the other hand preserves the
connection while on the road or moving from one service provider to
another. Here is one way on how these two technologies can work
together. First, the mobile phone attempts to make an Internet
connection through a GPRS provider using PPP. Once connected, it will
talk with Bluetooth devices over a PAN connection and routes packets
of TCP/IP between GPRS and Bluetooth interfaces.

REASONS TO DISABLE GPRS ON

YOUR MOBILE PHONE

People always say that there are always two sides of the coin.
One would be the positive side and the other one would be the negative
side. Some always look at the brighter perspective, which is good
because people tend to take advantage of everything that they can use
to make life a lot easier than the usual. But then again, not all are
pleased as they keep on innovating things and strive to get the best out
of something. The same thing goes with technology. A lot of new and
exciting advancements were introduced these past years but not all
people buy it. One of which is General Packet Radio Service or GPRS.
Come to think of it, the purpose of GPRS is very simple, which
is to make it possible for people to stay connected on the Internet while
away from home or work PC. Others see this as something that is very
beneficial, while some look at it as more of an opportunity since GPRS
also has its fair share of limitations.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 192

First and foremost, GPRS is not for free. Monthly contract costs
vary between providers and countries. Though GPRS is usually charged
on the amount of data transmitted and received other than usage, it is
not advisable to use it when working on large file downloads. It is also
prioritized lower than speech, leaving the quality of connection at stake
when voice traffic is high. In addition, GPRS connection speed usually
drops logarithmically when location is getting far from the nearest
GSM tower.
For these reasons, GPRS may only work as an alternative to a
primary desktop Internet connection. Should you wish to disable GPRS
on your mobile phone, refer to the phones User Manual or better yet
contact your phone carrier for more detailed instructions.

FREE GPRS ANYONE?

With a lot of great features incorporated with recently released

mobile phones, telecom companies are taking advantage of these to
increase profits. It is because of this very reason that customers should
be wary as to what subscription plan best suits their needs and budget.
Usually, phone carriers offer monthly plans, which mean that the user
gets unlimited access to mobile phone features with a fixed monthly
rate. Others settle for a limited or prepaid plan, mainly because of
minimal phone usage. If you only use your mobile phone to make
phone calls or send text messages, then this plan will work for you.
However, there may be times that phone companies are in the
process of introducing new features and offers it for free at first. One
very good example is General Packet Radio Service or GPRS. This is
what they call pilot testing, wherein service providers check if people
will buy the idea. Since GPRS makes it possible for people to connect to
the Web using an Internet-enabled phone, it became a sensation in just
a few weeks of being released.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 194

Realizing the importance of GPRS made people subscribe to the

service after the pilot test, wherein phone carriers usually charge the
service depending on the data transmitted and received in megabytes.
This offer is not that bad after all. Making GPRS as an alternative
connection is just what some people need, usually professionals, in
doing business.
As a marketing strategy, other providers still offer GPRS for free
as of this time. There is indeed a very stiff competition in the telecom
industry nowadays and GPRS is one of the features that can attract
potential customers. Make sure to check with your phone company on
how to properly set it up and take advantage of this very exciting
feature while you can.

USING A GPRS CARD TO CONNECT

TO THE

INTERNET

There are a few ways on how a user can connect to the Internet
using a Web-enabled mobile phone or handheld device. If GPRS
settings are properly set up on your device, you will surely get an
always on connection. This means that you can access the Web and
other Internet applications anytime you want. You can also buy a
PCMCIA card that can be used as a GPRS enabled modem. Once
inserted, you can manually set up a dial up connection and access
available Internet services for as long as the needed ports are not
blocked. Finally, a mobile phone can also be used as a GPRS modem,
making it easier for you to connect to the Internet using a laptop or
desktop computer. The connection between the GPRS modem and the
terminal itself can be via infrared, Bluetooth or a serial cable.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 196

There are three types of GPRS modems that you can use A, B,
and C. Class A is the new generation of handsets that allow users to
simultaneously talk on the phone while data is being transferred or
received. Class B handsets can be used as a traditional phone and a
GPRS modem. Most mobile phones nowadays belong to this type
wherein users can send and receive data and talk in turn. Finally, Class
C types can only be used as GPRS modems, which mean that these are
made for data transmission only and are not designed for talking.
These are usually called PC-GPRS cards for notebooks.
GPRS cards are usually cheaper compared to other devices.
However, there is a need to configure it first according to the
manufacture and provider settings to effectively use its GPRS
functionality.

