Primary focus of this course is to introduce students to the modern topics in photonics that is photonic
crystals, plasmonics and metamaterials. To make the course complete the topics to be covered include
the basics, applications, ways to design, fabricate and characterize the structures. Details of the topics
are given below. This course would be useful for students interested in Photonics as well as those in
Material Science with interest in nanofabrication and optical characterization.
Introduction : These lectures cover the role of photonics in information processing covering both
classical and quantum communication and computing. Present interest in all-optical devices and
integrated optical circuits.
Photonic Crystals : Topics to be covered include concept of photonic crystals and theory of photonic
crystals, defect in photonic crystals, light manipulation using defects in photonic crystals
waveguiding, light localization in microcavities, enhancement of optical nonlinearities and all-optical
devices. Numerical methods to simulate and design photonic crystals.
Plasmonics or Nanophotonics : Concepts of surface and localized plasmon modes; ways to probe
these modes; applications of surface plasmon polaritons in waveguiding, surface enhanced raman
scattering, imaging and sensing and applications of localized plasmons in lasing, sensing,
enhancement in emission; Nanophotonic or sub-wavelength optical components for integrated optics.
Metamaterials : Introduction to metamaterials, theory of metamaterials, interesting phenomena using
metamaterials like negative index materials, slow light, inverse Doppler effect, cloaking.
Nanofabrication : Covers fabrication techniques used for photonic crystals and metamaterials like
bottom-up (based on optical techniques and self-assembly) and top-down (photo-, interference and ebeam lithography) techniques. Also will be covered are different techniques for deposition of thin
films and etching.
Optical Characterization : Laser spectroscopy for absorption and emission; nonlinear optical
techniques; ultrafast techniques to measure various time scales governing carrier dynamics. Tentative
techniques to be covered are time resolved photoluminescence, four wave mixing, pump-probe,
Hanbury Brown- Twiss (for single photon emission characterization), time correlated single photon
counting among others.
