Event Ad
Description:

This is a full bleed event ad done in color using a scanned image, created
using only Microsoft Word. The ad is for a charity benefit dinner.

Date: May 15, 2015

Course/Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word
Epson Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find an already existing, high quality image.

Properly scan it to use for a full bleed.
Design and edit flier in Word.

Process:

I started out by finding an image in a National Geographic magazine and

scanning it to my computer. I liked this image because of its high quality and
the content. When looking at the image I immediately could think of where
I wanted grouping and white space. After putting my image into Microsoft
Word I made some rectangle shapes to be banners for my text and title in
order to give the text good visibility. I put in the text and immediately started
my hunt for a good font to go with my African image. I felt like the title font was
exactly what I was looking for when I found it. Then I wanted to find another
font to use as a contrasting but complimentary body copy. Then I moved to
working on the color scheme. I liked the prominent reds and decided to use
its complementing color on the color wheel. I messed with different places for
text and color until I ended up with the final product.

Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Use Adobe Illustrator to create a professional logo that can be used in different
ways.

Process:

I liked this project because it allowed me to use more of my art background.

Since Im a painter, I enjoyed using the pen tool and brush to make my own
designs and logos. After getting thirteen votes on my three logos, I chose the
one with the most votes to refine and use for the final product. I did the outline
of the corgi using the pen tool and then refined it with the brush tool. I also
downloaded the Instagram font so I could use that in the title, to make it more
legit. I used an orange color for the word Corgi because that is what color
most corgis are. I wanted to keep it monochromatic because I like simplicity and
I wanted the corgi itself to stand out with a black silhouette. I also decided to
make the word Instagram bigger to place more emphasis on it. These designs
are actually being used for an Instagram organization.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided folding brochure.

Date: July 12, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Use all three programs to design a two sided brochure in color.

Process:

First, I did some sketches. I wanted a horizontal layout because I knew I wanted
to use a long picture of a sunset as my cover photo. I used the light blue from the
sky in the photograph on my subtitle to bring the colors together. I had the idea
of making the word Arizona black so that it looked almost like a silhouette, just
like the cacti in the photo. Then I started to design the first fold you see when it
is opened. I wanted to use a lot of photos to show how beautiful Arizona is, so I
decided to use a grid to bring them all together in a collage. I used long, white
rectangles to make the grid, tracing a grid I made with guidelines locked in place.
Then after I got rid of the guidelines, I made sure everything was lined up perfectly.
The next page was the inside when it is completely unfolded. I wanted to keep my
black and blue theme going and used the same font for the subtitles. Then I typed
out what I wanted to say about the images I placed in the specific categories. I took
my animal photo and used Adobe Photoshop to get rid of the background so I
could use a text wrap around it.
On the back of the brochure I put the logo I designed for a travel agency. I did
quite a few sketches for the design and liked using the Arizona flag, which took
some time to make in Adobe Illustrator. I used overlapping letters to make it say
AZ Travel Agency. I liked that it rhymed. My final stages of making the brochure
included printing, trimming, scoring, and folding.

Montage

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Correctly blend three images together to make one image.

Process:

I had exactly what I wanted to do in my head, so I first found the images online I
wanted to use. Then I used my crop tool to make the first image 8.511.
I selected Christs face in my second image using the lasso tool and moved
him to my first image, then I added a mask. I then used black paint and a 100%
opacity, soft-edged brush, to paint away the hard edges. My text was typed in
using the text tool. Then I worked with different fonts and sizes to get it to what
I was going for. I decided to add in a background to bring everything together.
I went to www.cgtextures.com to sign up and download some textures to
work with as a background. I wanted to use a font that would match the roman
numerals on the pocket watch in my first image. So I went to www.dafonts.com
and downloaded Roman Font 7 Regular to use in two of the words in my text for
emphasis and contrast. I later went in and moved some of the layers, enlarged
the image of Christ, as well as put an inner glow and drop shadow on my text.

Adobe Photoshop
T3i Rebel Cannon Camera

Objectives:

Use personal, high quality photos to make a flier.

