Islamic Eid a true gift from God

Mustenser Ahmad Qamar

ore than 1.6 billion

Muslims
around
the world will be
celebrating the occasion of
Eid-ul-Fitr over the weekend,
which marks the end of the
holiest month of the Islamic
calendar, Ramadan.
Surely, it is a time to rejoice.
A time of happiness and joy. One
may think that the long arduous
month of fasting and abstaining
from food, drink and the
pleasures of the world is finally
over. The burden has finally been
released and now is a time to
relax, eat and enjoy. Not quite.
Ramadan is a month of blessings;
a spiritually enlightening month
for reformation, realisation and
reflection and by no means a
burden. The celebration of Eid is
in actual fact a commemoration
of many positive changes brought
about in a Muslim.
Whether it is Christmas,
Diwali, Remembrance Day or
Independence Day, all these
occasions have a significance
in reminding people of an
important message or historical

event. Likewise, the celebration

of Eid has a much greater and
deeper significance. Eid is a
time to reflect over spiritual
improvement and resolve not to
lose what one has gained during
the month of Ramadan, rather,
not only to maintain it but also
to press forward to even higher
spiritual and moral gains.

The main event of the Eid

celebration is the additional sixth
prayer on the day of Eid. This in
itself demonstrates that the true
purpose of Eid is to be reminded
of the Creator, to turn to Him
for help and strength to pursue
and proceed in the acquisition of
higher spiritual and moral gains.
Eid is a reminder to Muslims

to not only struggle and toil for

spiritual gain for one month, but
also to keep that progress going
throughout the year.
The occasion of Eid reminds
Muslims of another lesson learnt
during the month of Ramadan;
to spend on the poor and needy.
Fitrana is a compulsory donation
from Muslims to the poor and

needy before the Eid celebration.

This enjoins Muslims to celebrate
and rejoice with every member
of the society and help the poor
and needy throughout the year.
The underlying message given by
Islam is to include all members of
society, regardless of their race,
colour, creed or faith, in times of
happiness and joy.
During my time at a university
in London, I remember going
door-to-door
distributing
boxes of chocolates in our
neighbourhood with my fellow
Muslim brothers. The faces of
fear of seeing a Muslim at their
doorsteps quickly changed to
smiles when the message of peace
and love with a box of chocolates
was given. I recall the Eid parties
where hundreds of guests were
invited to join our happiness.
Eid reminds me of the days when
members of our community
celebrate by visiting old peoples
homes, hospitals and hospices
with sweets, chocolates and food
packs to share their happiness.
This year is no different. The
relatively small community across
New Zealand along with millions
of members spanning more than

206 countries will be carrying

on this tradition of reaching
out to the wider communities,
neighbours, the poor and
the needy.
Eid for Muslims is a reminder
of the true teachings of Islam;
teachings of love, peace, harmony
and integration. While some
people spread their un-Islamic
teachings in the name of religion,
we are committed to continue
in our struggle to correct and
dispel the wrong distorted image
of Islam presented by these
extremist factions, by spreading
the message of love and peace
taught to us through the paragon
of the prophet Muhammad and
presented to us through the
peaceful teachings of Islam.

black pepper
}} 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
}} 3-4 sprigs fresh mint
}} 1/4 cup olive oil
}} 2 cups Saffron Road Culinary

Instructions
}} Preheat the oven to 425 F.
}} Prepare the lamb directly in
its roasting pan. Sprinkle the
sea salt on top.
}} Remove peels from fresh
garlic then place each clove
under the netting. If the roast
does not have netting, simply

Pour some of the juices from
the bottom on top of the
meat, too.
}} Continue roasting for another
2.5 to 3 hours, checking the
meat for dryness and pouring
juices over the top, as needed.
Alternatively, you can cover
the meat with foil. If doing
that, poke holes in the foil to
allow some air to escape.
}} Once the 2.5 hours has passed,
insert a meat thermometer
to check the temperature.
The middle of the roast
should read at least 165 F.
If its done, remove from
oven and let rest, covered;
if not, continue cooking for
another 20-30 minutes and
check again.
}} Remove the garlic cloves and
the herbs before slicing. Once
sliced, reserve the liquids for
dipping or pour directly over
the meat slices before serving.

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, National List MP

n this very auspicious day of Eid-ul-Fitr, I wish all
my brothers and sisters Happy Eid. Eid-ul-fitr is the
culmination of the holy month of Ramadan. During
Ramadan our Muslim brothers and sisters fast for a whole
month from dawn to sunset. Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of
whole months fasting period. Very fittingly Eid refers to celebrations or festivities

and Fitr refers to breaking the fast.

For our Muslim brotherhood it is the time of year we rejoice and thank Allah. It
is also the time when all of us have the opportunity to reflect on our lives. Fasting
reminds us of how fortunate we are and of our responsibility to the less fortunate

than ourselves.
As National Member of Parliament of ethnic background, I was invited to attend
the iftar parties. It was great to meet and greet people from different backgrounds
there. I value the contributions of our Muslim Community. By sharing our culture
with the rest of New Zealand, we add to the vibrancy and diversity that makes New
Zealand a truly multicultural nation.
I hope that all of you enjoy the festivities of Eid.
Once again I wish all of you a very happy Eid.

Andrew Little, Labour Party Leader

It is with great pleasure that I join in celebrating

Eid al-Fitr with New Zealands Muslims.
This holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the
holy month of fasting. It is a time for inner reflection and
thanksgiving.
I think its significant that the Muslim community marks this day
with gifts to
the poor and needy and offers special prayers for peace and harmon
y around the
world.
Labour values its relationship with New Zealands Muslim commu
nity and my
family and I wish the Muslim families of New Zealand all the best.

Squash
Junior
World
Championship starts on July 26 in
Netherlands and the New Zealand
Team is practicing vigorously for the big
game. Juee Bhide, one of the three top
contenders playing for New Zealand, is
thrilled for the matches ahead.
I have been training 12 to 15 hours
a week for the last couple of months
and putting all my efforts to get better,
says Juee.
Juee, currently ranks 3rd in the New
Zealand U-19 Squash, got the confirmation
from Squash NZ on May 21 that she will be
competing in the World Championship in
Netherlands this month.
Juee has been coaching under Manu Yem
twice a week and Squash NZ has offered two
weekly practice sessions at Unitec.
She was previously training under
former World Champion Carol Owens.
NZ Squash has also organised three-day
training camps and three to five fitness
programmes every month.
Juees first match is scheduled on July 26
and she will be competing against players
from Canada, USA and Egypt for the
world rankings.
Squash NZ has a blog that every player
has to update on daily basis about their
practices, matches and other information.
The blog will be a medium to update the
fans in NZ and the website will be updated
frequently too, added Juee.

will be competing for both, their individual
rankings and team games in Eindhoven this
month. The individual matches will be held

Prime Ministers Business

Scholarships awarded

welve senior executives

and business owners
have been given the
opportunity to attend the worlds
most prestigious business schools
after receiving Prime Ministers
Business Scholarships.
Economic
Development
Minister Steven Joyce says
the scholarships will allow
our smartest executives to
expand
their
international
expertise, and are designed to
grow business skills to help
make New Zealand firms more
internationally competitive.
The
scholarships
offer
recipients the chance to study at
the worlds best business schools.
They provide an opportunity to
learn international best practices
in management and leadership.

funding covers up to 50 percent of

course-related costs.
Our distance from overseas
markets and the size of our
economy can be a challenge
to firms wanting to enter
international
markets,
Mr Joyce says.
The scholarships will help to
develop valuable networks and
the global mindset of our business
leaders. Ultimately, this will help
to grow our economy and make
New Zealand businesses more
internationally competitive.

