Introduction

Guests have a certain expectation when sending their clothes for laundry, that it will be
done efficiently and competently. Also, you need to ensure that the guests laundry is
delivered back to them according to their expectations with no damage or loss will
occur.
A good laundry facility ensures the following:
Careful handling of guest items while laundering;
Speedy process to meet with operational requirements;
Correct washing procedure and use of suitable laundry chemicals;
Provide sound policies regarding damages or loss;
Carry out accurate counting of guest item; and
Precise records must be maintained to avoid shortages of linen/guest laundry items.

Laundry Attendant
The Laundry Attendant is responsible in collecting and washing dirty clothes of
customers and hotel beddings and uniforms. They also perform ironing, folding and the
distribution of laundry items to its designated destination.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Counts articles to verify quantities on laundry requisitions.
Tag, sort and pre-treat guests laundry items in accordance with organizational
requirements.
Inspect guest items for damages and stains and report any damages to the
laundry supervisor.
Ensure the proper use, storage and maintenance of laundry equipment, tools and
supplies.
Perform spot cleaning procedure on heavy soiled/ stained and contaminated
articles.
Perform washing of guest items according to propertys standard procedures.
Perform mending and repair of guest garments.
Fold and place laundry item in appropriate storage area.

Operate laundry machinery such as washers, driers and ironers.


Perform pressing / ironing according to prescribed procedures.
Responsible for sewing or mending of guest clothes.
Figure bills to be attached to guest laundry.
Clean and maintain work areas.
Transport clean laundry to storage areas.
Perform other duties as maybe assigned by the supervisor

The guest laundry process is initiated by a resident guest who desires to have his/her
clothes washed, dry clean, or pressed.

The guest place the soiled garments and laundry list inside the laundry bag
The guest may call the laundry department or he/ she can hang a laundry

Procedure of Receiving Guest Call

Answer the telephone promptly


Mention your department and your first name
Ask the name of the caller including room number
Provide assistance
Listen attentively to the request and take notes if necessary:

The name of the client

Room number


Urgency of the item to be laundered

During conversation, repeat the name of your client and room number
Repeat the request of the guest
Ask the guest if they still need more assistance
Bid the guest goodbye and remember to say thank you

Introduction
A guest may avail of laundry service by either calling the Housekeeping Desk and a
Room Attendant is sent to collect the laundry alternatively, if the Laundry is on premises,
the Order-taker in the Laundry cabin will receive the call and the Valet Runner will
collect the laundry. If the hotel provides a Laundry Hanger, the guest may hang this out
on the doorknob indicating that there is laundry for collection.
The laundry attendant should follow the company's policies and procedures for
collecting laundry.

Procedure for Collecting Laundry Items from


Guestroom
1. Proceed to the guest's room and knock on the door three (3) times and announce
Laundry Service".
2. When the guest open the door, inform the guest that you came to collect guest
laundry.
3. Ask premission from the guest to count and check the items to be laundered.
4. Tally the count with your own physical count.
5. Write the correct number of items laundry request form.
6. Notify the guest for any discrepancies.
7. Check if the guest has filled-in the laundry list. Look for the following:

The name of the client

Room number

Date
Urgency of services according to guest request
Guests signature

Ask the guest if he/she need additional help or if they have additional request
Bid the guest goodbye and remember to say thank you.

have to be checked.

Receiving Guest Laundry


1. Place the laundry bag that contains dirty clothes in the receiving area
2. Note the time when guest item is being receive
3. Check laundry list accordingly

Count number of each item

Make sure that the numbers of the laundry items correspond with the

3 Tag each laundry Item
4 Record guest laundry according to company procedures. You should write the
following in the control record book:

Name of the Guest

Room No.

Record express service with required delivery time

Place guest date of departure (if needed)


If the guest is expected to depart on the same day, charges should be
made immediately and send a receipt to the Front Office
5 Report any discrepancies to your supervisor, e.g.

Shortage of guest items to documentation

Heavily stained or damaged items

Check each garment for damage such as: fading color, stains, missing buttons,
tears
7 Shake out any loose items or soils wrapped up in the garment
8 All express items must immediately be handed over to the washer or dry
cleaning operator
9 Put all dirty items to the various sorting baskets supplied for this purpose
10 Report to the Laundry Manager or to the person concerned any unusual
condition, including valuable items left by the guest

clothes and dark-colored clothes together.

