Working Conditions
Most automotive service technicians work a 40-hour, five-day week. Some evening, weekend or holiday work may be
required. The work is sometimes noisy and dirty.
There is some risk of injury involved in working with power tools and near exhaust gases.
Automotive service technicians are employed by automotive repair shops, specialty repair shops, service facilities,
car and truck dealerships, and by large organizations that own fleets of vehicles.
Journeyperson wage rates vary, but generally range from $28 to $45 an hour plus benefits.
Experienced automotive service technicians may advance to service manager or shop foreman. Some automotive
service technicians open their own repair facilities.
Working in Alberta
To work as an automotive service technician in Alberta, a person must be a registered apprentice, an Alberta-certified
journeyperson, or hold a valid recognized credential.
Individuals possessing a valid recognized credential in Alberta are eligible to receive a Blue Seal business
credential after completing the necessary requirements.
Apprenticeship Training
The term of apprenticeship for an automotive service technician is 4 years (four 12-month periods) including a
minimum of 1500 hours of on-the-job training and 8 weeks of technical training each year.
An applicant who previously completed courses of study or work experience related to the Automotive
Service Technician trade or holds a related journeyperson certificate and has the employer's recommendation,
may qualify for credit that could reduce the term of apprenticeship. Inquiries about credit for previously
completed courses of study or work experience can be directed to an apprentice representative at
any Apprenticeship and Industry Training Office.
A person who has previous training or work experience in the trade and wants to determine their level of
skill and knowledge for entry or advanced standing in an apprenticeship program may complete the Prior

A high school student can become an apprentice and gain credits toward apprenticeship training and a
high school diploma at the same time under the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

The Role:
The Tesla Regional Trainer position requires someone who is flexible, proactive, highly organized, and

professional appearance. The Tesla Regional Trainer will take responsibility for Service Center support,
mentoring Service Technicians in areas of technical knowledge and procedures, and promoting

Provide service specific training to Tesla Motors technicians on electric vehicles equipped with
complex automotive/electromechanical systems (powertrain, passive restraint system,
steering/suspension/brakes, thermal management). Provide specific & general training on high voltage
DC systems.
Extensive travel; will spend 75% of the time training in the field.
Train and develop Service Technicians on inspection, repair, and service of Tesla electric
vehicles.
Knowledge of: methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and
repair of vehicles.
Develop training materials in close consultation with Service and Field Service Engineering.
Communicate field issues and work closely with Field Service Engineering to support customer
vehicles.
Ensure that programs and processes are developed, assessed, communicated, and administered
in compliance with Teslas objectives.
Assist with operations in Service Centers at designated regions that include: special tooling
inventory audits, vehicle troubleshooting, and generating weekly field reports back to training
headquarters.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY (AOR)