An extra month to get free

influenza vaccines

ealth Minister Jonathan

Colemansays the2015
seasonal
influenza
immunisation programme will be
extended from 31 July to the end
of August.
Ministry of Health surveillance
suggests that influenza has not
yet peaked this winter. To help
ensure people have the protection
they need we are extending the
funded vaccination season until 31
August, says Dr Coleman.
The A-H3N2 strain, which is
covered by the vaccine, appears
to be the predominant type
this strain affects the elderly and
very young more severely than
other strains.

The influenza vaccine is free

for people aged 65 years and over,
pregnant women, people with
long term health conditions such
as severe asthma, and children
under five years who have been

hospitalised for a respiratory

illness. People with Down
Syndrome and those with cochlear
implants are now eligible for
the vaccine.
Influenza vaccine is also
available for purchase from
general practices and many
pharmacies for those who are not
eligible for the free vaccine.
Although the vaccine was
delayed worldwide by a few weeks,
the health sector has quickly
caught up with previous years
distribution, says Dr Coleman.
To date, almost 1.19 million
flu vaccines have been distributed
across the country, protecting
over a quarter of our population.

WTO procurement agreement opens up the

world for Kiwi companies

conomic
Development
Minister Steven Joyce
and Trade Minister Tim
Groser has announced that New
Zealand has finalised its accession
to the World Trade Organisations
Agreement
on
Government
Procurement (GPA), and it will
come into effect next month.
New Zealand businesses will
have guaranteed access to bid
for an estimated US$1.7 trillion
in annual overseas government
contracts through joining the GPA,
which creates new opportunities
for Kiwi businesses to export more
products and services to more
destinations, Mr Joyce says.

Formal procedures in Geneva

have now been completed which
means that from mid-August,
New Zealand companies will be
able to do business freely across
43 WTO member countries,
including the US, Canada, Japan
and 28 countries of the EU.
The GPA covers the purchase
of a broad range of goods and
services that government agencies
buy from the private sector,
including
construction,
and
will help achieve the Business
Growth Agenda goal of increasing
exports to 40% of GDP by 2025,
Mr Joyce says. New Zealands
accession follows two years
of negotiations.

From next month, New Zealand

exporters seeking to access
the government procurement
markets of the other GPA
member countries will be able to
compete on equal terms with their
international counterparts, Mr
Groser says.

conomic
Development
Minister Steven Joyce has
announced this week that
the Government is extending its
underwrite of the New Zealand
Venture
Investment
Fund
(NZVIF) through to 2022.
NZVIF plays an important
role in developing the start-up and
growth capital markets for New
Zealand-originated
companies
with high-growth potential, says
Mr Joyce.
It has been instrumental in
building up New Zealands angel
and venture capital investor
markets from small beginnings to
the point where private and public
venture capital investment since
2003 has reached $1.1 billion. The
angel investment formal market
has provided a further $353
million since it started in 2006.
The $100 million underwrite
facility from the Crown will be
extended until 2018, and will
then continue at a reduced figure
of $60 million until 2022, as
returns to NZVIF from earlier
investments become available for
reinvestment.
This will give NZVIF the
flexibility and confidence to
continue to make co-funding
commitments into new venture
capital funds and partnerships,
Mr Joyce says.

To meet high demand for

NZVIFs Seed Co-investment
Fund, the Government is also
transferring $12 million within
NZVIF from the Venture Capital
Fund to the Seed Co-investment
Fund, which has helped to start
more than 115 companies.
NZVIF
has
made
and
continues to make an important
contribution
towards
the
diversification of the New Zealand
economy, and the development
of exciting new companies and
industries, Mr Joyce says.
The Government expects
NZVIF to become self-sustaining
over time, and the extension of
this guarantee will give the fund
the time to make that adjustment.
Since its establishment as a
government-owned and funded
company, NZVIF has invested
$147 million, alongside private
investors, into 187 of New
Zealands most promising growth
companies including Xero, Orion
Health, PowerbyProxi, Vend and
Booktrack.
Those companies have raised
total investment capital of more
than $1.4 billion. Four NZVIFbacked companies have market
capitalisations of more than $50
million and seven have listed on
stock exchanges.

Auckland kids missing out

on free GPs

housands of Auckland
children
are
missing
out on free doctors
visits despite claims from the
Government that take-up had
exceeded expectations, Labours
Health spokesperson Annette
King says.
Health Minister Jonathan
Coleman has been quick to talk up
the success of the Governments
scheme to subsidise doctors visits
to children under 13.
However 22 practices in
Auckland DHB have chosen not to
opt into the scheme.
That means up to 5000 six to

12 year olds will not be able to see

their GP for free.
If doctors feel they are unable
to provide this service, there is
clearly an issue with the amount
of funding available.
Dr Coleman has said if
practices didnt opt in there were
easily accessible alternatives.
That suggests he is comfortable
having
parents
driving
considerable distances with a sick
child to find a doctor.
This is another example of
this Government underfunding a
policy and expecting an already
stretched frontline to pick up the
pieces, Annette King says.

ilk prices hitting an all-time

low in the latest dairy auction
is more evidence of the
disastrous impact of the complacency of the
National Government ontheeconomy and
NewZealandjobs and incomes, Labours
Finance spokesperson Grant Robertson
says.
There has been another double-digit fall
in dairy prices overnight, whichare now at
their lowest level since Global Dairy Trade
auctions began. Prices have fallenmore
than 40 per cent since March and are 62 per
cent lower than last years peak.
Fonterras forecast of $5.25 per kg of
milk solids for the current season is based
on prices heading back towards US$3500
a tonne in the coming year. At $1848 per
tonne of whole milk powder, it is now closer
to half that price.
This ninth successive fall in dairy prices
is the latest in a series of bad news for
the New Zealand economy, so dependent
on dairy exports. Business confidence is
negative,wage and consumer confidence is
plummeting, unemploymentremains high
with fewer advertised jobs, wage growth
is stagnant and overall exports continue
to fall.
Theeconomicsignalshave been clear
for months now, yet thecomplacency of
the Government has put jobs, incomes and
the viability of productive New Zealand
businesses at risk.

Grant Robertson

Just a few weeks ago the Reserve Bank

Governor warned of the risk that dropping
dairy prices represents to our economy.
The expanding $13 billion economic black
hole from this price collapse willcause
significant economic damage to regions
that are heavily reliant ondairyand
the wider economy unless the government
acts swiftly.
Sitting on our hands and wishing it
all goes away cannot be the answer. New
Zealanders deserve better than that.
Labour believes a responsible government
would have made far greater efforts to build
and diversify industries, invest more in our
regions and in research and development.
National
squandered
economic
opportunities while it was riding the wave
of commodity prices, now that it is crashing
down, New Zealanders are paying the cost
of the wipe out, Grant Robertson says.

Minister welcomes Tourism

Industry Association partnership

new partnership between the

Department of Conservation and
New Zealands largest tourism
industry organisation will benefit both our
natural environment and the economy,
Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says.
The partnership will see DOC work
with the Tourism Industry Association to
promote tourism on conservation land and
beyond across the country.
Tourism is our second biggest industry,
worth around $24 billion, and our unique
and spectacular natural environment is a
major drawcard for international visitors,
which is yet another good reason to look
after it. Ms Barry says.

