D AT E , C L A S S & I N S T R U C T O R
12 July 2015 Visual Communication 130-17 with Brother Stucki

P R OG R A M S & TOO L S U S E D
For this project, I used paper to sketch my ideas, a clothing
catalog, a scanner, and Microsoft Word.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Design of full bleed color flier for a charitable event. The objective
to this assignment was to learn how to make quailty scans and do
design work in Microsoft Word. Working with word is challenging,
but its important to be comfortable on all software.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

I am aiming to catch the attention of high income adults who
love to cook at home and want to give back to the world. I chose
an image, color scheme, and design that would feel high class
and fun at the same time.

I started by doing research and brainstorming a number ideas

for the flyer. After my final sketch I went to Microsoft Word to
create the flyer. It was a big challenge because my image kept
moving anytime I made a correction. It was also a challenge to
adapt my already planned design to a restrictive program like
Microsoft Word. My greatest success was creating a professional looking design despite the challenging medium.

12 July 2015 Visual Communication 130-17 with Brother Stucki

P R OG R A M S & TOO L S U S E D
I used both Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator to complete
this project.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Design an original logo and business card for a business. It
should correspond with the letterhead also made for this class.
The objective is to learn how to use repetition to create a
stationery set. Also, this is to practice using white space.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

The feeling I was aiming for sophisticated and professional, but
avoiding being clinical and stuffy. The audience would be anyone
in need of personal counseling in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area,
or associates that she may meet at conferences.

I made a very simple logo in Adobe InDesign by layering two

rectangles and my clients title. For the back of the card, I
decided to repeat the rectangle outline from the front of the
card. I experimented with different placements, but found
having two rectangles that bleed off the page brought a great
sense of unity without being predictable.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

The feeling I was aiming for sophisticated and professional, but
avoiding being clinical and stuffy. The audience would be anyone

I made a box around the entire sheet and centering the logo. The
box worked well because it visually alluded to the business card
design. Placing the block of information was tricky, but I ended up
liking it centered along the bottom best. I felt like that placement
under the title also tied it in nicely to the business card. As for
the typography, I was careful to keep the information small and
create contrast between the body copy and the title.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

I made this to be a pocket resource for a counselor to hand out to
patients going through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I wanted the
message to be soothing and helpful.
I made my credit card sized accordion brochure in Adobe InDesign.
I also used Adobe Illustrator to make a new original logo and Adobe
Photoshop to manipulate my photos to work in my design. As far
as tools go, I used a brand new blade in my Exacto knife for quality
cutting and a bone folder to make clean folds.

LABELING &
MISLABELING

PERSONALIZATION

TEN COMMON
THINKING ERRORS
A Resource For Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy

This is an extreme form of overgeneralization.

Instead of describing your error, you attach
a negative label to yourself: Im a loser.
Hes a jerk. Mislabeling involves describing
an event with language that is highly colored
and emotionally loaded.
Instead of thinking, He made a mistake,
you might label your neighbor as an idiot.

As much as wed like to say we dont think

the world revolves around us, its easy to
personalize everything. If a friend doesnt
call back, you may assume, She must be
mad at me, or if a co-worker is grumpy, you
might conclude, He doesnt like me. When
you catch yourself personalizing situations,
take time to point out other possible factors
that may be influencing the circumstances.

MAGNIFICATION &
MINIMIZATION

EMOTIONAL REASONING

ALL OR NOTHING
THINKING

LABELING &
MISLABELING

You exaggerate the importance of things

(such as your goff-up or someone elses
achievement), or you inappropriately shrink
things until they appear tiny. If you fall short
on meeting your financial goals one month you
may think, Im going to end up bankrupt, or
Ill never have enough money to retire, even
though theres no evidence that the situation
is nearly that dire.

Our emotions arent always based on reality

but we often assume those feelings are
rational. If youre worried about making a
career change, you might assume, If Im this
scared about it, I just shouldnt change jobs.
Or, you may be tempted to assume, If I feel
like a loser, I must be a loser. Its essential
to recognize that emotions, just like our
thoughts, arent always based on the facts.

You see things in black and white categories.

If your performance falls short of perfect,
you see yourself as a total failure.

This is an extreme form of overgeneralization.

Instead of describing your error, you attach
a negative label to yourself: Im a loser.
Hes a jerk. Mislabeling involves describing
an event with language that is highly colored
and emotionally loaded.

FORTUNE TELLING

OVERGENERALIZATION

UNREAL IDEAL

You anticipate that things will turn out badly,

and you feel convinced that your prediction
is an already established fact. Although none
of us knows what will happen in the future,
we sometimes like to try our hand at fortunetelling. We think things like, Im going to
embarrass myself tomorrow, or If I go on a
diet, Ill probably just gain weight. Remind
yourself of all the other possible outcomes.

Its easy to take one particular event and

generalize it to the rest of our life. If you failed
to close one deal, you may decide, Im bad
at closing deals. Or if you are treated poorly
by one family member, you might think,
Everyone in my family is rude. Take notice
of times when an incident may apply to only
one specific situation, instead of all other
areas of life.

Making unfair comparisons about ourselves

and other people can ruin our motivation.
Looking at someone who has achieved much
success and thinking, I should have been
able to do that, isnt helpful, especially if that
person had some lucky breaks or competitive
advantages along the way. Commit to focusing
on your own path to success.

