palm which was in a large
pot. A “pup” recently ap-
peared and began to grow.

the original plant with a
garden spade. We planted
the mother plant into the
ground, and it’s doing fine.
The pup, however, is not do-
ing well. Is there any way to
save it?
It all depends on whether
the new offset had its own
root system. If it did, and if
it still has green foliage, it
probably will recover. How-
ever, if the roots were very
limited, or even non-exis-
tent, it probably is already
completely brown. That sort
of dividing is better done in
the fall or early spring, when
temperatures are warm, but
not beastly. Be warned, too,
that sago palms are dam-
aged when temperatures fall
very far into the high 20s.
Dear Neil: What kind of
fertilizer should I use for
trees that are growing in
caliche soils at property we
have in Central Texas? When
should I apply it? And, how
often should new trees be
watered?
If the trees were planted
from containers, all of their
roots came with them. That
means you can use an all-ni-
trogen, lawn-type fertilizer
on them (no weed-and-feed
products, however). Feed
them every two months
April through October with

taining wall to crack. Unfor-
tunately, that wall is the side
of the carport. I’m also begin-
ning to see signs of cracking
of the carport slab as well.
Can I cut the root? Will that
stop the damage?
Cut the root 5 or 6 feet
out from the carport. The
piece that remains beyond
the cut will die and decay,
so it should cause no fur-
ther damage from its swell-
ing. However, over the next
few years, that old root will
decay and disappear. If it’s
large enough (more than 2
or 3 inches), it might leave
enough of a hole that the
concrete could actually set-
tle and crack the opposite di-
rection. That’s not too likely,
however.
Dear Neil: I am having
spider mite problems for
the second year in a row. I
have sprayed with several
products, and nothing has
helped. Is Kelthane a good
product, and is it still on the
market?
Kelthane was a terrific
product, but “was” is the op-
erative word. It’s no longer
available. Now, you’ll have
to try one of the general-
purpose insecticides. Most
do a good job on mites, but
you have to treat before the

spreads very quickly. Be pa-
tient, and change the solu-
tion every day or two, to be
sure it’s always fresh. If ants
return, rather than spraying
around the feeder, consider

the top of the chain.
Dear Neil: We had an
attack of some type of web-
worms on our Texas moun-
tain laurels in June. No
other plants were affected.
My husband sprayed with
Malathion, and that seemed
to eliminate the worms, but
the mountain laurels are
brown and look like they’re
dead. How can we bring
them back? Should we trim
them?
Apply an all-nitrogen,
lawn-type fertilizer to pro-
mote vigorous new growth.
Trim the plants as needed
to reshape them. I’ve had
the same pest on my own
mountain laurel, and it has
bounced back both times.
However, I saw it before the
problem became acute each
time. You’ll know within a
few more weeks.

has type 2 diabetes. Almost
one in 10 Texans has it.
Odds are equally good that
you’re familiar with people
successfully managing type
2 diabetes, including Larry
King, Mike Huckabee, Pat-

Type 2 diabetes often
starts as insulin resistance
or pre-diabetes, a disorder
in which the body’s cells
don’t use insulin the way
they should. People with
pre-diabetes have blood
sugar levels that are higher
than normal, but not high
enough to be diagnosed as
diabetes. The body may at
first produce more insulin
to compensate for insulin
resistance but over time
loses its ability to keep up
with the amount of insulin
obesity, family history of
diabetes, a lack of physical
activity and other factors.
Warning signs include fre-
quent urination, increased
thirst or appetite, dizziness,
blurred vision, sores that
take a long time to heal or
frequent infections. In some
cases, type 2 diabetes has
no symptoms. You can be
diabetic or pre-diabetic and
not even know it.
“A lot of people haven’t
heard of pre-diabetes,” said
Richard Kropp with the
Texas Department of State
Health Services. “If you do
a risk assessment and find
that you have a higher risk
for type 2 diabetes, talk to
your doctor about being
tested. If you have pre-
diabetes, simple lifestyle
changes can go far in pre-
venting or delaying the on-
set of type 2 diabetes.”

