grasp the rack handle, squeeze it and pull forward until

The only point of contact between the carrier and the

bike is the rubber tire. Make sure your bike is secured
properly: the locking arm should be at the 10 oclock
or 2 oclock position on the front tire depending on
which way the bicycle is facing.

Bicycle carriers are available on the front of MetroBus on

routes in the City of St. Louis. Bicycles can be placed on
the bicycle carrier during the normal hours of operation
and can accommodate two bicycles at a time. You must
be at least 13 years old to use a bicycle carrier, unless you
are accompanied by an adult.

Stand with your bike in the front or rear open areas

only. Do not use the kickstand or leave your bike for any

Avoid the Door Zone. The Door Zone is the three

to four feet along the left side of a parked car where a
door can hit a person riding a bicycle.
When riding in a bike lane, ride on the left side of the
laneat least three feet from parked cars. Look inside
each parked car before you pass it. Move outside the
Door Zone, or slow down and pass carefully. Watch
behind you. Keep track of traffic behind you, so youll
know whether you have enough room if you must
swerve suddenly out of the Door Zone. A mirror
helps you see traffic behind you as you pedal forward.

Use lights or reflective gear at night or any other

time when visibility is poor. A white headlight and rear
red reflector are recommended on bicycles and a
flashlight for walkers. Flashing lights are especially
effective to draw attention.

To cross an intersection, use the lane farthest to

the right that points to where you are going.
Follow markings to cross an intersection.
Use hand signals so that people driving know where
you are going. Signal all your turns and stops ahead of
time. Also, before turning, look over your shoulder for
any traffic. Check and only move when it is safe.

Be careful when riding on the sidewalks. Missouri

law allows people riding bikes on sidewalks except in
established business districts. People must ride their
bikes at a safe speed, yield the right-of-way and give
an audible signal, such as on your left, before
passing people walking.

Conditions on the roads, trails and sidewalks vary

depending on the time of day, the day of the week and
the weather. Be prepared to make your own evaluation
of conditions, and plan routes appropriate to your skills
or ability.
