Will the names of the fallen soldiers be placed on the site?
This is a great tribute to the veterans who have made the ultimate
sacrifice. I would have liked to have seen the circular honor roll
completely encased by glass so that it could be a multi seasonal viewing
area.
It is well-intentioned but
1. Sorry, but it looks like a blown-up piece of religious statuary it is
embarrassing. A simple monolith would have been less offensive. Designs
should have been solicited.
2. Canada does remember & honour its war dead every Nov. 11th.
every village, town & city has a crowd at its war memorial.
For Ed Kennedy of Parks Canada:
1. Are there examples of how projects like this encourage sustainable
economic development or revenues from tourism?
2. Does parks canada build memorials in other parks site that have a
strong nature preservation mandate?
Question For Eddie:
Do you really believe the DIA can be properly prepared by the end of
November? I fear a rushing approach both by the Foundation and Parks
Canada.
Why was there no design competition?
How would the memorial get running water?
Would the site be maintained open during the winter? Parks Canada is
reducing winter programs due to budget cuts. A National monument this
caliber should be accessible 12 months a year.

Very classy. Cant say enough positive things about the Mother Canada
Project. Lovely place to visit the fallen Canadian Soldiers.

As a resident of Ingonish, I think this would be the perfect monument for

our area. Not only the honor of remembering the war heroes who lost their
lives but for the economy this will bring to our area
I am the daughter of a World War II Vet
Also the mother of a current vet having served 2 tours of Afghan
I am honored that my corner of Canada has been chosen for this National
Memorial. Im so proud to be a Canadian & proud of our men who died
at Vimy Ridge, World War I & 2 etc.
The first time I saw the concept, I was awe struck. The Vision, Concept,
Meaning and symbolism are perfect, to honor the people who gave their
lives for our freedom and to welcome them back home at a time when
the world is in such turmoil. Proves that Canadian live up to their
reputation of a Peacekeeper & just nature. Thank you for this, it renews my
faith in human nature.
Wonderful concept bringing the memory of our fallen in a meaningful,
tranquil way least we forget.
The current site at Green Cove is a very appropriate location for this
memorial.
There are much more suitable sides on this island!!
A bloody crime to put a memorial in our national Park.

Why would they choose this site to honour war veterans, when it will only
be seen by people 2-4 mos. of the year as park visitation is very low for the
other 8 months? - Shouldnt this be in a much more visible place and be
part of our Remembrance Day celebration where people can actually
access the memorial?
Wouldnt it be ethically, environmentally and in a Parks regulatory sense,
be easier and better to put the memorial on private land?

3. What other sites were considered and rejected
Parks Canada has been subject to large budget cuts. The $60M cash
tsunami will swamp the Parks operational budget and purpose to turn the
park into a caretaker of the NFNM. When will all Canadians be consulted
for their approval of this re direction of the Parks?
The donors receive tax credits = to 50% of large donations. That is

uncollected federal & provincial revenue, approx. $30M that could have
provided health, education and yes veterans benefits. So how can you
say there is no public money?
1. Will the endowment fund to be used for on-going maintenance of this
monument - have to be raised in full before commencement of
construction?
How much money will it cost to build Phase #1?
How much money in private donations has NFNM raised to date?
1. Who issues the license of occupation?
2. Must all the financing be in place before any construction begins?
2. Are there revenue generating enterprises directly associated with this

project such as a restaurant or gift shop?
Has there been an archeological assessment of Green Cove?
If yes, can the public see a copy without requesting through access to
information?
Will Dynamite be used and if so, will the D.F.O be part of the impact
assessment?
2. Will the soil samples from Europe be sterilized before being brought to
Canada?
How broad will the Public Consultation be? Were talking about a national
project that may desecrate one of our National Park and encourage
further development in area (National Parks) that have been set aside in
perpetuity as natural resources for all of us.
Will the DIA be distributed throughout Canada? If so, how?