I recently returned from a fishing

trip for catfish with guides George
Rule, Casey Nobles and a few of their
good friends at Lake Tawakoni. We
found the catfish receptive to the pun-
gent aroma of punch bait and soured
grain, and after a few hours fishing,
the ice chest was brimming full of
channel and blue catfish.
Tawakoni is, arguably, one of the
best, if not the best catfish lakes in
the country, and I was fishing with
some “sure nuff ” catfish pros. I fully

Maybe you’ve seen the com-
ical home video on YouTube
titled “sleepwalking fail.” It is
a short clip of a sleeping dog
that starts to “run” horizontal-
ly in his sleep, then suddenly
jumps up and slams into a
wall. Although the video is
seriously funny, there is noth-
ing funny about what might
be wrong with this animal.
This dog could be dreaming,
but it’s not known for certain
if animals dream, according
to Dr. M.A. Crist, clinical as-
sistant professor at Texas
A&M College of Veterinary
Medicine. Most likely this
animal is displaying signs of
a sleep disorder.
Sleeping disorders are not
healthy, and as with humans,
we see disturbed sleep pat-
terns as a sign of old age, dis-
ease or life-altering illness.
The two sleeping disorders
that are most dangerous to
an animal’s health are nar-
colepsy and cataplexy. If your
pet has one of these disorders
and is left alone, or unattend-
ed near water, they could pos-
sibly drown.
“Narcolepsy is the occur-
rence of uncontrollable rapid
eye movement (REM) sleep
phase characterized by the
presence of rapid eye move-
ments and fast phase activ-
ity,” said Crist. “Cataplexy
is the sudden development
of rapid duration voluntary
muscle weakness, flaccidity
or paralysis of all muscles ex-
cept extraocular and respira-
tory muscles.
These two sleep disorders
are usually a congenital
and inherited condition that
can be brought on by excite-
ment such as playing, eating,
drinking or greeting owners
and can last seconds to min-
utes, many times a day, or in-
frequently.”
Warning signs of one or
both of these disorders are
sudden collapses of the pet
into lateral or sterna recum-
bancy with no movements.
With narcolepsy, the ani-
mal appears asleep, and with

be roused with petting, exter-
nal stimuli and loud noises.
These disorders are not
curable.
Older cats may also expe-
rience behavior changes in
sleep cycles or waking in the
night, restlessness and pac-
ing. This is either related to
senility or a disease called
hyperthyroidism.
“Hyperthyroidism occurs
when the thyroid gland pro-
duces an excess amount of
thyroid hormone, which can
lead to cardiac disease and
high blood pressure,” said
Crist. “A specific thyroid blood
test can be checked to verify
this abnormality and treat-
ment can be initiated. Mela-
tonin, an internal hormone
secreted by the pineal gland
during darkness, can also be
given as an oral supplement
usually with minimal side ef-
fects as a potential treatment
for sleep disorders.”
Of course, there are several
things that pet owners can
do for their pets before their
sleeping disorders become too
severe.
“If owners notice their pet
having a change in their
sleeping pattern, they want to
take them to their veterinar-
ian for a complete physical
examination and laboratory
analysis,” said Crist. “Medi-

ian to help combat their sleep
disturbance.
“While melatonin has been
useful for treating sleep disor-
ders that arise from hypothy-
roidism, senility or cognitive
dysfunction,” said Crist, “it is
not regulated by the FDA, so
ask a veterinarian about the
correct dose for your pet. Acu-
puncture and herbal medi-
cations are other modalities
that might be used to treat
sleep disorders in pets.”
Placing your pet on certain
diets can also aid in their
sleeping troubles.
“Omega-3 fatty acids and
diets that are enriched with
antioxidants are good for
dogs with cognitive dysfunc-
tion and sleep issues,” said
Crist. “Therapeutic diets sup-
plemented with antioxidants
such as vitamin C, mixed
tocopherols, beta-carotene,
flavenoids, carotenoids, and
omega-3 fatty acids had dogs
show more improvement on
the performance of cognitive
tasks than dogs on a non-sup-
plemented diet.”
It will always be a true
mystery whether or not pets
dream.
“In mammals and birds,
studies have shown that
long episodes of nondream-
ing sleep referred to as “slow-
wave” or SW sleep is followed
by short episodes of dreaming

said Crist. “If a disturbance

However, we will never re-

activity period in people. Dogs
do have leg movements, facial

Crist mentioned that it
is important to know some
sleep disorders require a
lengthy behavioral consulta-
tion and examination by a
veterinarian. Selective se-
rotonin reuptake inhibitor
antidepressants should be
prescribed for these dogs and
cats who have diagnosed ob-
sessive-compulsive behavior