Process:

I knew I wanted to take a photo of my new bunny for the flier but wasnt sure
what color scheme to do because my bunny is black and white. So I decided to
use a simple background to do a monochromatic color scheme. I took quite a
few pictures of the bunny using natural light through the window. I wanted to
make sure there wasnt any harsh light so it could be a soft looking photo. I used
my T3i Rebel Cannon camera to capture the shot. Then I uploaded my photo into
Adobe Photoshop to do editing and my design. I made sure to edit using color
balance, saturation, levels and sharpness. Then I began designing my project
using rectangles that I matched to the color wheel. The teal I used is from the
teal in the background of my image and it matched the teal in the color wheel
perfectly. I also liked how it looked with the gray basket behind the text box. I
used the picture as a full bleed and made it 8.511 landscape so I could use my
white space and have a close image of the bunny. I used the color drop tool to
get the lighter shades of teal to use in my text. After writing all my text I used the
different shades of teal to make a monochromatic rectangle displaying each of
the different shades I used and placed the letters from the word teal in each
box, changing each letter to contrast the shade behind it. This was probably my
favorite part of the design because it was fun to put together.

Flier
Description:

Black and white flier for a graduate leadership conference.

Date: May 9, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Learn how to design a flier in black and white using InDesign.

Process:

When sketching ideas for this flier, my focus was on the principles taught in the
FOCUS process. I wanted to make sure all the FOCUS rules were followed, and
so I created sketches that I felt would illustrate that effectively. Once I chose my
favorite sketch, I started to design it in Adobe InDesign. I first placed the photo
and made sure it the image was clear. Next I made long, black rectangles using
the shape tool to start creating what I was going for. I used the text tool to add
text, chose appropriate fonts and shapes. Then I inserted the downloaded
logo and used the lines I drew from the ruler to make sure it was aligned with
the word Graduate. I also used some kerning to make the title more legible.
I also put the time and date in an obvious place because it is most important
for people to remember, other than what it is for. I added the rest of the
requirements and made sure everything was perfectly aligned.

Business Cards
Description:

Business card design using an originally designed logo.

Date: June 14, 2015

Course/Instructor:
Comm130 Section 03
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe Illustrator & InDesign

Objectives:

Learn to create a unique business card.

Process:

I started out sketching ideas for a personal logo for my husband. He likes sailing so I started
with sail boats but I didnt want it to look like a sailing business. I wanted something more
versatile. That is when I came up with using a sailing compass. After doing a few sketches I
started to create my compass on Adobe Illustrator. First I made a triangle using the shape
tool and stretched it into a long pointed triangle. I then duplicated it, flipped it, and made it
black to make the shadow part of the pointed triangle. I then duplicated that, flipped it and
did that process two more times to make the four points.
I then used the shape tool to make a circle for the middle of the compass. Next, I made a
new triangle using the same method but made it solid black and smaller to make the next
four points of the compass. Then I used the circle tool to make a new circle without fill. I
made the stroke thick and made it its own shape to bring everything together and I put it
over the shape so that each of the smaller, black points touched it at its point. I then colored
the shape gold but left a black stroke to keep its distinct shape.
I took the logo and placed it in InDesign where I created my business cards front and
back. I noticed the S in Schulte lined up perfectly with where the compass points south
and decided to use that S as the symbol for south. I made the S in Schulte match the
other directional letters in the compass by making it the same font and color of the other
directional letters. I used a san serif font on the first letters to make it contrast the other
letters in his name.
I also used the drop tool to make the beige background. I used the text tool to enter his
information on the card and place it.

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe Illustrator & InDesign

Objectives:

Make a letterhead that has enough room in the design for a letter.

Process:

For the letterhead I copied everything from the business card and rearranged
it to look like a letterhead. I mostly just worked with resizing objects and the
opacity for the watermark. I also turned the logo to be pointing towards the
contact information to make it have more of a focal point and flow. I also
turned the business card on its side and moved the logo and name. I feel like
it turned out the way I wanted.

TextWrangler & Photoshop

Objectives:

A personally designed web page that shows off a logo I created.

Process:

This was a challenging project for me because I have never used HTML or
CSS. I used text wrangler to make up my HTML and then CSS. I made the
border color match my logo by using the color tool in Adobe Illustrator. I
copied the color hex and placed it in my CSS. I also used that color for my title
background as well as the heading under my introduction. I also changed the
color of my link to my blog to match the indigo in my logo, using the same
method. This helps it to stand out so it looks click-able as well as repetitious.
I used a validator to make sure that my HTML and CSS would work properly.
I also found online how to make the borders curved because I felt like that
would look better. I also moved my logo into the center to make the focal point
have more flow. My favorite part was applying the wood background to this.
My husband and I both love wood and I felt like this fit with my message and
gave it a little flavor. Another fun thing I did was make it so that on the website,
the background image stays put while scrolling the words.
