GALLERIA LA LAGUNA: A Proposed Histocultural

Exposition of the Bay
RATIONALE:
The history of the Philippines is believed to have begun
with the arrival of the first humans using rafts or primitive
boats (Balangay boats) at least 67,000 years ago as the
2007 discovery of Callao Man suggested. However, that was
before the Laguna Copperplate Inscription (LCI), the first
written document found in a Philippine language was found
in s ou t he a s te rn sh o re of L ag un a d e B a y. Th e in s c rip t ion
itself identifies the date of its creation as the year 900.
Prior to its discovery in 1989, the earliest record of the
Philippine
Islands
corresponded
with
the
arrival
of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. The discovery of the LCI
thus extended the record of Philippine history back by 600
years.
This period saw the immense change that took hold of
the
archipelago
from Stone
Age cultures
in
the
fourth
century, continuing on with the gradual widening of trade
until 900 and the first surviving written records.

interested in evaluating unusual artifacts they had no
knowledge of. Instead, it was the persistent effort of a
Dutch national who further studied and translate the 900 AD
Laguna Copperplate Inscription. This newly found document
pushes the "starting point" of Philippine history all the way
back to 900 A.D., 621 years earlier than the previously
accepted date of 1521 when Antonio Pigafetta wrote his
observations during his voyage with Magellan.

Despite of abundance of natural resources and rich
culture and craftsmanship in Laguna, there is still vast
inequality on economic growth of its four districts. The
cities that cover the 1st and 2nd districts have incomes
which are very extremely far from what the incomes are from
the local governments in the 3rd and 4th districts. This
scenario also results into numbers of unemployment in the
province. With this condition, cultural promotion of these
lower-income districts shall also be considered in proposing
a historical museum.

The research will be conducted through extensive

RATIONALE:
In Philippines, it is through festivities or fiesta where
culture abounds free. This is the perfect season for the
Filipinos to show how a town has evolved with its history over
time and what made them unique to the other towns locally.
This is also the season where all the luxurious goods
Filipinos have are showcased to everyone. Truly, Fiesta is a
phenomenal exhibition of a towns trade and culture, which
distinguishes the Philippines among other Asian countries.

There are also existing crafts in the city which are not

found in Binan, Laguna. The production of handmade fine

bone china requires a long and complex process by a skilled
team of artisans following only the highest standards of
quality. This contributes to its high demand and luxury status
in the market.
Moreover, historical structures which should be proud of
have long been forgotten and in danger of ruins if not to be
sold for commercial purposes. Therefore, there is a clear
need to promote not just the development of heritage tourism
but also the inherited entrepreneurial skills of the people
through handcrafting, thus, serve as a pride for the city
itself.
RESEARCH STRATEGY:
The research will be conducted through extensive research
and library works including the help of World Wide Web to
gather all necessary information needed for the scope of the
project.
Comparative studies or Descriptive method should also be

Historical research method is an aspect on determining
the needs of the site during the research. The research can
determine the past problem and event that happened on the
site. Through this research information, the researcher can
manipulate and control the research to find out the solution
to the problem. Understanding the past and present events
would anticipate the limit of the future extents.
TYPE OF DATA TO BE COLLECTED:
