MASTER OF SCIENCE IN

Engineering of
Computing Systems
Milano Leonardo
Campus

Presentation

The Master of Science (Laurea Magistrale) in Engineering of Computing Systems provides the student
with a comprehensive background on the state-of-the art. The courses are taught by the faculty of the
Department of Electronics and Information, an internationally renowned group of researchers involved in a
variety of projects in collaboration with national and international companies and institutions. Students can
interact with the faculty and be part of research projects and exposed to the most advanced research results.
The Department also hosts a three year PhD programme in Information Technology, which is a natural
follow-up to the MSc for those students interested in continuing their studies and performing research.
Lastly, Milano has always enjoyed the highest concentration of information technology companies in Italy,
thus providing not only immediate employment opportunities for graduates, but also the basis for close
collaboration between industry and academia.

Objectives

This post-graduate programme aims at forming engineers endowed with a rich cultural basis and able to
develop and exploit the methods and tools of computer science with engineering attitude, to tackle a wide
spectrum of applications. This engineer is in the first place a designer of applications
and systems. The programme develops the ability to design and implement hardware and software systems,
which find application in industry and services, either private or public. The curriculum will allow the
students to:
- broaden their mathematical and scientific knowledge and acquire the ability to apply such knowledge to
model complex systems which require an interdisciplinary approach;
- acquire a deep understanding of engineering, both in general and in the specialized area of Computer
Engineering, and the ability to identify, formulate and solve complex engineering problems in an
innovative way;
- design, implement and manage complex and innovative systems, processes and services;
- plan and carry out complex experiments;
- acquire the ability to understand the contexts of problems and applications;
- acquire adequate elements of enterprise culture and professional ethics.

Subjects

The programme comprises both methodological and advanced technical courses, suitable to bring the
student close to the frontier of technology. Courses are often complemented by laboratory activities.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing
- High Performance Computer Architectures and Embedded System Design
- Advanced Databases and Information Systems
- Distributed Systems and Middleware Technologies
- Pervasive Computing
- Advanced Software Engineering, Design of Safety-critical, Concurrent and Real-time Systems
- Robotics and Image Analysis
- Web, and Multimedia Technologies, Videogames Design.
The programme also offers advanced courses in Automation and other disciplines in information
engineering, and in other fields of engineering to which computer science can be beneficial

Career
Opportunities

The main professional areas targeted by our graduates are innovation and development of production,
advanced design, and management of complex systems, either as independent professionals or as members
of manufacturing or service enterprises, or in the public administration.
Graduates will find their jobs in the areas of hardware or software production, automation and robotics,
information systems and computer networks, services and public administration.
The education provided enables graduates to manage complex projects thanks to a deep knowledge of
engineering methodologies and technologies, and to the acquisition of skills in planning, managing, and
evaluating the economic aspects of projects.

Eligible students

All students holding at least a BSc, or equivalent degree and 15 years of total education are eligible for
application. Preference is accorded to outstanding graduates in Information Technology, Computer Science,
and Computer Engineering. A selection will be made on the basis of personal curricula and performance.

Tuition fees

- For EU students regular fees are based on students family income and the study plan presented, and range
from about 800 to 3,300 per year.
- For Non-EU students regular fees are equal to about 3,300 per year.