DOC is at the heart of tourism in this

country, safeguarding and providing
access to our natural and historic heritage.
It makes sense for DOC and TIA to
work towards shared goals through a
formal agreement.
Both parties will work closely together
on five goals: communication, building
relationships,
ensuring
compliance,
promoting each others interests and
growing conservation efforts around
the country.
The partnership has been developed
after last years successful DOC/TIA

Warmer, safer homes

Kanwaljit Bakshi
National List MP

ith
temperatures
plummeting recently,
many Kiwis will be
wondering what they can do to
stay warm. Its no secret many New
Zealand homes, particularly rental
properties, are not well insulated.
To bring more homes up to
standard, the Government is asking
landlords to provide under floor and

ceiling insulation in 180,000 rental

properties across the country.
This will mean less hospital
patients with circulatory and
respiratory illnesses, and less
money spent on medication. It will
also mean New Zealanders take
fewer sick days.
It is also worrying to note an
estimated 120,000 rental properties
currently do not have working
smoke alarms.
The Government is requiring
smoke alarms to be installed in all
tenanted properties from 1 July
next year. This is expected to save
three lives a year. Some people have

asked why we dont require more of

landlords. This is because landlords
will almost certainly pass the
cost of heavy-handed regulations
on to their tenants through
rent increases.
If a property requires a smoke
alarm, as well as ceiling and floor
insulation, we would expect the rent
to go up by $3.20 per week.
That cost is more than
outweighed by the benefits of a
home being warmer and safer, and
cheaper power and medical bills.
Other issues like leaky roofs,
excessive dampness and unsafe
wiring are already covered by

Black

existing regulations. They just need

to be enforced. As part of these
changes well be toughening up
on that.
The Government is taking the
first step by requiring underfloor
and ceiling insulation in heavily
subsidised social housing by 1 July
next year.
Other rental housing, including
boarding houses, will be required
to be insulated from 1 July, 2019.
Exceptions will be made for houses
in which it is physically impractical
to do so.
This is the logical next step
to follow Government initiatives

Orange

Warm Up New Zealand Healthy

Homes and Heat Smart, which have
insulated 280,000 homes.
Abandoned rental properties are
also part of these changes because
every abandoned house that stands
empty is a place another family
could move in to.
Instead of the current six weeks,
there will be a new 10-day process
to get new tenants in where the
current tenant has no intention
of returning.
These are practical and cost
effective ways to improve the lives
and health of New Zealanders.

he government has plans for

growth. Lots of them - 350 plans
and only 62 priorities! But more
isnt better. There needs to be a strategy
behind the plans.
The reality is that the plans are not
working. New Zealanders work harder
and earn less than most other people in
the developed world. While GDP figures
say the economy is growing, wages arent
rising, except for Chief Executives their
pay has increased dramatically. Inequality
has grown over the past 30 years. Most New
Zealanders are struggling to pay the bills
and worried about keeping their jobs.
Finance Minister Bill English sees
our low-wage economy as a competitive
advantage, saying that New Zealands 30
per cent lower wages than Australias should
attract more business. This approach has
benefitted few, but harmed most of us.
New Zealands productivity per worker has
stagnated and our wages have fallen behind
the rest of the developed world. Wages are
so low that the government has to provide
tax credits for working families.
The governments plans help foreign
investors buy our coastal property, houses,
farms and local companies, and provide
incentives for environmentally-destructive
mining, deep sea oil drilling, coal production
and intensive dairy farming. This pumps
up the short-term economic data, but the
figures are misleading. As the saying goes,
its all sizzle and no sausage. In reality we
are living off a speculative bubble, with high
housing prices and environmental damage,
selling off our assets and making a few
people richer.

The governments gamble on more and

more commodity production has gone sour.
Our farmers are hostages of the boom-bust
cycles of commodity prices.
The milk powder price has halved since
the estimate in the government budget just
a few months ago.
The result will be continued deficits
and more government debt, compounding
the growing mountain of foreign owned
private debt. 1973 was the last year when
New Zealand recorded a current account
surplus, meaning we have been spending
more than we have been earning as a nation
for the past 40 years.
We need a clear vision that brings us all
together to build a better economic future.
The Green Party has a clear vision for
our economy. Our future lies in working
smarter, not working harder for lower
wages, and creating incentives for a high
value, sustainable economy.
We need to invest more in the businesses
of the future, and in education and skills that
will enable workers to benefit from higher
value production and better incomes. We
need to build businesses exporting higher
value added products, not commodities. We
need to support clean technology and grow
jobs in the fast growing sectors of the world
economy, not prop up polluting industries.
We need better regulation to ensure
competition and fair prices, and a long term
plan to transition towards a low emissions
economy, instead of the failed Emissions
Trading Scheme.
The Green Party policies behind this
vision are on our website at www.greens.org.

Government move on
rental standards a
reasonable first step

ucklandCouncils Deputy Mayor

said that the Governments
announcement
of
minimum
standards for rental housing is a reasonable
first step in improving the lot of tenants.
These proposed changes are an
important step in lifting the standard of
rental properties, while ensuring tenants
have greater rights, says Aucklands
Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse.
The new standards rely on tenants
making a complaint about the state of
their rental accommodation, says Penny
Hulse. Given the shortage of rental housing
in Auckland, the Deputy Mayor sees a
continuing risk that tenants would be
unwilling to complain.
Building and Housing Minister Dr
Nick Smith said that the Residential
Tenancies Act will be strengthened to
include new requirements for insulation
and smoke alarms, while allowing
for greater powers to investigate and
prosecute
landlords
for
breaking
tenancy laws.
Thirty-nine per cent of Auckland

Census of Population and Dwellings figures.

All you need to know about your rates bill

rom this week, Aucklanders will be

able to see their individual rates
online for 2015/16. For some, the
changes may be confusing, and some may
see a larger increase than last year. It is a
complex picture and a number of factors
affect what people will pay.
First, the single rating system means
from this year everyone pays rates on the
same basis, no matter where they live. It
also means rates increases and decreases
are no longer capped.
For example, from this year a $750,000
property in Waitakere will pay the same
rates as a $750,000 property in Orakei.
Second, the average general rates increase
is 2.5 per cent. This breaks down to a 4.2
per cent average increase for residential;
business 1.4 per cent; and farm/lifestyle a
decrease of 9.7 per cent. This is needed to
respond to our regions strong growth. Note
how this compares to previous rises- pre
amalgamation the average rates rise was
5.4 per cent per year, and standardising the
rates across the board means that next year
residential increases will be 3.7 per cent
across the board.
Third- Revaluation. Auckland properties
underwent a three-yearly revaluation in
2014. Property values determine the share
of rates Aucklanders will pay from July 15.
All local authorities, including Auckland
Council, do this to help set the rates.
Property values dont determine the
amount of rates we collect, just how they

are shared out among ratepayers. If your

property has increased by more than
the average increase its likely your rates
will go up.
Fourth- the Interim Transport Levy:
Auckland needs urgent investment in
transport to respond to the demands of
growth, including new bus and cycle lanes
and roads.
Council is seeking support from central
government to reach an agreement on how
Auckland can raise its alternative transport
funding to help pay for this. In the interim
the council has opted for a three year
Interim Transport Levy to provide some of
the additional investment needed. This will
be a fixed charge as part of everyones rates
bill that will raise $186 million over three

years and be tagged to specific projects.

The levy works out to about $2 a week
for residential ratepayers and $3.50
for businesses. NZTA is helping out by
providing $215m and were using an
additional $122m from debt to see a total of
$523m invested over the next three years.
For people who may struggle to pay their
rates bills this year, Auckland council is
offering a range of options to help smooth
or even postpone payments. In some cases
people may be eligible for a rates rebate.
If you need assistance, councils call
centre staff can talk through your options,
including postponement or eligibility for the
Governments rebate scheme. The scheme
is administered by Auckland Council.

Indian High Commissioner to

their country.

issue of media censorship.
Its programme manager, Ken

journalists is positive, but the
status quo isn't going to change.
"Once that news hits that
organisation to the publisher, to the
editor, they will then have to tweak it
so that it will suit government, that
way they don't get into trouble. So
that's why we're saying that it hasn't
really changed much. Once it hits the
tables of the editors and the media
organisation, it still comes down to
the same thing, self-censorship.

Minister hails role of Fiji Hindi

ducation Minister Mahendra
Reddy says the Fiji Hindi
dialect has remained and
evolved and needs to be preserved.
He says Fiji sits within a global
region identified for language loss
because of the effects of colonialism.
Mr Reddy made the comment
on Wednesday night during the
opening for Kaise Baat IV at USP.
The programme Kaise Baat
was initiated in 2012 by Mohit
Prasad with a view to encouraging
academic and community nexus on
promoting, reviving, and discussing
Fiji Hindi as a plantation language
unique to the Fiji Islands.
Mr Reddy said Fiji Hindi was
a unique language, which grew
from the indenture experiences
and became the common language
from diverse groups of dialects and
languages from India.