Introduction
Most clothing labels will have written instructions and the image of care labels will
provide helpful information that can save time and money. The care label describes the
allowable treatment of the garment without damaging the textile. Whether you can read
the language on the tag or not, the image will tell you what to do with the item.
The care label will determine the process to be used for washing as well as for ironing
each garment. Some labels will also tell you what type of chemicals to use. Failure to
read these labels carefully may result in damaged items, which will result in guest
complaints and the property will also have to pay the guest for damaged items.

Machine wash symbols
On clothes that you may machine wash, you will find a symbol that looks like
a cup with a wavy line that indicates water.

Bleaching symbols
A triangle symbol on the care label will tell you if you could bleach the fabric.
A triangle means you may bleach the item as needed and you can use any
bleach on the fabric.

A triangle with lines or shading means you can only use non-chlorine bleach.

Do not use bleach the fabric if you see a triangle with an X on it.

Drying Symbols

A square symbol indicates drying instructions.

If the square has a circle in it, then you can put the item in the dryer.

If the circle is black, tumble dry only with no heat.

If it has a single small dot, use low heat

If it has two dots, use medium heat.

If it has three dots, use high heat.

A single line under the symbol means use permanent press setting.

Two lines under the symbol means use gentle cycle setting.

An X over the symbol with a circle means do not tumble dry.

Three vertical lines mean to line dry.

Horizontal dash mean the item should be dried flat.

Ironing Symbols

The ironing symbol is a simple representation of an iron.

One dot on the iron symbol means use low heat.

Two dots on the iron symbol means use medium heat

Three dots on the iron symbol means use high heat

Two vertical lines under the iron with an X means do not use steam.

An X on the iron symbol means do not iron.

Introduction
Stains are one of the greatest challenges to all Laundry personnels. When
laundering stained clothing, it is best to remove a stain before it dries and sets. Always
check the type of stain and identify the type fabric before employing spotting procedure.

See and follow care label found in the collar or side seam of the garment.
Read and follow package directions of the product to be use.
Pre-clean the garment by blotting or scraping. Place the stained area face down on a
clean paper towel or white cloth.
Check for colorfastness by testing the stain remover on the unseen area of the item to
avoid damage on the fabric.
Gently scrub the stain-remover on the wrong side of the garment.
Continue to soak and scrub until the stain has disappeared.
Launder the garment.

TIP

For liquid stain, first blot the stain, do not rub, to absorb excess liquid before it
soaks in deeper.

For solid stains, such as mud, you should scrape it off with a butter knife before you attempt
to clean the stain.

Introduction
Washing machines may have different technology, but ultimately have the same
features and purposes. They all require the proper settings, soap, water and clothes to
wash.

Laundering with a Washing Machine

Read and follow your washing machine owner's manual.


Check the condition of the washing machine specially the electrical plugs and
wires.
3. Weight the laundry items.
4. Select appropriate load size.

Add washing cleaning agents and chemicals following the recommended quantity
for specific load size.
6. Load your clothes loosely into the washing machine. Load the laundry as high as
your owner's manual specifies or to the top row of holes in the tub.
7. Close the lid and set the controls of your washing machine according to what you
are washing.

Set the water level: The level of water should depend on the
quantity/weight of items to be laundered.

Adjust the water temperature of the washing machine:

Use hot temperature if garments are heavily soiled or white in


color.

Use warm temperature for bright colors and lightly soiled items.

Adjust to cold temperature if items are for permanent press.


8. Select the right wash cycle and time.

Use super wash cycle for heavily soiled items.

Regular wash cycle is appropriate for light soiled ones.


9. Set Spinning and rinsing cycle
10. Turn on your washing machine. Allow it to work through all of the cycles and turn
itself off before you unload the washed laundry.
11. Remove laundry items from the tub when the buzzer sounds.

Introduction
Ironing is the use of a heated tool -an iron to remove wrinkles from fabric. The
heating is commonly done to a temperature of 180220 Celsius, depending on the
fabric. Ironed clothes show that an individual is taking pride in his appearance.