BIRDS AND BEYOND

I’ve been telling the story of my
whirlwind tour across Texas in late
May. This trip was an 11-day expedi-
tion to search for Tufted and Black-
crested Titmice and their hybrids as a
part of my graduate research.
Last time I left you at Colorado Bend
State Park where after several hours
of hiking I finally saw a Black-crested
Titmouse. That night I camped at Can-
yon of the Eagles, a park near Burnet
run by the Lower Colorado River Au-
thority. I was tired and wasn’t really in
the mood to go wandering around the
park. So, I set up my tent and relaxed
at my campsite. When I first arrived,
a four and a half foot long rat snake
slithered across the grass. I admired
the cacti growing in the thick brush
surrounding me, including blooming
prickly pears and tasajillo with its pen-
cil-like stems. A gorgeous male Paint-
ed Bunting in rainbow colors hopped
on a flat rock, pecking at nearby grass
seeds.
After a while I heard a familiar call.
It seems that even though I was not
going to seek titmice, they found me.
A pair of Black-crested Titmice came
through the edge of my campground
feeding a clumsy juvenile. The juvenile
titmouse lacked the assured move-
ments of its foraging parents. It was
picking up tidbits from the trees and
maneuvered a green thing in its beak
(perhaps a slender leaf?) that was not
food, but must have been interesting
anyway.
The next day I headed southwest
and visited Willis Creek Park north of
Austin. It was a cloudy morning but I
saw several interesting birds, such as
Indigo Bunting, Yellow Warbler and
Ladder-backed Woodpecker. The wood-
pecker went into a tree cavity and I
could hear its babies begging for more
food. I wasn’t there long when it start-
ed to rain. I hurried back to my car and
settled in to wait for the rain to stop. I
soon realized it wasn’t going to stop for
quite a while. Being worn out from all
this travelling, I took the rain as a fine
opportunity for a three-hour nap.
By early afternoon I was ready to go
to Austin. Several local birders kindly
took time to let me visit their yards and
show me some local parks. I saw a hy-
brid titmouse and got some recordings,
and also saw other neat birds such as
Summer Tanager, Lesser Goldfinch
and Yellow Warbler. The next morning
found me at Big Webberville Park, also
home to hybrid titmice. In addition to a
lone titmouse, my birding friend and I
found a Prothonotary Warbler, Eastern
Wood-Pewee, Chestnut-sided Warbler,
American Redstart, Warbling Vireos,
and a Black-throated Green Warbler.
Bastrop State Park was my mid-day
stop. I saw several titmice here singing
among the towering pines. This state
park, located east of Austin, is famous
as a part of the “Lost Pines.” These lob-
lolly pines are farther west than any
others in Texas. The pine-oak forest
was a definite change of pace from all
the brushy areas and deciduous trees
I had been seeing. One trail, named
the Bracken Fern Trace, even had a
beautiful carpet of ferns under the big
trees. Warblers were quite abundant. I
heard a Pileated Woodpecker calling.
A bunch of chattering juvenile Black-
and-white Warblers begged their par-
ents to be fed. I also visited Bastrop’s
neighboring state park, Buescher
State Park, but it was growing late in
the day and few birds were singing. I
did get an excellent view of a North-

further east, at Lake Somerville State
Park. Like before, I was too tired to
search for birds, but a family of titmice
came to me.
The next day I visited Washington-
on-the-Brazos State Historical Area.
The titmice were elusive here. How-
ever, the morning highlight was five
Red-shouldered Hawks circling in
flight and having a screaming match.
Occasionally one of the hawks would
dive at one of the others. I also saw a
lovely Louisiana Waterthrush foraging
I visited Stephen F. Austin State Park.
The titmice were much more coopera-
tive there and I also spotted a big rac-
coon lumbering in a brush pile. Many
signs warned me not to feed the rac-
coon. I didn’t; I wanted to eat my lunch
myself anyway.
At this point in the trip I only had
a few more days left to make it to the
Texas coast, where the titmice obvious-
ly stop since they don’t live out in the
Gulf of Mexico. That’s where we’ll pick
up again next month. Whether you are
on the road or at home, keep your eyes
peeled. You never know what surprises

Wildlife Service, duck num-
bers are on the increase
and prospects are excellent
for a good duck season this
fall.
Mallard numbers are es-
timated at 8.5 million, a 10-
percent increase over last
year and 13 percent above
the long-term average. Gad-
walls number 3.1 million,
73 percent above the long-
term average. Blue-winged
teal numbers are estimated
at 7.4 million, which is the
second highest on record.
Pintail are up 23 percent
over last year with 3.2 mil-
lion birds. Even the canvas-
back have made a remark-
able comeback with 662,000
last year.

in North Dakota, which
is in the center of the pot
hole nesting region in the
United States, reports that
he’s seen more ducks on the
ponds and small lakes in
the area than ever before.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife re-
ports estimate there are 6.4
million acres of prime nest-
ing ponds and lakes in the
northern U.S. and Canada.
Ducks Unlimited can be
thanked for much of this
success story. Chances are
pretty good there will be
a DU fundraiser banquet
in your area in upcoming