Fred Wesley says publishers

and editors still face the possibility
of huge fines, but the amendment
is a positive step forward.
He says it will impact on the
kind of stories journalists can do
more freely.
"There are obviously a few
challenges there, but it's a positive
move by the government, this is
the first positive step forward and
hopefully it's going to reflect in
young journalists being allowed to
do their work without fear."

Indian languages such as Tamil,

these languages as well as from
Fijian and English, he said.
Mr Reddy said it remained and

by qualifying for their
maiden Mens Olympic Football
Tournament after a nail-biting
final against Vanuatu this evening.
The final was played under
lights at Sir Hubert Murray
Stadium in Port Moresby and
went all the way to penalties after
120 goalless minutes with Jale
Dreloa, captain of Fiji during the
recent FIFA U-20 World Cup
campaign, converting the crucial
final spot kick.

Fiji coach Carlos Buzzetti was

ecstatic to have overseen another
historic performance from Fiji.
What an incredible game, a
truly final game. They deserved

as we deserved to win it,

Buzzetti says.
It was an amazing 90 minutes
of football, followed by 30
minutes of extra time and then
down to penalties and it was miss,
score, miss. But for me this is
something special.
Its the second historic
moment for Fiji and historic
because Fiji has never qualified for
the Olympics before, but also no
Pacific Island nation has qualified
before. This was an amazing
opportunity for both sides.

It was all systems go from the

outset with both sides putting
early pressure on their opponent
in an effort to get ahead. The
play flew from end to end, with
Vanuatu looking much more likely
to score.
While Vanuatu looked like
they were getting the majority of
chances, it was still a match that
either side could have taken at any
point with Fiji just as unfortunate
in front of goal as their opponent.
Adding to the difficulties up
front was Fiji keeper Tevita Koroi

and Vanuatu glove man Selonie

Iaruel having the performances of
their lives with some impressive
saves at either end of the field.
With the sides inseparable after
normal time, and extra time, it
came down to a penalty shoot-out
to help identify a winner. Vanuatu
captain Brian Kaltack was first
up and wasted no time firing in
the first penalty for his side. As it
stood, only Brian and his cousins
Jean and Tony were able to
convert from the spot while it was
a similar story from the Fiji side.

Action needed
to tackle sexual

he Fiji Womens Crisis Centre

says there needs to be more than
just the condemnation of sexual
violence, the words must also carry into
action. The comments follow reports last
week of the rape and brutal assault of a
nine-year-old girl in Nakasi.
The co-ordinator of the Fiji Womens
Crisis Centre, Shamima Ali, says whenever
there is a nasty incident there is shock and
horror and statements are made, but then
the issue dies down again.
She says all stakeholders, including
the government and faith based
organisations, need to come together
so they can share information, and look
at international best practice on how to
tackle sexual violence.
Everyone has to do their job, law
enforcement has to be trained, if you have
good laws, are they being implemented?
What is the attitude within the courts with
gender based violence, particularly sexual
crimes against women and children. So I
think those things need to be done, and
very honestly and openly. Shamima
Ali says gender equality must also be
promoted in all walks of life.

In this day and age when we have

Ratu Epeli added that every year globally

I have and will continue to promote a
more practical solution to STIs and HIV
and that is to advise all but particularly those
in the 14 to 29 and the 30 to 39 age youth
groups the most sexually active, the bulk
of the education and working population
and the most vulnerable, on the need to use
protection such as condoms. The motto is to

When everything seems to be going

Henry Ford
Anything but funny

am currently reading Jane Kelseys recently released book The FIRE economy.
A brilliant book that states that - built on finance, insurance and real estate is
now the worlds principal source of wealth creation. Its rise has transformed
our political, economic and social landscapes, supported by a neoliberal regime that
celebrates markets, profit and risk. From rising inequality and ballooning household
debt to a global financial crisis and fiscal austerity, the neoliberal orthodoxy has
brought instability and empowered the few. Yet it remains remarkably resilient, even
resurgent, in New Zealand and abroad.
In 1995 Jane Kelsey (currently professor at Auckland University) set out a
groundbreaking account of the neoliberal revolution in The New Zealand Experiment.
Now she marshals an exceptional range of evidence to show how this transfer of
wealth and power has been systematically embedded over three decades. I highly
recommend this book for those who are economically keen. The release of his book is
quite timely with the current economic environment exasperated by Labours creative
approach to blame Asian investors for the soaring house prices in New Zealand.
Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy says blaming ethnic groups for
complex economic problems is neither new nor unique to New Zealand.
Dumbing down complex economic woes and blaming them on an ethnic
community whose members are already feeling under pressure is neither new nor
unique but its always disappointing, said Dame Susan.
Economists have voiced real concerns with the legitimacy of the half baked data
thats been released this weekend, if we are going to address Aucklands inflationary
housing market then expert data, evidence and analysis is crucial.
Chinese New Zealanders deserve better than this and so does anyone keen on
actually solving this issue.
Social media sites and news agencies in China are running hot with feedback
in reaction to suggestions that overseas-based Chinese investors have an undue
influence on the Auckland property market.
Associate Professor Dr Henry Chung from Masseys School of Communication,
Journalism and Marketing, who has been studying the Chinese market for more
than 20 years, says reaction in China has been huge. He says responses on its
equivalent search engine to Google have multiplied since the release of figures by
the Labour Party claiming foreign speculators were fuelling Aucklands over heated
housing market. The Chinese Herald described the figures as a deep water bomb to
New Zealand society and especially the Chinese community, while the news agency
Xinhua could not agree with the Labour Partys findings because it is not possible to
confirm the real originality of these buyers.
Mr Chung, who is originally from Taiwan and is based at Masseys Auckland
campus, says it must be remembered that many other people born in Asia, including
Koreans and Malaysians, shared surnames such as his own with Chinese people.
While this may not directly affect the Indian community, it is a fact that the
majority of Indians diligently save to invest in the property market. Perhaps if data
was drawn up, Indians would also feature amongst the top investors in the property
market. While this is an interesting environment, it will be worthwhile to watch
this space.
On a brighter note, the holy month of Ramadan comes to a close and our Muslim
brothers and sisters heartily celebrate Eid, around the world. On behalf of the entire
Indian Weekender family, I would like to wish our readers Eid Mubarak. May this Eid
bring the best of health, wealth and happiness to all our readers and their families.
Until next time.

he cricket bat has made

the country proud, and
the same community of
people in New Zealand equally
proud. Yes, I am talking about
Indians and their relationship
with the magical swing of the
cricket bat.
Last year, the wielding of the
same bat, albeit with no magical
intention, had brought shame to
the Kiwi-Indian community. It
put the perpetrator behind the
bars for three and a half years and
has left a family with two young
children heart-broken. All this
only because of a temporary lapse
in judgement.
Last July, Daljit Singh beat
up his wife with a cricket bat and
almost killed her, in a fit of anger,
when he suspected she was having
an affair with their flatmate. In all
probability, the wife was involved
in an extra-marital relationship.
And, of course, it is not the right
thing to do. It amounts to being
unfaithful
and
irresponsible
towards her legal partner. But
does it give Daljit the right to
harm her physically? In this case,
the injury was almost fatal.
After being remanded in
custody for a year, Daljit did
plead guilty before the court and

admitted that he should have

managed his anger better. He also
referred to his Indian mentality
as the cause for his grave decision.
By it, he perhaps meant his sense
of entitlement over his spouse.
When a group of people, say a
family, stays together for a while,
there is an automatic sense of
entitlement over each other. It
often keeps the family together,
and in a patriarchal setup, the
oldest male member takes on
the decision-making role. The
sense of entitlement also allows
spouses within a familial setup
develop certain expectations from
each other.
All these happen by default.
That doesnt make it legitimate.
The same sense of entitlement can

also make the family members feel

claustrophobic, especially when
boundaries are outlined in the
relationship. Every entitlement
comes with expectations. When
the expectations are not met, the
so-called victims are enraged and
driven to use their power over the
other in such a way that would
harm the perpetrator. So that
the latter realise their mistake and
retreat to the boundaries laid out
initially in the relationship.
But we are also allowed the right
to choose who we want to be with.
Most times, people look outside
of their committed relationship
because they are unhappy with
what they have. They have the
right to explore and step out too,
of course after conveying their

the wife has realised that it was a
mistake to get involved in an extramarital relationship. Or it could
be that the morals a conservative
patriarchal family are tugging at
her conscience and forcing her to
belittle her own suffering at the