How will I make my considered opinions known to Parks Canada and the Community Meeting October 7, 2014
Foundation?
Why havent there been other consultations with the people of Canada
but only with people of North Smokey?
I think the saying "If only we could have brought you home" is sentimental NFNM Website
and not totally honest. Who is "we"? The government of Canada could
have brought them home, either before or after they died, if it really had
the will to do so.
I am also concerned about the business spinoffs for corporate donors-who controls how the logo of the national memorial might be used for
business purposes?
To be succinct your choice of location for the memorial totally misses the NFNM Website
point of honouring people from Cape Breton.
If you truly wanted to do that you would put it in a place that benefits
people of Cape Breton. A community. Where people live.
Putting it in a national park where nobody lives is equivalent to a slap in
the face to Cape Bretoners.
Taking the tourist traffic away from struggling communities and putting it in
an already busy park away from local businesses is ignorant at best and
deliberately hurtful at worst Shame to your organization your children and
your legacy if this goes ahead as planned.

It would be a desecration to a truly unique natural setting that I've
enjoyed showing my son and hoped one day, he might return with his
children to experience.
I am a twelve year old writing from within Nova Scotia. This monument is

set to go on a beautiful national park. To me, this statue will completely
destroy this locations great beauty. If you want a monument to honor the
veterans and all of the fallen soldiers, why could it not be placed in an
area that has already been developed. I think that this monument would
be more beneficial to be placed in cape smokey at the top of the ski hill..
This would bring business to the small ski hill, while encouraging people to
be active at the same time. Green cove is within a national park, I have
been taught that national parks are places that have been set aside not
to be developed, to be left untouched. I am in favor of honoring the
veterans and fallen soldiers, but please, do not ruin this coves natural
beauty by replacing it with concrete.
What is the logic of placing this Memorial within a National Park in such a NFNM Website
remote, obscure and extremely seasonal location? In my mind by placing
this Memorial into such limited access we are relegating the War Dead
rather than rightfully honoring them. All prominent Memorials I am aware
of are situated
within or very near major Urban areas. What type of infrastructure will be
put in place to facilitate the proposed structures and the effluent created
as a consequence of visitors and any increased traffic? You must note
that many sections of the Cabot Trail are currently in a state of disgraceful
disrepair with no planned upgrades in the foreseeable future. Has an
evaluation been done to assess the environmental impact pertinent with
this endeavor? What are the legal implications applicable in establishing
this Memorial within a National Park? These are just a few questions that
come to mind.

Why do you want to cover the most beautiful rocks in Cape Breton with
cement?
I was there a few weeks ago and it made me so sad that they might
disappear I almost cried. I don't think my Grand Father fought in the 1St
World War so you could destroy a piece of Canada. Put it in Halifax so
more people will be able to visit it.

Are you all nuts? This is a solution in search of a problem, the location is
bizarre and offensive, the process is backwards, and the concept of
"marketing opportunities" for "partners" is beneath contempt.

Wanted to inform us as an FYI - his uncle got murdered on Green Cove phone
he was a taxi driver
Suggests the monument should be built at Sydney Harbour instead - This
was the point Canadian soldiers left, there are more tourist there, and the
monument will be exposed to more young people (feels that the younger
generation does not know much about Canadian history and the role it
played in the war)
She spoke in favour of the memorial, but is concerned with part of the
Town Hall Meeting March 2014
proposal to have a restaurant and gift shops on site. She expressed this
would be competing with local business owners. She said the area could
definitely use the memorial, but it does not need another seasonal
restaurant and gift shop. It may put some small business owners out of
business.
Lisa MacLeod spoke in support of the project. She presented the MP with Town Hall Meeting March 2014
1229 signatures from community members who support the project.

Supporter and offered thanks to Parks Canada for offering land for this
project.

