‘Standard Specification for Steel Castings, Carbon, for General Application AASHTO DESIGNATION: M 103/M 103M-89 1. SCOPE 1.1 This specification covers carbon steel castings for general applications that require up to 70 xsi [485 MPa] minimum tensile strength. NOTE—Toe grades covered by this spcifi- cation represent materials that are suitable for assembly with other steel castings of wrought steel parts by fusion welling. Iti not intended ‘o imply that all these grades possess the same Aegre of weldability of thatthe same welding techniques cam be used on all casting. It ie the responsibilty of the purchaser to establish for himsef a suitable welding technique. 1.2. Several grades and two classes of steel castings are covered, as indicated below. The grade and class desired shall be specified by the purchaser. 1.2.1 Grade N-1—Chemical analysis aly. 1.2.2 Grade N-2—Heat-treated but ‘ot mechanically tested 1.2.3. Grade U-60-30 [415-205] — ‘Mechanically tested but not heat-treated. 1.2.4 Grades 60-30 (415-205), 65-35 (450-240), 70-36 (485-250), and 70-40 [485-275]—Heat-treated and mechani- cally tested. 1.2.5 Class 1 and Class 2 steel cast- ings shall be specified in accordance with 9.2. 1.3. The values stated in either inch- ‘pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the ST units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently ofthe other. Com- ‘ining values from the two systems may result in nooconformance with the specifi- cation. Inch-pound units are applicable for ‘material ordered to M 103 and SI units for ‘material ordered to M 103M. 100 2. Orders for material under this specification should include the following information in proper sequence. 4.1.1 Quantity, 4.1.2 . Specification, grade (1.2), and class (9.2), 4.1.3 Description ofthe casting by pattem oumber or drawing, 4.1.4 Options in the specification, and (ASTM DESIGNATION: A 27/A 27M-87) 4.1.5. Supplementary requirements desired, including standards of accept- 5, HEAT TREATMENT S.1_Allcastings of Grades N-2, 60-30 {415.205}, 65-35 [450-240], 70-36 {485.250}, and 70-40 [485-725] shall be heat-treated by full annealing, normsliz~ ing, normalizing and tempering, or quenching and tempering. Unless other- wise specified in the inquiry, contract, of ‘order, the castings may be heat-treated by ‘any one or combination of these heat- treatments atthe option of the manufac- turer, S.1.1 Heat-treatment shall be per- formed after castings have been allowed to cool from the pouring temperature to below the transformation range. ‘5.2 Fumace temperatures for beat- ‘treating shall be regulated by the use of yrometers. 6. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION 6.1. The stee! shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition prescribed in Table 1. Product analysis tolerances shall conform to the Product, ‘Analysis Tolerances shown in ASTM A TBI/A 781M. When residual element chemical content is of interest tothe pur- chaser, $54 may be considered, 7. TENSILE PROPERTIES 7A Except for Grades N-1 and N-2, fone tension test shall be performed on each heat and the mechanical properties thus determined shall conform to the M103, requirements specified in Table 2. The teasion test shall be performed in accord ance with ASTM A 370. 7.2 Test bars shall be poured in spe- cial blocks similar to those shown in Fig- ure 1 of ASTM A 781/A 781M ard from the same heat as the casting represented 7.3 Test coupons may be cut from the heat-treated (if required) castings or cast integrally withthe castings at the produc ers option. 7.4, The test bas for heat-treated castings shall be heat-treated in produc- tion furnaces tothe same procedure as the castings they represent. When specified by the purchaser, the test bars shall be heat- treated withthe castings. 7.S. Test specimens shall be machined to the form and dimeasioas shown in Fig- ure 6 of ASTM A 370. 7.6 Many specimen is machined improperly or if flaws ae revealed by machining or during testing, the specimen may be discarded and anotber substituted from the same heat. SPECIFICATIONS FOR MATERIALS 7.7 When this specification is applied to investment castings, test coupons and {ensioa test specimens shall be obtained and prepared as directed in $3.2 of ASTM ‘A T32/A 732M. Test coupons shall be heat Uueated as prescribed in 7.4. 8. RETESTS 8.1 Ifthe results ofthe mechanical tests for any eat, lt, oF casting do not conform to the requirements specified, retests are permitted as outlined in ASTM ‘4.370. At the manufacturer's option, cast- ings may be rebeat-treated and retested. ‘When castings are reheat-treated, they may not be reaustenitized more than 3 times without the approval ofthe pur- chaser. Testing after reheat treatment shall consist of the full number of specimens taken from locations complying withthe specification or order TABLE 1 Chemical Requirements Composition, % Carton?