In either case, should she try

Paired with former World No 1,

Elena Vesnina in the final to
win the womens doubles title at
Wimbledon. It was a big day for
the womens game in India.
Mirza become the first Indian
woman to win the title, and her
journey to reach this pedestal has
not been easy. Since the media
first spotted her in 2009 when she
became the countrys first woman
to win a Grand Slam, she has
been subject to criticisms from
religious groups and politicians.
But amid all controversies, each
time she pulled off a major win,
it validated her ability to triumph
over criticisms.
In the early years of her career,
Muslim scholars criticised her
for wearing a short skirt while
playing the game. A fatwa was
issued by a group of Muslim
clerics demanding that her attire
was un-Islamic. In 2005, her

decision to their spouses.

The spouse may not be
equally willing to let go
of the relationship, and
quite agreeably it is not easy to
end a relationship, especially if it
is legitimised.
But as a mature and rational
adult, we should also learn to
accept our spouses decision. The
liberated way of life teaches us to
live and let live, even if sometimes
we have to make difficult decisions.
The outcome of this will always be
much more positive rather than
resorting to domestic violence.
Daljits action amounts to an act
of violence, with an intent to kill
the victim. Agreed that the wife, if
she was involved in a relationship
with the flatmate, was being
unfaithful and it is unacceptable.
Even then, it is not a crime grave
enough to be killed for. If Daljit
did not lose his mind to anger,
he could have taken a much more
calculated course of action that
would have been within the folds
of law and perhaps much more
damaging for the wife. But love
does make us blind. Team that

market is all of a sudden
under
the

eyes of the entire country as the
Labour party has spectacularly
brought out its new finding to
fore about Chinese investment in
the countrys financial capital. It
is now any ones guess as to how
authentic or credible the source
of these numbers are especially
when one is told that the research
or survey is based on assorting
the names based on the last
names phonetics.
The mere number, 39.5%, that
the Labour party has arrived at,
doesnt tell the real story. Labour
party which itself has kept away
9% Chinese-New Zealanders out
of its debate, needs to probably
look at some of the other numbers
as well. Just subtracting some
number they have arrived at with
the percentage of a communitys
population in a city and assuming
that the remaining numbers are
non-residents of New Zealand
is preposterous.
Even
if
Labour
partys
calculations are partially true, it is
not hard to imagine that it is just a
natural phenomenon that is taking
place as Chinese and Indians do
not just look at real estate as a
place to stay, but as an investment.
Total number of Indian migrants

given long term permanent work

permits was standing at 12,100
last year with China standing next
with 7,700 migrants. With over
26% of Aucklands population
earning more than $50,000
annually, it will be safe to assume
that these migrants are at the
natural progression in their life
which demands them to settle
down in a new country with a new
place to stay. One testimony to
the fact that Indians tend to save
or re-invest their profits is that,
Indian women have 11% of the
gold of the world in their closets.
This amounts to 18,000 tonnes of
gold in the form of jewellery which
is more than the gold reserves of
the US federal reserves, which
stands at 8,133 tonnes.
For a natural upward growth of
any economy, active re- investment
in any form is a necessity and is
a fundamental right in an open
economy operating on free market
principles. Contrary to Labour
partys views, if investment from
Asia is indeed taking place in
Auckland, it would actually help
the GDP growth rate of the entire
country. Foreign investment in
real estate in open economies has
been taking place across the globe
and even USA is not left out either.
In such a scenario, it should be
seen as a step backward if we
are observing foreign investment
as a deterrent.

Modi launches Skill India mission, says it

will be youths war against poverty

rime Minister Narendra Modi on

Wednesday this week, launched the
Skill India Mission, terming it a war
against poverty by training youth to earn
their livelihood with honour and how the
young population could do wonders with
proper abilities.
Industry welcomed the endeavour as
need of the hour, while the Congress
however termed it yet another relaunch of
a UPA government programme.
Launching the programme on the first
World Youth Skills Day in presence of
union ministers, chief ministers and leaders
of industry, Modi said a large number of
Indias population is young and could do
wonders if trained well for various works
and trades available in the world.
A major part of our population is below
the age of 35 years. They are young and
need to be trained, he said, adding that
India would have to build on its strengths.
The prime minister said that the central
government has launched a war against
poverty by embarking on the mission to
train Indian youth to earn his livelihood
with honour.
We have begun a war against poverty.
Every poor is my soldier in this war and we
have to win this war with their support,
Modi said.
We have a large number of young
people in the world, we just have to train

and prepare them and I can assure you that

India would provide largest workforce to
the world in the decades to come, he said.
The last century was of IITs (Indian
Institutes of Technology) in the country, but
his government would want this century to
be of ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes),
he said.
India Inc expressed support for Modis
vision to train the youth skillfully.
Terming the Skill India Mission a
renewed effort to capitalize on Indias
demographic dividend and create a large
pool of skilled workforce, which is crucial
to support growth across sectors and
the economy at large, Microsoft India
chairman Bhaskar Pramanik said that a
skills mission of this scale will make the
training efforts more systematic and will

ensure a workforce which is professionally

skilled and meets industry needs.
The
Indian

and
Semiconductor Association welcomed
the mission to harness the countrys
demographic
dividend
through

and

development effort, which in turn should
make India a country of choice to address
global skill shortage.
This initiative in tandem with the Make
in India initiative should result in good
diversity in skills and high employment
outcome via a public-private partnership,
said its chairman Vinay Shenoy.
The Congress, however, said that
Modi government was doing nothing new
and just launching re-named UPA
government programmes.

launched by the UPA and have been working

prime minister. Is this the achievement
and the originality of thinking that Prime
Minister Narendra Modi claims? Congress

under which 35 lakh people have already
been trained.

BRICS by BRICS
T
Kumar Suresh

he Greeces debt crisis

for a brief period of time,
has once again put the
lime light on the worlds new
alternate to the IMF and World
Bank, the New Developmental
Bank (NDB) setup by the BRICS
(Brazil, Russia, India, China and
South Africa).
With Russia openly offering to
help Greece with its crisis through
the new institution, world now has
a new alternate for funds.
Its
a
different
matter
altogether whether or not Greece
accepts the offer, but what is
important is the fact that set of
countries, which have been on
the receiving ends of sanctions in
the past, have come together and
are on the verge of opening doors
to the developing countries that
are desperate for impartial
financial support.
The idea of NDB was given
a shape last year by the BRICS
countries with the headquarters
of the institution in China with
an Indian president.
Though all was right until
recent past, last few months

19

have seen an upheaval of sorts

in the way these countries look
at each other diplomatically
and politically. South Africa
and Brazil have been the mute
spectators with relationships
between Russia, China and India
taking new routes.
It was clear from the beginning
as to why Russia, burdened by
the series of sanctions from
the western countries after its
involvement in Ukraines crisis,
was rooting for NDB.
With many of its state owned
and private companies kept
away from western markets and
with the fall of crude oil prices,
Russias economy is staring
at a deep and a dark unending
spiral hole.

