The new curriculums expectation is significantly higher than the previous National Curriculum. It also
places greater emphasis on skills such as arithmetic, fractions, comprehension, grammar and spelling.
Therefore, your child may be currently working at a year groups expectations below their own age
related. For example, a child in Year 4, who finds Maths difficult, may be developing the knowledge,
skills and understanding expected of a Year 3 child. They would be assessed as Year 3 Developing. So
they are working below what is expected. To help them catch up to meet their year groups expectations
in the future, they will begin learning their year groups content as soon as they reach Secure rather
than Mastered. The tier of Mastered is only relevant when a child is working within their current year
group.

Year 1 Mastered

In subjects outside English, Maths and Science, expectations are set out across 2 year groups (Year 1&2,
Year 3&4, Year 5&6) so your child may be Y3&4 Entering+ at the end of Year 3 but they may meet
expectations (Y3&4 Secure) by the end of Year 4.
In a couple of weeks or so, you will receive your childs end of year report summarizing their progress, effort and
achievement.
Owing to considerable governmental change this year in areas of curriculum and assessment, I would very much
like to invite you to read the information written overleaf, which will hopefully help our school community
make sense of the changes that have taken place.
Very simply, the new curriculums expectation is significantly higher than the previous National Curriculum. It
also places greater emphasis on skills such as arithmetic, fractions, comprehension, grammar and spelling.
I do help this helps prepare you for information contained within your childs report.
Kind regards,
Christopher Shields
