Eddycurrentinspectionisoftenusedtodetectcorrosion,
erosion,crackingandotherchangesintubing.Heatexchangers
andsteamgenerators,whichareusedinpowerplants,have
thousandsoftubesthatmustbepreventedfromleaking.Thisis
especiallyimportantinnuclearpowerplantswherereused,
contaminatedwatermustbepreventedfrommixingwithfresh
waterthatwillbereturnedtotheenvironment.The
contaminatedwaterflowsononesideofthetube(insideor
outside)andthefreshwaterflowsontheotherside.Theheatis
transferredfromthecontaminatedwatertothefreshwaterand
thefreshwateristhenreturnedbacktoissource,whichis
usuallyalakeorriver.Itisveryimportanttokeepthetwo
watersourcesfrommixing,sopowerplantsareperiodically
shutdownsothetubesandotherequipmentcanbeinspected
andrepaired.Theeddycurrenttestmethodandtherelatedremotefieldtestingmethod
providehighspeedinspectiontechniquesfortheseapplications.