Preparation

Ironing board

Water sprayer (optional)

Clean damp cloth

2. Check the cleanliness and condition of flat iron and ironing board before starting
to work.
3. Set the ironing board.
4. Consult care label of the fabric for ironing temperature.

Correct order of ironing a shirt:

Put a damp cloth on top of the ironing board. Clean the iron by rubbing it on the
damp cloth.
Start the process by ironing the collar:

Flatten the back of the collar on the surface of the board

Run the iron over the back of the collar several times until you are sure it
is correctly pressed.
c.
Turn the shirt over and iron the front of the collar, follow the same ironing
procedure used for the back of the collar
Next iron the sleeves:
a.
Lay the back of the sleeve on the ironing board
b.
Stretch the fabric by using the palm of your hand
c.
Iron the back of the sleeves
d.
Flip the shirt over and iron the front of the sleeves
Iron the body part of the shirt:

Start with the left upper side of the shirt; flatten the fabric by using the
palm of your hand.

Iron straight upwards keeping good tension all the time.

Iron the seam by running the edge of the iron over the stitching while
pulling with the other hand.

Continue moving the shirt towards you bit-by-bit, ironing one section at a
time.

Move in and out of the buttons taking care not to hit the buttons by going
too fast.

Continue this way remembering to hold the shirt by the collar all the time
while pulling against the force of the iron to give a crisp finish.
Hang the pressed shirt with a hanger.

Turn on the iron and set to correct temperature


Clean the iron by putting it on top of a damp face towel
Iron the pockets
Iron the fly, seams and hems
Iron the waist band
Hold the pants on the lower part of the leg
Fold the leg of the pants together
Lay the folded pants on the ironing board
Pull out the pockets and iron it
Fold one leg up, allow it to overlap the waist
Iron in a circular motion, start working from the cuff to the pocket
Iron down to the leg smoothly creating only one straight line
Fold the other leg back down and iron as you did on the first leg. Make sure in
seams are align with each other
14. Turn the pants over and lay the pants on the ironing board
15. Match up the in seam and the side seam so that they are directly over each other
16. Iron down the leg to create a permanent crease
17. Turn off the iron and let it cool down before putting it away.
18. Hang from the waist or fold the pants

Ironing Dress

Iron all parts that have a double thickness such as collars, hems, cuff, sleeves,
bows, ties and pocket and other parts that have double thickness.
2. Iron non flat portions like ruffles, shoulders, and puffed sleeves.
3. To iron puffed sleeves, stuff them with whiter cloth or towel.
4. Iron the body of the cloth starting on the upper portion of the garment.

Fold guest items properly after the washing and ironing processes.

Introduction
Folding is an art and doing it correctly can help us to become organized. It helps
to prevent garments from wrinkling and therefore it can also avoid re-ironing, re-washing
and drying. Before yon start folding, the garment must be flat and wrinkle-free, and the
fabric must remain nicely spread out throughout the folding process to keep garments
free of creases.

Folding Shirt

Button the top and third button.


Lay the shirt face down.
Smooth out the shirt so it is flat on the front and back.
The first fold is right side:

Fold about one-third of the body towards the center of the shirt.

The fold line starts at the center of the shoulder and ends at the tail.
Neatly fold the sleeve forward, creating an angled fold at the shoulder. The
sleeve should line up with the edge of the first body fold.
Fold the left side in the same manner.
Make a fold of several inches of the shirttail.
Fold up the bottom half of the partially folded shirt. The tail should be just behind
the collar of the shirt.
Turn the entire shirt over.

Introduction
When delivering guest articles, some will be folded while others are placed on
hangers. Folded articles are put together in a laundry bag or box with the room number
written on it, for hanging articles put a label indicating the name of guest and room
number.

Make sure that the correct number of pieces on guest laundry list is ready to be
returned.
Follow complete records and billing information in accordance with enterprise
procedures.
Package and present guest laundry in accordance with enterprise standards and
procedures. Wrap the laundry box and put a piece of your propertys giveaway
(optional).
For folded items, attach the laundry slip by sticking on the box, in a visible
manner.
For hanged items, put a tie label indicating the name of the guest and room
number.
Return finished items to guest in accordance with required timeframe.
Store processed guest laundry when required, according to guest requests or
when returning the laundry item to guests is not possible
