The properties of overbased calcium sulphonates have
been know for a long time, but for many years it has been
difficult to manufacture satisfactory lubricating greases
based on this chemistry due to unacceptable
performance properties, such as poor pumpability and
inadequate low temperature behaviour.

However we have successfully developed a patented

super complexing process, modifying the properties of
the calcium sulphonates to eliminate these drawbacks
and allow the production of a grease with exceptional
properties. Thus a truly remarkable technological
breakthrough exclusive to TOTAL was made, which
showed that a reduction in consumption of up to 50% vs
classical greases can be achieved with CERAN.

Remarkable properties

HARDENING DURING USE:

No problem for TOTAL CERAN in centralised lubrication systems
Conventional calcium complex greases have a tendency to
harden too quickly in centralised lubrication systems. This is
not a problem with the TOTAL CERAN technology. As shown
in tests, it maintains excellent pumpability in the course of time,
whatever the temperature variations.

In the 4-ball EP test, a load of 500 kg is sustained by TOTAL

CERAN before the four balls weld together (ASTM D2596).

MECHANICAL STABILITY AND HIGH SHEAR RESISTANCE:

TOTAL CERAN withstands the harshest treatment
Tests show that after working for more than 100,000 strokes
(ASTM D217) TOTAL CERAN does not deteriorate. Even when
intensively squeezed between the inside of a hollow cylinder
and a heavy metal roller (Roll stability test) for 100 hours at 80C
(ASTM D1831), it does not show any loss of properties.

THE PERFORMANCE: Mechanical Stability

OXIDATION RESISTANCE:
Safer running with TOTAL CERAN
A grease which oxidises too rapidly may suddenly lose its
lubricating properties. Tests show the superior oxidation
resistance of TOTAL CERAN.
When grease is placed in a sealed container, in the presence of
oxygen under pressure at 100C, a pressure drop of 0.3 bar
after 100 hours corresponds to 2 years of normal storage life.
With TOTAL CERAN such a pressure drop is only recorded
after 500 hours.
In another test, a TOTAL CERAN grease film is heated in an
oven for 100 hours at 150C and still retains its normal texture,
whereas other greases bake or are transformed into a brownish
resin on the applied surface. Safety guaranteed.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
TOTAL CERAN withstands even sea water

A truly multi-purpose grease must not only resist to high

temperatures but also continue to operate satisfactorily at low
temperatures. The starting resistance at -20C measured in a
ball bearing running at 1 rpm (ASTM D1478) and lubricated by
TOTAL CERAN is extremely low. Some TOTAL CERAN grades
comply even at -40C. Therefore for all practical purposes the
serviceability ranges from -40C to +180C.

Even when subjected to severe bearing tests: 6 hours at 160C

and 660 rpm (ASTM D1263), TOTAL CERAN does not leak or
harden, which shows an excellent life span in long duration
heavy duty service at high temperatures.

LOW TEMPERATURE PERFORMANCE:

TOTAL CERAN remains easily pumpable

The three accepted standard thermal stability tests (Dropping

point, leakage and lubrication life) show that TOTAL CERAN
does not liquefy until a temperature of over 300C is reached,
which represents a remarkable performance. Furthermore, on
reverting to room temperature, it integrally recovers its
structure, unlike other complex greases which are also
considered to be high-grade speciality lubricants.

By their own nature, modified sulphonates are corrosion

resistant. A ball bearing filled with TOTAL CERAN and
operated for 8 days when contaminated with water, shows no
signs of corrosion (EMCOR test), even though no rust inhibitor
has been added, as necessary with other types of grease.
Even better, in the ASTM B117-73 test, classical greases
applied at a thickness of 1.5 mm to a metal plate and subjected
to a salt water spray, show corrosion within 24 hours. It takes
1,000 hrs under the same conditions before it occurs with
TOTAL CERAN.

WATER RESISTANCE:
No leaching out or softening of TOTAL CERAN
In many applications, lubricating greases are in contact with
water or are subjected to repeated washing. The greases must
not be removed by the mechanical action, or become softened
by water absorption.
Even when mixed with 50% water and worked for 100,000
strokes TOTAL CERAN will maintain its consistency (ASTM
D217). In a test bearing which is subjected to a constant stream
of water, it completely resists leaching out (ASTM D1264).
TOTAL CERAN retains its remarkable performance properties
in the presence of water.

A multi-purpose grease is sometimes exposed to Extreme

TOTAL CERAN AD (NLGI 0) is an adhesive

heavy duty grease designed for use on slide rails,
metal cables, wire ropes, winches, open gears
and chains working in severe circumstances.

TOTAL CERAN GEP (NLGI 0) is a heavy duty

grease containing solid lubricants designed for
use on open gears of rotary drum drives, single
and double pinion kiln and mill drives, working
under severe circumstances.

TOTAL CERAN MM (NLGI 2) is a true multipurpose grease, formulated for lubrication of

loaded slide-, ball-, and roller- bearings,
(wheelbearings), universal joints, chassis, and
various shock loaded or vibrating components in
industry, transport, off-road, marine and off shore
applications operating in very severe wet, dusty
and/or dry conditions.

TOTAL CERAN MS (NLGI 1) is suitable for the

lubrication of all kinds of components subject
to high loads, shocks and vibrations working in
conditions where grease is in frequent contact
with water, e.g. travelling cranes, crown wheels,
press joints, conveyors, gear couplings etc. in a
multitude of industrial applications.

TOTAL CERAN MS is suitable for boundary

lubrication at high pressures and high
temperature. In case of accidental overheating,
the presence of molybdenum disulfide will
guarantee good lubrication, and avoid any
jamming or sticking.

TOTAL CERAN PM (NLGI 1.5) is an Extreme

Pressure grease, pre-eminently designed for the
lubrication of industrial bearings working under
high temperatures and high loads in the paper
industry (e.g. bearings in wet and dry sections).

TOTAL CERAN WR is a multi-purpose heavy

duty grease, formulated for the lubrication of all
kinds of industrial, marine and off shore
applications, operating under the most severe
conditions (water, heat, dust and other pollution).
