As a result of his
experience on the
Rhine,
Humboldt
decided to pursue a
career as a scientific
explorer.
He
set
himself to learning
astronomy, geology,
anatomy and botanical
science. His early
travels were mostly
confined to Europe
but, after the death of
his mother in 1792, he
