Method Statement For


Construction of Wet Mix Macadam
1.1

General
This method describes the laying of Wet Mix Macadam over prepared GSB as per
drawing and Technical Specification No. 406 from Km 164.500 to Km 200.000

1.2

Temporary Works
Road diversion, drainage diversion etc shall be done as per site requirements.

The surface levels of GSB/WMM will be recorded in accordance with clause


902.3 and tolerances will be kept within limits as specified in Table 900.1. The
measurements of surface levels for GSB shall be taken on offset points fixed
transversely i.e.: 0.0, 2.25, 5.875, 9.5, 12.5 and 13.38/13.88 (end point) and of
WMM at 2.25, 5.875, 9.5, & 11.15 at every 10mts longitudinal distance (level
sheet enclosed).
Reference pegs will be fixed on either side at 600 mm distance from edge lines
of WMM and at 10 mts longitudinal distances.
Surface undulations will be kept within tolerance and will be checked and
rectified regularly
Survey of the GSB layer will be done and got approved from RE by
submission of release form, prior to the commencement of WMM operation.

Utilities
Utilities like electric poles, telephone lines, cables etc are identified and being shifted.

Traffic Arrangements and Control

Temporary signboards will be kept all along the working zone to alert the people.
Flagman will be engaged to ensure free flow of traffic whenever & wherever
required.

Access
Access to the site will be through existing road by providing ramps.

Work Methodology

1.7.1 Plants and Equipment


Crusher Plant, Batching Plant, Hydraulic Motor Grader, Paving machine, Vibratory
Roller and Paver finisher.

1.7.2 Construction
i.

Raw material will be obtained from Basaltic rock formation.

ii.

It shall be crushed through crusher plant into different sizes.

iii.

The different sizes will be blended in suitable proportion to get requisite mix.

iv.

The mix shall be prepared in the mixing plant having provision for controlled
addition of water and forced mixing arrangement like pug mill. Due allowance
shall be made for evaporation losses.

v.

The mix material shall be transported from mixing plant to the site.

vi.

Previously prepared GSB layer, if required, shall be re-inspected and remedial


action (if any) will be carried out prior to the delivery of WMM.

vii.

To ensure lateral confinement of the layer Gravel shoulders and center median
confirming to clause 407 of Technical Specifications up to WMM top will be
prepared.

viii.

The material shall be spread in full width the help of a mechanical paver or
hydraulic grader.

ix.

Laying in two operations with paver finisher will be done. Segregation of WMM
along longitudinal joint shall be avoide.

x.

The segregated material, if any along the longitudinal section of the stretch will
be racked out before laying balance width of the carriageway.

xi.

Rolling shall be carried out longitudinally and uniformly over lapping each
preceding track at least by one-third width until the entire surface has been
rolled.

xii.

Rolling will be done longitudinally starting from lower edge to upper edge.
Material shall be compacted to required densith.

xiii.

High spot or depression will be corrected by removing or adding fresh material.

xiv.

All loose segregated or defective areas shall be made good in part or to the full
depth of the layer as required and re-compacted.

1.7.3 Inspection and Testing

Continuous level checking while grading is on to ensure proper grade and slope
with the help of reference pegs.
Moisture content shall be kept within tolerable limits.
Rolling shall be started after OMC is checked.
All other testing will be done as per section 900 of Tech. Specifications.

Safety hazards will be identified both at site as well as at Wet Mix plant.
All the workers and staff will be briefed about the dangerous hazards.
Trained operators will be deployed near crusher as well as at site.
The height of material in open truck will be always kept less than the height of the
sides of the truck to avoid spilling of material during transport.
Sign boards will be kept all along the working zones to alert the people. While
working adjacent to canals / waterways, proper barricading will be done to
ensure safety.

Tippers with stoppers will be used for transportation.


No material will be allowed to fall during transition.
Stagnant water (if any) at site will be de-watered prior to start of work at site.
Dumping of WMM material will be done under controlled conditions.
No material will be allowed to go into the existing waterways / canals.

Reinstatement / interphasing with next stage of work

Construction traffic shall not be allowed on finished surface except in emergency.


Any loose pockets or defective spots will be rectified before application of Prime
coat.
