Review this document to learn about which virtual environments AlienVault supports. Refer to the
download page for the latest version of download. See the release notes for details on known and
resolved issues.

Supported VMware Versions

AlienVault USM virtual appliances are supported on the following VMware versions:

VMware ESXi 5.x (recommended)

VMware ESXi 4.x

See Special Consideration When Using VMware ESXi 4.x for details.

Supported Virtual Environments

AlienVault USM virtual appliances are optimized to run in virtual environments that closely match
the specification that we have established for AlienVault USM hardware appliances. Inadequate
system resources may impact the deployments ability to perform necessary tasks and may also
impact stated throughput.

Recommended Hardware Specifications

All AlienVault hardware appliances share the following specifications. In order to achieve similar
performance, we highly recommend that you use similar or better hardware to host the AlienVault
USM virtual appliances.

CPU type:
RAM type:
Disk type:
Memory performance (MEMCPY):
Disk performance (random read/write):

Intel Xeon E5620

DDR3 1333MHz
SAS 10000 RPM (204Mb/s)
3310.32 MiB/s
15.97Mb/s

Special Consideration When Using VMware ESXi 4.x

Special consideration is required when using VMware ESXi 4.x. Since the maximum number of
virtual CPUs per virtual machine is 8, hyperthreading must be disabled to ensure the correct CPU
performance. By default, VMware ESX 4.x formats with a 1MB block size during the formatting
process, allowing for storage of files 256GB and under. Therefore it is necessary to increase the
block size in order to meet our disk size requirement. (To do so, follow this Knowledge Base article
from VMware: Increasing the block size of local VMFS storage in ESX 4.x during installation.)

Supported Browsers
AlienVault supports the following browsers. All AlienVault releases are tested on the most recent
version of the browsers and one version prior to the most recent version.
