Gifted and talented Evesham students furthering education
with new summer enrichment program host open house
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Students in the Evesham
Township School District will
someday grow up to enter all
manner of careers fields, from
finance to law to science.

Now, as a result of a new summer program for gifted and talented students in the district,
those students will have the
chance to better experience the
academic disciplines behind
those fields during summer
break.

Thanks to the districts new

gifted and talented summer enrichment program, about 25 students from grades two through
eight have spent a few weeks of
their summer back at school

The June 23 storm that ravaged

South Jersey brought winds upward of 70 mph and hundreds of
thousands of power outages.
Now, weeks later, many towns
in the area are turning to a more
long-term goal beyond returning
power and removing debris trying to determine what can be
done to serve residents better
when future storms inevitably
hit.
Evesham Township has been
no different in this task, and at its
July 15 meeting, town council discussed what the township did
right and what could be done differently in the future.
Mayor Randy Brown said just
hours before the July 15 meeting
he and township manager Tom
Czerniecki met with representatives of Atlantic City Electric to
discuss why it took so long after
the storm, four to five days, for
residents in the southern end
of town to have their power return.
According to Brown, ACE explained it lost two major transmission ports. Those alone took
two days to fix, and needed to be
completed before ACE could even

begin work on returning power to

residents directly.
PSE&G, which serves a majority of the homes in town, lost no
transmission ports.
Brown said moving forward,
he believed the township would
have a direct contact with ACE,
as it does with PSE&G, and if
something similar were to happen, the township would have the
ability to communicate information to residents faster.
Another concern Brown said
the township communicated to
ACE, especially when dealing
with an area such as the southern
end of town where there are
fewer roads, is the company must
remove trees and tangled-up
wires off the street faster.
Czerniecki said he told ACE
the township had 90 percent of its
police force working non-stop because traffic lights were out on
major highways, in addition to
running standard patrols and trying to manage traffic limited in
and out of the southern end of
town.
If they had just cleared the
wires off, we could have opened
those roads up and given some of
our guys a break and let them get

in our opinion

Ready for school?

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

Of course youre not, but theres no better time to prepare than now
ts hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-toschool advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought,
did we sleep through all of July?
Of course we didnt; its just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally down
month.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, were asking that you put it at the forefront of
your brain or at least in part of your
brain for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of

Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcoming
school year. So whats on your mind? Send
us your questions, and well do our best to
get answers.

questions for school leaders about the

new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can

pass along to you.

Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about repairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still providing great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership between schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relationship starts with effective communication.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.

Brown: Changes with electric would be process

BROWN
Continued from page 1

refreshed and take care of their families,

Czerniecki said.
Brown said another problem on a state
level was New Jersey is one of the few
states that does not have a smart grid electrical system, in which computers could
automatically tell power companies where
electrical outages are.
You (residents) got to call in, municipalities call in, and theyve (electric compa-

nies) got boots on the ground to go out and

find out where their outages are, Brown
said.
Overall, though, Brown said the township doesnt own the electric companies, so
any changes would ultimately be a backand-forth process between the companies
and the municipalities.
Its a process, and its a process with
which we work really well with PSE&G,
and I think the next storm will be better
with ACE, Brown said.
Resident Rosemary Bernardi, who lives
in the southern end of town, commended
the township and police department on its
work during the storm and aftermath.

Bernardi also offered several suggestions, such as opening community centers

more quickly, seeing if theres anything
civilian subgroups could be doing to offload tasks from overworked officers in
such situations and if the township could
do more in maintaining the trees before
they get caught in the power wires.
Brown said he believed Bernardis last
suggestion was the responsibility of the
electric companies.
I dont think its fair for the taxpayers to
have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to have to take trees out that really
should be the electric companies problem, Brown said.

these programs have the chance

Danielle Magulick, director of
curriculum and instruction for
the district, said the summer provides the district a good opportunity to invite all gifted- and talented-identified students to further
their education.
Summer is a great time to
bring them together across all
nine schools, and they can see
each other and then kind of extend and take their learning beyond what theyve done throughout the school year, Magulick
said.
Students in the program can
choose to participate in two
courses daily for two weeks, with
each class having morning and afternoon sessions and class sizes
between five and 15 students at a
time.
To highlight the success of the
program, the district gave parents and members of the public a
chance to attend an open house
on July 16 where the students
could share their experiences and
those in attendance could view
the students work.
Were really focusing on that
21st century standards brand, really within it there is a lot of
