Chiefs give Pirates dose of own rally

ARELLANO University gave Lyceum a bitter dose of its own medicine last night, scoring a
thrilling 76-75 come-from-behind win in the 89th NCAA Seniors basketball tournament at The
Arena in San Juan.
John Pinto sank a difficult jumper from the top of the key with 1.7 ticks left as the Chiefs stole
the win from the Pirates and further muddled the picture for the fourth and last semifinal slot.
After playing a pivotal role in Lyceums 70-68 upset of Letran a week ago, Cameroonian big
man Aziz Mbomiko emerged as goat this time as he committed an inbound violation with 14.7
second left, paving the way for Pintos game-winner.
I guess it was our will to win that pulled us through. We just didnt like to lose like the last
time, said relieved Arellano coach Koy Banal, referring to the teams demoralizing 49-54
setback to San Sebastian College last Monday.
Laban na to, added Banal, whose charges caught up with the Pirates in the standings, now
both toting 4-8 cards, just a game behind College of St. Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College and
Jose Rizal University, all with 5-6 marks.
In another low-scoring ballgame where neither squad refused to yield, and the count knotted at
55-all entering the final quarter, Lyceum gained the slight upperhand as it took a 72-65 lead on
Wilson Baltazars basket, time down to 2:50.
Unlike the last time, however, the Chiefs refused to lie down and die, with Levi Hernandez
sparking a 5-0 rally by sinking a triple to make it 70-72 with just over a minute left.
Shane Ko sank a triple to make it 75-70 with 1:17 to go but it proved to be the Pirates last basket
as the Chiefs countered with a closing 6-0 run climaxed by Pintos off-balanced jumper, the ball
bouncing once on the back of the rim before finally dropping in.
While Pinto emerged as the end-game hero for Arellano, it was Vince Caperal who kept the game
close as he topcored with 25 points on top of 16 rebounds.
Mbomiko saw his topscoring 17 points go for naught while Dexter Zamora added 15 for
Lyceum.

Red Lions triumph, gain tie for lead

SAN Beda College leaned on Nigerian big man Ola Adeogun in the clutch to hold off latecharging Jose Rizal University 68-54 yesterday and gain a share of the lead in the 89th NCAA
Seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Adeogun topscored with 20 points, four of them coming from the charity stripe with less than
two minutes left, as the Red Lions defused the Heavy Bombers comeback and joined the idle
Letran Knights on top at 9-2.
The Heavy Bombers absorbed their second straight loss and slipped into a three-way tie for fifth
with College of St. Benilde and Emilio Aguinaldo College at 5-6.
Despite the victory, rookie SBC coach Boyet Fernandez was far from satisfied, saying it was
not as dominant as you saw it.
In a clash between the leagues most defensive-minded squads, Fernandez noted the Red Lions
committed 21 turnovers the Heavy Bombers turned into 16 points, majority of them in their late
fourth-quarter rally.
The Red Lions buckled down to work early, streaking to a 14-4 lead at the start of the first
quarter before the Heavy Bombers rallied to make it 11-18 going into the second period.
Working behind the teams suffocating defense, Adeogun, Baser Amer and Rome dela Rosa
conspired in a withering 17-5 run to stretch San Bedas lead to its biggest at 35-16 before the
defending champions settled down to a 35-21 halftime spread.
They Lions still had a comfortable 56-40 lead halfway through the final quarter when the Heavy
Bombers went on an 11-4 tear capped by Marco Balagtas three-point play to threaten at 51-60
with barely a minute remaining.
Adeogun came to the rescue of the embattled Red Lions, sinking his free throws off a Michael
Mabulac foul, time down to 30 seconds, to give them a 64-51 cushion before Amer sealed the
game a few seconds later with a lay-up.
The Nigerian center, who also had 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double, got able
support from Amer and Dela Rosa who chipped in 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Balagtas paced JRU with 16 points while Philip Panamiogan added 14.
