STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

What can be more interesting and exciting than the structure of the world surrounding us?
Physicists extract the most fundamental knowledge about nature and make it serve the
mankind. The aspects to study physics appealed to me since high school.
While studying M.Sc in IIT Kanpur I have chosen nonlinear dynamics for my project.
Specially, dealing with integrable and nonintegrable systems are hard to deal with both
classically and quantum mechanically and many issues related to them are still largely
unsolved though many have been working on them for more than 300 years. So the focus of
the project is to understand the issues involved, learn the techniques needed, to address
the issues and apply the concepts of an instructive problem.
My interest in nonlinear system appeared when I was a first year student in M.Sc. under the
supervision of Prof. Sagar Chakraborty I set about project on Integrability in Non Linear
Dynamics. Our goal in the 1st semester of the project was to calculate analytically and
numerically the energy of a swinging atwoods machine which is integrable when its mass
ratio is 42 1 ( = 1,2,3 ). We have done the calculations for mass ratio 3.
For this last semester we are dealing chaotic trajectories in terms of widespread chaos by
the method of Chirikov criterion. This is what is termed widespread chaos .
A means of predicting approximately when resonant overlap will occur has been proposed
by Chirikov. So, we have considered a one-dimensional nonlinear quartic oscillator
perturbed by an external periodic force and we have predicted resonance overlap.
On an extra note, in the last summer I did a project on the topic Electronics Band Structures
in a family of one dimensional lattices under Prof. Santanu K Maiti in ISI Kolkata, where the
main object was finding the Hamiltonian of the atoms arranged in a series of Fibonacci
Chain (1- D) considering their site energy and nearest neighbour hopping energy. Calculating
eigenvalues and plotting their energy band diagram. Same analysis was done for ordered
system, random disordered system and correlated disordered system.
Of course, the main purpose of my longed for studies in IISER Kol is getting adequate
education to enter on a career in physics. I feel and hope you will be able to believe me,
judging from my supporting materials, that this is a field I can be good in.

In conclusion I must say that I would regard my being admitted to IISER Kol not only as a
great honour and success but more as a high responsibility and beginning of hard work. I
dont know whether I shall have this honour but if I do, I will spare no pains to justify it.