GPRS CHARGES: THE NEED TO

MONITOR MOBILE PHONE
INTERNET USAGE

Imagine yourself working on a report using your desktop PC

and all of a sudden your Internet connection got disconnected. Indeed,
this is one of those days when you think that you are the most unlucky
person on earth. Working on a deadline is one of the most nervewracking experiences one can ever have. It is for such reason alone that
people tend to look for a best alternative during these times when
everything falls out of place. Connecting to the Internet via General
Packet Radio Service or GPRS may be just what you need.
GPRS is being offered by almost all telecom companies
nowadays. To take advantage of this feature, you need to buy a mobile
phone or a handheld device with Web capabilities. Most devices
released in the market today are Internet-ready, which is good because
there is a need to go wireless once in a while.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 198

Charge for GPRS usually depends on your phone carrier. It

typically comes with your monthly subscription plan. There are also
some that offers it for free, while others charge the service on top of
your subscription plan. To make sure, check with your phone company
and confirm. But then again, GPRS is usually being charged on the
amount of data transmitted or received other than usage. There may be
times that GPRS is enabled, but since no data transmission activity is
present, you will not be charged for it.
The amount being charged for each megabyte sent and received
is dependent on the phone carrier. To make sure that you are still
within your limit, it is best to regularly monitor your mobile phone
Internet usage.

In the absence of a Web-enabled mobile phone, you can still

connect to the Internet using a General Packet Radio Service or GPRS
connection. This is by using a GSM or GPRS modem wherein there is a
need to define a Windows Dial-up Networking connection that will
instruct the gateway on how to use the modem in connecting to the
Internet using a GPRS connection.
Before making a connection, it would be best to determine the
following values first: GPRS APN (Access Point Name); the IP address
of the WAP gateway; and the MMSC Message Server URL to be used in
sending and receiving MMS via the operator network. You can refer to
the Users Guide manual that came with the phone package in
determining such values. You can also check this information by
contacting your phone service provider.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 200

Another thing to consider is the modem driver. In making a

dial-up connection, it would be best to have an updated modem driver
to easily connect to the Internet. You can confirm this by querying the
modem in the Phone and Modem Options of Windows Control Panel. If
in case there is no modem driver for the modem, you can still manually
install standard or generic modem drivers.
However, if you will be using a phone as a modem, it is required
to determine GPRS CID (connection ID) so as to avoid confusion on
the existing phone settings. This GPRS ID is usually assigned to a
defined GPRS APN and every phone has predefined CIDs. To
determine the phones existing CID values, it would be best to consult
again the phones User Guide manual. Identifying CID values and
properly setting up the configuration mark a successful GPRS
connection over dial-up.

ALL ABOUT GPRS CONNECTION

SPEEDS

General Packet Radio Service or GPRS gave a whole new

meaning to a users mobile phone experience. Aside from the usual
function of mobile phones, connecting to the Internet using a GPRS
connection is one of the additional features that made people realize
the importance of technological breakthroughs in the telecom industry.
It is because of these advancements that made mobile phone usage
more in demand like never before.
GPRS facilitates direct connections whereby data is sent and
transmitted as the need arises. Its always on capability allows users to
instantly access Internet applications from Web surfing, email, chat,
and downloads among others. In addition, GPRS also permits
improved quality of data services as measured in terms of response
time, reliability and supported features.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 202

But then again, one of the frequently asked questions about

GPRS is its speed. This usually depends on the network availability and
terminal capability but it can offer a speed as high as 171.2 kbps. This is
definitely much better compared to connecting to the Internet using
dial-up connectivity. Aside from speed, setting up a GPRS connection
on your mobile phone also means convenience of accessing the Web
any time you like. But before taking advantage of this great feature, you
can contact your phone carrier to determine the steps on how to
activate it on your Web-enabled mobile phone.
To have a considerable high speed using a GPRS connection,
make sure to be in close reference with the GSM tower. In addition,
there may be data transfer latencies as GPRS is less prioritized
compared to speech services. This means that if call volume is high,
GPRS speed is at a minimum. However, such limitations are expected
and GPRS connection is definitely here to stay.