Russia sincerely hopes that

this new monetary body can
help revive fortunes of many
Russian companies.
One of many such sectors in
Russia which needs all the help
it can get is the manufacturing
sector which sells defence
equipment to other countries.
With India being the chief
business ally and importer all
these years in south Asia, it has
all the right to feel done in by
the deal Russia has signed with
Pakistan which will give access to
Indias historical foe, the Russian
fleet of JF-17 fighter planes and
MI-35 choppers matching the
capabilities of Indian air force.
With recent Indian inclination
towards USA for its defence

procurement, it is
not hard to believe
the
Russians
response but this,
coming at a time
during
BRICS
meet, was indeed a
low point between
the two countries
at the summit.
Diplomatically
in recent times,
Pakistan and India have shared a
remote similarity. India is an ally
of Russia and has had close ties
with USA and on the other hand,
Pakistan is the only ally of China
which sees eye to eye with USA.
The entire balance has gone
through many changes and with
Chinas direct developmental
investment in POK (Pakistan
occupied Kashmir), India is
definitely cornered.
Chinas urge to drub India at
almost any given opportunity
at the world stage has also not
helped ties between the two
countries. With China opposing
Indias move in UN for action
against
Zaki-Ur-Rehman
Laqvi, who India feels is the
mastermind behind Mumbai

attack, there must have surely

been
un-easiness
during
BRICS meet.
Last year too, when Modi was
hosting Chinas premier at his
den, Gujarat, Chinas military
trespassed Indian territorial
borders on regular counts.
This made sure that at a time
when Modi was leading the
campaign Made in India, China
tactically mocked India on its
face, telling the world what to
expect from a country which cant
even manage its geographies.
Though singled in South Asia,
India has strong backing from
other countries. Its economy has
shown signs of improvement with
pro-business regime taking over
last year.
By the end of this decade,
India is expected to contribute
10% of the worlds growth but for
now, it has had its task cut out.
Russia and China for now, seem
to have gained the most from the
BRICS meet this year.
It will be interesting to see
what these developing economies
have to offer next year at
BRICS summit.

Rahul meets Delhi street

vendors

ongress vice president

Rahul Gandhi on Monday
met street vendors in
Raghubir Nagar in west Delhi and
listened to their grievances.
He also asked party workers
to fight for the rights of the street
vendors, including for getting them
licences to ply their trades.
The vendors called me to
complain about lack of proper
facilities. The poor workers have
not been given proper space in the
city, Gandhi said after meeting the
hawkers. Gandhi, accompanied by
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee
chief Ajay Maken and Congress incharge of party affairs in Delhi P.C.
Chacko, went around the makeshift
cramped sheds from where the
vendors do their business.
I have heard their grievances
and will take it up with the
authorities, said Gandhi.
Maken said Rahul Gandhi
was instrumental in the passage
of Street Vendors (Protection of
Livelihood and Regulation of Street
Vending) Bill, 2014, which aims to
regulate street vending and protect
the rights of urban street vendors.
The act also protects the street
vendors from harassment by
police and civic authorities, besides

providing them with protection of

livelihood rights and social security.
The leaders of Gujarati Vaghri
community, whose members are
mainly into street vending in the
area, said some 4,000 vendors ply
their business from the cramped
spaces in Raghubir Nagar. They
sought more space and better
amenities. Addressing a press
conference later, Maken accused
the Aam Admi Party government in
Delhi of not properly implementing
the law aimed at protection of
street vendors.
The AAP made a promise
to bring a law for street vendors
but has not done it. It is not even
implementing the existing law.

The people whom we met today

(Monday) told us that they have
to pay bribes (to carry out their
businesses), Maken said.
He said the Street Vendors
Act provides for giving vending
licences to two-and-a-half per cent
population of a city.
In Delhi, five lakh people can
get this licence, but not a single
person has got it so far. Our effort
will be to get these people the
licences, he said.
If this many people get licences,
it will directly benefit 14 per cent of
the population, Maken said.
He said Gandhi has asked party
workers to take up issue of street
vendors in a big way.

No Swacch Bharat without childrens

rights: Kailash Satyarthi

obel laureate and child rights activist Kailash

Satyarthi said the Indian laws still do not
define child labour in a definitive way and
that Swachh Bharat cannot be attained if childrens
rights are not protected.
How can the country be Swachh Bharat (Clean
India) if childhood is not protected and children do
not have access to quality education, Satyarthi asked
while lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (Save girl child, educate girl
child) campaign.
Even if our countrys Gross Domestic Product is
as high as 15 per cent, it is still a challenge for India
if children remain enslaved, Satyarthi added while
addressing a session on Child rights and issues at the
PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Right to Education (RTE) Act has increased
enrollment in schools, but drop-out rate has been
equally high. This points to the need for quality
education in our schools. The RTE is a fundamental
right which opens the door to all other rights, the
Nobel Peace Prize winner laureate said.
According to a World Bank study, each dollar
invested in education will give 15-fold returns in 20
years, he said, and sought from the government,
industries and civil societies liberal investments in
childrens education. Satyarthi is the founder of
Bachpan Bachao Aandolan, an organisation aimed at

protecting child rights. The Child Labour (Prohibition

and Regulation) Act has a list of 18 hazardous
occupations and 65 processes which, he said, should
be retained in amendments.
India has the largest child population in the
world and the government pegs the number of
child labourers around 45 lakh, while nongovernmental agencies fix this figure at
more than five crore, the child rights
activist remarked.
On the proposed legislation
on juvenile justice, Satyarthi
said the amendment to the
Juvenile Justice Act is very
important in dealing with
cases where juveniles
have
committed
heinous crimes such
as rape or murder.
The bill seeks to
lower from 18 to 16
years the culpable
age of a juvenile
to be tried as
an adult for
heinous crimes.

30 launches planned in next three

fiscals: ISRO chief

NEWS in BRIEF

he Indian space agency has a roadmap

of 10 launches per year for the next three
financial years or a total of 30 launches in
the period, its chief AS Kiran Kumar said.
The Indian Space Research Organisation chief,
who met with his team and discussed the test of the
demo reusable launch vehicle, told media persons
that this it would take place in the latter half
of October.
This would approximately cost Rs.3 crore. The
whole purpose of testing the demo vehicle is the first
step towards designing the actual one. The demo
vehicle will travel around 90 kms, he said. Kiran

Kumar said their target

is to achieve 10 launches
a year.
By the end of this fiscal,
we expect to finish seven
launches and then to have
10 launches every year in the
next three fiscals, he said. On
the SAARC satellite, the ISRO chief
said that there was a meeting with five
member countries including Pakistan in
this connection last month.

ourist arrivals in the country under the e-visa facility have

witnessed more than 10-fold increase between January and
June 2015 compared with the same period last year, the
tourism ministry has said. The maximum arrivals were from the
United States under the scheme.
During January-June 2015, a total of 1,26,214 tourists arrived by
availing of e-visa facility compared with just 11,953 during the same
period in 2014, the ministry said. In June 2015 itself, a total of 15,557
tourists arrived in the country using the e-visa facility compared with
2,112 during the same month in 2014.
This growth may be attributed to introduction of e-tourist visa
for 76 countries as against 12 countries earlier, the statement said.
Among the top ten countries whose citizens availed of the facility
were: United States (41.71%), Australia (9.67%), Germany (7.21%,
Canada (4.86%), Korea (4.29%), France (3.38%), Singapore (2.73%),
United Arab Emirates (2.7%), Russia (2.53%) and Mexico (2.47%).
India launched the e-Visa scheme in November 2014 for 43 countries.
It was extended to Guyana and Sri Lanka in January 2015 and April
2015 respectively, followed by addition of 31 other countries in
June 2015.

employees to adopt kids

eading e-retailer Flipkart has unveiled a novel policy this

week to allow its employees to adopt children.
Our employees will be granted paid leave and Rs.50,000
allowance to meet legal, agency and regulatory costs for adoption.
We have about 30,000 employees across the country, a Flipkart
spokesman said. Adoptive mothers will get six months paid leave and
four months of flexible working hours, while adoptive fathers will be
eligible for six weeks of paid leave.
Noting that more working couples were adopting children, the
e-commerce player said its adoption assistance programme would
add value and encourage work-life balance among professionals.
The company, however, did not give break-up of its employees,
including working couples and how many of them will opt
for adoption.

