What is engineering?
ABET DEFINITION
UNESCO DEFINITION
Engineering is the field or discipline, practice, profession and art that relates to the
development, acquisition and application of technical, scientific and mathematical
knowledge about the understanding, design, development, invention, innovation and use
of materials, machines, structures, systems and processes for specific purpose.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Professional art of applying science to the optimum conversion of the resources of nature
to the uses of humankind. Engineering is based principally on physics, chemistry, and
mathematics and their extensions into materials science, solid and fluid mechanics,
thermodynamics, transfer and rate processes, and systems analysis. A great body of
special knowledge is associated with engineering; preparation for professional practice
involves extensive training in the application of that knowledge. Engineers employ two
types of natural resources, materials and energy. Materials acquire uses that reflect their
properties: their strength, ease of fabrication, lightness, or durability; their ability to
insulate or conduct; and their chemical, electrical, or acoustical properties. Important
sources of energy include fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, and gas), wind, sunlight, falling
water, and nuclear fission.

Machines are designed to fulfill some function (design), this include sketch, drafting,
CAD (Computer Aided Design).
Machines require power (Thermodynamics, combustion, Electrotechnic).
Machines pollute (air pollution control).
Machines make heat that has to be removed (heat transfer).
Machines move, so their motion must be understood (kinematics, dynamics,
Vibration) and controlled (controls, signals and systems).
Machines must be constructed (manufacturing), this includes CAM (computer Aided
Manufacturing).
Machines have to be made from something (materials).
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, costs, and other techniques for
maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods, motivating, developing,
and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job Administration
and Management, Knowledge of business and management principles involved in
strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique,
production methods, and coordination of people and resources, is essential for
mechanical engineers.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing
customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting
quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
SAFETY MANAGEMENT
Public Safety and Security - Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and
strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the
protection of people, data, property, and institutions.

General skills:
GENERAL CULTURE
Mechanical engineers should acquire a very broad technical and scientific knowledge,
knowledge of the maximum possible machines (how they work, how they are madeetc.)
Also they must possess knowledge about the job market, politics and the economic
situation of the country which they intend to work in.
TEAMWORK
A great engineer understands that they are part of a larger team working together to
make one project come together successfully, and therefore, must work well as part of that
team.
CRITICAL THINKING
Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative
solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Conclusion:
Mechanical Engineering can be fun and Exciting. We design vehicles that move fast and fly
high, and machines that allow mankind to do things they couldnt otherwise do.
