Dear Neil: We have a peach
orchard behind our house.
A tangle of trees, shrubs and
vines is up against their side
of our common fence, and the
briars that come through to
our yard are awful. I have
both dug and sprayed them,
and nothing seems to help.
What advice can you offer?
You’re probably talking
about smilax briars, the spiny
vines with glossy, heart-
shaped leaves. They are bad!
They have unusual root sys-
tems that consist of many
woody, stem-like sub-surface
roots and large, swollen tu-
bers just beneath the soil sur-
face. In both cases, it’s difficult
to get enough broadleafed
weedkiller (containing 2,4-D)
onto the limited numbers of
leaves and then down into the
stems and roots. Unless the
plants have been growing for
several years and have luxu-
riant top growth, spraying
usually doesn’t help much.
Repeated mowing eventu-
ally chokes most of it out. The
first cutting, of course, must
be done with a brush cutter

your case, however, is that
you don’t have access to the
other side of the fence, so the
mother plants are remaining
healthy. Talk to the owner,
and see if you can get permis-
sion to mow five or 10 feet on
their side of the fence to es-
tablish a better break. Short
of doing that, your problems
will continue.
Dear Neil: What would
cause a 6-foot-tall agave to
wilt, dry and die back? It has
not been over-watered, and it
did fine the first three years of
its life in its current location.
Nothing has been sprayed
nearby.
That’s perplexing. You’re
right – it does sound like it
might have been over-wa-
tered. If it’s on a berm or
other well-draining upland
location, that won’t be a con-
sideration. About the only
other thing I’ve ever seen
bother agaves in that way
is the decline they face after
they bloom. If your plant hap-
pened to send up a floral stalk
this year, this is the next step
before the mother plant dies.
There should be a wealth of
new plants (“pups”) showing
up at the same time. How-
ever, since you didn’t mention
flowers, that’s probably not
the case. Sorry I couldn’t be
more definitive.

That’s one of the most-asked
Texas gardening questions of
the summer. It’s usually just
a reflection of summer’s hot
weather. Usually, bougainvil-
leas that have been over-win-
tered in a sunroom or green-
house will enter the spring
with a big round of blooms.
You’ll usually see a second
bloom cycle in early fall,
just as temperatures start
to break. Keep your plant
somewhat root-bound, and
use very little fertilizer. High
levels of nutrition will cause
rampant vegetative growth
– not good for flowering.
Dear Neil: My wife and
I have just moved into our
house a few weeks ago, and
we’d like to convert a plot of
lush lawn into a garden. I
have heard that we can con-
vert from grass to garden by
putting down a layer of card-
board and paper, topped with
organic soil and compost/pot-
ting soil. That layer, I guess,
kills the grass while the soil is
made ready for spring plant-
ings. Any other suggestions?
My short answer is that
that’s not the way I would do
it myself. I’ll start by saying
that gardens aren’t very pret-
ty when they’re empty, which
is one-third to half of the year.

Smokeless tobacco, contains up to 28
agents that are known to cause cancer.
Smokeless tobacco users specifically in-
crease their risk for cancers of the lip,
tongue, cheeks and gums. Along with
the many carcinogens, smokeless tobac-
co products contain the same highly ad-
dictive substance as cigarettes do, called
nicotine.
Other documented health problems
associated with dipping and chewing
tobacco range from the development of
pre-cancerous sores in the mouth, bad
breath, tooth loss and pancreatic cancer.
A study cited by the American Cancer
Society found that almost 75 percent
risk of developing cancer.
A relatively new smokeless tobacco
product that is now being marketed
in the U.S. is called snus. It is a form
of moist powder tobacco that is placed
under the lip for an extended period of
time. Although it has fewer cancer-caus-
ing substances, using snus is still con-
sidered a health hazard
There are many benefits that come
from quitting smokeless tobacco prod-
ucts. The majority of people decide to
quit these products to limit or protect
themselves from the numerous health
problems mentioned previously. Because
purchasing tobacco products on a regu-
lar basis can be very expensive, many
people choose to quit after realizing the
amount of money they could be saving.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service
provides a Web tool that can be used to
calculate how much money you spend
on smokeless tobacco products per year
and other items you can buy with that

Sarah Jorgenson has been
creative all her life. As a stu-
dent, she designed graphs
for sports statistics. When
decoupage was popular, she
enjoyed that. She remem-
bers doing chalk talks.
The 1956 graduate of De-
catur High School decided
several years ago to use
those creative juices to start
a business, Etc. by Sarah.
She designs and creates cus-
tom jewelry.
The designs come natu-
rally for her and she said
they are guided by a higher
power.
“I ask the Holy Spirt to
give me creative ideas. I
never make two alike,” she
said.
She designs necklaces,
earrings and bracelets in
what she calls “chunky” jew-
elry. She is drawn to larger
stones because that’s what
she likes to wear.
“I find that what I like is
what everybody else likes,”
she said. “I am very fashion
conscious. Nothing puts you
together like accessories.”
She keeps up with fashion
trends and colors and cre-
ates jewelry to go along with
those trends. She checks
catalogues and magazines
for trends but the ideas just
seem to flow once she starts
the design process.
She is very particular
about the beads she uses.
They must be perfect to
make it into one of her cre-
ations.
For many years, she sold
her jewelry at Mada’s in
Bridgeport. Owner Mary
Helen Findley often called
on her to design accessories
to complement particular
outfits for individual cus-
tomers.
“Mary Helen knew her
customers,” Jorgenson said.
