disappearing ink marker, mate Trimmer II, lining up fabric to the square, then use the ruler to find the perfect
Fray Check bias. (it’s marked on the mat as the 90 degree angle)
4. Cut cording in half so you have two pieces 18” long.
5. Using the Freestyle Mouse, and a variety of decorative blades (I used the 2812
Stamp, 2809 Victorian, 2806 Pinking, and 2803 Scallop) cut various strips of silk bias
Purple Cows, Inc for flowers varying from 1 ½” wide to 3” wide tapering to a point at one end. These

making the wider strips longer. I like to make a handful of strips in lots of sizes, so I

www.purplecows.net can play with different flowers on the purse until I get a grouping I like.

6. Using any decorative blade cut several leaf shapes (a heart
with a deep center V—see diagram) from a silk remnant.
7. Sew optional dart in upper side/bottom pieces.
8. With right sides together, sew the center seam on side/
bottom pieces using a ¼” seam allowance. Press open seam
allowances and stitch down if desired. (I like to do this to give
the seam more strength and to keep the seam allowances
flat.)
9. With wrong side together, sew purse front to side/bottom
panel matching dots using a 3/8” seam allowance. Repeat
with purse back.
10. Generously Fray Check each seam beginning and end.
11. Fold along the dashed line towards the outside, creating a cas-
ing for the handles. Sew ¼” from cut edge.
12. Fold 18” bias strips in half lengthwise and sew a ½” seam al-
lowance creating two tubes.
13. Turn the tubes inside out (I don’t trim the seam allowance if
the fabric is lightweight)
14. Thread the cording through the turned handle covers.
15. Thread one handle (covered cording) through the sewn casing
on purse front.
16. To join handle ends, hand stitch ends together being careful to
match the seams. Using a remnant of fabric or a small piece
of ribbon, cover the sewn joint and hand stitch in place. (This
not only makes the seam look nicer, it gives the joint stability.)
Apply fray check liberally to the joint as you stitch.
17. Repeat steps 12 and 13 for purse back.
18. After Fray Check has dried, thread handles through casing so
the joint is centered inside the casing.

19. To make flowers: using a needle and thread, sew a run-
ning stitch down the center of each strip starting at
wide end and ending at the tapered edge. Leave nee-
dle and thread attached – do not knot. **Tip** Do not
try to make this perfectly straight or even, it gives the
flowers more shape if the stitches are a little “off”.
20. Pull thread to gather flower, do not cut thread. Holding
the top tapered edge, twist clockwise slowly until a
flower shape forms. Using the thread, stitch down
through all the layers to secure the flower shape several
times. Be patient, once you find your groove, these
flowers will come together quickly. Repeat for all flow-
ers.
21. Gather the center of the leaf shape to give the leaves a
little dimension (see diagram.)
22. Place leaves and flowers on purse front, hand stitch in
place.
23. Add a few beads to some of the flowers for some di-
mension.
24. HAVE FUN!
25. **Options** I made an unlined purse, but the pattern is
easily adapted for lining. Cut front, back, and side/
bottom panel from lining fabric. Assemble just like
purse, Steps 7, except sew with right sides together.
Turn lining inside out, put inside purse and line up the
casing edges. Fold over lining with purse to create the
casing on front and back (lining will show.) Complete
Step 8.