Green Cove. He received big applause.
Described how honoured she is to coordinate Remembrance Day
ceremonies each year with her students. As a teacher, her concern is that
soon there wont be any vets left and there needs to be something that
lives on and tells this story. She noted that she is only a summer resident in
Ingonish, but addressed the community saying that whatever they decide
as a community, she hopes they at least have a voice. She continued to
say that at the very least, the community should be honoured that people
think this place is special enough to honour the countrys veterans with
such a national memorial.

have been used for development. Noted Gros Morne swimming pool
complex. He spoke about how Parks Canada realized that its past
approaches to expropriations were heavy handed. He said there is a
precedent already set for using park lands for developments. He also
spoke about economic benefits. He said that as a business person he
thinks this will enhance tourism on the Cabot Trail. He spoke to a friend of
his in Peggys Cove who said the Swiss Air memorial there has attracted
many more visitors. He said the community needs economic growth and
the memorial is it.

She spoke about her grandfather fighting overseas and fighting for the
right to enjoy this natural beauty. People come to Cape Breton to
experience this natural beauty. She said she is a trained archaeologist
and works for the provincial government. She said according to
geography, Baie Verte, not Green Cove is in line with Vimy Memorial. She
also referenced a 1982 Parks Canada study that identified Paleo-Indian
cultural resources. She also spoke about a 1985 interview with Walter
LeFriend (sp) who lived and worked at Green Cove when it was a
seasonal fishing village. She also spoke about people dying off Green
Cove in recent years (tourists swept by rogue wave). She was upset and
appalled at the lack of transparency.
Strongly opposed to the memorial in the park. Suggested Halifax or on top Town Hall Meeting March 2014
of Smokey. He made a comment on the Foundations absence at the
meeting and spoke to the enormous tax write-off the Foundation founder
and donors are receiving and that the Foundation is just looking for
government money. He says tourists will show up anyway regardless of a
monument. Dont use the backs of veterans as an excuse. He said this is
a money maker project for Parks Canada. He said he tried to get a job at
the park and could push a lawn mower as well as the next guy but was
overlooked. He said Parks Canada should be more concerned with
cleaning up litter and deadfall trees than building a monument.

unfair for people to assume that those who do not support the memorial in
the park are not supporting veterans. She asked everyone to keep those

have an approval in principle without anyone knowing about it. She said
people are questioning the location. She referenced an order in council
that was signed. How did this come about without anyone knowing?
Glace Bay resident she read her letter to the editor that appeared in the Town Hall Meeting March 2014
Post. She stressed that every square mile of the park must be protected.
She said she came to Cape Breton over 30 years ago because of the
nature. She said the memorial needs another location. She referenced
the park Act and said the Minister cannot impose.
She continued that she spoke to geologists who are concerned about the Town Hall Meeting March 2014
proposal. She asked if geologists will be consulted during the
environmental assessment. She recounted that the memorial at Vimy
started crumbling just a few decades after it was built and required huge
maintenance to save it. She noted that Vimy isnt right on the ocean, but
experienced such impacts from the elements, whereas Green Cove is
right on the ocean and will receive much more impacts from the
elements.
She expressed that the community wants the memorial that there is no
debate about that. The only debate is where. Is it appropriate for it to be
in the park? She questioned the need for year-round access to the
memorial, when the park is reducing seasons.
referenced Foundation information, quoting that only $11k in donations
have been received and the Foundation has spent $73,000 so far.

Asked who is paying for this? He said that all donations get a 38% tax
exemption. He calculated $22 million in exemptions, money the federal
government will not be receiving because of this. He noted that all
Canadians are stakeholders and he hopes consultations go beyond the
local community. He stressed that this project must comply with the Parks
Act, but cannot see how that will happen. He questioned if the full
amount will be raised in time for the planned launch date? He referenced
that $60 million is a big injection of cash in the area, but it will completely
re-purpose the park, making it a place to contemplate war. He suggests
top of Smokey as a better spot.
She asked what the impact will be on the fishery.
Voiced that he wants to be consulted on the work relating to the fishery to Town Hall Meeting March 2014
make sure there are no impacts, but he felt those concerns could be
worked out. Asked if DFO would be involved. He also noted that as a
business owner, he feels the area needs more tourists. He said there have
been so many other projects leave the area because the community
cant agree and he is afraid the community will lose this project as well.
As the owner of a gift show, he did say he would prefer if the proposed
concept did not have gift shops as they would compete, but supports the
memorial project.