MINDREADING

We can never be sure what someone else is

thinking. Yet, everyone occasionally assumes
they know whats going on in someone elses
mind. Thinking things like, He must have
thought I was stupid at the meeting, makes
inferences that arent necessarily based on reality.
Remind yourself that you may not be
making accurate guesses.

Perhaps you have two categories of

coworkers in your mindthe good ones and
the bad ones. Or maybe you look at each
project as either a success or a failure.

Instead of thinking, He made a mistake,

you might label your neighbor as an idiot.

As much as wed like to say we dont think

the world revolves around us, its easy to
personalize everything. If a friend doesnt
call back, you may assume, She must be
mad at me, or if a co-worker is grumpy, you
might conclude, He doesnt like me. When
you catch yourself personalizing situations,
take time to point out other possible factors
that may be influencing the circumstances.

DISQUALIFYING
THE POSITIVE

If nine good things happen, and one bad thing,

sometimes we filter out the good and hone in
on the bad. Maybe we declare we had a bad
day, despite the positive events that occurred.
Filtering out the positive can prevent you from
establishing a realistic outlook on a situation.
Develop a balanced outlook by noticing both
the positive and the negative.

SHOULD STATEMENTS

You try to motivate yourself with shoulds

and shouldnts, as if you had to be whipped
and punished before you could be expected
to do anything. Musts and oughts are
also offenders. The emotional consequence
is guilt. when you direct should statements
toward others, you feel anger, frustration,
and resentment.

EVENT FLIER

12 July 2015 Visual Communication 130-17 with Brother Stucki

P R OG R A M S & TOO L S U S E D
I started out by sketching on paper then used Adobe InDesign
to complete this project.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Design a black and white promotional flier on Adobe InDesign
to promote a graduate leadership conference held by Vouant
Communications. The flier must have half inch margins on all
sides and use appropriate typography.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

I am aiming to catch the attention of college seniors and recent
graduates. I made my flier appeal to this audience by making it
profession, sharp, and clean. They way I cropped the image and
the ample amount of white space helped me achieve this look.

10

I made guides dividing my page into nice boxes to make a grid. I

used the rule of thirds to create a balanced flier with an interesting,
fresh feel. Notice that the left third of the page contain and
image, and the bottom two thirds of the page contains the title
and content, leaving the top third for white space. I utilized the
principle of repetition by using a dividing bar in several different
locations and using the same typeface throughout the design.

For this project, I used my Canon EOS 70D as well as Adobe
Photoshop. Photoshop was used to crop and then add text.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Take six photos to demonstrate your skills with lighting, focus,
and the rule of thirds. The objective is to learn how to better work
with cameras. Then pick out a color scheme based on one of the
photos and create a poster using repeating elements.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

More than anything, this project taught me to look around and
observe the world before snapping pictures. It is equivalent to
formulating a plan and doing research before jumping onto the
computer.

12

I was able to capture a focused image with a blurred background

by focusing, or metering, the sign and then holding down the
button halfway and repositioning the camera to frame the picture.
One trick I learned for further blurring out the background was
zooming in and then positioning myself and camera before taking
the pictures. To find a color scheme that would work well with
my photo, I used the eyedropper tool and a color wheel.

For this project, I used old family photos, a photo from my photo
design project, a scanner, and Adobe Photoshop.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Design an original montage that follows a spiritual theme that
incorrporates and uses two or more images. The objective is
to learn how to combine pictures with no hard edges using
feathering and the mask tool.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

I wanted to convey the importance of and beauty in family
history. I wanted to inspire people to be interested in those
that came before them, and those that will come after.

14

I first edited the background photo with many techniques

and filters, including adjusting curves and applying a warming
photo filter. In other window, I edited the picture of my great
grandma to restore it and remove mold spots and creases. I
brought the pictures all togher and arranged them in a pleasing
way, and then created masks on each layer. I then used a soft
edged brush and black and white paint to finesse the layers to
look more natural and so we could overlap each other.

I used TextWrangler, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and
Google Chrome to complete this project.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Create a website to showcase a logo designed in this Visual
Communications class. Learn how to change an image file as a
.png and optimise it for the web. Also gain a basic understanding
of HTML5 and CSS. Learn to alter typefaces and colors.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

The message I am aiming to send is one of trust, confidence, and
wisdom.
I created this webpage using TextWrangler. I also used their
validator to make sure my code was error free. To pick colors from
my webpage, I decided to use the eyedropper tool to select the
hex colors from my logo. This usage of the principle of repetition
helped unify my website and give it a clean and put together
feel. also added extra white space around my logo to help it stand
out more and direct the flow of the piece.

For this project, I used pen and paper to sketch out my ideas as
well as Adobe Illustrator to make the vector logos.

DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

Design an original logo for a company that is unique and easily
remembered. Do research to be able to make a design that
communicates their brand. Show the final in three different
forms: in color, in grayscale, and in white with a color background.

MESSAGE & PROCESS

Promoting my familys business, Sweetnote Candy. This logo
will be used on candy wrappers to promote awareness.

18

I feel like I was successful in creating a current and original

logo that will stand the test of time. I used handwritten type
with a very precise sans serif for the website in varying sizes
for contrast. After scanning in my hand-illustrated type and
cleaning it up, I was able to turn it into a vector image using the
pen tool and direct selection tools to make adjustments to make
it exactly how I wanted it. It took a lot of time to trace it with the
pen tool, but it was worth the learning experience.
