FORM B
1. Title of the project: Smart Helmet for Cooling Comfort.
2.

Summary of the project:

Invention of new devices which can save lives of

vehicle drivers is a great concern in modern era. Besides safety these devices must also be
comfortable, as today everything is evaluated by the comfort of users.
Scooters and motorbikes accounts for about 72% of 150 million vehicles plying on the roads
by 2012 in India. The primary safety feature used by two wheeler drivers is a hard shell
Helmet with a thick foam inside which serves as a shock absorber during the collision. These
Helmets are commercially available as well as having heat insulation properties. This results
in low heat transfer between head and outside environment. This creates a very
uncomfortable situation which decreases the ability to concentrate and creates a dangerous
environment for long distance travelers in hot weather conditions.
So to provide an improved energy efficient helmet this new study aims to design and build a
helmet which is cost effective, maintains/ improves safety of the rider embedded with
efficient cooling system.

3. Technical details of the Projects or Origin of the Proposal:

Definition of the problem or Objectives: wearing a helmet is mandetery as
per law and required for safety of the two wheeler rider. A number of good quality
helmets are commercially available but they becomes a hot cap in Indian condition for
most of the time in the year. So if without compromising a safety of the head of the
rider if a cooling system is fitted in the helmet it will provide respite from hot weather
to large masses in India.
So it has been planned to develop a new kind of helmet which carries an energy efficient
cooling system.

Work Plan: We know that Helmet is one of the most important equipment for a two
wheeler rider. But during hot weather condition many riders feel uncomfortable to
wear it. Its main cause is the feeling of heat in the Helmet during long distance travel.
So to cool it we are using a device which will provides a comfortable as well as
maintain the cost effectiveness and safety for the rider.
In this work, we are making a helmet in which we will use a thermoelectric module to
cool the helmet through a fan. This will have two steps:
1. The fan attached will not require continuous supply of power but after initial start it
will automatically run through the magnetic force of strong magnets attached to it.
(this will also be a novel device fabricated by us)
2. This fan will generate electricity because the magnet attached to it will be moving
and will generate continuous electricity. This electricity which will be used to run the
thermoelectric module. Hence this will require a small battery running for a very
smaller time so negligible contribution of the heat dissipated from it will make it a
very efficient cooling system.

Methodology:
In this work, we will take a helmet which will be fitted with a thermoelectric module to
cool it and a fan to improve the area of effectiveness. This will have two steps:
1. The fan will be devised which will automatically run through the magnetic force of
strong magnets (this will also be a novel device fabricated by us) no power supply
will be needed by it.
2. As this fan has a magnet housed in a coil so while rotating it will generate continuous
electricity as a turbine at power generation plant. This electricity will fed back to the
thermoelectric module which in turn will create a temperature gradient on its two
surfaces. The cool side of this module will be kept inside fitted with the fan discussed
above. The fan will rotate the cool air in the area available which will down the
ambient temperature of the helmet.
The main feature of this will be that it will require a small battery running for a very little
time so negligible contribution of the heat dissipated from it will make it a very efficient
cooling system without contributing to the weight of the helmet and keeping the price of
another battery reduces from the total cost.