Affluent Chicago suburb to host Indias

Independence Day parade

he Chicago suburb of Naperville is to

officially host the India Independence
Day parade this year, making it the
first city in Midwest America to do so.
The parade is organised in many
American cities by private organisations such
as the Federation of Indian Associations. The
parade will be held on August 16, a Sunday.
Napervilles Indian Community Outreach
Organization(ICO) and the Alliances of
Midwest Indian Association have jointly
organised the parade and related celebrations,
which includes hoisting the Indian flag at the
Naperville Municipal Center.
The organisers said that they anticipated
a large turnout, rivalling the Independence
Day parade in Chicagos little India Devon
Avenue, traditionally the biggest such event in

the area. The India Day Parade will showcase

Indias rich and diverse culture, with several
floats organised by Indian cultural, business
and political organisations. Spectators will

be treated to a rich variety of Indian cuisine,

ethnic arts, apparel and jewellery. At an event
to announce the parade, senior city officials
were unabashedly enthusiastic.
Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and
Mayor Emeritus George Pradel lauded
the contributions of the suburbs Indian
American community. There was even a
proposal for Pradel to be the parade marshal
attired in a traditional Indian attire.
Indian Americans are now a significant
part of Napervilles population in both
numbers and impact, said ICO chairman
Krishna Bansal. The community, which
saw a dramatic grown since the 90s, now
comprises 10 per cent of the suburbs total
population. Moreover, with the recent influx
of information technology workers and

other professionals from India, more than

70 per cent are first generation immigrants.
Local observers see the parade as a symbol
of the rapid growth of the Indian American
community in the Chicago suburbs.
Indian-Americans are the largest Asian
ethnic group in Illinois, according to data
from the last census. Demographers and
Indian community leaders say they expect
that the figures will increase even more as
highly educated Indians continue to fill jobs
in the computer industry and change the face
of the suburbs. Naperville, ranked as one of
the most desirable American cities to raise a
family, is home to more than 10,000 IndianAmericans, making it the suburb with the
largest population of the community in the
area outside Chicago.

one day land them in the history books and
Americans on the surface of Mars, said
NASA administrator Charles Bolden.
Williams, a US Navy captain, received
her commission in the Navy in May 1987
and became a helicopter pilot, logging
more than 3,000 flight hours in more than
30 different aircraft.
NASA chose Williams for the astronaut
programme in 1998. She spent a total of
322 days in space and currently holds the
record for total cumulative spacewalk time
by a female astronaut (50 hours and 40
minutes). She now ranks sixth on the alltime US endurance list and second all-time
for a female astronaut.
Their selection allows NASA to move

Indian flag sores high at Wimbledon

Sania Mirza, Leander Paes and Sumit Nagal claim titles at Wimbledon grand slam
Sania-Martina clinch
Wimbledon crown

ndian tennis ace Sania Mirza

defied all odds to win her
maiden womens doubles
title at a Grand Slam event by
clinching the Wimbledon crown
with Swiss veteran Martina
Hingis in Wimbledon, London.
The top-seeded duo made a
remarkable comeback to beat
Russian second seeds Ekaterina
Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7,
7-6(4), 7-5 in two hours and 25
minutes in the final last weekend.
This was Sanias first womens
doubles title at Grand Slams
though the World No.1 has
three mixed doubles trophies at
Major events.
The only time before this she
reached a Grand Slam final in
womens doubles was at the 2011
French Open.
After clinching her maiden
Wimbledon womens doubles
title, Sania Mirza said she and
her partner Martina Hingis gave
it their all on the court even when
they were down in the topsyturvy encounter.
This was also the Hyderabadis
maiden final at the All England

Club across all senior formats

though she had won the girls
doubles title here 12 years ago
with Russias Alisa Kleybanova.
For a match like this, the No.1
and No.2 seeds playing, it was
the best match you could have
asked for the tournament. It was
unbelievably exciting to play.
I really hope it was exciting to
watch, too, Sania said.
Even when we were down, we
knew we were giving everything
we had on the court.
These are the moments we
worked years and years and all
our lives for.
This is what we play for. We
feel really honoured to have won
that match really.

Hingis joined hands one more time

to completely thrash AustrianHungarian fifth seeds Alexander
Peya and Timea Babos 6-1, 6-1 in the
final at Centre Court on Sunday.

Earlier, Sumit Nagal made sure

the Indian flag soared high much
before Paes match. Nagal etched
his name in the history books by
winning the Wimbledon boys
doubles title with Vietnamese
partner Nam Hoang Ly.
The 17-year-old Nagal and
Ly, seeded eighth, defeated
American-Japanese fourth seeds
Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan
7-6(4), 6-4 in the final in an hour
and three minutes on No.1 Court.
Both pairs broke each other
once to push the first set in to the
tie-breaker where Nagal and Ly
proved a tad bit better to win the
set and take the lead in the match.
The eighth seeds were offered
only one breakpoint opportunity
in the second set which they
grabbed with open hands to get
the break of serve and win the set
and the match.
The New Delhi-born, righthanded player had also entered
the boys singles competition.
However, he was ousted from the
category in his opener when he
lost to Argentinean Juan Pablo

India trounce Zimbabwe NZ ride on

to clinch ODI series 2-0 Devine fireworks

he Indian cricket team

displayed an all-round
performance to register a
commendable 62-run victory over
Zimbabwe in the second One-Day
International (ODI), with a match
yet to play, and thus clinch the
series 2-0 at the Harare Sports
Club in Harare, last week.
For India, openers Murali Vijay
(72) and skipper Ajinkya Rahane
(63) starred with the bat to help
the visitors reach 271/8 in 50
overs. In reply, some tight bowling
by the Indians and the hosts
wickets falling at regular intervals
choked Zimbabwe as they were
bundled out for 209 in 49 overs.
For India, Bhuvneshwar Kumar
(4/33) was the pick of the bowlers.
Put in to bat, India got off to
a slow start with captain Rahane
and Vijay taking their time to
settle down.
The two went on to score 39
in the first 10 overs. But India
managed to keep their wickets
and posted 78/0 in 20 overs.
Zimbabwe
bowlers
Neville
Madziva, Brian Vitori, Donald
Tiripano were all disciplined
and economical.

For Zimbabwe, Madziva (4/49)

was the pick of the bowlers.
Chasing 271, the hosts were
reduced to 43/3 by the 11th over
as opener Vusi Sibanda (2),
Hamilton Masakadza (5) and
Elton Chigumbara (9) fell in
quick succession.
Sean Williams (20) also
went back to the pavilion after
a brief stint with opener Chamu
Chibhabha as Zimbabwe were
reduced to 95/4 by the 25th over.
Chibhabha seemed in touch.
The fall of wickets at the other

end did not bother him as he

scored freely and took on the
Indian bowlers.
The right-handed batsman
struck nine fluent boundaries en
route his 70, but was unlucky as
he ran himself out in the 32nd
over when his team needed him to
stay with the score on 130/5.
Soon after, Sikandar Raza (18),
Richmond Mutumbami (32) and
Graeme Cremer (27) got off to
starts but fell in clusters to make
it difficult for the hosts to save
the match.

half-century by opener
Sophie Devine (70, 22b,
5x4, 8x6) propelled
visiting New Zealand to an eightwicket victory against India in
the first of the three womens
Twenty20
Internationals
in
Bengaluru, India last week.
Indias modest total of 125 all
out in 19.5 overs proved an easy
target for the White Ferns who
rode on Devines big-hitting and
89-run partnership for the second
wicket with Amy Satterthwaite
(39 not out, 35b, 3x4, 2x6) as the
visitors made 126/2 in just 12.3
overs to take a 1-0 lead.
The Indian innings was rather
disappointing, especially after
the hosts had won the ODI series
3-2 only a few days ago, courtesy
some solid batting.
Earlier, however, only skipper
Mithali Raj (35, 23b, 6x4), who
opened the innings, stood up to
the Kiwi onslaught as seamer
Morna Nielsen and left-arm
spinner Kate Broadmore took
three wickets apiece while offspinner Leigh Kasperek came
away with two.

