EXERCISE BENEFITS
NEWBORNS TOO!
Not only does regular exercise during pregnancy benefit mothers-
to-be, it also confers a health benefit to their newborns. By exercising
during their second and third trimesters during their first pregnancies,
women can substantially decrease their risk of delivering overly large
babies. “Fetal macrosomia,” or “big baby syndrome,” poses potential
risks for both mothers and their newborns. Larger birth weights, which
appear to be on the rise, pose the risk of delivery problems and a greater
likelihood of C-sections for mothers. For babies, high birth weight may
be associated with a greater risk of developing obesity later in life. For
these reasons, expectant mothers are urged to discuss their proposed
exercise regimens with their doctors.

Good prenatal care is important for both mother and child. If you have
concerns regarding your pregnancy, call WISE OBSTETRICS &
GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. It is our goal to keep you
informed about your options, help you understand you body’s needs,
and work with you to keep you and the baby healthy and happy. Our
office is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur.
New patients are welcome.

P.S. Pregnant women should avoid any exercise that requires them to lie
flat on their backs because doing so may restrict blood flow to both baby
and mother.

ORAL THRUSH IN BABIES

Candida is yeast bacteria present
in the mouths and digestive tracts
of nearly everybody. Under normal
circumstances, candida poses no
problem. However, infants have not
yet developed the immune system
or the good bacteria necessary to
keep the yeast from overgrowth.
Sometimes, when unchecked,
candida can cause an uncomfortable
condition called oral thrush. Oral
thrush is easily diagnosed by the
cottage cheese-like white patches
growing inside the mouth. Babies
suffering from oral thrush will be
sore and fussy when eating or using
a pacifier. The condition is easily
cured with an antibiotic, but it may
come and go. Candida flourishes
in warm, moist mouths and diaper
areas as well as in improperly
