BACK UP AND RESTORATION

1.1 SAVE/RESTORE CONFIGURATION DATA

1.1.1 Restore the Factory Default Settings
The current data can be restored to the factory default parameter values and configurations in MSCB
package by the Cold Start, or the CID operation. Restoring the factory default to ACT memory
specifies a node to the default setups.

1.1.1.1 Precautions

Performing the configuration data restoration of the MSCB package will log off any session to
the target NE.

This operation (data restoration) is not available for remote NE.

1.1.1.2 Procedure: Restore Factory Default by Cold Start

1) Press and hold the RESET button and COLD button on the MSCB package at the same time.
Keep pressing them. LEDs on the MSCB package go off.
2) Release the RESET button. (Keep pressing the COLD button.)
3) When the LED on the MSCB package lights up, release the COLD button.
4) Wait until all the LEDs on the MSCB package go off. (LEDs on the MSCB package stay on
while reading data.) However, if any alarm is detected within the NE, the LED(s)
corresponding to the detected alarm severity level will not go off.

This step is the end of the procedure.

HARDWARE MAINTENANCE

2.1 LASER SHUTDOWN

The U-Node WBM has automatic/forced laser shutdown function to protect eyes of maintenance
personnel. The ALS mode functions according to the setup specified by the procedure in the
Parameter Changes section.

2.1.1 Descriptions
2.1.1.1 Automatic Laser Shutdown (ALS)
The Automatic Laser Shutdown (ALS) is enabled automatically if the incoming signal is lost for a
certain period of time. While in the ALS mode, where ALS Restart Mode is specified to AUTO, the
U-Node WBM will repeat transmitting signals periodically to check whether the traffic problem
occurred at the far-end NE is cleared. After receiving the normal signals from the far-end NE, ALS
mode is disabled and the local NE starts transmitting signals normally. The length of periodical signal
transmission interval can be customized. The ALS function can be disabled if not necessary.

2.1.1.2 Forced Shutdown

The Forced Shutdown is enabled by the maintenance personnel via CID to stop transmitting optical
signals regardless of the ALS mode. When the Forced Shutdown is executed to a facility, the optical
output signals are stopped regardless of whether the NE is receiving an incoming signal. This function
is available only when a target facility is in IS (In Service) state. When the service state of the facility
is changed to OOS (Out of Service), then is back into the IS, the facility starts transmitting signals
again.

2.1.1.3 ALS Manual Release

ALS Manual Release is the function to apply the first optical input to restart transmitting signals by a
maintenance personnels operation. For the output duration, Long (90 seconds) or Short (2 seconds or
9 seconds, according to the Parameters for ALS specified by the Parameter Changes procedure) is
available.

3.3. TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE

This section provides the maintenance information and procedures related to traffics.

Traffic maintenance should be carried out by an maintenance personnel to assure or inspect the quality
of the traffic.
The tasks provided in this section are not arranged in any specific order.

3.3.1 LOOPBACK LINE FACILITY MAINTENANCE

Loopback function allows fault isolation and pre-service operation practice. Performing loopback
interrupts the flow of traffic, and changes the normal transmission. Therefore, the use of loopbacks as
routine practice is not recommended.

When the loopback is executed, the system generates an AIS (alarm indication signal), and sends it to
the far-end NE. Also, all IPPM parameters will be indicated as INVALID.
Once the loopback is initiated, the MNT lamp (LED) on the package lights up to indicate that the
loopback is in operation. The loopback operation can be initiated STM1E package, E12/ E31/E32
package, and other optical facilities such as STM-16.

The two different loopbacks cannot be executed to the same facility at a time.

Alarms in the path layer are masked during the loopback operation.

3.3.2 Facility Loopback

3.3.2.1 For STMn Optical Facilities
The performance of this facility loopback is that the outgoing signal that is originated at an
optical facility of a local NE is looped back at the local NE before being scrambled.

3.3.2.2 For E12/E31/E32 Facility

The E12, E31, or E32 facility loopback is originated and enabled at the near-end (local node), and E12
AIS (on E12 facility), E31 AIS (on E31 facility) or E32 AIS (on E32 facility) is inserted toward the
remote node. This type of loopback isolates failure(s).

3.3.2.3 Procedure: Perform Facility Loopback

3.3.3 Terminal Loopback

3.3.3.1 For STMn Optical Facility
An outgoing signal that is originated at an optical facility of the local NE is looped back at a far-end

3.3.3.2 For E12/E31/E32 Facility

Terminal loopback is originated at an E12/E31/E32 facility of a near-end node (local node), which is
crossconnected to an E12/E31/E32 facility of a remote node. At the remote node, loopback is enabled,
