Quality and equitable education for all.

Many students may tell their parents that they do not need assistance with homework or their
grades. Then the report card comes home and the parents find that the grades on the report card tell
a different story. Her are a few suggestions to help your child be a successful student:

Meet with your child and ask them what assignments they are working on. Each George
Washington student should have some type of homework each and every night.

Provide a quiet place for your child to study. Students need a specific place where they can
do their homework each night.

Make sure your child gets a good nights sleep.

Eat a healthy breakfast-Students need to eat a healthy breakfast so they can concentrate in
class.

Get to school and each class on time- Many students are late to school each morning. As a
reminder, Washington High School has a 5-day cut list. If a student is tardy a minimum of 3
times in one class, he or she is given one cut. After 5 cuts, the student is put on the 5-day cut list
and he or she cannot participate in school activities such as dances or sports during time that he
or she is on the cut list. In addition, if a student returns late from lunch more than four times he
or she is automatically put on the cut list. The cut list is complied monthly.

Meet with your childs counselor. Schedule a meeting with your childs counselor to discuss
how to improve their grades and attendance. One of the tools that students can use is a daily or
weekly progress report so that the teachers can report the progress in class to the parents and
students. The progress report is a general check-in with the teacher regarding the progress for a
specific period of time (daily or weekly).

Be in contact with the teachers so that the teachers know that the student is concerned about
his or her grades and wants to do better. You can contact teachers via School Loop.

Get involved in the school-There are many ways busy parents can participate at GWHS. The
PTSA is a great way to start. Attend concerts, sporting events, plays, speech contests and even
dances!