Law and disorder

Esha Chanda

ast week, a man in

Northwest Delhis Rani
Bagh area was arrested
and sent to judicial custody for
allegedly raping his friends maid.
When dailies in India regularly
carry reports of sexual abuse, it is
more disturbing when the abuser
behind bars is identified as a man
from the police force.
Assistant sub-inspector Javeer
Singh was accused of raping
his friends maid at gunpoint.
The 23-year-old domestic help
approached the police on Friday,
July 10. Medical tests confirmed
the rape, following which Singh
was arrested and sent to 14 days of
judicial custody.
Earlier in April, two assistant
police inspectors and a police
constable in Mumbai were
arrested for rape after a 29-yearold model filed a complaint
saying that she was kidnapped
and sexually molested at a
police station.

Police brutality in India is not

a new phenomenon, and the same
holds true for other countries. A
range of human rights violations
has been committed by the police
force that includes arbitrary arrest
and detention and extrajudicial
killings.
There
have
been
scathing reports on abuse, racial
discrimination and the use of
excessive force by the US police
departments for more than two
decades. The Counted, a project
run by The Guardian, reports that
601 people have been killed so
far this year by the protectors of
the country.
In most cases it has been found
that the jury finds them not guilty
of the charges. Last year, a jury
acquitted former police officers
Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli
of the death of Kelly Thomas, a
homeless and mentally ill man.
Although the surveillance camera
caught the two officers beating
Thomas and stunning him with a
taser, the law protected the officers,
as the jury and court often hesitate
to question an officers decision

during a confrontation with a

potentially dangerous person.
The video sparked a nationwide
outcry, but the law provided a
shield to the wrongdoers.
The perpetrators of crime
in such cases are the ones who
are meant to protect the society
against crime. Law keepers
are turning into law breakers.
Although this is not true for every
man in the uniform, we cannot

ignore the growing number cases

where police officers have abused
their power. The scale of the
problem is largely hidden with no
official statistics maintained. The
rise of police brutality can have
destructive effects on a society.
Whether the abuse is physical or
psychological, the repercussions
are severe. The consequences
go beyond the direct victim. The
emotional toll endured by the

society lingers long after the

campaigns end and the news
crew return to other stories. It
establishes a culture of fear and
mistrust between the police force
and the society, especially when
minorities are unfairly targeted
every time. Law enforcement
comes with many liberties, but
these liberties have created
a scope of misconduct that
goes undetected.
Police officials are obliged to
protect and serve individuals, but,
unfortunately, some have abused
the power that comes along with
their authoritative position. Police
brutality is a global problem. The
media has been heavily publicising
recent cases, thus shedding light
on a segment that shakes the
foundation of the society. Acting
as shields, guarding the walls of
the society, when these armours
turn back and strike, the law and
order comes crumbling down. But
the question still looms over dark
clouds: is this just a case of few
police officers or a broken culture?

Smile and say yes!

Kumar Suresh

hey say figuring out what

you want of your life is
half the job done. With the
difficult part taken care of, it then
comes down to how passionate
you are to achieve that milestone.
In this process at times, the
journey is more cherishable than
the actual goal itself. In this
feature, we try to bring to you the
story of people who persevered,
took the brunt of life on the chin
and still emerged victorious.
Its no childs play to move out
of your comfort zone to raise a
notch up in life against all odds.
Reema Patel is one such person
we came across who, though from
a typical Gujarati background
came to a new world called New
Zealand and made it her home.
Reema Patel
I was a simple Indian girl born
and brought up in a Gujarati
village. I come from a traditional
and a very conservative society

25

where women are seen as a

burden to the parents. I did all my
schooling in Gujarati medium and
when I finished my education, I
strongly felt that all the barriers
holding me back just because I
was a woman, had to be broken.
I moved to the Ahmedabad where
I could work and fend for myself
without being told that I was
a woman.

I always wanted to travel

around the world and when I and
a friend decided to visit Australia
and New Zealand on vacation,
it meant I had to part with an
entire years savings. To say it
was totally worth it would be an
understatement. The moment I
landed in New Zealand, I fell in
love with the country and I knew
this is the place where I can chase

my dreams. I went back to India

and worked hard on my English
and with my skill sets, I found it
easy to get a work visa.
The first place I settled down
in New Zealand was in Wellington
and my first job was at a local dairy
farm. Coming from the hot and
humid conditions back in India,
the cold in New Zealand did take
its toll on me initially as it became
unbearable at times. Emotionally
as well, I came close to breaking
down many times.
But with time, things got easier
and with helpful friends I had
around me, I started to enjoy my
stay in New Zealand.
I found the love of my life Jason
Stokes, in my next job at a fruit
and veggie store. The love I saw
in his eyes was enough to make up
my mind to spend the rest of my
life with him.
We are now a family and have
moved to Auckland. I can never
thank god enough, for where and
what I am today. A girl born in

a dusty little village in Gujarat,

settled down with family in a place
like Auckland
One of the biggest things that
this country has given me is selfrespect. It gave me the opportunity
in life to express myself and
achieve what I wanted to.
What I have also learnt from
my life is that perseverance always
works.
Secret to success is that when
life asks you if you are ready for
the rigor, you got to smile and
say, yes!

him in his character.
The story of Bajrangi Bhaijaan,
which also stars Kareena Kapoor

love during a journey from India
to Pakistan.
I portray a Pakistani reporter
in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The
character helps Salman Khans
character with his journey,
Nawazuddin said. Talking of his
past days as a reporter, he said:
I reached a saturation point in
acting, so I wanted to put myself
into an uncomfortable zone, I
became reporter for a channel. I
covered Lok Sabha elections. I did
eight to 10 episodes as reporter.
Having real life experience
for the character sure comes

extra efforts.
It is not a filmy reporter. It is
more based on real life reporters
and it is a Pakistani character,
so I have tried to keep as much
as Urdu words as possible. Id
watched plenty of Pakistani
reporters and Indian reporters,
whom I knew. We combined them
all with directors input to create
this character, added Nawaz.

Thank you Auckland

Thank you to everyone who helped shape our
city for the next 10 years and beyond.
This 10-year budget was the largest and most
exciting conversation we have ever had, with
more than 27,000 people from all over the
region providing us with their views.
From region-wide decisions to local board priorities, you
stepped up and told us what you wanted.
Following months of dialogue and debate with councillors,
local boards and the community, we have developed a plan.
The plan meets the two key demands from Aucklanders:
keep rates affordable and debt low, and finally start fixing
our transport problems.

We agreed to keep the average general rates rise to 2.5 per cent
in 2015/2016. This is an average increase of 4.2 per cent for
residential, 1.4 per cent for business and a decrease of 9.7 per
cent for farm/lifestyle properties. We will also work with central
government to agree how Auckland can raise its alternative
transport funding. This is likely to require legislative change and
could take some years to establish.
We know Aucklanders want us to start investing in fixing transport
now, so to do so we agreed an Accelerated Transport Programme
which includes additional investment of $523 million over the
next three years. To help fund the councils share, a three-year
Interim Transport Levy will be established from 2015/2016. The
levy will be set at $113.85 a year for non-business ratepayers
