1. State Standard(s):
H1.2.7 - Examine artifacts from around the world for important clues as to how people lived
their daily lives.

3. Objective(s):
Students will be able to locate Ireland on the world map. (I can locate Ireland on a map)
Students will be able to identify facts about Ireland. (I know facts about Ireland)

5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement: Teacher will introduce that our class will be studying
Ireland for multicultural week. Teacher will create a discussion about countries students
have traveled to. Teacher will show a picture of the world and locate Ireland on the map
and on the big globe. Teacher will show students where the Atlantic Ocean is located
along with the Irish Sea, Dublin and more.
b. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences: Teacher will have students talk
about things they wonder or would like to know about Ireland. Teacher will read pages 413 aloud and discuss facts about Ireland on each page. Teacher will question students
about facts that are read to ensure students are comprehending what is being read.
After the pages are read and discussed about Irelands location, weather and climate,
school and people the students will turn and tell their partner a few things that they have
learned about Ireland.
After students have discussed what they have learned, Teacher will take the facts and
write them on the square map about Ireland as the students share their facts aloud.
Teacher will make sure every student has the opportunity to share a fact about Ireland.
c. Closure: Teacher will end lesson with asking students questions:
What ocean is on the West side of Ireland? Atlantic Ocean

Which separates Great Britain from Ireland? The Irish Sea


Is Northern Ireland a part of Ireland? No, it belongs to the UK
What is the capital of Ireland? Dublin
Is Dublin an island? Yes, it is surrounded by water
d. Extension: If time permits, students can add more facts to their notes about Ireland.
6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:
Teacher will make sure students have plenty of time to copy the notes and facts down about
Ireland. Teacher will use the picture book and show pictures about what is being read and talked
about for visual learners.
7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:
a. Formative: Teacher observation and questioning during reading
b. Summative: Notes written and facts being shared about Ireland
8. Homework Assignment: There will not be any homework assigned for this lesson.
9. Reflection:
a. Strengths: I was super nervous to teach this lesson because my knowledge of Ireland is
not bountiful. As we talked about the location, the ocean surrounding the island, the sea
nearby and the capital it was getting easier. When we read the book about Ireland the kids
remained engaged because their questions were being answered. I have come to realize
that as long as a teacher has reading strategies and teaching strategies, anything can be
taught! Sometimes we learn as we teach too! The kids learned more than 20 facts about
Ireland in just 9 pages of the book. I am excited to continue the book to see what else we
all can learn.
b. Concerns: My lesson took a little longer than anticipated and I had to cut writing a
little short today, but it all worked out. Ms. Rodriguez said that it is okay to take extra
time one day as long as you make up the time on another day in the same week. She has
been keeping tallies on how many times I say okay during a lesson. She said during this
lesson I would end my statements or questions with okay, k, etc. I said it about 25 times.
We have come to the conclusion that I say it mostly when I am nervous about the content
I am teaching because it stopped when I moved on to phonics and writing. I am working
on not ending my statements in okay or k. Other than pacing and saying okay all of the
time, the lesson was a success and fun to teach!
The students have a difficult time differentiating between a city, state, country and
continent. It is my goal to teach them the differences as much as possible throughout the
next few weeks.