Data communications has definitely reached greater heights

with the introduction of several new breakthroughs in mobile phone
technology. At first, people just settle in taking and receiving voice
calls. But through the years, other forms of communication such as
instant messaging and chat, email, text messaging (SMS), photo
sharing (MMS) and video messaging were made possible with the
release of new and improved mobile phones in the market today. The
telecom industry has definitely increased its profits with more and
more subscriptions coming to take advantage of such incredible
features.
One of the innovations presented in the past couple of years is
General Packet Radio Service or GPRS. This type of connection is not
only for mobile phones but it can also be used to setup a laptop
computer. All you need is a GPRS Data Card and you will be up and
running in a matter of seconds.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 204

To connect to the Internet, just place your SIM in the data card,
load the software then insert the data card into the laptop. Using GPRS
data cards can definitely increase connection speeds of up to 7 times
faster, specifically when you are within a 3G coverage area. The
inserted SIM should be 3G ready to take advantage of the fast
connection speed. If ever you are outside 3G limits, it will automatically
operate at GPRS speeds.
This type of connection is more appropriate for people who are
always on the go. You can still check important emails while traveling
and complete unfinished work even outside the office. Using a GPRS
data card is a must for all professionals out there. For more

DIAL-UP

For most Internet users, connecting to the Web using the

telephone line is something that is very stone age. With the
introduction of high speed (broadband) technology such as cable and
DSL most likely in the year 2000 has definitely improved peoples
online experience and made a sudden shift to faster connection from
the very conventional dial-up access. You will definitely see a huge
difference comparing the dial-up speed of 40 kbps against broadbands
700 kbps. But then again, faster access also means higher price. This is
also the reason why others remain loyal to dialup - often, they cannot
afford having a broadband connection.
It is a good thing that General Packet Radio Service or GPRS
came into the picture. GPRS is a protocol used to transfer packets of
data over a mobile phone network. It offers an always on connection
that people can take advantage of to access the Web, send and read
email or instant messages, and play online games among other Internet
applications in a considerably faster speed of up to 171.2 kbps.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 206

What is good about GPRS is that you do not necessarily need to

dial-up to access the Internet. This means that you can ease your
worries in getting charged for long distance calls for mistakenly using
an access number that is not local to your calling plan. All you need is a
Web-enabled phone, and configure its GPRS settings. In addition, you
will not be paying for your online time per minute. You will only pay for
the amount of data you transferred and received. For details on how to
setup GPRS, contact your local phone service provider immediately.

EDGE or Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution is

considered as a close cousin of GPRS or General Packet Radio Service.
It has been introduced in GSM networks worldwide in the year 2003,
initially in the United States through Cingular (now AT&T). Otherwise
known as EGPRS (or Enhanced GPRS), EDGE is one useful technology
that provides GPRS solution for larger data services including video
conferencing

and

streaming

videos.

Because

it

supports

the

transmission of larger data, it requires a connection speed higher than

typical GPRS. GPRS is said to connect at data rates of up to 171.2 kbps
while EDGE supports 473 kbps. If GPRS is classified as 2.5G, EDGE is
graded 2.75G.

GPRS 100 Success Secrets| 208

Though the two technologies have almost the same concepts, a

lot of improvements have been made to EDGE. Since EDGE can
accommodate up to three times the data capacity of GPRS, EDGE
operators can also handle three times the number of GPRS subscribers.
In fact, EDGE was developed to increase spectrum efficiency and data
transmission rates, aside from increasing capacity for mobile usage.
In addition, EDGE takes the mobile community one step closer
to UMTS or Universal Mobile Telephone Service. This is currently
being adopted by TDMA or Time Division Multiple Access community
in providing an evolutionary migration path from GPRS to UMTS. In
fact, EDGE implementation does not require any hardware or software
changes in the GSM core networks. However, there is a need to modify
base stations by installing EDGE compatible transceiver units and
upgrade subsystems to support EDGE. If in any case that an EDGE
network is not available, GPRS will automatically be used.
Indeed, EDGE offers the best that can be achieved on a GPRS
network, as the mobile industry is now getting 3G ready.
